Olbermann Warns Voters Against 'Cataclysm' of Tea Party, 'Would Destroy America from Within'

By Brad Wilmouth | October 28, 2010 | 02:56

A  A

On Wednesday’s Countdown show, during a 21-minute "Special Comment," MSNBC host Keith Olbermann warned American voters against electing Tea Party Republicans to power, whom he suggested are "unqualified, unstable individuals" who will take America "backward to Jim Crow, or backward to the breadlines of the ‘30s, or backward to hanging union organizers." He then made a play off MSNBC’s "Lean Forward" slogan to disparage the Tea Party movement as he declared: "Vote backward, vote Tea Party."

After reading a list of controversial quotes and policy positions he disagreed with that have been spoken by a list of Tea Party-backed Republican candidates, whom he referred to as "cranks, menaces, mercenaries and authoritarians," he went on to suggest that the Tea Party movement is a greater threat than America’s foreign enemies, and preemptively blamed those who would vote for these candidates as having "enabled" a "cataclysm": "If you sit there next Tuesday, if you sit there tomorrow, and the rest of this week, and you let this cataclysm unfold, you have enabled this. It is one thing to be attacked by those who would destroy America from without. It is a worse thing to be attacked by those who would destroy America from within."

Below is a transcript of relevant portions of the Wednesday, October 27, Countdown show on MSNBC:

Now, as promised, a "Special Comment" on the madness of the Tea Party and the elections of next Tuesday. It is as if a group of moderately talented performers has walked on stage at a comedy club on Improv night. Each hears a shout from the audience, consisting of a bizarre but just barely plausible fear or hatred or neurosis or prejudice.

And the entertainment of the evening is for each to take their thin, absurd premise, and build upon it a campaign for governor or congressman or senator. The problem is, of course, when it turns out that there is no audience shouting out gags, just a cabal of corporations and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and political insider bloodsuckers like Karl Rove and Dick Armey and the Chicken Little chorus of Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck.

And the instructions are not to improvise a comedy sketch, but to elect a group of unqualified, unstable individuals who will do what they are told, in exchange for money and power, and march this nation as far backward as they can get, backward to Jim Crow, or backward to the breadlines of the '30s, or backward to hanging union organizers, or backward to the trusts and the robber barons.

Result: the Tea Party. Vote backward, vote Tea Party. And if you are somehow indifferent to what is planned for next Tuesday, it is nothing short of an attempted use of democracy to end this democracy, to buy America wholesale and pave over the freedoms and the care we take of one another, which have combined to keep us the envy of the world. You do not think your freedom is at stake next Tuesday?

...

You are willing to let these people run this country? This is the America you want? This is the America you are willing to permit? These are the kinds of cranks, menaces, mercenaries and authoritarians you will turn this country over to?

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

If you sit there next Tuesday and let this happen, whose fault will that be? Not really theirs. They are taught that freedom is to be seized and rationed. They can sleep at night having advanced themselves and their puppeteers and to hell with everybody else.

They see the greatness of America not in its people but its corporations. They see the success of America not in hard work but in business swindles. They see the worthiness of America not in its quality of life but in its quality of investing. They see the future of America not in progress, but in revolution to establish a kind of theocracy for white males, with dissent caged and individuality suppressed.

They see America not for what is, nor what it can be. They see delusions, specters, fantasies. They see communists under every bed and a gun in every hand. They see tax breaks for the rich and delayed retirement for everyone else. They fight the redistribution of wealth not because they oppose redistribution, but because their sole purpose is to protect wealth and keep it where they think it belongs, in the bank accounts of the wealthy. They want to make the world safe for Bernie Madoff.

But you know better. If you sit there next Tuesday, if you sit there tomorrow, and the rest of this week, and you let this cataclysm unfold, you have enabled this. It is one thing to be attacked by those who would destroy America from without. It is a worse thing to be attacked by those who would destroy America from within.

But it is the worst thing to sit back and let it happen, to not find the time and the means to convince just one other sane voter to put aside the disappointment of the last two years and look to the future and vote. Because the disappointment of the last two years, those will be the "good old days" in a Tea Party America.

This is the week in which the three-card monte dealers hope to take over the government, the candidates who want their own way, who will say anything to make palatable their real identities as agents of regression, repression, and corporate sovereignty. They are here, they have energized the self-serving and the greedy and the proudly ill-informed.

...

The words are those of Nedrick Young and Harold Jacob Smith from the screenplay from the movie Inherit the Wind. As the attorney for the man on trial for teaching evolution, Spencer Tracy cuts to the gist: "Fanaticism and ignorance is forever busy, and needs feeding. And soon, your honor, with banners flying and with drums beating we'll be marching backward, backward through the glorious ages of that 16th century when bigots burned the man who dared bring them enlightenment and intelligence to the human mind!"

The angered judge replies, "I hope counsel does not mean to imply that this court is bigoted." The attorney mutters, "Well, your honor has the right to hope." The judge warns, "I have the right to do more than that." The attorney explodes: "You have the power to do more than that."

And you have the power to do more than that. Good night and good luck.

Submitted by MaximusBraveheart on Thu, 10/28/2010 - 1:06pm.

We are in those times!  So the very thing America needs at this despirate hour, is BAD.  What?  Our Country is already dying from within from lack of good teaching!  We as a Country, 40% or more, have become immoral and selfish!  Willing to cheat and steal.  Lazy & self absorbed.  Yeah right our Country needs more big government to run everything while putting us all on an enslaved government welfare plantation!  Some good safe poverty where we get our checks, food, and healtcare free!  Where we can run a little gambling, drugs, prostitution on the side & still get our checks.  Hey those Escalades arn't cheap!  Sounds SO wonderful!  Barry probably thinks those are good small businesses he is fostering!  God help us, please!  M-B

People like Keef are 'destroying American from within', but fortunatly for the rest of us, they don't have enough audience to cause major damage. Unfortunatly, there are so many MSM doing the same thing, that they DO inflict a certain amount of collateral damage on the unsuspecting or uneducated people............

I'm just hopin' and prayin' that next Teusday is a huge tidal wave  - bigger than the one that just swept through my favorite surf spots near Sumatra - and these clowns, who are allready apoplectic about what MIGHT happen, totally go off the deep end!!! Then things will get VERY entertaining!!!

"If a tree falls in the forest..."

Submitted by adamsmith on Thu, 10/28/2010 - 11:17am.

As I was watching this comedian last night I was thinking along the lines of the old adage, "If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?"

My twist on that as I was watching Herr Olbergoebbels describing the death of America that is already being put into action by Obamalinsky was this....

"If a Progressive Communist POS puts out propaganda to maybe 300,000 Moonbats(I know he has around a million viewers, but figure 700,000 of those are rubberneckers like me who laugh at this idiot) does anyone else hear him?"

The answer is no. Herr Olbergoebbels is preaching to a very small choir....

Please keep spouting your miserable leftist nonsense.  It's really good for our conservative cause to let everyone here just how twisted and full of hate you and the rest of the liberal/progressives in this country are.  You are what is bad for us, and your kind is what is destroying this country.  Pay attention to people and you'll see that most of the time, the thing they preach hardest about is the thing that they really are inside. That makes you (and the rest of the hate spewing left) very sad, pathetic people.

Let Nov. 2, 2010 and Nov. 6, 2012 be  the days that we Americans rescue this last, best hope of a country from the personal mysticism and tyranny of a would be dictator. Let us reclaim our former great place, and build on it even brighter, even greater than before.

Olberman was right: The Tea Party is a step backward

Submitted by boboberg on Thu, 10/28/2010 - 5:48am.

Keith got it 100% correct. Look at the security staff of Rand Paul that head-stomped a woman who had the audacity to hold an anti-Rand Paul sign at a Rand Paul event. Then there's Sarah Palin: Sarah Palin is a blathering idiot. She knows nothing about the constitution nor how the government works and I jump for joy at the thought of her being the Republican name on the 2012 Presidential ticket because Democrats will clean the floor with her. She's just another yahoo from the tea party along with Sharron "I've got juice with him" Angle and Christine "Scientists have created lab mice with fully functioning human brains" O'Donnell and Rand "I reject the 1964 Civil Rights Bill" Paul. The tea party wants to kill:

Social Security

Medicare

Food Stamps

Welfare

Unemployment insurance

Public schools

Department of Education

VA Hospitals

The 14th Amendment

The 1964 Civil Rights Act

The reason they want to kill all of these is simple: the tea partiers are elderly, white, racist bigots who have already lived their lives and don't want to contribute towards the needs of others nor put up with minorities.   Mark Montgomery  NYC, NY

I guess I missed the memo where the Tea Party said that they wanted to do away with most of this.  Where did you read it?  DailyKos?

As far as the woman with the foot on her SHOULDER, she has been at every Rand Paul rally trying to give him a gift.  Should we try that with President Obama?  Would less happen to me if I tried to give it to him?

I looked for your post when the guy at the HC rally had part of his finger bitten off by one of the activists there.  I must have been trying to read the Washington Post that day.

In other words, you don't know what you are talking about, you are still free to run your mouth because the Tea Party and the conservatives believe in free speech, even stupid free speech, and because your liberals have not gotten enough of a foothold to suppress free speech.http://www.breitbart.tv/prosecutors-sheriffs-join-missouri-truth-squads-to-protect-obama-campaign-from-misleading-ads/

Submitted by NeoKong on Thu, 10/28/2010 - 6:10am.

As long as you are insulting the right people then anything goes in the state run media.

Juan Williams says sometimes muslims on a plane scare him and he was fired immediately.    Joy Behag calls Sharon Angle a bitch who belongs in hell and Olbermann goes on a paranoid spittle flecked rant and that is just good commentary.    Chris Matthews compares Rand Paul supporters to Nazis (again) and it's like hey...no big deal.  Ed Schultz and Rachel Maddow routinely compare Tea Partiers to bigots and homophpobes or terrorists and that is just fine.   It is normal in fact at MSNBC.    Smearing people and propaganda stunts are all they know there.    That network is a friggin' joke.   What is even more ridiculous is how they try to portray themselves as these thoughtful, compassionate and insightful progressives when they are actually  nasty and hateful left-wing agitators and liars.    Not a day goes by where they do not tell us which group of people they despise as they sneer at and insult them as they exempt themselves from the behavior they claim to deplore.

It's disgraceful.

Ramming the obamacare through knowing that a majority of the country opposed it was the Left-wingers indulging in a power fantasy.  That was exactely how they think they should run the government.  They know they represent a minority but they look with contempt on the majority.  The majority should just sit in the back of the bus and shut up!

It's been reported elsewhere that she was trying to shove the sign into the car.  I don't know when the Kelly interview was, but that video was not new, as far as I know.

And that Spilbor woman who's suggesting that the guy could possibly claim that he was "protecting a third party" should be ashamed of herself.

I love how these Libtards

Submitted by mattm on Thu, 10/28/2010 - 9:28am.

I love how these Libtards invoke Jim Crow (a Democrat), the 1930s bread lines (induced by FDR 'stimulus' spending programs and a 79% upper tax bracket), and make up stuff about hanging union leaders...I think it was the Soviets who did that...  Everything this moron rants about is something the Left is guilty of.

How the hell does this imbecile get over a million viewers?  It's really sad.

I'll admit it. On 11/2 I will be sitting comfortably on my couch with several beverages, and I will mostly be watching PMSNBC. The breakdowns will be EPIC!

Even the most outrageous SNL

Submitted by ML Stovall on Thu, 10/28/2010 - 1:56pm.

Even the most outrageous SNL parody of Kweef couldn't do this asshat any justice. What an idiot. There's just no way he's not cracking up at his own BS when he's 'rehearsing', proofreading or whatever he does prior to the show.

Olbermann is delusional

Submitted by Phryj1 on Thu, 10/28/2010 - 2:02pm.

How else can someone make claims like this? Either he's suffering from paranoid schizophrenia, or he's a pathological liar.

MSNBC lets this guy spout this crap, but claims they don't support the left? Either they're lying or they're just as delusional as he is.

Progressives seem to be completely averse to facts and logic. Apparently, reality has a conservative bias.

KOthe Jo

Submitted by east tennessee john on Thu, 10/28/2010 - 2:56pm.

My my KO the JO appears to need both a rabies and distemper shot. He's still the best at taking things out of context, although he needs a history lesson. Wasn't Jim Crow a function of the post -Reconstuction South, KO? And wasn't it Democratcs that ran that show, KO?So why do you think you can lay that at the feet of the Tea Party because Rand Paul disagrees with 1, section of the 1964 Civil Rights Act that pertains to private property  and its use? Are you that stupid? It appears you are.

Tea Party will kill the country?

Submitted by TheHistorian on Thu, 10/28/2010 - 5:29pm.

The only thing the Tea Party will do is save the country from you and Barack Hussein Obama, hmmm, hmmm, hmmm.  The promise for bipartisanship, the claim for open government, the claim for tax cuts for the middle class, these were all promises, and all broken.  The whole Obama Presidency is a lie, and is a move to try to force socialism and maybe even communism on this country.

And the Tea Party is destroying this country?  I agree with the UCSD study; you have a genetic abnormality, lieberal.
