Opinion: Dan Rather, From Buckwheats to Watermelons

  • Bookmark and Share

My boss, Brent Bozell, told me that (in his opinion) Dan Rather is not a racist, but let's not consider his recent faux pas about Barack Obama and his failure to get the health care bill passed as an isolated incident.

It was not.

On Sunday, March 7th, Dan Rather said the following about the president…
"Listen he's a nice person, he's very articulate…"
When Rather got to "articulate", I knew we had trouble brewing.
"… this is what's been used against him, but he couldn't sell watermelons if it, you gave him the state troopers to flag down the traffic."

It's also clear that Chris Matthews knew this would end bloody when he attempted to cut Rather off and stave off any further damage. I initially thought Matthews' failure to post the segment (including what could be considered a racial slur against the President of the United States) an oversight, until I remembered that Chris Matthews forgot Barack Obama was black.

My bad.

With all due respect Mr. Bozell, who assured me Rather was no racist, Dan does have a history of making what some have considered insensitive statements.

In 2001 during the whole Democratic Congressman Gary Condit/missing intern Chandra Levy thing, Dan Rather was kind of upset that his network, CBS, succumbed to public pressure (a sin they wouldn't repeat with John Edwards) and forced him to report a scandal he selectively sat on for two months.

During an interview with Don Imus, Rather said…
"What happened was they (CBS management) got the willies, they got the Buckwheats. Their knees wobbled and we gave it up."
Granted, there are many definitions of the term "buckwheats" ranging from inflicting a slow and painful death to a racial slur named after the Little Rascals character.

Whatever the motivation for both events, Rather may not be a racist, but if not, we must question his competence in the art of the ad lib. As a celebrated, seasoned news professional, one would have to ask Dan after he made those remarks, "What were ya thinkin'?"

I look at it this way: Would Dan Rather have made either of those comments on Black Entertainment Television or addressing an NAACP Convention? I think not.

For Dan Rather to make those comments when he did implies that he felt safe in the company he was in, which may also say something about Chris Matthews and those guests (but that's a subject for another day).

To state the obvious, had any white conservative said the same thing, instead of omitting the segment's posting on his website, Chris Matthews would've been screaming how that conservative's words are representative of the thinking of the GOP and any less than a firing and lifetime societal banishment would be too little, too late.

In typical liberal media fashion, they feel if THEY ignore it, it will all go away. The problem is the New Media doesn't observe their protocol, so THEY did and it won't. However Chris Matthews will continue to use black people for partisan gain and Dan Rather will not lose what little job he has left.

I'm personally tired of this topic because it always ends the same way. If anything, it defines why there will continue to be a racial divide in America. Racism will never be eradicated when one side can, and will always, excuse the indiscretions of their own.

Mr. Parks,

Agreed - "personally tired of this topic".

BTW - Still enjoying Black and Right - Thanks for that!

"When the search for truth is confused with political advocacy, the pursuit of knowledge is reduced to the quest for power."

Buckwheat racist?

Ah...the good old days, when SNL was funny.

I hope he fails, too.

Let's be nice

I think that Obama could sell a lot of watermelons if he had the right location. Rather and Matthews are unlikely to visit such a spot, but that doesn't mean that a clean and articulate man who selectively speaks in dialect cannot be succesful in America today. In fact, I wish Obama the best of luck in his next position.

"Racism will never be

"Racism will never be eradicated when one side can, and will always, excuse the indiscretions of their own." Spot on! They also need to stop the race baiting and accusations of racism just because a white person disagrees with Obama or any other minority! Those who have been offended or hurt by real or imagined racism need to forgive those who have or allegedly treated them with racism.

Even Liberals lose the filters when they get old

Dan's just getting on in years and it's a little harder for him to remember all the PC rules.

You mean like Jimmy Carter?

Were you thinking of Jimmy Carter's implied, senile, anti-Semitic remarks about Israel?

Democrats: If you tell a lie of often enough, it becomes the truth.

Replublicans:  You can fool some of the people all the time, and you can fool all of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time.*

*As is proven by MSNBC, Mainstream Media and the blogasphere, respectively.

Boy oh Boy!

If a conservative had made those remarks, there would be an outcry from Boston to San Francisco to not only fire the person, but to crucify them in the media.  They would be labeled racists and haters and evil and all kinds of other unfriendly adjectives.

The double standard is alive and well!

Selling Watermelons

I am sure that if Mr. Parks checked he would find out that white people sell a lot more watermelons than black people do.

Yeah, but that would just be

Yeah, but that would just be blamed on the white people stealing the watermelons from the oppressed minorities and then selling them at an obscene profit.

Latent Liberal Racists

Simple as that.  What they will use to destroy those they despise CAN NOT be permitted to be used against them.  Liberals never cease the race baiting...but when a liberal truly does slip up and show their true colors, which is their devotion to exploiting races for personal gain ONLY...then all the wagons get circled to protect the hypocrite who just outed himself.  Where Republicans demand accountability....liberals have no intention of ridding another liberal who exposes the agenda...they simply protect protect protect.

Rather is as racist as any Republican they've dragged through the mud to discredit and every bit as racist as any liberal caught within the last year making equally racist remarks against Obama...Reid and Matthews to name two.  Imus was nearly destroyed for using 'nappy heads' in a commentary.  But liberals will continue to parade themselves as the only party of love, tolerance, and unconditional support of minorities....so long as they declare themselves to be liberals....even as they find excuse after excuse as to WHY they CAN'T POSSIBLY BE RACISTS.

Liberals are no different than the latent homosexual who spends years insulting gays to cover up the fact that they can't resist the lifestyle, themselves.  Eventually they get caught, and if THEY happen to be a Republican then liberals have a field day.  I'm telling you that racists are hiding within the liberal lifestyle just so they can harbor their own racist beliefs without the fear of being attacked by the liberal racist hunters.  Liberals are liars.

I agree with Brent

I don't think that Rather is racist either. But the standard isn't actual racism, it's "insensitivity", and the rules are that unfortunate use of the icons of stereotypes is "insensitive": You should have thought better.

Now all these years the libs have been using the Alinsky rulebook which says that nobody can live up to their own rules (What Christianity says in "All like sheep have gone astray.") so to gain political advantage you make people live up to their own rules. Of course admitting that liberals can't live up to their own standards, doesn't help them destroy conservatives when they do the same thing, so they deflect and rely on our generosity.

Well they are the party

that fought against the Civil Right Movement,  but memories can be conveniently short and forgiving when it suits the lib agenda.

In all fairness to these

In all fairness to these socialist wankers, I don't really consider selling watermelons or any fruit to be racist.  Granted, that's more leeway than they would give us, but we're better than they are.

This slippery slope of constant victim status for people with a slight tan is what socialists do.  When I see a guy with his white mother posing nude for a commi radical, and a muslim father that screws everything that walks or crawls- watermelon isn't even in the equation.  Obama's got bigger problems.  Essence of black ain't one of them.
