Stars & Stripes Story: Italian Ambassador Feeds Wounded US Troops

By Warner Todd Huston | June 05, 2006 | 23:56

A  A
All too often all we get are the bad stories about this war on terror from our Mainstream Media. Not only that but we only hear about our allies when they are quitting their support for US led efforts to combat terror in the world and never when they are in support or do something to help the effort. So, I suppose it isn't beyond belief that we never heard this heartwarming story anywhere in the US Media.

For the last two years, Fran O'Brien's Steak house in Washington D.C. has treated our wounded servicemen from Walter Reed Army Medical Center to a steak dinner on Friday nights. But they recently lost their lease at the Hilton Hotel in D.C. leaving the Friday night dinners in doubt.

Enter the Italian Ambassador and his staff who, on May, 21st, conjured up a full Italian dinner for 27 of our wounded heroes. When Ambassador Gianni Castellaneta, and his wife, Lila, found out that O'Brien's had lost their lease, they decided to step in to substitute lasagna for steak. AP on CO2: Boosting Its Poison Ivy Profile, Ignoring Its Nicotine Reduction Potential

By Amy Ridenour | May 30, 2006 | 00:44

A  A
I've often read that plants grow better when exposed to higher concentrations of carbon dioxide.

Yet, when the Associated Press mentions the subject, what it says is: Global warming boosts poison ivy.

The AP report, as published May 29 by the Boston Globe, begins:

Another reason to worry about global warming: more and itchier poison ivy. The noxious vine grows faster and bigger as carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere rise, researchers report Monday.

And a CO2-driven vine also produces more of its rash-causing chemical, urushiol, conclude experiments conducted in a forest at Duke University where scientists increased carbon-dioxide levels to those expected in 2050.

Today's starters-- Media: Reacting to Muhammed cartoon controversy, student newspaper prints offensive Jesus toons, nothing follows. Popular blog web presence provider Hosting Matters is down at the moment, taking a number of popular blogs down with it. Tonight is opening night of "Flight 93;" in it's scoring 94 percent positive in Rotten Tomatoes online reviews (HT Roger Simon.)

Politics:  Hillary Rodham Clinton polls better than Hillary Clinton, coinicdence or not? Howard Dean et al. start legal defense for accused "nonpartisan" CIA leaker Mary McCarthy. Jeff Goldstein has more. Dean Esmay asks readers for help with "overlooked news from Iraq" effort.

Misc: Quentin Tarantino to direct life of Jimi Hendrix movie. Pamela Anderson provides further proof that not just anyone can get an op-ed printed. France's Jacques Chirac wants to create European Google rival.

Starters: Yesterday's illegal immigration rallies attracted a lot of media and blogger attention. Of course, since most of the media favors unchecked immigration of any kind, they have a tendency to cover up the more outrageous signs that protesters were sporting Monday. If you're looking for blog coverage of the protests, head over to Instapundit.com.

Which party will benefit from illegal immigration as it gains a higher profile in the national debate? The Washington Times thinks Democrats stand the most to gain. Ace of Spades agrees, arguing that the Dems' strategy of not offering policy alternatives pays off on at least this issue.

Media: Bob Schieffer and CBS News accused of racism by fired producer. "Schieffer has a reputation for bigotry," Raylena Fields alleges. He "frequently and publicly refers to a newsroom assistant as 'Brownie' due to the complexion of his skin." Fields also claims she saw the anchor address a black correspondent as "boy." In middle eastern media, Saudi television regularly allows anti-semitic and anti-American rhetoric on its government-owned airwaves. MEMRI exposes one of the more virulent ranters who compares American "neocons" (aka Jews) of being the "closest thing there is to Nazism." (ht LGF).

How did the media cover guns last week? Alphecca blog's Jeff Soyer answers that in his weekly roundup of press gun coverage.

Starters: China bans new non-science and tech publications. Is Bush admin's PR strategy partly to blame for low poll numbers? ABC to run new "10 Commandments" featuring low-self-esteem Moses. NY Post gossip says he was framed by billionaire.

Politics: LAT looks at leaking as necessity, crime, and public service. Democrats see pro-illegal-immigration rallies as good recruiting ground. Will Joe Lieberman seek independent bid for Senate after being targeted by liberal activists? WT looks at the race to succeed Tom DeLay as unofficial House conservative leader.

Misc: Italians turn ephithet into political slogan (and to victory?). Ultra-orthodox computer "sex commando" hackers target Israeli porn sites. Malaysian man receives phone bill for USD 218 trillion.

UPDATE 15:50. Looks like exit polls in Italy may also overestimate left-wing strength at the ballot box just like American pollsters did for the 2004 American presidential election. After appearing behind in earlier exit surveys, center-right prime minister Silvio Berlusconi seems likely to win at this point.

Today's starters: Keeping with its tradition of political fairness and neutrality, Middle Tennessee State University is continuing its journalism conference (conference called: Self-Inflicted Wounds — Fact and Fiction in Journalism: Fabrication, Plagiarism and Confidential Sources)--kicked off earlier this week by an address from that paragon of objectivity Al Gore--with a panel discussion featuring Mary Mapes. The session is entitled "Rush to Judgment? The CBS Crisis." Any NB readers in the area?

The big media story of the day, as reported earlier by NB's Mark Finkelstein, is that Katie Couric is headed over to CBS. The NYT and LAT both have good good stories the deal and its implications. Why does Couric's leaving warrant attention, asks one blogger. Another says she won't watch "Today" if it hires "View" co-host Meredith Viera.

Elsewhere in media-land, it appears Reuters and Al-Jazeera got snookered by Iraqi terrorists claiming to have shot down an American helicopter. Europe, meanwhile, seems to be adopting political censorship says the Weekly Standard.

Today's starters: Hollywood now seems to be thinking that enough time has passed since 9/11 that it's now possible to make movies about it. Is America ready for such films? Writing in Newsweek, Sean Smith and Jac Chebatoris argue no. Anoniblogger American Barbarian (HT: Ace) says it's more a case of liberals wanting the public not to remember those gut-wrenching hours. In any case, London's Guardian has a roundup on which 9/11 films are coming down the pipe. For the lazy: Oliver Stone (who recently charged sites like this one with "slandering" celebs who speak publicly about politics) and Nicolas Cage team up in a movie about NYC police officers; the director of the Bourne Supremacy is releasing another about United Flight 93, the airplane that passengers crashed (the trailer for which some are trying to keep out of theaters). Two other less-promising films include one based on the story of former paper-pusher and Bush critic Richard Clarke, and one starring the execrable Adam Sandler.

In politics: Former House GOP leader Tom DeLay announces he's resigning from congress, while GOP Senate head Bill Frist tries to rehabilitate his image among the Washington elites. Meanwhile, Democratic representative Cynthia McKinney may start having to avoid the Capitol Hill police since there's soon to be a warrant out for her arrest.

Today's starter topics: Will the media turn on John McCain if he seems inevitable as the GOP nominee? John McIntyre makes the argument that it's already beginning to happen. Would that be enough to get him the nomination? I doubt it.

Following up yesterday's item about Justice Scalia allegedly flipping off the press: in a letter to the Boston Herald, the jurist denies doing anything obscene. Also from the follow department, OJR takes a look at charges that ESPN and the AP ripped off material from blogs.

In politics, Democrats have issued their first unified position paper on anti-terrorism. Will it be enough? Bulgaria has recommitted troops to Iraq after earlier removing them. The mission is non-combat, however. Elsewhere around the world, there are reports that street gangs are beginning to prey on French college student rioters.

Last: Sci-Fi channel offers fans a chance to create their own superhero TV show. That's scary enough but it gets worse when you learn that you can't win without submitting photos of you dressed as the character.

Starter topics: Washington Post says it shouldn't have implied pro-war blogger Bill Roggio was part of military propaganda operation even as it lauds anti-war reporter as "legendary." (HT: Polipundit) Did an AP reporter plagiarize a story from a blog?

Former Reagan press secretary Lyn Nofziger dies. Supreme Court allows libel suit against NYT by man who says he was defamed as 2001 anthrax mailer. In other SCOTUS news, it appears that justice Antonin Scalia flipped the bird at the media who questioned him about his objectivity on religious matters--shortly after he left church.

Politics: ABC News's Note predicts McCain vs. Clinton in '08. (They're wrong on at least the first one.) Long-serving WH chief of staff Andy Card resigns. Congressional GOP gets Saddam regime documents posted online for anyone to analyze.

Starter topics: Mickey Kaus catches the L.A. Times deliberately editing out information about pro-illegal immigration protestors waving the Mexican flag at events. Apparently, liberal columnist Molly Ivins believes that only ex-reporters should be allowed to opine. "No one should be allowed to write opinion without spending years as a reporter," she writes.

WaPo's Howie Kurtz solves what he calls a "minor mystery" of who is behind FireDavidGregory.com. Turns out it was one of those nefarious NewsBusters, Ian Schwartz. Howie shouldn't take too much pride in his findings, though, since anyone could've discovered it doing a whois of the domain. Meanwhile, USA Today TV critic Peter Johnson tracks the speculation over whether Katie Couric will jump to CBS.

Non-media topics: Is marriage only for white people? And why are universities suddenly starting up courses in "porn studies?"
