AP: Some 'Capt. Hussein' Proof? Yet, More Questions Remain

As last reported on NewsBusters, the AP has been under fire for a November '06 report that 6 Iraqi Sunnis were burned alive in sectarian violence a claim that was never adequately proven and is hotly disputed by both Iraqi Government and US Military officials. And, as many Bloggers investigated (such as Michelle Malkin and Patrick Frey of Patterico's Pontifications among many more), the identity of the AP's lone source seemed impossible to establish.

At last it seems some light has been shed on the existence of this capt. Hussein as we get the story from Michelle Malkin's site. Michelle has been the chief bulldog in efforts to reveal the AP's mysterious source.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - The Interior Ministry acknowledged Thursday that an Iraqi police officer whose existence had been denied by the Iraqis and the U.S. military is in fact an active member of the force, and said he now faces arrest for speaking to the media.

It looks like we just might have an answer -- though it is not yet assured that this person is, indeed, the "capt. Jamil Hussein" the AP used as a source. Still, the revelation that such a man actually exists seems to answer to the doubts that the AP actually had a live source for this story.

But it's only a start toward solving the controversies surrounding this AP story.

There are still many questions that dog this story and the AP is not out of the woods yet where it concerns the truth of whether 6 Iraqi Sunnis were burned alive or not. And that, not the existence of this capt. Hussein, has always been the central point to the dispute. The existence of the source always was a sidelight, a distraction, to the story, not the main problem.

There is not a shred of proof that the 6 burning Iraqis incident ever happened and this is an issue that the AP has still not satisfactorily addressed. There's no independent source, no burnt bodies ... little of the story has checked out other than the source, at long last. And THAT has taken over a month and a lot of recrimination and controversy to straighten out.

Central points of this story

  • Did the incident ever even happen and where is the proof?
  • Why does the AP publish news stories based on only one witness with no corroboration?
  • How long has the AP been publishing stories on the word of only one witness?

As I wrote in my first report on this issue on NewsBusters:

And, it has always been a staple of journalism that more than one source be required to publish a story reported as "fact". After all, if only ONE source is ever needed for a story, then anyone can publish anything as "fact" merely upon any single person's say so.

The AP's inability to substantiate their source was but a small part of the questions the AP faces overs its credibility here.

Expect the AP to wash its hands of this issue, though, imagining it is a closed case now that we seem to have proof of the existence of capt. Hussein.

As for the rest of us, there is a long way to go before we could be satisfied that the AP is practicing due diligence in their reporting.

I, like I'm sure many others,

I, like I'm sure many others, used to take the AP byline as reasonable indication that a story had been properly researched and "vetted" before release. How long have I been suckered by these people?

Warner, your "bullet points" say it all. One witness, even if he DOES exist (an issue that should NEVER have been in doubt) does not constitute "proof." Two points with one stone. And the third point: how can we ever know the answer to that one? It brings much of the AP's past reportage into serious question.

This, together with the recent Reuters problems, makes the wires look more like our own MSM with each passing day. Does UPI even exist anymore? Those used to be the "Big Three" among the wire-services. With AP and Reuters seemingly digging their own graves credibility-wise, what else is left?

Now that even Hume has fessed

Now that even Hume has fessed up that the AP story has been "vindicated"

No retraction. Move on to the next pack of lies. A year from now, the average right-wing mitwit will still insist the AP fabricated the whole affair, Saddam was behind 9-11, we found wmd's, We had Bin Laden in the crosshairs until Clinton said "let him go", and Gilligan was a maritime hero.

Well, joe, let's see...the AP

Well, joecommie, let's see...the AP apparently did fabricate (or at least did not fact check) the 4 torched mosques and the 6 burned iraqis, the only ones I've heard say Saddam was behind 9-11 are liberals saying conservatives said it, they did find chemical weapons (binary gas shells), Sudan did offer to arrest Bin Laden at least twice, and both times Bubba couldn't be bothered to pull it out of Monica long enough to say "yes", and apparently the depiction of the special forces team being in place to take out Bin Laden, but  Bubba and his CIA head didn't have the balls to give the go ahead was accurate, and, only a libtard such as yourself would try to say conservatives think Gilligan was a maritime hero.  Unlike you on the left, we of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy know the difference between fact and fantasy.

The right was beating this story to death. They were not concerned with the veracity of the burned to death story. Eric Boehlert pointed out the fact that Capt Hussein was not the only source. They wanted to discredit the messenger. They dont care about the truth. They willing to accept anything their chosen leaders tell them bc they are good little authoritarians. This all started bc the US military said the capt didnt exist and we all know the US military doesnt lie.

While this has been going for weeks hundreds of US soldiers have died and thousands of Iraqis have been brutally killed. But we are suppose to believe that the AP invented this man to undermine the US, that we are in actuality winning this war.

The "Jamil Hussein" non-scandal has been roaring through the right-wing blogosphere and was beginning to seep into Fox. Brit Hume distancing himself from the non-story is noteworthy.

There is a major problem with

There is a major problem with this blog - the AP story had more than one source.  Initially, there was a very brief story that cited Capt. Hussein as the source.  It was all of about 3 paragraphs.

Then there was a much longer story with more sources.  No mention of that, here.

And if our media is not to ever use just one source, how will they report Tony Snow (Job's) so informative press briefings?

Well, they aren't ever going

Well, they aren't ever going to apologize... ...because for the bloggers the issue isn't Hussein, it's the news. Whether Hussein was a fictitious person or a shill for the insurgents, the bloggers see the issue as the same: unreliable, pro-terrorist propaganda being disseminated by a liberal media determined to undermine our efforts to bring freedom and democracy to the Middle East. The truth hurts, and it hurts the pro-war movement most of all. The best way to assuage the pain is to discredit the truth as a lie. The next best way is to discredit it as anti-American.

AP has quite the history now

AP has quite the history now of blatant misreporting and skewering of the 'news', as well as some interesting connections to terrorists.  There have been many examples of this.  They have a serious credibility problem.

The media are not doing a good job of holding up their 'journalistic standards' in general.  Pointing this out is not the problem, their inept, deliberately biased and weak reporting is.  Bringing Tony Snow into your statement is totally ridiculous.

It does no speak to Hume's or Fox's credibility that they were fed this story from Michelle Malkin and her ilk.
