NY Times theatre reporter Jesse Green's "Not Everybody Loves Patricia" is about actress Patricia Heaton, former co-star of "Everyone Loves Raymond" who is currently appearing in an off-Broadway play. Heaton is also nearly unique in Hollywood for being an outspoken pro-lifer, which explains the slightly mean-spirited Times headline.
"It isn't so much her views that cause her trouble as her unwillingness to finesse them for public consumption. She is compulsively honest, though she feels that’s not so much a virtue as 'an illness, like Tourette’s.' Even her more extreme positions are stated without hedging: If it were up to her, she said, there would be no abortion for any reason. But she offers such thoughts with a sense of helplessness, as if she were trapped by the implications of her core principles."
Green's piece is a mixed but mostly positive view of Heaton and her lonely stance in liberal Hollywood, and details some of the vituperation she gets from leftists. But why is Heaton's opposition to abortion "extreme"?
Has the Times ever used "extreme" to describe the wackily leftist or paranoid anti-Bush views of entertainers like Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, Alec Baldwin, or Harry Belafonte? Aren't their comments on Bush, Iraq, and Hugo Chavez far more extreme than Heaton's pro-life beliefs?

My guess is that they stated her opinion as extreme because she doesn't believe in abortion for ANY reason, which implies that she wouldn't want a woman to get an abortion even if the woman was a rape victim or in mortal danger because of the pregnancy.

January 2, 2007 - 16:31 ET by sdbDoesn't that just add to the victim count?
More than that, it adds to the victim's trauma.
"But in the only major study of pregnant rape victims ever done, Dr. Sandra Mahkorn found that 75 to 85 percent chose against abortion."
"The research shows that nearly all the women who ended the pregnancy with abortion regretted that decision. Conversely, those who gave birth to their child were all happy they did."
Pregnant rape victims who get an abortion report that the abortion gave them feelings of being violated all over again, adding to their trama and increasing feelings of guilt, depression, and even suicidal thoughts. Those that gave birth said that it helped in the healing process and helped them overcome the rape. If we are going to let women have abortions because of rape, let's make sure they have all the information, instead of just assuming that abortion what the woman wants or is best.

Did the stranger rapist commit another crime in addition to the rape (murder another family member)?

dear balboa:
January 2, 2007 - 19:05 ET by tumbler_2007Bal:
Does it occur to you, RE: no abortion for any reason,
That this cannot be seen as extreme if you live aware of life and death. An abortion isn't murder, or criminal, or infanticide because the little victim dies during a procedure. Millions of little victims die every day in the world without incurring God's wrath. They die of more or less natural causes. It's not on account of their death at all.
It's always on account of a murderer. Not a single abortion ever takes place for whatever reason, that isn't PERPETRATED by either the coat hanger-wielders or by physicians. A person is killing an innocent person. Rape victims are innocent. Their killers are not. That's why basically every abortion is always murder. One kills, the other (innocent) is killed.
When the choice is to save either a mother or the fetus, it's not murder, but lawful medicine. Patricia Heaton is absolutely correct. No exceptions, all unborn babies have the right to life.

January 2, 2007 - 15:36 ET by Senior ChiefGood for you Ms. Heaton and for the mothers and fetuses. Hollywood is indeed a wacko community, where everyone is sleeping with just anyone who they want to. And I'm glad to hear someone is against the trend. If I remember right, Ms. Heaton had a political ad against embryonic stem cell research opposite to Michael Fox' position during the last election. So, she's consistent and it wasn't a hoax. I agree with her statement 100 percent, "if it were up to her, there would be no abortion for any reason". For only God can giveth and taketh life. Other than that is a crime.

Guns don't kill, murderers are.), pro-life (fetus is a baby and somebody has to protect them. Perverts and criminals don't need protection).
I am also pro-small government, anti-corrupt politicians, anti-career politicians (term limits), fiscal-conservative, anti-lobbyist. I'm also anti-labor unions (NEA-NTU, etc.), anti-welfare programs (especially those who are able to work. These people are stealing money from you and me). And very anti-illegal immigration. January 2, 2007 - 16:29 ET by Dave RSo people who profess a pro-life view are now considered extremists by the liberal dominated media. How much farther into the abyss is this country going to sink before we start hearing people opposed to and abhorred by the sexual exploitation of children being described as extremist prudes by the MSM?
Am I going a little over the wall here?
Based on what I have been seeing recently in certain parts of Europe, as well as what I have observed parents allowing their young daughters to wear in public in this country, I do not expect we will have to sink all that much deeper.

January 2, 2007 - 18:46 ET by Eric TurnerNo, you're not "going a little over the wall here." Four examples why it's just a matter of time before we allow pedophiles access to younger teenagers:
1) We already currently permit teenage girls (in many states) to get an abortion without parental consent. A girl can simply go to a counselor at school and bing, bam, boom, she's going to get an abortion without her parents knowing about it.
2) We currently punish children as young as 12 with capital punishment or other adult punishment when they commit "adult" crimes. We don't think twice about this. And although many of us would say abortion without parental consent is wrong, must of us would say we should punish children with adult punishment when they commit adult crimes.
3) We permit children under the age of 18 to be accessible to all sorts of sexual information with the excuse that they have sex anyway, so we should "teach" the right way to "not get pregnant." (let me also include the here that many children are exposed to all sorts of sexual depravity [i.e. homosexuality] at very young ages under the guise of "diversity.")
4) Too many Americans want to emulate Europe with it's so-called "progressive" ideas and secular governments and society that they will gladly follow them down the primrose path to destruction if they could.
This is something I've been thinking of for some time and believe it's just a matter of time before we end up lowering the legal age of responsibility (i.e. sexual relations with adults). We continue treating kids like adults in regards to abortion, sexual instruction, lack of moral guidance (or compass), etc and yet (now you got to think like a liberal here, so follow me).we treat them like children when it comes to actually having sex. We either treat them like children all the time, or eventually they will be treated like adults all the time (courtesy of the liberals who will state the rights of children are being infringed upon). There can be no ambiguity here.
I won't even get into the exposure of sex and perversion through advertising, videos, games, television, and movies.
Once a society makes a determination that there are no moral absolutes the slope gets pretty slippery and it's just a race to the bottom after that.
