Curry Draws Parallel Between Watergate and Today's 'Troubled, Murky Times'

Photo of Mark Finkelstein.

You just knew it. "Today" was going to find a way to use the death of President Ford to take a shot at George Bush. You had to wait till the very end of the first half-hour, but sure enough, it came. The preceding twenty minutes had been a respectful review of the life of the 38th president. And after all, if there is one Republican president it's not too hard for the MSM to like, it was Ford, who replaced the hated Richard Nixon. Tom Brokaw even admitted that, in retrospect, Ford had made the right decision in pardoning Nixon.

But then came Ann Curry. Her mild demeanor can obscure one of the more baldly partisan hearts. Speaking with NBC consultant and presidential historian Michael Beschloss about Ford's handling of the Watergate aftermath Curry observed:

"I can't help but think we are now in troubled times as a nation. Very different, but still troubled times. Are there any lessons to be taken away, on this day when we mourn former President Gerald Ford, as we look to the future that still looks very murky."

View video here.

Yes, Ann. There is a lesson to be taken away, and you just proved it. Just as when Gerald Ford was president, the MSM will always try to undercut a Republican president.

I'm hardly old enough to &quo

I'm hardly old enough to "remember" Carter, but it seems to me he does have at least one thing in common with G.W. Bush.

They are both picked up the pieces their criminal Predecessors left them.

What the hell are you talking

What the hell are you talking about. Jimmy Carter didn't have any 'pieces' to pick up from his 'criminal Predecessor'.  I am not a big Ford fan, but he healed our nation at a time of our biggest constitutional crisis ever.  I still think pardoning Nixon was wrong, but I have NEVER equated crime with Ford.

My, skins are getting thin indeed.  Ann didn't mention the current president at all in that statement.

Right. She was just analog

Right. She was just analogizing the Watergate era to the current era as "troubled, murky times". No slight at all intended toward Pres. Bush. Silly me.

If a reference to current ti

If a reference to current times as being "troubled" is by definition a slight against president Bush, then what do you make of this statement from a bit more than a month ago?

"I appreciate the fact that you have volunteered to wear our uniform in these troubled times" - George W. Bush, Nov. 21, 2006

Duh.... GWB was not making

Duh.... GWB was not making any comparison. Ann was. She was trying to tie the "murky" aura of the watergate scandal to these "times", and by default, to this administration.

Although, she was more right than she knows... with William Jefferson Clinton being the only president who was ever impeached, while Ford healed the nation after Nixon resigned.

Bill "I didn't have sex..." Clinton was the second to be impeached.  Andrew Johnson was also impeached.

I did not have sex with that woman, during these troubled times. -Slick Willie

That may not have been the exact quote, but like the MSM, that's what we are reporting.

You forget that Bush fans don

You forget that Bush fans don't count when he contradicts himself.  It happens quite often and it's scary how comical it is to watch the poor guy speak.  I like watching his speeches but then I feel scared that this moron is in charge of our country and has a huge influence on the world.

I hope Bush is the first Presiedent to not to be impeached but sent to jail for the criminal he is.

"It's bad in Iraq. Does that help?" --George W. Bush, after being asked by a reporter whether he's in denial about Iraq

"The only way we can win is to leave before the job is done." --George W. Bush, Greeley, Colo., Nov. 4, 2006

People used to try and make excuses that he hadn't had much experience talking but after 6 years he's still the same stupid idiot.

Please list the Articles of I

Please list the Articles of Impeachment you would have him impeached and convicted under, and why he should go to jail.

And really, calling him a "stupid idiot" is just...well, childish.  But then, I can't imagine you are a day over 15.  Besides, Bush has college degrees from Ivy League universities, has owned a baseball team, and unseated a popular governor in an election upset.  Have you done ANYTHING in your life that comes close to this?

(Note: I am not a big Bush fan, but he is light years above and beyond the alternative.)

I'll answer that for him Unsane.

I'll answer that for him Unsane. No, he hasn't, he's a "chronic" , and has experience toking the dope, and that's about it.

Come on Unsane, Chronic on

Come on Unsane, Chronic once built a tinker toy fort without any instructions. Of course, that was 2 weeks ago.

Hey Chronic... top these Clinton quotes...

"It depends upon what the meaning of IS IS."

"Oral sex is not sex..."

"I did not have sex with that woman, Ms. Lewinski..."

"I loathe the military.."

"I didn't know about it till I read it in the papers.." - when asked why he had claimed executive privilege. ONLY the PRESIDENT can claim executive privilege. How could he not know about it before reading it in the papers.

"I can spend your money better than you can." - when asked why he wouldn't consider tax cuts when there was a surplus.

"My grandmother was one quarter Cherokee.." - another lie.

"It depends on how you define "alone" ... there were a lot of times when we were alone, but I never really thought we were."

"You know the one thing that's wrong with this country? Everyone gets a chance to have their fair say." - a statement he made when someone disagreed with him at a speech he gave in Philadelphia.

"My lawyer has already made my statement.." - when asked about the rape of Juanita Broderick.

When asked if he went to war with Iraq to derail the impeachment
vote: “I don’t think any serious person would believe that any
President would do such a thing." - President Clinton (Dec 1998).

salivating

Right. The MSM would never make the connection between President Nixon and President Bush. Just because guys like Scarborough recently had an entire panel discussion devoted to exacly that, why would you think these neutral "jounalists" would do such a thing? Do you really believe they are paranoid about Nixon and Bush? Do you think they are salivating at the thought of impeaching President Bush on trumpt up charges? How could you?

NEVER,NEVER trust a liberal

Trumped up is correct, ivesee

Trumped up is correct, iveseenitall. The MSM is gearing up to cram impeachment down our throats. Evidence? Forget about it.. we don't need no stinkin evidence! Just keep repeating all the lies until it all sticks to the wall.

Watergate

Right. The liberals have been waiting thirty years to return to the glory days of Watergate, a time when they realized their true power to influence through lies and innuendos. Since that "victory", they have completley "occupied" the newsroom, spewing their venom with visions of Nixon dancing in their heads.

NEVER,NEVER trust a liberal

I suppose there is no evidenc

I suppose there is no evidence except for invading a country that never attacked us, making up the reason to go in to war, have no plan of what to do after invading, sending nearly 3000 soldiers to die, taking rights away without our permission, having ties to the country that did attack us on 9/11, having cabinet members who were charged and convicted of crimes, and overall making the country much worse than before he took office.

I know everything isn't Bush's fault but I feel he should take blame for allowing 9/11.  I mean how much more of a hint do you need than "Bin Laden to Attack U.S. by plane".  Wouldn't want to inform the airports to be alert for any of the known terrorists who were allowed to board the planes.

As far as the patriot act and the wireless phone tapping, I think Ben Franklin's quote is perfect.  "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."

I don't think many of the Founding Fathers would be too happy to see the Liberty that many people died for being squandered because Bush uses scare tactics.  My favorite is his tactic that if we pull out of Iraq the enemies will follow back to the U.S. and declare victory.  If you look at Jim Jones and that tragedy, Jones used a very similar scare to keep members from leaving Jonestown.

Also did you notice the ties between Bush and the Saudi Royal family, and when talk of withdrawal of the troops comes up, the Saudis declare they will begin funding Iran if we pull out.  Coincedence?  Particulary if the Saudis are supposedly our friend and Prince Bandir "Bush" is such good friend with the Bushes.

I hope they impeach him but then we're stuck with Android Cheney, he's more machine than human.  So I just keep saying to myself only 2 more years, let's hope he doesn't screw things up worse and that we're able to recover.

Unbacked babble

So you must not have supported WWII.  Germany and Italy didn't bomb Pearl Harbor.  We didn't have a plan of what to do after invading, beyond setting up zones of occupation.

I want a full list of these rights that Bush has taken away.  I want a list of Constitutional Amendments that have been abrogated since Bush took office.  Or do you just want to cry like other Leftists: "Waaaaahhh!!!  The Big Bad Man took away my rights!!!  Waaaaahhh!!!"  I really don't know why the Left cries so much about rights.  They will do NOTHING in the end to fight for them, because they don't think that they are fought for.  They think they get them just by being born.  That is why when they get riddled with bullets by  the bady guys, they will be the ones doing nothing but crying "WAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!  YOU CAN'T DO THIS!!!!   I HAVE RIGHTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"  Indeed.  There were three thousand Americans that have had their rights permanently taken from them back on 11 September 2001, but I don't see you or other Leftists crying about THAT.

I sure would like to know how the country is much worse since Bush took office.  Why, is is because the government is not PERSONALLY spoon-feeding chronic breakfast, lunch and dinner for free every day?

Why should Bush take ANY blame for 11 September 2001?  With that vague a threat, what did you want him to do?  Shut down the country indefinitely?

As for the wiretapping of phone calls to countries that sponsor terrorism and the Patriot Act, I think the Unsane Corollary to Ben Franklin's favorite quote of choice for mealy-mouthed Leftists who REFUSE to consider the costs of freedom is perfect: "You can't enjoy freedom and liberty when dead."

Bush uses scare tactics? Again, I cannot believe you fear the President more that people WHO WANT TO KILL YOU FOR NOT FOLLOWING THE FIVE PILLARS THEIR WAY.  But that's how mealy-mouthed Leftists who refuse to fight for freedom think, I suppose.  And I guess the Dems don't use any either: "If Republicans run Congress, everyone will be homeless!  No one will get Social Security!  Racism will return, churches will burn!!!"  etc.

I am POSITIVE the Arab, Sunni Saudis, who fear Persian, Shi'ite Iran, will just instantly begin funding Iran.  Right.

Suck it up, child.  You get to deal with President Bush until 2009.  Although I would note that if Bush is impeached and removed from office (care to outline the Articles of Impeachment for me?  All Leftists run away from that question, though I can't understand why), it would be amusing.  Please read the 22nd Amendment to see why.  Very, very carefully.

"Socialism is the philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy."  -Sir Winston Churchill, British statesman (1874-1965)

Please tell me chronic....Wha

Please tell me chronic....

What is it that you do not understand about the fact that the islamofascists wish to annihilate us?

Please look up that word before you reply.  Annihilate.

Secondly, please describe for me, in detail, what right has been taken away from you, under the Bush administration.  Do you have to dial twice on your cell phone?  Two fewer channels on the cable?  Made to wait in line at a restaurant?  What?  I am hoping for a thoughtful reply from you, instead of DailyKos talking points.  Exactly, specifically, what RIGHT do you no longer have?  Please expand.

Finally, please let me know what kind of car you drive....or do you rely on that imported oil to get around?  Or are you walking?

Put up or shut up time.

Thanks.  Have a great day.

chronic you liberal fool

chronic you liberal fool, Ben Franklin was calling on the citizens to take up arms and fight. They who stayed home and cowered ( to purchase a little temporary safety - before the enemy overran them) - instead of fighting for Liberty from the opressors, deserved neither the Liberty they would be given when we won the war, nor the safety they would recieve from our win.

You FOOL leftists have twisted Ben Franklin's words exactly BACKWARDS, and very, very few of you are aware of it.

You're a shameful JOKE.

"..making up the reaso

"..making up the reason to go in to war..

Such a tired, debunked, refrain. You would much rather have a president who ignored information reported by EVERY intelligence agency in the world.

"..have no plan of what to do after invading.."
Of course we had a plan. To bring a democratic government to Iraq. Mission accomplished.

"..sending nearly 3000 soldiers to die.."
They were sent to fight for freedom, not to die. The bad guys are responsible for their deaths.

"..taking rights away without our permission.."
Please detail all the rights that have been taken from you.

"..having ties to the country that did attack us on 9/11.."
No country attacked us. Terrorists attacked us.

"..having cabinet members who were charged and convicted of crimes.."
Please list all cabinet members who have been charged & convicted of crimes.

"..and overall making the country much worse than before he took office."
Riiigghhtt... Booming economy. Booming housing market. Low unemployment. No further terrorist attacks. Lower taxes.

That's just one month. Dork. You see? Research is easy.

Ignorance is bliss. It's easier to repeat a mindless slogan than to do some actual research.

Ann Curry isn't OLD ENOUGH to

Ann Curry isn't OLD ENOUGH to remember or appreciate the times surrounding Watergate!

You can thank public education/higher education for the brain washing of this journalist among others with the "crimes and misdemeanors" of the GOP.....

She's simply reiterating the script she learned in school and applying it to everything GOP........she manifests the critical thinking of a baboon.....

Some things just NEVER change......sheesh!

Nowhere to Run....Nowhere To Hide.....

donsales,I believe Ann Curry

donsales,

I believe Ann Curry was 50 in November, so she should be old enough to remember Watergate.

Teenybopper

True, but she'd have been ages 16 to 18 during that era.  Was she paying that much attention?  Possibly, but then, maybe not.  I'm her age.  I was certainly aware of Watergate, but I wouldn't say I had an informed opinion back then.

"Ann Curry was 50 in Nov

"Ann Curry was 50 in November....."

So YOU are of the opinion that someone who is in the 8th or 9th grade is fully capable of digesting and assessing national news??????

What are you? A moron or something?

Like I said.....she was too young....period.

Nowhere to Run....Nowhere To Hide.....

donsales,Hey, you don't have

donsales,

Hey, you don't have to be rude. I am only one year older, I certainly remember. I sure remember how upset my parents were over the entire ordeal. No she probably didn't have an opinion but I am sure her household talked about what was going. I am on your side, so back off from the name calling if you don't mind!

And what EXACTLY is the point

And what EXACTLY is the point you were endeavoring to make in reply to my first posting????

"I'm on your side....."

So your parents were upset and you felt their pain......o.k......

Once again, do you suppose Ann Curry formulated her opinions about Watergate from "personal" experience, or from the history of the event taught in schools then and now?

I'm confused.........

Nowhere to Run....Nowhere To Hide.....

What heck is your problem? Yo

What heck is your problem? You are making a mountain out of nothing.  My ONLY point is that Ann Curry is 50 and should remember at least something about Watergate. I wasn't try to insight a riot from you. Like I said before I am not a moron and don't call me one again!

You're right Mark, the drive-

You're right Mark, the drive-by-media and the left has no decency at all. They've shown their true colors again and again. For crying out loud, let president Ford rest for now and respect the family... The media folks are the antogonists, and pessimists group of people. They can't wait GW to die soon either, so they can pulverize his character. Politically speaking, as long as the media leans to the far left, there will be feud in our political process. It will be perceived as a weakness in governing our people as the world sees it for we, Americans can't get along.

Journalists, aren't they suppose to be "neutral". Just asking.

The only lesson to be learned

The only lesson to be learned Anne is that the leftist media still have the power to lie, cheat and steal repeatedly when it comes to the leftist/dem's which is their own agenda, having them back in power...therefore your so-called power, you witch. Your ilk drove out Nixon, and your ilk is trying to do the same to this great President when it comes to sticking to his guns and protecting this nation...you filthy leftist.

The media have no accountability in all forms....something needs to be changed about this....prison doors not Pulitzer's.

"If we ever forget that we are a Nation Under God....then we will be a Nation Gone Under."  Ronald Reagan

Ann, no you don't.

"I can't help but think ..."

Ann, no you don't.

I am always amazed at how the loons on the Left and in the Democrat Party keep juxtaposing disparate unrelated things and drawing conclusions from that.

One sees them come on this site frequently and they want to take separate isolated historical events that are fairly complex within their own context and tie them together to prove some silly idea they come up with.  Aside from the two year old toddler logic behind this exercise it is insulting to the intelligence of the five year old child and up to the grownup.

Oh yeah, they aren't grown up.  It's just a game over power,  My bad.

I'm kinda tired of it myself.
