Chris Matthews's apparently inexorable plunge off the Olbermann end of the pool continued on Thursday's Hardball.
Matthews [seen in file photo] discussed the Scooter Libby trial with Newsweek investigative reporter Michael Isikoff and former associate independent counsel Scott Fredericksen. Matthews put it to Isikoff that the case against Libby is "open and shut," a conclusion that Isikoff declined to endorse.
Fredericksen stated that, to the contrary, there are many defenses available to Libby and that "you've got the Vice-President coming in to testify for him . . . you've got a darn good defense."
As Fredericksen continued to sketch a defense, Matthews interjected:
"Do you think Cheney is going to lie in court?"
Fredericksen - with Isikoff laughing nervously off-camera: "I would never suspect that our Vice-President is going to lie."
Matthews:
"Do you think Cheney has already been to the President of the United States begging for a pardon here?"
Isikoff opined that in light of the current political context - Iraq plus Dem control of Congress - a pardon for Libby was not in the cards.

Matthews
December 22, 2006 - 07:21 ET by Senior ChiefMatthews is just a foolish "journalist" and it shows in his line of questioning which leans to the left bigtime. Libby's public life has been ruined, specifically by one named Joe Wilson. Wilson is fighting not to testify in court in this case, while the vice president has been presumed to lie in court. Matthews is just so hypocritical and full of $#@!. Why don't he criticize the deeds his fellow fellow looney have done, Sandy Berger caught stealing clasified documents!

December 22, 2006 - 15:45 ET by Andrew H.Right, Senior Chief--it's an absurd question. Vice President Cheney would never and will not lie under oath (or any other way). He's not a slime dim after all and has no reason to protect a corrupt administration like a clinton whitehouse--where the games never ceased.
Matthews is dim. Mathews is a dim.

December 23, 2006 - 15:57 ET by mattmIt's completely expected for libs to think Republicans would lie under oath because that's exactly what libs do. It's part of their game: accuse others of what you do yourself. Billy boy is the perfect example.
If people like Matthews were truly concerned with politician ethics they would have lead the charge for getting Slickmeister booted.
The media should hold politicians under the microscope, but they seem to lose their grip on it when it's a Democrat, like Billy, Hilly, Berger, Wilson, Jefferson, Reid etc. etc. etc.

December 22, 2006 - 08:08 ET by dan victoriI can't believe either of one of these political hacks have not either been arrested or at least shown to be the scum bags they are for using their offices for pure political and monetary gains. Especially Valerie Plame. As far as Chris Mathews. Again, I will continue to repeat myself, the fair minded guest on his show, which I admit are far and few between need to call him on his bias.

December 22, 2006 - 08:32 ET by paperheadI cannot stand more than five minutes of Softball with Matthews especially after the election. Once Fitzgerald finally admitted to having no case, that should have been the end of it but no, these liberal broadcasters continue to believe that Cheney, Rove and others are still guilty. Who cares if Libby lied? It was his own damn fault. He made the decision to lie and he should pay the price. Cheney is not going to lie and that is why he is willing to testify. Everyone on the right knows that Joe Wilson is lying through his teeth and that is why you won't see him testify. I just wish we could get him on a perjury charge though.

So Chris, do you like my questions, I'm just copying your style. I have to wonder about your drug habit? Do you like to snort cocaine using a stir straw or a regular straw?
Hey, maybe MSNBC will make me the commentator for a new show called Screwball, where I make unsubstanciated accusations using questions and statements like, "He was sober today" in reference to Ted Kennedy. Or "She decided not to have him killed today" in reference to Hillary Clinton.

December 22, 2006 - 09:03 ET by MerlinMark,
The one thing I haven't gotten my little mind full of mush around is, I thought that the leak has been found to be Richard Armitage (although I'll admit, I haven't paid full attention to this).
But that being said, I don't understand why this has gone this far? Isn't this part of a civil suit filed by the Wilson's on damage to "outing Plame" as a CIA covert? I thought that too had been discredited as she was not "covert" (at least what I remember reading).
I understand the issue of perjury as it is supposed to attach to this case, but honestly, I don't know how many people could remember exactly what they said about anything 3 years ago. Add to that, that Wilson had stated that "My wife was not a clandestine officer the day that Bob Novak blew her identity" (interview with Wolf Blitzer on CNN), I just don't see where this has any meat to it. (Again, I haven't stayed on top of this, but it just seems like a lot for nothing here against Libby).
As for Matthews, this guy is a loon. He loves to beat up on Republicans, but gives the Dems a pass. His so called "hardball" points are only directed to the right, but the issues (no matter what they are) facing the left...a softball even my youngest son could knock out of the park!

December 22, 2006 - 09:39 ET by SportPoliticsMatthews should bring Joy Behar from the view on his show for the full hour. They could both loft their left loon theories in total agreement. It would all be excusable because all the commenters would have to speculate that they were only joking. ( Even though they wouldn't be. ) Which is pretty much where Matthews has wound up, a joker who finally forgot he was making a funny.
Strong defense
December 22, 2006 - 10:11 ET by dagdaI think Libby has a strong defense. Having been in a high stress job where I was making decisions every 15 minutes, I had at least one situation where I could not remember approving something that I actually had approved some months before. I have a lot of empathy for Libby's position and think it is highly likely that is what happened. That is what he is saying happened and speaking from personal experience, I know it is possible for it to happen. Chris Matthews, on the other hand, is just the village idiot who got a news program.

December 22, 2006 - 10:14 ET by saw the lightRemember, once it was public knowledge that Richard Armitage was the source of the leak of the non-classified job held by Wilson's wife, Matthews stated that the story was now "too complicated" to cover. But insinuating that the Vice President will lie on the stand is completely over the top (that being the standard for the left). Seems like Matthews wants to have his (yellow)cake and eat it too.
And why would Cheney be begging the President for a pardon when Libby has not been convicted of a crime? It seems to me that after all this plays out, it may well be good ol' Joe Wilson who is needing a pardon.

December 22, 2006 - 10:31 ET by SMGalbraithFor some unfathomable reason, Matthews has been after Dick Cheney for about 20 years. If you'll recall, back during the Gulf War in 1988, Matthews penned column after column warning about the dangers from - who? - Hussein controlling Kuwait? No, Cheney and the hawks in the Pentagon.
The only thing that has changed in this storyline is that Matthews substitutes "neoconservatives" for "hawks."
Bizarre.
Remember: If Matthews had had his way policy-wise these past two decades, Saddam Hussein would still be in power, would be in control of Kuwait (and probably the oil fields of eastern Saudi Arabia) and have nuclear weapons.
But we'd have stability, according to Matthews.

Gee ahhhh, I dunno Chris, are you going to lie on your show?
Of course Libby is guilty, Chris! After all, he's a republican is he not? Why, we don't need no stinking trial, just send him straight to the slammer and throw the key away! On second thought, forget the slammer, why dont we send him to the gallows? Better yet, Chris, why not just take him out behind the courthouse and have him shot!
I think Christopher is so burned up with vile hatred for conservatives, and Cheney in particular, that he now appears to have completely lost his grip on reality.

December 22, 2006 - 11:35 ET by Red JeepI think Matthews is projecting. Since Matthews would lie in court then everyone must, specially if it is a “white” lie or a lie about sex.
But with the Libby case prosecutors like Fitzgerald in this case and Nifong in the Duke rape case are why we can’t have the death penalty in this country. Can you imagine if this were a death penalty case and not a perjury case? Fitzgerald would be determined to hang Mr. Libby from Vice President Cheney’s office window, whether guilty or not. Get in these prosecutors's way at your peril.
I hope when this is over Mr. Libby can sue, win and collect many millions of dollars.

December 22, 2006 - 11:38 ET by acaiguanaForget Matthews, think about his guests on the show.
If I were asked to be on his show, my reaction would be, "Gee, I don't think I want to be shown in this context. It will reflect on my personal credibility.
"After all, Matthews has no credibility except that which he derives from his guests."
That would be my thinking.
So, one should begin to recognize that guests on the Olbermann, Matthews and Stewart show are really only hurting themselves. This unabashed desparation of the guests to get on TV has caused them to remove standards from their own lives.
I don't think anyone's standing with middle-America is helped by exposing themselves to this environment where obvious wild speculation worthy of the weirdest imagination is allowed to run rampant unchecked or unbalanced.
Chris may be losing it from a mental health point of view. It seems to me that a lot of the loony leftists are showing colors they never had the gumption to drape out before.
All in all, it is good for the GOP to and bad for the Pelosi's and Clinton's of the world to see their fringe displayed in publice more often than not. Do you think the angst one reads about from the Left MSM regarding Christmas is really the hangover from having given these idiots some idea that they are actually making progress in their unbridled push for absolute power?
I sure hope so.

Newsbusters needs stop wasting time on 'comedy' news shows.
December 22, 2006 - 12:37 ET by Jonah JohansenThis site is 'News' busters, there is sufficient bias and dishonesty on the part of the ‘ liberal’ media establishment ABC,NBC,CBS, NYT,WP AP; without going after the ‘comedy’ news establishment. Exposing the lies and despicable behavior of the comedy shows, right next to David Gregory's clownish behavior, blurs the distinction between; someone acting like a jerk, who is paid to act like a jerk and someone like David Gregory, who theoretically is being paid to be a newsman and simply chooses to act like a jerk.
The Daily show is on the "Comedy" Channel for a reason. Bill Mahr is a comedian and master of the comic hyperbole, nothing more. ‘The View’ is an embarrassment to all thinking women. Caferty is a blessing in disguise, his moronic venom, alerts the casual viewer to the fact that CNN is a liberal ‘views’ network not a serious ‘news’ network.
Olberman and Matthews are special cases, are not on the surface comedy shows, their shows are promoted as serious news discussion on a news channel, which is connected with NBC News. The NBC allows its brand to be tarnished by these frauds and used by these DNC sock puppets for a kind of pseudo legitimacy. Matthews doubles as a NBC Network news analyst /commentator and misrepresents his show as being equally hard on Democrats and Republicans.
Olberman is not just hateful; his show is not just ugly and venomous; he actually crosses the line into real hard core demagoguery, ala Pravda. His overt lying, twisted logic, disingenuous viciousness, actually outdoes many of the leftist blogs (which is quite an accomplishment) If it were not for the FCC, I am positive he would indulge in the "one profanity per sentence" style they so love. Reporting Olberman's latest outrage implies that their are times when he is not a leftist hate monger.
Maybe a year ago "Hardball" could have been called a liberally biased news discussion show. The show has gone so far off the track to the left, that the only thing left for Chris Matthews to do, is to start playing with the steel balls in plain view of the camera and start speculating about who stole the strawberries. Every week that goes by it is more apparent that he like Al Gore is a victim of the early onset of the same mental disease which has struck down Cronkite, Carter, Moyers and Garrison Kiellor. Every night he appears on the deck with his harpoon and peg leg muttering about Moby Dick Cheney. His show is a farce and farce is comedy and not worthy of our time.
