How much more evidence do we need that the "War on Drugs" is a complete and total failure?

Yes, evil is lucrative, therefore...IT SHOULD BE LEGAL!

Local marijuana growers, he says, are the tentacles of international drug-trafficking organizations that bring weapons, violence and a slew of other drugs into the market.

...and America will lose a lot of productive citizens and lose its standing as the world's top civilization.  The Netherlands did what you suggest and they haven't gone anywhere since the 1800s.  (No, legalizing drugs didn't cause that, but since they have, have they gone, well, anywhere?)

"Socialism is the philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy."  -Sir Winston Churchill, British statesman (1874-1965)

Some of the people I talk to

Some of the people I talk to in the Netherworlds like it that way.  They like the fact that they have legalized just about any type of behaviour.  Now they tell me it is illegal to say the Hollocaust never happened or to spout off hate speech and I dutifully ask them what is hate speech.  They point to my rants against homosexuals having special rights and my obvious "hatred" for them when I say that it is a sin and they will go to hell.  Ohh I am just hateful, and then they go on to say hateful things about me and Christians, go figure.

LOL the y especially call me hateful when I argue why stop at legalizing homosexual marraiges and we should legalize 3 or more to marry and then perhaps we can legalize pedephelia.  Thats when they become unhinged and start getting ballistic.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark. -- save my gun, shoot a liberal.

Jail apparently makes citiz

Jail apparently makes citizens "productive" in your eyes, even though in mine it seems to cost tax money, but I'm curious...Why no accusations about this Dave R. character? Don't you suspect he just wants to go get high on some illegal drug or another like, say, this old reprobate? Can't you read his mind just like mine? Or has my incessant ridicule actually-changed your argument-style when it comes to the tax and spend drugwar? :) If so, good going , Grasshopper!
JMR

Ego. Drugs. Murder. Anarchy.

I see your ego has swollen to enormous heights and widths as usual.  How can anyone breathe in FL as big as it is?  Guess what?  That element is VERY MUCH prevalent in the drug legalization movement; you can deny it all you want, both you and Dave R 'till you are both blue in the face, but that accusation rests on a solid foundation of personal experiences and observations.  Do you think that with all the time I have spent on college campuses that I have not seen at least ONE pro-drug rally?

See, sarc, I think you are less a Libertarian than a borderline anarchist.  You can think I am here to ruin your (and everyone elses) good time all you want, but the only thing I ask for in this world is that the nation I live in, the United States of America, always remain on the cutting edge of civilization.  Making drugs legal and telling people "Hey!  It's totally 100% okay to not do a thing with your lives except get high and do whatever!" is not the path to go.  I do not think it is too much to ask for people to enter other professions that will earn them a decent, legal, nondestructive living and using jail as a deterrent that unfortunately we have to use.

You propose we legalize drug use to free up jail space.  Why not legalize murder?  We have way too many people on this overpopulated planet, the Left would argue, and I am sure if I thought of it long enough, I could come up with some more pretty convincing arguments to legalize the practice.  For the good of the planet, sarc!!!  And people are just going to kill each other anyway.  Why waste good tax money on keeping people from doing what they want to do anyway?  Think of all the tax money we'll save by getting rid of crime labs, maximum security prisons, and we can lay off law enforcement!  There is serious potential there!

"Socialism is the philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy."  -Sir Winston Churchill, British statesman (1874-1965)

"Hey! It's totally 10

"Hey! It's totally 100% okay to not do a thing with your lives except get high and do whatever!"

When did I ever say that?? Or are you back to trying to put words into my mouth again (it worked SO well for you before!). As for egos, competing with yours sure ain't easy, and facts sure don't deter arguments when the other side gets to make-up statements like you just did, but everyone here can see through your arguments. I don't think you're a conservative, I think you want giant, nanny state government, and the proof is right here in your arguments defending the failed, racist (yep, again, guess what color the innocent Atlanta grandma who got bullets into three separate goblins was!?) tax and spend drugwar. As I keep saying, what is needed is to put violent people like Jessica Lunsford's rapist/killer in cages, but that can't be done when the cages are occupied due to a holy tax and spend drugwar's mandatory minimums. Like it or not, an earlier end to the failed drugwar would have saved Jessica, and you've never seen me advocate less punishment for ANY violent crime and you know it. I'm tougher on violent crime than ANY conservative here, including you.
JMR

If you were tougher on violen

If you were tougher on violent crime than I was, you would prefer to see Jessica's killer broiled in The Chair, but since you would rather be a sick excuse of a human being and use her murder as a way to pursue your political agenda (ironically, just like the gun control advocates you detest do), you won't ever say that.  And whether you like it or not, I really don't care if you don't use drugs or not (even though for someone who doesn't use them you deeply neurotically obsess about them for some reason), your position is a way of saying that you don't care about the position of the United States as the world's premiere, cutting edge civilization and that you WANT to see people check out of society and burn themselves out.  But then, the idea of consequences for your actions is as repulsive to you as it is to a Leftist.

BTW, Merry Christmas to all!

On the iPOD and iTUNES

As far as I know (other posters feel free to correct me on this!), iTunes is the only way to download music to the iPOD from the Net.  HOWEVER, if you have copied CDs to Windows MediaPlayer (as in my case), when you load the iTunes software for your iPOD, it will copy whatever you have copied from your CDs to MediaPlayer to the iPOD.  This is in fact how most of the music on mine has found its way onto my iPOD.  (I love that thing.  I was panicky over the summer when electronics were not being permitted on U.S. bound flights, but fortunately, that ban was lifted in time for my transpacific flight from Korea to Atlanta - a killer flight, let me assure you!  But, since I had my iPOD, and a battery pack that boosted its power to last another 20+ hours, I was very well entertained.)  I recommend it highly.

As much as it pains me to take the side of the ACLU in anything, I support Mr. Johnson in his effort.  There is no reason for him to be punished for what he said.  The problem here is over-zealous government school employees, who because of zero tolerance, and other mindless policies, are unable to think and make rational decisions for themselves.

An email I received from a friend last week highlights this very problem:

> This is Progress?...

> Scenario: Jack pulls into school parking lot with rifle in gun rack.

>  1973 - Vice Principal comes over, takes a look at Jack's rifle, goes to his car and gets his to show Jack.

> 2006 - School goes into lockdown, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers.

> Scenario: Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school.

> 1973 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up b est friends. Nobody goes to jail, nobody arrested, nobody expelled.

> 2006 - Police called, SWAT team arrives, arrests Johnny and Mark. Charge them with assault, both expelled even though Johnny started it.

> Scenario: Jeffrey won't be still in class, disrupts other students.

> 1973 - Jeffrey sent to office and given a good paddling by Principal. Sits still in class.

> 2006 - Jeffrey given huge doses of Ritalin. Becomes a zombie. School gets extra money from state because Jeffrey has a disability.

ACLU files class action lawsuit against state school system and Pedro's English teacher. English banned from core curriculum. Pedro given diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he can't speak English.

True story, my son was placed

True story, my son was placed in school detention for having instruction for building a Bic pen based bb gun.  These were instructions that he got over the internet.  The thing that gets me is that I explained to the assistant principle that I could find all sorts of banned instructions in the school library.  I’m sure I could get some gunpowder recipes or some such.  I bet there are experiments in the science books that would be deemed dangerous also.

He is a troublemaker and has a rep for being so, but it’s not like he had a bic pen bb gun, not that it would hurt, but that he was suspended merely for having instructions on building one.  I wanted to take that one to higher authorities but my son said it would be more trouble for him so I did not.  Wish I had though.

The news media, unfortunate

The news media, unfortunately for their cause, often runs into facts which contradict their follies. Some of their recent stories;

  • 50 plus new species of animals were discovered somewhere.
  • Trans fats in margarine make butter the recommended food
  • Safety problems with small vehicles prompt endorsements towards SUVs and pick-ups

Consider all of the areas our courts are now involved in the above, let's say SUVs. How long have the manufactures been sued for better mileage? The point is we are losing conservative seats on the circuits and it's difficult to imagine laws being created justified on political reasoning. Butter has always been better. Extinction is a fallacy of which land ownership should not be denied. And smaller more fuel efficient cars are killing people. Who is responsible for those who have died?

I just received this via email and thought I would share it with you.  Don't know who wrote it, but the AP states uncategorically, that it was Jamil Hussein:

I thought you would enjoy this little blurb of nonfiction!

Many will recall that on July 8, 1947, witnesses claimed that an unidentified object with five aliens aboard crashed onto a sheep and cattle ranch just outside Roswell , New Mexico .   This is a well-known incident that many say has long been covered up by the U.S. Air Force and the federal government. However, you may NOT know that in the month of March 1948, exactly nine months after that historic day, Albert Arnold Gore, Jr., Hillary Rodham, John F. Kerry, William Jefferson Clinton, Howard Dean, Nancy Pelosi, Dianne Feinstein, Charles E. Schumer, and Barbara Boxer were born.  See what happens when aliens breed with sheep.

This piece of information may clear up a lot of things.

By him not having any coverage of his interaction (or lack of) while he's there makes it all the more easier for him to come back and claim that he was greeted warmly and that "off the record" many, many of the troops said they understood what his botched joke was all about and they also expressed dismay and pessimism about their mission in Iraq.

The Timeless Wisdom of Milton Friedman

We noted last issue the passing of the great libertarian economist Milton Friedman. Economist Mark J. Perry posted a collection of his favorite Friedman quotes at his "Carpe Diem" blog, and they're so delicious we wanted to share them.

1. There is nothing as permanent as a temporary government program.

2. Inflation is always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon.

3. Inflation is caused by too much money chasing after too few goods.

4. Sloppy writing reflects sloppy thinking.

5. All learning is ultimately self-learning.

6. I'm in favor of legalizing drugs. According to my values system, if people want to kill themselves, they have every right to do so. Most of the harm that comes from drugs is because they are illegal.

7. Nobody spends somebody else's money as carefully as he spends his own. Nobody uses somebody else's resources as carefully as he uses his own. So if you want efficiency and effectiveness, if you want knowledge to be properly utilized, you have to do it through the means of private property.

8. The government solution to a problem is usually as bad as the problem.

9. The Great Depression, like most other periods of severe unemployment, was produced by government mismanagement rather than by any inherent instability of the private economy.

10. The high rate of unemployment among teenagers, and especially black teenagers, is both a scandal and a serious source of social unrest. Yet it is largely a result of minimum wage laws. We regard the minimum wage law as one of the most, if not the most, antiblack laws on the statute books.

11. Industrial progress, mechanical improvement, all of the great wonders of the modern era have meant relatively little to the wealthy. The rich in Ancient Greece would have benefited hardly at all from modern plumbing: running servants replaced running water. Television and radio? The Patricians of Rome could enjoy the leading musicians and actors in their home, could have the leading actors as domestic retainers. Ready-to-wear clothing, supermarkets -- all these and many other modern developments would have added little to their life. The great achievements of Western Capitalism have redounded primarily to the benefit of the ordinary person. These achievements have made available to the masses conveniences and amenities that were previously the exclusive prerogative of the rich and powerful.

12. President Kennedy said, "Ask not what your country can do for you -- ask what you can do for your country."... Neither half of that statement expresses a relation between the citizen and his government that is worthy of the ideals of free men in a free society. "What your country can do for you" implies that the government is the patron, the citizen the ward. "What you can do for your country" assumes that the government is the master, the citizen the servant.

13. On the difference between public vs. private education: "Try talking French with someone who studied it in public school. Then with a Berlitz graduate."

-- Milton Friedman, 1912-2006.

Friedman was the real deal.  Too bad he's gone.

Thanks. I'm a big fan of #1

Thanks. I'm a big fan of #12, I don't think Mr. Kennedy could have gotten away with such a statement with blogs around, but the news media sure were good at ignoring Friedman when he was making-sense on a variety of subjects! I'm sad that I never got to meet him, as I've always been humbled by his intellect and good-humor and it would have been nice to tell him that in-person.

Dave, I have to disagree with

Dave, I have to disagree with # 6.  If some fool wants to kill him/herself by using drugs, and they have the right to kill themselves, why not just stand them in front of a wall and shoot them?  Help him/her achieve his/her goal quicker, at less cost to society.  We don't have to pay for the lives they've ruined by their actions while drugged.  In the meantime, I don't want my architect, lawyer, doctor, cop, pilot, transportation worker, etc., to attempt to perform their jobs while high.
