Washington Post movie critic Stephen Hunter (not a role model for the Politically Correct Movie Critic) cracks today that Will Smith's new movie "The Pursuit of Happyness" unfolds like a lecture from your "old man" about working hard to achieve your dreams.
Hunter calls it "a radically conservative encomium to trying hard, to capitalism, to salesmanship, to Dean Witter, to never saying die, and to reaping the big reward." I don't get what's so "radically conservative" or capitalistic about working hard to achieve. (Don't socialists work hard to achieve their socialistic goals? Hillary?) It sounds to me more like "I can't believe Hollywood made a positive film about a black man in a Dean Witter office."
Oh, and he likes the acting chops of Will Smith's little boy.

Working Hard
December 15, 2006 - 12:10 ET by EllisWyattEvery now and then, we get a remarkable insight into the minds of our opponents. This is one of those times.
Wow, where to begin? There's so much in his column.
"Get along with your boss. He's your boss because he's earned it. What a crock."
<Begin Sarcasm>
Yes, what a crock! Everyone in a management position is just another example of the "Peter Principle". It's all about ass kissing and / or sleeping your way to the top.
<End Sarcasm>
"There's no doubt that Chris is filled with rage at the unfairness of it all, that he yearns to blame all his problems on the various larger contexts that all go unstated in the movie."
Steven, there are many people who can experience setbacks in their lives without raging against society, the government or whoever. I know this is a foreign concept to journalists like yourself, but it really does happen.
"Instead, we are aware always that he's right on the edge of breaking down, that he has a mean temper, that he suppresses his "real" self in order to become a "business" self that all the white folks will like, employing that most loathed of all old-fashioned virtues, repression."
You think that white people don't adopt a different personality for the workplace? Everyone makes adjustments for their career. That's not "repression", it's "socialization". Something that's becoming a lost art in today's PC society. And since when is "repression" a virtue?
"You could say: It's all a bunch of bull. After all, Chris Gardner was clearly an extremely gifted man with a need to succeed deep and pure. Maybe that's true, and maybe in your case, it's hopeless, because you lack those gifts."
That's what you say, but it's not what I say.
It's "radically conservative"
December 15, 2006 - 12:15 ET by Mean Gene Dr. LoveIt's "radically conservative" because it is a true story about how a [black] man (Chris Gardner) was determined to work hard and work himself out of homelessness and poverty by persistence and hard work resulting in making himself independently wealthy. This is the story of fulfilling the American dream and it is exactly what Thomas Jefferson (and other Founders)meant when he penned "the pursuit of happiness" in the Declaration of Independence...not to surprising the movie is titled similarly.
How dare Hollywood make a movie like this! This type of thing shakes the very foundations of the Liberal/Socialistic agenda. The Left cannot have people believeing they don't need government hand-outs. I could be wrong, but I don't believe anyone has become a millionaire (legally) by relying on hand-outs from a nanny state.
I hope this movie does well and I hope it inspires many people that feel there is little hope to get out and make things happen for themselves.

I think we are missing the point of "radically conservative", anything "conservative" in the eyes of Hollyweird is bad. Heaven forbid that any man or woman make it without the help of the government, why that is just not right!

December 15, 2006 - 12:26 ET by Clear thinkerScrew the liberals and their socialist views. I for one am glad this movie was made and I'm also glad to see Will Smith get the lead. I have always been something of a fan of Smith because he is one of the few Hollywood elite that did not "make it" by using foul language in his music or his movies. For the most part you can have your kids watch his old sit-com or his movies without parental interference. This is one movie that I will be taking my granddaughter to!

December 15, 2006 - 12:46 ET by Dave RThe last thing the liberals want is for any member of a minority group to make it on their own, as this would represent independence from government, and that can simply not be tolerated.

Well, there was I, Robot.
Still, I wasn't sure about seeing this movie, just because I'm tired of all the "feel-good" sugary hollywood/disney crap that substitutes for movies these days (shouldn't they have dentists on standby at the theatre?).
Although.... now that I've read this guy's review, I think I will have to see it.
I, Robot
December 16, 2006 - 09:52 ET by Guy Arthur ThomasSmith is likeable in some features but I, Robot was a rather lousy, cheesy and disappointing acting job by Smith. His range is pleasantly beyond the average Hollywood-be and hopefully he will move away from the clown acts, but obviously the MIB's were money makers and I doubt Smith is in it just for the art so I can't say that I blame him on those occassions.
If you claim to be a conservative, please don't disgrace yourself and conservatism by thinking and arguing like a liberal.

December 15, 2006 - 13:44 ET by Chris NormanAnyone wanna bet that, sooner or later, the star, the director, or the producer of this movie (or even all three) will feel the need to release a statement saying, in effect, heaven forbid, it wasn't their intention or suggestion that there is no need or substititute for government programs to help the poor or minorities succeed?

It's Friday, so movie review
December 15, 2006 - 14:55 ET by saw the lightIt's Friday, so movie review time. I was interested in what the St. Louis Post-Dispatch would say about this movie. I heard a pretty good review on the local news radio yesterday. The reviewer was someone named Calvin Wilson.
First there was this: "...Smith downplays his usual freewheeling charisma, opting instead for a borderline-scary blend of earnestness and spunk."
So if you want something bad enough and are energetic about it, it's borderline scary? But this was tame compared to what followed.
"Their performances go a long way toward undercutting the annoying message that success is just a matter of wanting it bad enough. That would be a spectacularly simple-minded sentiment, even if the film weren't set during the era of trickle-down economics."
The liberal mindset pervades the rag, considering the glowing review Fahrenheit 9-11 got. Anybody got a conservative paper they want to trade?

December 16, 2006 - 11:55 ET by UnsaneI think the better question is "does anybody have a conservative paper"?
But, cheer up! You should know the rule about movie reviews. The Post-Dispatch clearly hates it, so that's your signal that it is a great movie and that you need to see it. We here in San Antonio are saddled with our own film critics who, well, hate every movie ever made since about 1960 that is not in French, so any time they blast a new release, I take it as an endorsement.

Calling an American success
December 15, 2006 - 16:44 ET by robert108Calling an American success story "radically conservative" tells you all you need to know about the lefties, and who and what they really support. The lefties and the Dem party on the national level no longer support American values. They are the Party of European Socialism, or worse. They despise all things American, especially individual success. Their ideology would prohibit individual independence in any form, and Wil Smith's character would be an Enemy of the State.
