L.A. Times Forwards Pelosi As 'Devout Catholic, American Everywoman'

The Baltimore Sun wasn’t alone in promoting Nancy Pelosi, not even among its fellow newspapers in the Tribune publishing group. On Monday, in a story headlined "Pelosi Piques Public's Interest," Los Angeles Times reporter Faye Fiore portrayed Pelosi as an object of public fascination:

As Pelosi prepares to be sworn in Jan. 4 as the first female speaker of the House, she has become an object of fascination and curiosity in political circles and beyond. Barbara Walters interviewed her as one of the year's 10 most fascinating people. People magazine has written about her twice in recent weeks. An article in a Palm Springs newspaper ran with the headline: "How To Get the Nancy Pelosi Look." (Answer: an Armani suit.)

Only weeks ago, Republicans were doing their best in the heat of the campaign to paint Pelosi, 66, as a conservative's nightmare — a San Francisco liberal out of touch with the American mainstream. But more recently, a poll measuring political charisma showed that she had "dramatically improved her standing" with the public, sponsors of the survey said, with voters knowing her better and feeling warmer toward her.

Fiore also claimed that Pelosi’s "events in the first week of January will try to plant Pelosi's version of her life story in the national consciousness, showing her as an Italian American and devout Catholic from Baltimore." Fiore calls Pelosi’s swearing-in an "inauguration" (she ran for president) and a test: "The impending inauguration kicks off the contest over who will define Nancy Pelosi: Republicans who see her as a reckless liberal, or Pelosi herself, who wants to be seen as an American Everywoman, leading her party on a steady course to the center."

Then, look who arrives in the story, but liberal Kathleen Hall Jamieson:

"She is trying to dispatch the stereotype put forth by Republicans," said Kathleen Hall Jamieson, director of the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania. "The advantage she has is the country didn't know her before. Her challenge will be to take votes cast against Republicans and the war in Iraq and transform them into votes for the Democratic Party in 2008."

Fiore added:

Four months ago, Pelosi barely registered on the name recognition scale, which served her well at the time; GOP attempts to demonize her fell flat because few knew who she was.

Now many more do.

"This is a dangerous time in terms of public reception. She has the newsworthiness but not the power," said former Democratic strategist Paul Begala.

Predictably, there was no conservative or Republican in the piece to disagree. As for the "American Everywoman" stance, does every American woman have a $6,000 Tahitian pearl necklace? See the article's beginning and end for more.

Pelosi

If Pelosi were truly the "American Everywoman," most men in the country would turn as gay as San Francisco.  Who's more insufferable: Pelosi or Hillary?  Man, that's a Godzilla vs King Kong battle right there buddy.

Catholic

Pelosi is pro-choice. How then is she a "devout" Catholic? Liberals are ignorant and illogical.

NEVER,NEVER trust a liberal

Devout Catholic

A pro-abortion devout Catholic. Sort of like an Orthodox Jew who eats pork.

Yup ...

Everyone has beat me to it. I had the same comment. "Pro-choice" and "devout Catholic" is an oxymoron.

Frankenlies.com: Al Franken debunked ...

I guess she is a "devout

I guess she is a "devout" virgin also.

Educational background

She was educated by the Sisters of Notre Dame. Why don't they interview them to see what they think about Pelosi's devotion to Catholicism?

Now that wouldn't quite fit the template, would it?

This just further emphasizes the differences between the two ideologies.   To a conservative, actions are greater than words.  To a liberal, words are greater than actions.

- Even though we hate America and the military (by our actions), we are patriots, devout patriots (by our words).

- Even though you slaughtered a family of 7, you say you are sorry, so you should be pardoned.

- Even though we champion the slaughter of babies, we believe in the sanctity of life.

- Even though our president gets serviced by interns his daughters age, we believe that any relationship between a male boss and a female subordinate is by rule, sexual harrassment.

- Even though we are intolerant of everyone who disagrees with us, we are the party of tolerance.

- Even though we won't allow the appointment of a Supreme court justice who doesn't believe in the sacrament of abortion, we are against a litmus test for judiciary appointments.

"Devout Catholic"?? I think

"Devout Catholic"?? I think the Pope is about to blow lunch.

Why do they call him Wolf? He looks like a Weasel to me.

I was thinking the same thing

I was thinking the same thing.  I don't understand how one's politics can fly in the face of a Church's doctrine, and yet that person is devout.  This has been one of those phenomena the Northeast libs have struggled with for over 50 years.  They are fierecly reluctant to leave the RCC, despite the fact that they are opposed to some of the basic policies of the Vatican.  So, they separate their belief set into personal and official; for example, one can be pro-choice politically while prolclaiming that she would never have an abortion herself (or in the case of the male, he would never recommend an abortion to anyone).

Now, I'm not one who puts religious labels on people; as far as I'm concnerned, an individual's faith (or absence of faith) is his/her personal business.  But when they publicize their faith in order to foster their image, it becomes fair game.  An describing oneself as devout when one openly and politically opposes that faith's doctrine, makes the definition of the word meanlingless.

Galvanic Nancy Pelosi

Galv  Nancy Pelosi

Your point is well taken. It is absolute hypocrisy to be promoted as an RC and stand for abortion.

You seem to have a deep understanding of the moral psyche of Northeasterners. Boston is largely Catholic..most seem to quickly accept abortion. As to homosexual behavior, they seem to encourage it. I am far from the most devout Catholic that one could meet, but I try to live by the rules of the chruch. Abortion is murder, homosexuality is an aberration. I do not condemn homosexuals. I do not know if it is choice or by birth. I wish them well and hope they have a happy life. That being said, I am opposed to same sex couples adopting or using other methods to have a family. And lastly, yes, the Northeasterners do very much seem to be opposed to the Vatican. Most of them hide it behind sexual abuse by priests. The truth is, they do not truly believe in God anymore.

Well said, Galvanic. Bein

Well said, Galvanic.

Being a Catholic means subscribing to and accepting certain tenets of faith and morals. If you don't agree with and live by the rules of the Catholic Church, you can say you go to the Catholic Church on Sundays, but you are not Catholic.

It reminds me of that stupid Outback Restaurant commercial where the geek says "I'm not a STRICT vegetarian, I mean I eat beef, and pork, and chicken....I'm sort of a SEMI-vegetarian.

And I can't wait for the real Pelosi to start coming out.  Then we'll really know who she is!  God help us all.

Apparently the Pope has a lot

Apparently the Pope has a lot of things to "blow lunch" over.  Here is a quote from  Pope Benedict XVI (formerly Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger) from a news conference May 2, 2003.

"There were not sufficient reasons to unleash a war against Iraq."

And? Even under canon law, th

And? Even under canon law, the pope only speaks infallably in issues of faith. And when in conjunction with the college of cardinals.

Iraq is not an issue of faith. People can differ.

Seems some people want to listen to the pope, when they want to. Yet ignore him, and call him names when he's inconvenient. Like Pelosi.

"Whoever undertakes to set himself up as a judge of truth and knowledge is shipwrecked by the laughter of the gods."  Albert Einstein

Pope speaking out

The Pope is only infalliable on matters of faith when he speaks "ex cathedra" from the chair. If he is out having lunch with the President and speaks on matters of faith he can be just as fallible as the rest of us.

Our real problem, then, is not our strength today; it is rather the vital necessity of action today to ensure our strength tomorrow. Dwight Eisenhower

If it were one isolated story, some may have bought it, but with several similar stories on different Dems getting religion all of a sudden, it least has to raise doubts of the authenticity.

With Catholics like Pelosi, Kerry & Kennedy . . .

As a "devout Catholic" who is pro-life I find Pelosi's "American Everywoman" sickening.  I wish the Pope would come out and tell these "devout Catholics who are Pro-Choice" to join some other church because they are now ex-communicated.  I know the former Archbishop of DC threatened to withhold Communion from people like this.  I wasn't able to be married in the Church because my husband was previously married & we have not pursued an annullment.  I don't go to Communion because I'm not supposed to.  But these fools, well that's another story.

Pelosi, by her public stateme

Pelosi, by her public statements and actions, has incurred automatic self-excommunication from the Roman Catholic Church. She is "objectively" in a state of mortal sin and risks the damnation of her eternal soul.  By publicly supporting, and voting for laws allowing, abortion, homosexual marriage, contraception, easy-divorce, and "sex education" for school kids that is nothing more than soft pornography, Pelosi has condemned herself.  Sadly, so have mostly all the so-called Catholics in the U.S. Congress. These issues are not merely private religious beliefs----they conform with the Natural Law, which is God's law inscribed in every person's conscience. The best thing to do is to pray for Pelosi that she might repent, confess, and return to the Chruch, as we should pray for all our public leaders---those who are lost in in amoral wilderness and those who are trying to do the right thing, for all authority, whether people want to recognize it or not, comes from God.  All authority comes from God.
