CNN Reporter: Helpful Democrats Will Give You More Time Off Work!

Photo of Scott Whitlock.

Monday’s edition of "American Morning" featured a decidedly one sided segment that advocated for Democratic legislation, generously highlighted Ted Kennedy and promoted San Francisco as the wave of the future. Correspondent Alina Cho used the piece to boost a bill that would require employers with more than 15 workers to give seven sick days a year. Disparaging America’s primitive stance on the issue, she noted that "139 countries provide paid sick leave for workers. The U.S. is the only industrialized nation that does not pay." Cho almost entirely ignored opposition to this plan. Her segment also highlighted a supposed victim of this problem who is actually on the board of directors of a group that lobbies for similar laws. (Somehow, this didn't come up.) The entire story sounded like something taken straight from a DNC press release:

Alina Cho: "...For many Americans, taking a sick day is not a big deal. You take it for granted. But by most estimates, more than half of all Americans who work in the private sector do not get a single day of paid sick leave. Not a single day. Well, all of that could change now that the Democrats are about to take control of Congress. And for some families, it could make all the difference. Rachel Sobel, mother of two, quit her job last December when she was forced to make a choice: her job or her son. Leo had broken his arm and needed her care."

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Well, who is Rachel Sobel? She’s on the board of directors for ParentsWork, an Illinois based organization that, according to their website, has the following goals:

"By connecting parents with information and tools to take action, our hope is that ParentsWork can give us the strength in numbers that we need to get business leaders and elected officials to listen to our concerns and do something about them. So, join us and become part of a growing movement of Illinois parents who want to create a better future for our children and grandchildren."

CNN and Ms. Cho apparently couldn’t find the time to mention this salient point. Later in the piece, which aired at 7:16am, the reporter simply stated that Sobel "now has a part-time job which affords her more time with her kids but less money." The viewer is left with the impression that this is just a regular, ordinary mother with no particular agenda.

"American Morning" hosts Soledad O’Brien and Miles O’Brien both promoted the legislation earlier in the program. In a 7AM tease, Ms. O’Brien helpfully added the following insight:

Soledad O’Brien: "This morning, how the power shift in Washington could make it easier for you to call in sick and still get paid."

A few minutes later, Miles O’Brien introduced Cho and continued the "helpful Democrats" theme:

Miles O’Brien: "Well, I wonder how you feel this morning? You might wish you could just call in sick and roll over, but you can't because you'd lose a day's pay. Well, You may be getting some relief soon. Some members of Congress have the prescription for new legislation that could give you a break."

In her segment, Cho cited a city and a person in order to promote the legislation: San Francisco and Ted Kennedy. Somehow, the word "liberal" wasn’t applied to either:

Cho: "Next month, Senator Ted Kennedy will reintroduce a bill that would require companies with 15 or more employees to provide full-time workers seven days of paid sick leave a year."

Ted Kennedy: "It’s good enough for the members of Congress, good enough for the Senate, the House of Representatives. It's good enough for hard-working people."

Cho: "It’s already good enough for San Francisco. The city recently approved a similar measure, the first in the nation to do so. Kennedy says it should be federal policy."

The CNN correspondent mostly ignored or downplayed the economic impact this bill would have. The report, almost four minutes in length, included only a five second clip of opposition to the legislation, and note that it included a plea for more taxes:

Cho: "Business leaders say if paid sick leave is that important, Congress should raise taxes to pay for it."

Randel Johnson (U.S. Chamber of Commerce): "People get sick, need time off, why should the employer necessarily have to pay for that burden?"

After that, Cho shifted right back into enthusiastic cheerleader mode, bashing America for not living up to other, more enlightened countries:

Cho: "Now, business leaders who are against paid sick leave say employers simply can't afford to pay for it. But people like Rachel Sopel say in the long run, and this makes sense, if the person goes into work sick and gets everyone else sick, it will hurt businesses, especially productivity, even more. Interesting to note, 139 countries provide paid sick leave for workers. The U.S. is the only industrialized nation that does not pay. And Miles, Senator Kennedy says next to minimum wage, paid sick leave is the most important issue facing American workers here."

Advocating that America embrace the policies of socialist countries isn’t a new angle. On October 5, 2005, Brent Baker noted that both ABC and NBC were promoting an embrace of European legislation:

"ABC and NBC turned a study, on how children are better off cared for by mothers at home instead of in daycare, into a chance to promote European socialistic paid leave benefits."

Katie Couric, then a host of "Today," made her feelings clear. She wondered, "This country is pretty far behind in providing really superior childcare for working parents, right?" Now that the Democrats are writing bills, America can probably expect more "independent" experts and profiles of all sorts of exciting new legislation.

A transcript of the December 11 "American Morning" report follows:

7:00

Soledad O’Brien: "This morning, how the power shift in Washington could make it easier for you to call in sick and still get paid."

7:16

Miles O’Brien: "Well, I wonder how you feel this morning? You might wish you could just call in sick and roll over, but you can't because you'd lose a day's pay. Well, You may be getting some relief soon. Some members of Congress have the prescription for new legislation that could give you a break. ‘American Morning’s’ Alina Cho is feeling well, I hope."

Alina Cho: "I am. Miles, good morning to you."

O’Brien: "Good to have you."

Cho: "Thank you. You know, for many Americans, taking a sick day is not a big deal.

Rachel Sobel: " I had to be home with him."

Cho: "But she couldn’t. She already used her payed time off, which included only two sick days, so she quit to care for her son. It's a dilemma lots of Americans face. Nearly half of all workers in the private sector don't get any paid sick time. And lower-wage workers are the hardest hit. With Democrats about to take control of Congress, they're vowing to fight for a change."

Ted Kennedy: "I, quite frankly, am tired of playing defense. I think it's time that we played offense."

Cho: "Next month, Senator Ted Kennedy will reintroduce a bill that would require companies with 15 or more employees to provide full-time workers seven days of paid sick leave a year."

Kennedy: "It’s good enough for the members of Congress, good enough for the Senate, the House of Representatives, it's good enough for hard-working people."

Cho: "It’s already good enough for San Francisco. The city recently approved a similar measure, the first in the nation to do so. Kennedy says it should be federal policy. Business leaders say if paid sick leave is that important, Congress should raise taxes to pay for it."

Randel Johnson (U.S. Chamber of Commerce): "People get sick, need time off, why should the employer necessarily have to pay for that burden?"

Cho: "Rachel now has a part-time job which affords her more time with her kids but less money. What she really wants is a full time job that allows her enough time off to take care of her kids when they’re sick and get paid at the same time."

Sobel: "It's really all-American workers who deserve this."

Miles O’Brien: "Now, the system we have here, we really don’t have sick days. We have PTO, paid time off."

Cho: "Right."

Miles O’Brien: "It all kind of gets lumped into vacation."

Cho: "That's right. So, you might get 30 days total for the year, vacation, personal days, sick days. And it's a trend. A lot more companies are doing things this way. And proponents of this policy say it's a good idea because, listen, if you have a family and you need to take sick days, you can take sick days. Work if you don't and you want to take more vacation, you can do that. And they say it actually discourages people from taking sick days, unless they’re absolutely sick and need to take a sick day. And it's a trend that's caught on."

O’Brien: "Of course, it might cause them to come in sick and get everyone sick, which is--"

Cho: "Right. That’s the other side of it."

Soledad O’Brien: "But that woman, her son broke her arm. She just wasn’t going to spread germs, she just wanted to be able to help him."

Cho: "That’s right. And she had to quit as a result."

It is documented here everyda

It is documented here everyday that the media is biased and pro-Democrat.  It should be no surprise that they advocate a policy of the Democrats that gives you more free stuff if you continue to elect them - because make no mistake, that is all this policy amounts to.  It just continues our ride down the path of the age-old, predicted downfall of a society who can vote itself money.  Shame on those who author, advocate, or in any way foster this sort of immoral policy.

A great quote from the reporter (CQ National Security Editor Jeff Stein) about Reyes' lack of knowledge sums it up:

"If you're the baseball commissioner and you don't know the difference between the Yankees and the Red Sox, you don't know baseball," Stein said. "You're not going to have the respect of the people you work with."

Yeah, I saw that piece on R

Yeah, I saw that piece on Reyes, too. Sunni, Shiite, whatever. If you don't know, just guess, I guess. Put down the shovel, man. Sheesh, he's really going to be a "player" on that committee...

Actually, if a company choose

Actually, if a company chooses not to have sick pay benefits, you have a choice not to work for them and you also have a choice to purchase short term disability.  The market, not the government should determine employee compensation packages.  After all, it's the businesses of this country that provide the majority of employment not the government.  Also note that employers like the government who offer liberal amounts of sick pay do not pay as well, it's a trade off.  The net result of any government mandate on sick pay will depress take home pay to offset the mandate which means smaller pay raises in the future to compensate for absenteeism.  Remember it's not a benefit for the majority of employees who come to work everyday, it's a benefit for those who won't work to draw the same pay.

I also would like to take issue with this notion that all employers must be somehow "forced" to show compassion to their employees, in this lady's case we are not told if she had a high absenteeism rate to cause her employer to confront her with a choice.  Few if any employers I have ever known would begrudge someone taking a day off sick for themselves or to take care of their child, by the same token few if any employers will tolerate a habitual absentee employee, there is no point of having a person on the payroll if they make every excuse under the sun why they shouldn't be at work.  It's not only disruptive to customer service but also to the fellow employees who are forced to do someone else's work and their own.  But that's Socialism for you, making those who can work, work more for those who won't work.

“The object of life is not to be on the side of the majority but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane.” – Marcus Aurelius

You make a good point!  I ca

You make a good point!  I can't remember any employer I've had that wouldn't be willing to jump through hoops to help out a valued employee during a family emergency.  The key word though is "valued", which apparently she wasn't.  These days most employers are understaffed due to the inability to find qualified employees, and they're offering substantial benefit packages and things like flexible working hours to keep workers.  If her company gave her the boot, it's probably because of other issues... which you'll never hear about from her.

CHO made a choice when she squandered her PTO

If we can assume that she was getting 30 days of paid time off per year, and she didn't have the time to take when her kid got hurt, then what does that say about her? She failed to manage her PTO for the year: she went through six weeks of PTO. If she had budgeted her time a little better, she could have taken some time off to be with her kid. Instead, she whines about "being forced to make a choice". She made a choice to begin with: she took all of her time and left nothing in the bank. Who's fault is that?

This proves that Liberals don

This proves that Liberals don't care about the poor--well, actually they do care about them, they want them to have food, clothing, shelter and a few goodies, like MP3 players etc.---, but they don't want them to achieve a state of financial independence.  Liberals want to keep the poor dependent upon them.  That's where they derive their status and power.

SO, they want to give us more time off, which makes the cost of labor go up, and makes prices go up and tightens up the job market, causing higher unemployment and greater dependency.

And who comes to the rescue?  It's not a bird or a plane, it's Entitlement Man!  They'll be happy to buy your vote with a welfare check, but don't you dare try to get off the dole or they'll tax you into oblivion!

The same goes for the minimum wage or any other government mandate that puts the cost of labor at a higher rate than market conditions warrant.

"What she really wants

"What she really wants is a full time job that allows her enough time off to take care of her kids when they’re sick and get paid at the same time.""

Wow, is that ALL she wants, lol? Money for free, what a sweet deal that would be. I think the quote says it all. She wants to get paid at the full-time rate, but she doesn't want to work for it. I wonder how she would feel if her ex-employer expected her to work full-time, but not get paid for it?

The question that needs to be

The question that needs to be asked of Clinton "News" Network is: Where did CNN find Rachel Sobel?  Did CNN contact Ted Kennedy's office or some other lefist kook for a "victim" to display for its propaganda piece?

"Next month, Senator Ted

"Next month, Senator Ted Kennedy will reintroduce a bill that would require companies with 15 or more employees to provide full-time workers seven days of paid sick leave a year."

I wonder where within the wording of Ted's bill will be the exceptions that exclude his companies from this provision.

"Section 719, subparagraph T: If you've ever driven a car off a bridge, or had a brother named Jack who was shot from a facility involving books, you are exempt from having to provide these employee benefits."

with 15 or more employees t

with 15 or more employees to provide full-time workers seven days of paid sick leave a year."

Why stop there. How about a bill giving workers the same "recess" days as the Senate?

I did check and Senators have been in session for a humungous 123 days this year!

Wow!

Economic Illiteracy Aiding the Dems (Wonder Why?!)

The reason why the MSM can get away with this sort of story is because we don't teach basic economic theory in out high screwals. If we taught basic capitalist economic theory wherein the effects of common issues (like taxation)were discussed, they would not be able to appeal to emotion. Due to this lack of education, the MSM can "report" on these types of liberal entitlements with no real fear of backlash from the public. This goes hand in hand with the "story" on the French policies on subsidizing child birth.

Being a member of the V.R.W.C., I think that the NEA is taking orders from the DNC and the MSM on public school curriculum decisions. That's why we have kids learing about diverstiy issues and lmpeaching President Bush in mock trials rather than teaching something that will allow them to see and hear bullS@#$ when they hear it.

WHEN is someone in the administration going to go after the MSM for being nothing more than the propaganda arm of the Democratic Pary? If some on the left can go after some preacher for telling his congregation how to vote, then we on the right should be able to apply McCain-Finegold rules to the MSM.

Interesting to note indeed

"Interesting to note, 139 countries provide paid sick leave for workers, the U.S. is the only industrialized nation that does not pay."

It would be interesting to know how many of those 139 countries receive some form of aid from the US for everything from direct financial payments to Tsunami/Earthquake relief to AIDS spending to relying on the US for their defense.  In a sense that would mean the US in fact does pay.  If those 139 countries would agree, I would be willing to forgo the Trillions in foreign aid the US annually hands out to provide 7 days a year sick leave for American workers.  Maybe when Ted sobers up he can ask those countries.

This reminds me of a couple w

This reminds me of a couple weeks ago when I saw a story on CNN about the dems wanting to raise the minimum wage.  They simply didn't mention any opposing viewpoints like the fact that an arificially high minimum wage will mean a decrease in demand for labor.  Nope, they basically said that democrats are the savior of the poor at the behest of business.  So after hearing that story I had a great idea.  Why not raise the miniumum wage to $200 an hour!  We could eliminate poverty overnight, it's so easy!

Seriously though, idiocy like this from the dems is what gives me faith that their ideology will ultimately fail.  It takes a lot of work to cover up truth like they do and ultimately truth always finds a way of getting out.

I have an even better idea

I have an even better idea than that! Who needs work; let's pay every person in the country $3000/month whether they work or not, plus no landlord can set rent above $1000/month! If you need more for beer and drugs, then you can go out and find a job!

A person could buy a lot of beer for $2,000 a month!

As an addition to your idea, we get the federal government to put in a "alcohol lane" with barriers on both sides of the lane on all roads in the US, this way the millions of people making their third beer run for the day would only kill themselves on the highways.

Actually, I have to defer fro

Actually, I have to defer from the majority opinion here. This is an area where the Democrats can and will actually deliver. The Helpful Democrats will give a lot of Americans more time off. It is just a matter of semantics. Conservatives call it "unemployment", Liberals call it "welcome to the entitlement class".

I a self employed.  i bill $

I a self employed.  i bill $365. per hour.  I would love the government to pass a law giving me 7 paid sick days per year.  Why treat me any different.  I work hard.  I am not rich.  I need time off when I get sick.  Why does no one feel sorry for me?  Can you possibly imagine how it would be inforced?

Maybe Ted could agree to go back and recalculate all the taxes his entire family has avoided over the last 100 years with their trusts and estate planning and agree to pay these back taxes. and interest thereon.  At 46% (the estate tax rate) that would be a very very large some of money.  The money could be used to help fund this new program.

This idea would also be a goo

This idea would also be a good way to feminize males in this country even further. No longer would Dad's across the USA tell their sons "suck it up and get to work" like mine did.

"The U.S. is the only

"The U.S. is the only industrialized nation that does not pay."

And we're #1! Maybe that means something.

Indeed.  The economic impact

Indeed.  The economic impact to the small business sector, the largest employer in the US, would be devastating.  We're not number 1 for nothing.  We have high productivity rates because we work more than 6 months out of a year.  The liberals have been trying to get businesses to adopt the euro-socialist lifestyle (oh, we can't meet your August deadline, we're on holiday that month) for decades because it's more "cosmopolitan" than working "regular" hours.

Our economy grows when taxes are low and the market can support the offered wages.  A robust economy doesn't need minimum wages as the jobs are plentiful and people can move from job to job, increasing their wages and benefits as they go along.  Increase taxes, artificially inflate wages and watch what happens.  Capital shrinks and employers (especially small businesses) are forced to limit expansion and hold on to current employees or jettison extra employees in order to keep the company in the black.  See?  Action...reaction.  Too bad Libs suffer from a static analysis syndrome.

Days Off

Hokie,

You've nailed it.

After that French baby post from yesterday, I did a little snooping.  Not only do the French provide these generous maternity benefits, and the August holiday you refer to above, I found a cite that there are 36 government holidays as well.  Furthermore, the working moms bug out exactly on time to pick up their kids from subsidized day care.

Don't get me wrong....I'm all for appropriate child care and all.  But I'd rather arrange and pay for it myself.

So my question is....when do these people (Euros) actually work?  And why should we emulate them?  Oh, sorry, right, the Nanny State.

Personally, I never, ever take all of my allocated personal days, and I have to work really hard to make sure I take my vacation (looking iffy again this year!!!).

So what does an employer value?  And why do we need the democrats to tell employers what to value?

The 35 hour work week

Don't forget: the French, about 9 years ago, decided the best thing to do in order to alleviate their appalling unemployment rate was to decrease the work week from 38 to 35 hours.

Well, it did virtually nothing to dent the unemployment rate, and if there is ANY talk of moving it back up to 38...or even 36, you know what the French will do.

It is truly amazing to watch

It is truly amazing to watch the MSM as they orgasmically gush about all the wonderful new legislation that they anticipte will come about now that the Dems are back in control.  Unfortunately there are hundreds of thousands, shoot, millions of people who eat this up. And they will do so without having a clue of how this type of policy, and the French policy for paid maternity leave mentioned here in the last couple days, will ultimately depress the economy, creating a dependent society wherein people will have no incentive to extend themselves beyond the government teet.

That damn price tag

In large part, that is because there is ONE damning little thing the media conveniently omits from ALL of their gushing about the European social model: the price tag.

And I guarantee you these are the same people who hate outsourcing.  Well, if these goodies are dished out by the government, they won't have begun to see the BEGINNING of outsourcing.  There are reasons why BMWs are getting built in SC or why Airbuses will be built in AL, after all.

I was a bit peeved at the posting of my comments.  While I am a bit pi$$ed at some of my fellow Republicans, I'm most angry at my party for going soft and NOT holding to conservative ideals.

I frankly do NOT understand the GOP!!  Conservatism wins everytime it's tried, but the GOP is too scared to run on these principles...at least in this last election.

You may be right.  If the GOP won't carry the conservative water, others like the Libertarians will.  And yes, I know Libertarians are not all together conservative.  They can be liberal on many social issues.

But again, those Republicans who chose to stay home in "protest" only helped the Dems.  Nancy, Harry and Chucky really appreciate them ;-)

Sven Pubs

As you have seen on this site, there have been many references to RINOs. We need to remember that the moral code of a large number of Americans today is to get what they personally want, not what is good for America. Among my disappointments in recent years is ex-Congressman Bob Barr of Georgia. When the politicos gerrymandered his district so that it fell into a large Democratic area, he lost his seat in Congress. He changed parties, but at least he didn't sell out. He is now a Libertarian and gets to write columns for the Atlanta newspaper, (which he most probably would not get to do as a Republican).

Oh Sven, do not misunderstand

Oh Sven, do not misunderstand me...I am plenty pissed at the people that stayed home, and pissed that the Libertarians are making head-way within the conservatives which I am! The republicans had better wake up, the real conservatives had better speak up and get people hot to go out and vote for them...I agree with you.!

I want a strong outspoken leader who wants to get the borders sealed, fight the global war on terror as long as it takes, get us out of the UN period, a flat tax that cannot be messed with once passed, abolish the State Dept. These items that affect our lives everyday are enough to start with to win big-time!
