Today's starters:
Pearl Harbor Day is today.
Arab countries are seeing the Iraq Study Group's report as proof President Bush has failed. Arab countries aren't the only ones cheering the report, though. The American press has been positively giddy about it, even though it's been ill-received by conservatives and liberals who actually study foreign policy.
Australian women plan "bikini protest" of imam's comments that the everyday attire of women in that country makes them nothing more than "uncovered meat."
Democrats' 2006 victories seemed to have purged the Republican party of its moderates. Democrats, meanwhile, are alleged to have secretly met with the terrorist group Hamas. Not everyone believes this, though.

And now, today's Shrub Report
December 7, 2006 - 13:19 ET by Roger the ShrubberAnd now, today's Shrub Report:
Happy 91st birthday, El Tuco!!!
Introducing the "Iraq Surrender Committee"…
Reason 8,586 why France sucks…
Today's "Damn that Bush Economy" update… and another…
Another thing George Bush is probably being blamed for…
Karl Rove is still fine-tuning his Weather Machine. Nothing to see here folks. Move along now…
Jimmy Carter lies? Truly shocking news…
Look for the "child-rape and forced prostitution" market to go up big time in Somalia…
Arlen Specter passes the Senate Judiciary Committee gavel to another liberal, Patty Leahy.
Monkeys JUST MIGHT fly out of the ass… of the world.
Mexico begins "social re-engineering"…
Finally, some hope for Hater, FatesWebb, and the assorted other NB Lefttards… (sorry Wombat. You're beyond hope.)
Say "bye-bye" to our economy once Barney Frank takes charge…
Congress tries to avoid working more than 106 days this year.
Dem dere damn Injuns be buying Rock and Roll!!!
Want to buy the Pennsylvania Turnpike, the oldest rural freeway in America? Got $30 billion? Just keep in mind you will have to keep union-wage-paid ticket-takers, who went on strike the day before Thanksgiving 2004, not happy with the obviously-ridiculously-low yearly salary of $50,000 to sit in a booth and make change.
Today would have been Harry Chapin's 64th birthday. It reminded me of a Billy Milano (of Stormtroopers of Death fame) classic, "Ode to Harry":
Harry got in his car
And turned the key
Started up and headed up the L.I.E.
Too cheap to get a real car
Had a Volkswagon Rabbit
And that put an end to Harry's cheap habit
Cause the trucker couldn't stop
So the driver just took aim
And when he hit Harry
Harry burst into flames
You're dead now Harry
And you can't come back
You'd still be alive if you drove a Cadillac
And finally, Today in Liberalism History: Happy 78th birthday, Noam Chomsky.
Whew!
Happy Birthday Eli Wallach

The Man With No Name
December 7, 2006 - 14:16 ET by Carl Kolchak"Pink Cadillac" was pretty cheesy. I also didn't like "Unforgiven", and thought it was very overrated. Gene Hackman and Morgan Freeman are great actors, but for that movie to be succesful Eastwood should have had Lee Van Cleef(he may have been dead by that time, but still would be better than Hackman or Freeman in that movie) and the bad dude from "Fistful of Dollars" and "For a Few Dollars More" star in it. I think the bad dude's name is Gian Marie Volonte or something like that, but he is by far one of the coolest bad dudes in a movie of all time.

Classic Eastwood Quote
December 7, 2006 - 18:26 ET by Carl KolchakThere is a quote from "A Fistful of Dollars" I like better, but the 2nd best movie quote of all time in my opinion, has to be from "Dirty Harry". I don't know who directed that movie, but one of the best shots I have ever seen in a movie is when Scorpio is in the middle of the football field after Harry has shot him, and then the camera rapidly fades away from him. I am extremly impressed by that.
"I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. December 7, 2006 - 14:16 ET by John in CAThe article that links from why France Sucks talks about cop killer abu-Jamal. Apparently John Conyers isn't happy about the House wasting it's time on such trivialities.
If this was January and the new Congress was sworn in, the cop-killer abu-Jamal would likely have another advocate attempting to thwart the resolution condemn Fwance for naming a street after the cop killer.
New demo representative Keith Ellison (MN 5th) is a fan of the cop-killer. Powerline Blog did a 19 part series on the real Keith Ellison (google search result for Ellison and abu-Jamal on Powerline).
[...] Ellison's February 2000 speech on behalf of domestic terrorist Kathleen
Soliah/Sara Jane Olson picked up this reprehensible aspect of Ellison's
career and united it with his missionary work on behalf of the Nation
of Islam. In that speech Ellison called for the release of Soliah/Olson
and spoke favorably of cop killers Mumia Abu-Jamal and Assata Shakur.
The Star Tribune has never gotten around to reporting what Ellison said
on that occasion either.

I was listening to NPR today and heard an amazing thing. There was a panel discussing Iraq and the Baker recommendations. Leon Panetta, Sandra Day O’Conner, were panelists. I heard I believe it was O’Conner saying that there were some Iraqi troops ready and more on the way. This is a far cry from the “No troops are read now” and the implication that there is nothing being done. The funny thing or sad if you will is that the assessment was put out there as a rosy outlook.

December 7, 2006 - 16:19 ET by BufordI Am, Ditto's on the blessings. Even more important were the people who thought enough of this country to enlist and fight and die for the freedom we have today!
Sadly, the mass patriotism that happened then and immediately after 9/11 is missing in the country today.
How quickly we forget now, in this age of instant gratification.

December 7, 2006 - 17:07 ET by curiousI share your reverance for this day, for the men and women who died at PH, and for all who fought and fell in WWII.
I also share your sorrow at the decline of mass patriotism since the immediate aftermath of 9/11. Where I likely differ from you is in attributing a major portion of that decline to the policies of the far right. President Bush had a golden opportunity to unite the country after 9/11 (recall that even liberal legislators, and Dan Rather, pledged their support for the administration), but he choose instead to pursue a right wing policy agenda through an electoral strategy of divide and conquer. It was the President, through his partisan policies, appointments and electoral attacks, and through his decision to invade Iraq, that killed any chance of the country uniting behind his leadership. True, some left wing, partisan Dems would always have resisted that leadership, but most moderate Dems. as well as most Indeps, would have put their country first, if only the President had.
Not a popular observation, but one I feel is basically supported by the evidence.
A final note on the idea that Americans enlisted in mass to fight in WWII. I just finished Flags of our Fathers and was struck by the fact that three, or half, of the flagraisers were drafted, and did not enlist of their own free will. I just found that curious.
Draft eligible
December 7, 2006 - 17:26 ET by dagdaAs someone who was draft eligible, waiting for the draft was one of the options. You knew you were going to go, it was just a question of when. Being drafted did not label you as resistant to the war or fighting, it was more a case of weighing your options.
If you enlisted, you got your choice of armed force, Army, Navy, Marines. If you if were drafted, it was usually the Army, sometimes the Marines. If you were married, you wanted to wait as long as you could, or if you had an important job. Many of those were drafted. If you wanted a preference or had nothing else to do, you enlisted.

Iwo Jima
December 7, 2006 - 17:29 ET by Carl KolchakOne of the interesting parts about the flag raising on Iwo Jima is that it was raised during the middle of the conflict and not at the end. In fact I think 2 or 3 of those who raised the flag actually ended up dying later on Iwo Jima. Also I don't think that was the first flag raised on Iwo Jima, but the second.
Now I probably wouldn't agree much with you with Dan Rather and the rest of the MSM though supporting the president much though. Didn't some MSM announcer say "even if you don't like him, he is still your President" Now that was real supportive wasn't it. People were united for about 2 weeks. Nobody seemed to really care if the person next to you had the same political views or not and nobody was flipping each other off driving, but after about 2 weeks people started worrying about who they could blame for 9/11, or the fact the person next to them didn't have the same political views, and then people went back to flipping each other off while driving. Now as far as I am concerned the whole 9/11 Commission was a joke, and the only thing anyone from either side really cared about was who they were going to blame. Those who dislike Bush blame Bush, and those who dislike Clinton blame Clinton. I only saw a unity for about 2-4 weeks, and then it seemed to vanish.
"There they battled up Iwo Jima's hill,
Two hundred and fifty menBut only twenty-seven lived to walk back down again
And when the fight was over
And when Old Glory raisedAmong the men who held it high

December 7, 2006 - 18:03 ET by curiousIt wasn't meant to be Bush bashing; it was just intended to be an ironic follow up on your lament on the decline of mass patriotism since 9/11. With all my heart I wish Bush had proven to be more of a statesman, and less of a politician. But the fact of this matter is that he didn't, and my only hope in mentioning it is that we can learn from history.
But tell me: why is it that any perceived criticism of Bush has to be interpreted as Bush bashing. Disagreement is a far cry from hatred. We learn, and grow, from criticism, both of ourselves and of others, friends as well as foes. But, more importantly, how are we ever to find the common ground that we've lost, and that is so essential to the health of our Republic, when paranoid dickheads jump all over the slightest perception of difference or disagreement. It's a real conversation killer, and we need more conversation, and less vindictiveness.
Finally, it has long been my suspicion that many of those who so readily find only hatred in their political opponents are in truth consumed by their own self hatred. If you hate your life so much, fine, that's your concern, but leave me out of it.

December 7, 2006 - 20:59 ET by JABJB, nope, I have no issues with the health, thanks for your concern though.
I just had life coming at me from all directions (maintaing three properties and a business of my own with 8 employees) and my Internet Satellite link being down did not add anything positive to the mix.

Glad to see you safe and sound!

December 7, 2006 - 21:10 ET by JABCT, I don't have to track them down, HedoubleL, I'm married to one; although I have managed to raise all three of my kids as conservatives. Believe it or not, when the political conversations erupt, I have my three kids on my side. Should I be proud or what?!

Scheduled to take off in two hours....but looks doubtful.
A night shot is the most impressive thing one can see....and I can see it from several hundred miles away.
The NASA countdown and related info is here.

December 7, 2006 - 19:48 ET by JABBlonde, I do not believe it will go this evening, too high of winds and heavy cloud cover here in Lake Wales. I am only about 60 miles from the site, so my guess is; it's a no go this evening. Too bad though, I love the night launches, they are spectacular. My appologies to all for getting off the subject.

December 7, 2006 - 19:51 ET by BlondeNot off topic, at all.
It's the open thread, after all.
I suspected as much with the weather. It is beautiful and clear here.
Too bad, I think this was supposed to have been the first night shot in about five years.

December 7, 2006 - 20:01 ET by JABBlonde, I watched the last night launch over a big lake (where I live), WHAT a SITE it was and I am looking forward to the next one but I conclude it will not be tonight -- IMHO.
BTW, I was not sure we were on the OT, so my appologies were a waste of time; no matter, it's all good. I would rather be too polite than a little rude.

December 7, 2006 - 20:30 ET by JABacumen, I didn't like the fact I could not modify the email message to Carter. He single handily managed to screw the majority of Americans and set them back close to the Great Depression (which I survived) and now wants to try and retify the situation by backing terrorist groups.
Stupid A$$ peanut farmer needs to stay on his farm and keep his mouth shut, to HEdoubleL with respect for the moron. I know for a fact he did not wait in line for gas like I did nor wonder where his next meal was coming from.
In conclusion: SHUT UP Carter your 15 minutes are over, thank GOD!

Message modification
December 7, 2006 - 20:33 ET by dagdaJAB, I wanted to modify the message, too. However, I have been so annoyed at his smug defence of the book, that I thought maybe this would help clog his email box.
