Is Times political reporter Adam Nagourney outflanking DNC Chairman Howard Dean on the Democratic left?
That appears to be the case, judging by Sunday's report from Jeff Zeleny on Dean's weekend speech in Washington, "Democratic Leader Reminds Party That Victory Is No Mandate." (The online headline is different.)
Zeleny quotes Dean: "'The other party made mistakes in the past claiming that elections are mandates. Elections are not mandates. The voters of this country loaned the Democrats the power of the country for two years. Now it’s our job to earn it back again.''
That seems to put Dean to the right of Times reporter Adam Nagourney, who said in an online in-house interview on November 8, as the margin of the Democratic victory in the House was being tallied: ""Twenty-five votes is a lot of votes and that's what it is right now, it could be more by the time we finish counting. And that's a large margin. And, first of all, that means the Democratic Party can clearly claim a mandate and their party leaders will have a lot of flexibility in trying to build coalitions to get stuff through."

December 4, 2006 - 16:52 ET by dscottAnd everyone thought Dean was insane... He's as rational as Karl Rove. Interesting concept of loaning power, tricking people to vote for you, backtracking on your campaign promises and then having to overcome buyer's remorse with goodies no one wanted. It will be interesting.

December 4, 2006 - 21:37 ET by pocomocoAs we've seen in past elections, if the Democrats win by only one vote - they'll declare it a mandate.
Nothing new here. Old news. Yada, yada, yada................
What the American people want
December 4, 2006 - 23:15 ET by nkviking75Howie, every time your members open up their cavernous mouths, they make pronouncements about what the American people want. They even do it when what they're saying is demonstrably false. When they were the minority the bottled up the GOP majority (thanks in large part to Republican spinelessness). As a majority, they'll do whatever they can get away with. Let's pray that the President will have the guts to give that veto pen an overdue workout. But I'm not holding my breath.

December 5, 2006 - 00:05 ET by Jinx McHueDean got the part about elections not being mandates right. Unfortunately, he prefaced it with his usual stupidity. No, Howie, you nincompoop, it wasn't the Republicans talking ad nauseum about elections and mandates. That was you Democrats. Remember? "Bush only got 51% of the vote, so he doesn't have a mandate."
