Today's starters:

Media: Back during the NYT's fanatical crusade about women's golf, the paper repeatedly stopped its columnists from criticizing its support to get women allowed into the Augusta National club on the grounds that doing so would send a discordant editorial voice. Many newspapers have similar policies. Apparently not the Minneapolis Star Tribune, though, where the paper printed a Sunday editorial that explicitly undercut a columnist who had argued that the staging of a play critical of the Roman Catholic church was hypocritical and wondered whether a similar play would be produced taking Islam to task. Scott at Power Line has the details.

Politics: Is Nancy Pelosi using the media to nudge Democrats she doesn't prefer out of the limelight? John Bolton resigns. Will the Bush Admin make another push to secure Baghdad? Ed Morrissey looks at how the sudden Obama-mania might be a sign of desperation among anti-Hillary Democrats.

Society: A look at single parent conceptions (i.e. one parent having the child alone from the start).

Sadly, it appears John Bolton is out at the UN.  The scuttlebutt is that George Mitchell may replace him.  Oh, Joy!

George Mitchell? Yeah, I bet he's going to put the fear of God in those UN leeches.

Thanks to Dodd, the gaggle of democrats and one former senator--rino, we are losing Mr. Bolton--the best representative we've had in a long while.  It's a damn shame.  It's a travesty.  It reminds us who these people are and why they must be defeated.

Iraq and al Qaeda

What does Congressman-elect Chris Carney (D-Pennsylvania) know about Saddam Hussein and al Qaeda?Newly elected Pennsylvania Congressman, Democrat Chris Carney, a former Senior Terrorism and Intelligence Advisor at the Pentagon,
has recently been quoted in a number of publications discussing his
knowledge of and role in prewar Iraq intelligence, particularly on the
issue Saddam Hussein’s links to al Qaeda. His views on the subject are
a stark contrast to many in his party, particularly Senator Carl Levin,
who has long expressed his belief that any link between Saddam
Hussein's regime and al Qaeda was a manufacture of the Bush
administration. Carney's comments and experience on the issue may even
put him in the cross-hairs of Sen. Levin's reported investigation into the matter in the coming months. What did Congressman Carney say? What does he know?more here

Thursday will be the 65th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.  God bless all those who gave their lives at Pearl Harbor and in the long battle to defeat the 1940's Axis of Evil.  Sadly, I fear that generation was the last American generation with the courage to wage such a fight.

1940's Axis of Evil.

Except I'd put that back a decade. The axis of evil was festering and being appeased until September 3, 1939.

The 1940's were the result of what happens when free people appease dictators.

The funny thing is we were always told that this must never be allowed to happen again.

And of course, as we know GERMANY NEVER ATTACKED THE U.S... prior to the declaration of war.

Reminds me of my question tod

Reminds me of my question today about Hillary being term limited out of being an allowed candidate as for she did "hold" the "office of the presidency" as a married legal entity for eight years.  Language of the 22 Amendment surely doesn't through the laws of marriage out the window when deciding how to protect americans from their presidents.  Now, having "equal rights" does not seem to include splitting such hairs to favor such possibly corrupting interpretations of a favorite check and balance on Presidential Power.  She was 42's legal coholder of office with all its perks and maybe perkiness.  A limit to how much time at the top you are allowed is far from equal rights argument and seems allowable by such language in the 22 Amendment as co-interpreted with what marriage is and what laws of marriage apply.  Did our legislators and those responsible for this amendment really apply this amendment to spouses (husband or wifes) by open language allusions to "holding of office"?  We are left with a law that could be interpreted as excluding a spouse from running after eights years co-holding by just recognizing the nature of marriage and the marriage contract.  Why does this Amendment have such room for interpretation?  Why won't this possible breach of Constitutional Law not fade away?  I vote in favor of spouses (male or female) being so interpreted as limited.  How say you?  Remember Laura could run and appoint 43 chief of staff and give him full access to oval office without such interpretation.  Maybe we do need more lawyers?

Problems with making comments on NB - Firefox?

Is anyone having trouble with their comments on NB? I was trying to make a comment and when I would preview a bunch of HTML code had been added and there were a lot of line breaks. I deleted all the HTML code and previewed again and it still changed things.

I just changed my browser to firefox - could that have anything to do with it?

Dee,I had the same problem.

Dee,

I had the same problem.  Works fine in IE, but not Firefox.  I have IE 7 at work and IE 6.x at home.  There are translation issues even between IE versions sometimes (I need to upgrade!!)  There's probably an add-in to Firefox to resolve the problem.  Those wise and wily NB webmeister's will probably know all about it.

I have been using Firefox almost exclusively for awhile now, and have noticed this site very occasionally doesn't work right. My usual problem is, when I try to type in the comment box, sometimes Firefox thinks I'm typing something to find on the page instead. Since there are some internal pages at my office that require IE, I also installed extension "IE TAB" which allows you to use the IE rendering engine inside a Firefox window.

Dee,

You think you have problems? In order to copy and paste above a comment I have to open a session of NB in Firefox, as it will allow me to copy text and type in the subject line but not in the comment box. To type in the comment box, I have to have a session opened in IE. This started right about the time they started running certain adds in here.

The funny thing is that I can open up IE in another computer in the office and I have no problems in NB.

Strange.

Dee, I use FF 2.0 and posted a comment a few minutes ago with no problem. Course, I don't input my own html, I use the toolbar - if that makes any difference.

I'm sure that this has something to do with Microsoft. I had several favourite YouTube bookmarks that worked fine until a couple of weeks ago. Suddenly, they didn't work. I had been resisting the upgrade to IE 7.0, but I gave in...suddenly everthing worked fine again...how strange!!!

John Bolton resigning as UN

John Bolton resigning as UN Ambassador is a sad day. I think he's done a superb job. It's a shame a couple of RINO's (Lincoln Chafee) have stymied the permanent appointment of this great American and statesman to that disaster known as the UN.

Pamela at Atlas Shrugs is a huge cheerleader for John Bolton and she's not very happy about this either...

(Since Pamela's not going to be very busy cheerleading for John Bolton now, maybe I can finally convince her to come and ummm, cheer with me...hehe)

And Michelle Malkin's not very happy about this development

Alternative Energe Source

This is charming....no drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, but the French (!!!!) want to float this natural gas barge off of South Florida.

Drilling off Florida

Interesting note, I wrote Sen. Mel Martinez to see what his views were of drilling off the west coast of Florida and would he vote in favor of expanding the permits to inside 100 mile limit.  He was opposed to it siteing environmental reprocussions, disturbing the esthetics of beaches and possible terrorist targets.  Pretty lame considering our current energy situation and the fact that the earth is not flat and such activity could not be seen from our beaches.

I think he was insulted by my suggesting he believed the earth was flat.  His reply was rather curt and I did not hear back from him until election day drew near.

Of course, it's perfectly acceptable that the Chinese and Cuba are going to drill closer to the FL coast than our own Congress will allow USA companies to explore and drill...
