CBS's Hannah Storm Quizzes Laura Bush On Iraq During Christmas Decoration Discussion

By Michael Rule | November 30, 2006 - 16:50 ET

For the second consecutive year, CBS seized upon the opportunity to view the White House Christmas decorations to ambush First Lady Laura Bush with questions about Iraq. However, when CBS interviewed first lady and Senator-elect Hillary Clinton in 2000, Jane Clayson ignored policy questions and instead highlighted Mrs. Clinton’s accomplishments and inquired about Mrs. Clinton’s favorite Christmas traditions.

On Thursday’s "Early Show," co-host Hannah Storm portrayed Iraq as hopeless and was dismayed that U.S. troops are not being withdrawn:

"And can you offer them words of comfort and hope as I think many of them were hoping that perhaps with the recommendations of the Iraq Study Group that maybe we would begin a gradual pullout of troops but yet, once again we hear today that our troops will be there indefinitely."

Mrs. Bush dismissed Storm’s assertion, and retorted that the recommendations of the Iraq Study Group, the "blue ribbon commission" led by former Secretary of State James Baker and former Congressman Lee Hamilton, have not yet been submitted, and she noted that the group’s report is just one piece of information on which the president will rely:

"Well, we don't have the recommendations from the Iraq Study Group. Those have not been submitted to the president, we don't really know what's in those, yet. But the president will weigh what comes in those recommendations, along with the recommendations of his generals, and the recommendations of the government of Iraq, the duly elected government of Iraq, I might add. Over 70% of Iraqis turned out to vote. That's more than Americans turned out to vote. And I think it's very, very important that we do whatever we can to help Iraq build a stable government there. It will make a huge difference in the Middle East and in this very volatile part of the world. So I'm glad that we're going to stand with the Iraqis. I hope that this meeting that the president had with Maliki, which seemed to be a very substantive meeting, will be the first of many discussions of ways we can work together to make sure the violence is reduced."

This exchange came exactly one year after CBS News Senior White House Correspondent Bill Plante, again while viewing the White House Christmas decorations, asserted President Bush had no plan and was the subject of much criticism:

"Let me ask you this, your husband today is giving a major speech about Iraq to prove that he has a plan, because he has been so criticized by many people because the war keeps dragging on, and of course that means there are troops away for Christmas, first of all does it bother you when he's criticized the way he has been?"

Plante’s inquiry mirrored the treatment Mrs. Bush received from ABC’s Jessica Yellin, as reported here on NewsBusters, last year. Compare these questions to some of the one’s then Senator-elect Hillary Clinton received in 2000:

"It's nice to be there. You've been very busy lately, obviously--Senator-elect today, first lady and--and an author. How do you keep it all straight, Mrs. Clinton?"

Clayson also inquired about how the Clinton’s celebrate Christmas:

"Can you describe some of the images that we're seeing and tell us what Christmas has been like for the Clintons in the White House?"

It is fair to ask, which Storm did, what the first lady’s thoughts are for members of the armed services deployed overseas and their families. But if CBS wants to ask a first lady about policy, why would they pick on Laura Bush and give Hillary Clinton a pass? After all, Laura Bush is not involved in shaping policy, where as Hillary Clinton was not only a Senator-elect, but was part of an administration that advertised two Clinton’s for the price of one.

I can't believe how bias they

I can't believe how bias they can be, why the hell didn't CBS barrage First lady Clinton with questions about the war in Iraq in 2000?

This is the most destructive and asinine foreign policy in American history and CBS didn't have the nerve to ask Mrs. Clinton questions about the civil war in Iraq six years before it happened.

The bias at CBS is soooo obvious.

Please, won't you dazzle us with more of your brilliant non-logic?

No, I think we have a new win

No, I think we have a new winner for the worst President ever award.

History condemns Carter for what he didn't do, Bush wins this award for what he did do and how badly he F'd it up.

Yep Carter did not hear the o

Yep Carter did not hear the old saying "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing" and President Bush did.  I guess since President Bush did something then you castigate him for doing something.  Of course you would castigate him no matter what because you are a nincompooop.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark. -- save my gun, shoot a liberal.

"History condemns Carter

"History condemns Carter for what he didn't do,..."

This statement is an absolute joke.  Carter is condemned both for what he did and did not do.  He was, without question, the worst president in my lifetime.  Those who put Bush at his level are purely partisan.  Bush has responded to issues and problems, and that response is what he is being blasted for.  We've never had anything like 9/11 and so it is impossible to compare how Bush responded to that day vs. other presidents.

By the way, the media does not seem to condemn Carter for anything.  They treat this clown as if he's got all the answers.  He's nothing but a left wing hack, who had about as much right being president as Bozo the Clown.

Stupid idiot

CRAWL BACK INTO YOUR LIBERAL HOLE IN THE GROUND! YOU KNOW THE OLD SAYING WHAT COMES GOES AROUND, Liberals will get theirs!

Evidence please...

Evidence provided for your statement(s) please. By the way, history condemns Carter for what he DID do, as well as what he didn't do. It was Carter whose foreign policy treaties and policies that were violated by those who he entered into agreement with, on a continual basis. It was Carter who began drastic cuts in the military, weaking the strength of the US.

As for Bush, you can't provide a single example of a "foreign policy f*ck up", that I can't pick apart as nonsense, simple liberal talking point BS and utterly without factual basis.

Bunk. Why don't you learn some "history" before making erroneous statements about what "people" condemn Carter for.

(By the way, "history" never condemned anyone.)

Aren't you ever embarrassed at constantly demonstrating your ignorance on a public forum.

I guess not.

Lack of perspective

You have to understand, that where "blingbling" is concerned, he only knows revisionist history about any president. Bush is the first president he has actually "lived" through. In the thick of the Clinton presidency, he was only 7-early teens.

The bottom line, blingbling, is that you still don't have a grasp for reality, or facts. Destructive and asinined foreign policy is defined by providing for the defense of this nation? Typical liberal nonsense.

Muddying the water

Nice attempt to muddy the waters.  The point is, Mrs. Clinton got treated with kid gloves.  Mrs. Bush did not.  There were plenty of things Hillary could have been asked about.  Moreover, during her last Christmas in the White House she was also the Senator-elect.  In other words, Hillary was (and is) a politician by her own choice.  Mrs. Bush is, by her choice, simply the wife of the president, with no responsibility for policy.  Hillary opened herself for hard questions and didn't get them.  Laura is trying to be a traditional First Lady, and the press won't allow it.

There is nothing that anyone could have asked Mrs. Clinton in 2000 that could possibly compare to the murder of 3000 American solders, the mutilation of 50,000 more, the massacre of 500,000+ Iraqis or the squandering of half a trillion dollars of Tax payer money.

That was , flat out , an ambush. I detest Hillary Clinton. Were I to be introduced to her at a public function, I would treat her with the respect her POSITION warrants, Ditto, should I iterview her on TV. If she came to herald the Girl Scouts improvements, that is what I would ask her about.

There is nothing that anyone could have asked Mrs. Clinton in 2000 that could possibly compare to the murder of 3000 American solders...

No? I realize 9/11 was still nine months away, but looking back it was her husband's foreign policy failures that emboldened bin-Laden and his ilk to plan and execute the September 11th attacks (pronounced: the murder of 3000 American civilians.)

...the massacre of 500,000+ Iraqis...

This claim has been thoroughly debunked, and I'm not going to waste bandwidth debating it here.

The lack of contempt you have for the life's of our Solders is sickening.

Hey, I'm proud of the lack of contempt I have for the lives of our soldiers. My father raised me to have nothing but the utmost lack of contempt for the men and women who defend this country. In fact, I doubt anyone lacks more contempt for our servicemen/women than I do!

BB's foolishness

I wish I'd hung around a little longer to fire back at BB, but here goes:

"There is nothing that anyone could have asked Mrs. Clinton in 2000 that could possibly compare to the murder of 3000 American solders, the mutilation of 50,000 more, the massacre of 500,000+ Iraqis or the squandering of half a trillion dollars of Tax payer money. "

If you want to talk numbers, and yours are questionable, how about the 2,000,000 in Rwanda who died when America did nothing during the Clinton Administration?  Bubba has since apologized for that oversight.

As for the deaths and injuries of our soldiers, they are certainly tragic.  However, these men and women are volunteers who knew what they might be getting into.  Although there are a few malcontents, the vast majority of our forces still support the mission, and thousands have willingly gone back for multiple tours.  If this mission were as misguided as you allege, our military is made up of intelligent people who would not mindlessly walk into a suicide mission.

"Why don't the lives of our finest fellow American mean anything to you? CBS asked Mrs. Bush about Iraq, BECAUSE AMERICANS ARE DYING EVERYDAY."  How dare you assume I don't care about American lives lost, you arrogant twit.  But while we're at it, does it mean nothing to you that thousands of Iraqis were murdered, tortured, and maimed by Saddam?  Do you care about the Iraqis who died for Saddam's ambitions in the Gulf War and the war against Iran?  Does it matter to you that Kurds in the north of Saddam's own country died due to the use of chemical weapons--the supposedly non-existent WMD's the left loves to whine about?  Does it matter that he also used chemical weapons in the war against Iraq.  How about Israelis who are dying due to suicide bombers?  Did you know Saddam was paying the families of those bombers something like $25,000 for their sacrifices?

And are you willing to accept the blood that will be shed if we leave too soon?  Will you take credit for the spilled blood of Iraqis who "collaborated" with our forces and will face retribution from the terrorists, including Al Qaeda?  Are you ready to take the blame for Iraq likely becoming another Iran?

"The lack of contempt you have for the life's of our Solders is sickening."  While it's not what you meant to say, you're right.  I don't have contempt for the lives of our soldiers.  I have the utmost respect for their courage and selflessness.  The left could learn a few things from them.

Spoken like a true idiot who hasnever sacreficed anything for anyone.  I served in the first Gulf War.  My Brother, My cousin, and My brother-in-law are all serving there now, and all have re-enlisted during this war after having already setting boots on ground in Iraq once.  Why?  Why do you think that is?  Propaganda?  All they hear about over there are idiots like you.  Yet they persist in their efforts.  Why?  Because it is the right thing to do, for their families, for their country, and for the Iraqi people.  Spend a few days talking to vets of the war, and listen to how differantly the story comes out of their mouths than the stories you hear in the MSM.  Hear about the overwhelming number of Iraqis who appreciate what it is we do.  Hear about children who are tasting freedom and liberty for the first time in their lives.

Try spending some time thinking about someone other than yourself, and that is who you are thinking of with your BS, thinking only of how your rhetoric makes you feel when you wake up ignorant in the morning.  These soldier know better than any of those in the press, or those running their mouths here at home, about what it is they are doing, and why they wish to cotinue doing it until the job is completed.  If you really respected them, you would try to peek around the bong long enough to get a glimpse of their point of view.

I can't believe how bias they can be, why the hell didn't CBS barrage First lady Clinton with questions about the war in Iraq in 2000?

Excellent job on the straw-man argument, bling! Of course, Michael's original article never suggested that Hillary should've been questioned about "the war in Iraq", but rather pointed out that Hillary (Senator-elect) was not questioned about policy at all.

Some questions Hillary could have been asked:

  • "For the first time in 20 years, a U.S. president is handing over the leadership of a nation much worse off than when he entered office. Bush is facing a deteriorating economic outlook, a bear market in stocks, a huge tax burden, a bloated federal government, a record trade deficit, a growing number of citizens falling deeper into debt, ongoing Social Security and Medicare problems and a nation considerably less safe and secure. How could this have happened?"
  • "Bill Clinton assigned Al Gore the task of "reinventing government." As a result, government has grown out of control. Not surprisingly, the nation's tax burden has grown right along with it. Your thoughts?"
  • "Your husband claims that he eliminated 300,000 federal jobs. What he doesn't say is that 75 percent of those jobs were in the Department of Defense! Since 1993, the federal government's monthly payroll has gone from $5.9 billion to $7.4 billion. Overall federal outlays have reached an astounding $1.8 trillion -- 20 percent of our GDP and an increase of 50 percent since you took office! Keep in mind that during this same period, defense spending fell 49 percent to just 16 percent of total federal spending. Do you feel this makes America stronger than when you moved in to the White House?"
  • "Since 1992, the amount of money the federal government has collected each year from its citizens has grown by $100 billion. In fact, government tax collections have outpaced the rate of inflation by a whopping 250 percent. According to the National Center for Policy Analysis, federal taxes consume 25.9 percent of the average American family's income, and state and local taxes abscond with another 13.1 percent. How do you think this affects the average American family, who elected you on the basis of a middle-class tax cut?"
  • "The foreign trade deficit significantly increased in each year of the Clinton administration -- growing from $39 billion to $360 billion -- an increase of nearly 1,000 percent. Why do you suppose that is?"
  • "Bill Clinton entered office pledging to "save Social Security and Medicare." Instead, he left these problems for the next administration to tackle. By failing to act on Social Security and Medicare, he may have exacerbated the entire problem and made any possible solution more painful. Why, when he had eight years to do so, did he not "fix" these problems?"
  • "Why is it that your husband's adminstration has, for the past eight years, treated international terrorism as a criminal matter rather than a threat to national security?"

Of course, any member of the MSM actually asking Clinton such questions would have instantly become persona-non-grata inside the beltway...

I am glad I rarely watch these shows, it is maddening enough the one's I do watch purposely...what a bunch of filthy hypocrites. Laura Bush is a lady, something those like Hannah questioning her will never be.

By the way, I have never seen what the media is doing to now to President Bush about his legacy and how he is going to be written about for history with all these so-called 'historians'....

I don't recall all of this being done to the BJ lying President, the look the other way President when we get attacked time and time again...do not recall this at all, especially two years before he was done serving in his orifice.

Media are pigs wallowing in their filthy troughs...

(No offense to pigs btw)

Hannah Storm

I don't see why the White House, including Mrs. Bush, pretends that the press is capable of civility and decency. She has to be her own Tony Snow, and if Hannah Storm wants to be Helen THomas, well, where's Albert Belle or MIchael Strahan when you need him?

Once again Laura Bush has out

Once again Laura Bush has out classed every one. Hannah Storm should be ashamed of herself. Mrs. Bush was not elected by anyone, she is the First Lady of the United States of America and deserves Storm's respect. This is why I don't watch the msm. Shameful behavior!

Absolutely right.  Libs like

Absolutely right.  Libs like the individual who posted above just do not see reality.  It is patently ridiculous to grill a first lady regarding foreign policy at any time, let alone during an interview which is supposed to cover Christmas decorations at the White House.  However, Mrs. Bush, as usual, handled the situation in such a classy way that most liberals would not understand it.  They comprehend vitriole, name-calling and demagoguing.  When someone displays respect and dignity, liberals are lost.

I believe Laura's one smart c

I believe Laura's one smart cookie who knows that any interview she gives with the MSM will have the usual questions thrown at her about her husband's policies. Therefore, she comes prepared, unlike her interviewers.

If the media treated Hillary the same way

If the media treated Hillary the same way..

Great analysis Michael. This combined with the usual carefully scripted and framed softball questions thrown at Jimmy Carter this week (he's like becoming a regular, every few months - makes the rounds) tells the story, does it not?

Imagine, the questions the press would ask a (any) Republican 1st lady who were to find herself in the same position, as did Hillary during the late 90's:

- Just why is it that your brilliant internationalist president husband has not been able to obtain the much-coveted UN resolutions supporting his pending war in Kosovo?

- Were you surprised, as we were, that your husband's estimates of over 100,000 civilians killed in an ongoing genocide in Kosovo (the selling point for war support) has been dismissed in the Hague Tribunals?

- Would you like to defend for your husband against the condemnations of his leadership in the NATO led war,  by former President Jimmy Carter, President Mandela, the Pope, and Susan Sarandon for, and I quote Nelson Mandela: "I also condemn NATO for taking action outside of the United Nations and doing precisely what Milosevic is doing. Killing civilians, destroying the infrastructures of the country. Destroying bridges and all of the structure..”?

- Just why is it, that your brilliant husband, the President, has not been able to garner up support from our usual allies in his upcoming planned "shock and awe" dubbed Operation Desert Fox?

- Now that the President has pulled out the UN inspectors, and bombed Baghdad into dust, does the President have a plan, or is he just going to go out and play some golf, to get it out of his system?

- Do you feel really stupid now for blasting out mean spirited and baseless accusations or a "right-wing conspiracy", that your husband has publicly admitted that he did have a sexual liaison with "that woman [very young volunteer]" and that he lied to us all?

- It now seems obvious to us, and many have been asking the questions; just how complacent was your husband as he and his administration watch the genocidal horror unfold during the lead-to the Rwanda genocide?

- Looking back at the Rwandan genocide, when some 800,000 innocent humans were hacked to death in 3 months time, and considering that your husband - in fact, all of us - have together said, "never again," just what is your husband going to say if and when we finally decide that we should print a story on the estimated 2.7 million people who have died in the Congo between 1997 and 2001 from civil war, genocide and starvation and disease caused by those events?

- Ms. First Lady. On a more personal note, here, during this joyful Christmas Season. Just how low do you let your emotions get, every time you see a blue dress?

Sigh......if only Mrs. Bush were on CBS to talk up WH Ramadan decorations maybe she could get some respect from Hannah.........All in good time young Americans.

As far as Mrs. Clinton goes, no need for WH ramadan decoration shields from the media.  Hillary and the media are of the same mindset.  For example, take Abdurahman Alamoudi....please.  Mr. Alamoudi was jailed in 2003 for attempting to launder money from a Libyan terror-front "charity" into Syria via London.  Why is this significant.  Well, Mr Alamoudi is the guy who until 1998 cerified Mulim chaplains for the US military.

Other credits of Mr Alamoudi include devising a three-week course in California public schools of which students adopt Muslim names, wear Islamic garb, give up candy and TV for Ramadan, memorize suras from the Koran, learn that "jihad" means "internal personal struggle," profess the Muslim faith, and recite prayers that begin "in the name of Allah," etc.  No seperation of mosque and state problems reported.

What has this have to do with Hillary, you might ask?  Oh, that's right, Mr. Alamoudi was also an adviser on Islamic matters to Hillary until his little terrorist money-laundering problem exploded.  But by all means don't ask Hillary any of the tough questions - especially during her ten year Presidential-hopeful media pep rally.
