Over at the DNC's official blog, Tracy Russo thought he'd found another Macaca moment:
If a Democratic uttered something even close to this the media would be all over it like white on rice:
“White rednecks” who “didn’t show up to vote for us” partly cost GOPers their cong. majorities, Rep. Adam Putnam (R-FL) told fellow Republicans today. And Putnam, seeking the post of GOP conference chair, chided ex-Chair J.C. Watts (R-OK) for ruining the conference’s ability to serve its members.
Three Republicans in the room independently confirmed to the Hotline the substance and context of Putnam’s remarks.
Ezra discusses it over at TAPPED.
Ezra Klein wasn't quite as pro-Democrat as Russo, but he was still professing that Democrats would be crushed for such a remark:
Imagine if Nancy Pelosi uttered the same remark, then compare that imaginary firestorm with the one likely to result from Putnam's comments. It's all well and good to argue that Democrats carry seeds of elite condescension towards low-income whites. What's foolish is to think the GOP's powerbrokers aren't precisely as disconnected, though with a heapin' helpin' of opportunism and exploitation thrown in for good measure.
Putnam's full quote was “heck, even the white rednecks who go to church on Sunday didn't come out to vote for us.” But didn't these people see Jim Webb touting his white "redneck" credentials in the media during the campaign? How quickly they forget this beaut of a quote from Webb in the October 19 Washington Post, which trumps Mr. Putnam:
"Towel-heads and rednecks – of which I am one. If you write that word, please say that. I mean, I don’t use that pejoratively, I use it defensively. Towel-heads and rednecks became the easy villains in so many movies out there."
Does anyone recall the "firestorm" from the media? The media all over it like "white on rice"? Nope. "Redneck" is not a highly offensive word, although you'd think "towel-head" would be.

Thu, 11/23/2006 - 00:24 ET by liberal_bug_zapperEgads.... there is no such thing as racism. That's just another damn term they use to shut us up. This method of adding "-ism" to a word to indicate prejudices has gotten way out of control. We are all one species. Genetically speaking, we're so close to identical it's impossible to really tell us apart.
They label hate and ignorance with one word.... racism, and then they begin to label anyone who they hate as racists. The term racism is horrible English and should be abolished from any lexicon of any worth. Prejudice is also a term that gets a bad rap. Prejudices are a good thing when used for judging certain types of people. It's generalizations that turn a good trait into a bad thing. All blacks are this, all Asians are this, all whites are that.... total BS.
Bigotry is something else, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that this statement is bigotry. I know tons of rednecks. They even know themselves as rednecks. It isn't an insult.
However, Liberals always use it in the pejorative sense, making it sound insulting.
And all this BS about the N word;.... hell, it's just a word. Giving a word power over you is stupid. This word is no worse than the F word.
The friends I keep, of all colors, creeds and from multiple cultures all think in similar ways. My black friends are nice and conservative and would no more use the N word as they would use the F word. They agree that Blacks in the US think they have a free pass to use any disparaging remarks to other races, but are infuriated when someone other than black uses the N word.
For my final part of this rant, please can anyone tell me how do you tolerate intolerance? This is the Liberal paradox.

I actually agree with this and always wondered since high school why blacks could use the n word so freely to each other?
There is racism but we as a people can have twins that are of twins of two races, asian and caucasian, black and white. We are all far more alike than different.

Thu, 11/23/2006 - 01:20 ET by liberal_bug_zapperUm, I'm not Jewish. Nor do I accept the term as a description of modern day conservatives… and I don’t mean the Pat Buchannan isolationists.
It would behoove you to find out what the definitions of these pejoratives you use are. It would better suit you to use proper language to describe those you speak of rather than incorrect labels.
First, many of the movement's founders were originally liberal Democrats of the Jewish persuasion who saw the error in the way that modern liberal democrats were going and decided to jump ship. This happened in the 1960s. And the term “neocon” was used in a pejorative fashion aimed at the defectors. What is a laugh to most of us conservatives is that many liberals use this as a blanket insult to try and define us. They want the term to be synonymous with “neo-nazi”. You know it’s true! All you need to do is go to one of many Liberal sites on the net and read what they think neocons are. Warmongers, racists, bigots, homophobes, sexist pigs and worst of all, white Christians and Jews who want to rule the world. Well, I may be white, but I’m not a Christian, and I certainly don’t want to rule the world…. Just hang around at the top.
So I reject your insult and will keep exposing you people for the inconsistent attack mongers you are.

Thu, 11/23/2006 - 05:22 ET by liberal_bug_zapperAh, see you must have me confused with a Republican. I don't have a party. I have an ideology. It's much more solid. The Republicans (as you seem to have only just noticed) have not been conservative.
Unlike you however, I do not get my marching orders from some crazy lunatic. I actually read and learn about what it means to be a conservative capitalist with a global vision, hence my unwillingness to stand with the Buchananites.
I read the works of Adam Smith and newer works of Art Laffer. I read actual accounts of socialism failing and capitalism saving the day as was written in 1650 by William Bradford, Governor of the Plymouth Colony, and I do read the works of those who I disagree with like Marx's Capital.
We conservatives don't hold to the party line like you nutcase Dems. It's why more people call themselves conservative than Liberal in this country, but Liberals sometimes win a majority. It isn't because there are more of you, or that your ideas win. It's that conservatives won't vote for those they do not consider conservative. Democrats will vote for anyone, and say or do anything as long as they win. With Democrats, the end justifies the means, with conservatives, the means is how the Republicans won in 94, and how they lost in 06.
Learn it Liberal.... because you will face a bigger loss as communication becomes easier. The information age is exposing all who do not wish to be exposed. The corrupt Republicans... and the even more corrupt, and morally bankrupt Democrats. Your party, and by proxy, you will be defeated.
On the other hand, I don't feel one bit sad the Republicans bit the big one.... I'm a bit worried that our country will suffer because of it, but Republican loss isn't the issue, it's the safety of our country in the hands of a bunch of cowards and traitors.

Thu, 11/23/2006 - 08:36 ET by Andrew H.I am a white redneck. I voted straight GOP--our people won here in Tennessee--at least in this district and Bob Corker. Rednecks are good people--we come in quite a variety and believe it or not--a variety of colors and professions. We love God and Jesus. We like our dogs, bar-b-que, music, our women and straight talkers. We don't like liars.

Huddleston has it correct.
Thu, 11/23/2006 - 11:40 ET by mikejHuddleston has it correct. I was born and raised in Tennessee and have been all over the south. Redneck is not a racist term and is worn with pride by many southern and country people who understand what hard-work is all about.
An offensive term would be white-trash.
Rednecks loud and proud
Thu, 11/23/2006 - 09:16 ET by nkviking75Maybe I watch too much CMT, but it seems to me a lot of "rednecks" identify themselves that way and are proud of it. Jeff Foxworthy has made a career out of it, and Gretchen Wilson's debut record was a huge hit where she sings "I'm a Redneck Woman". Unless you use the term in a context which makes it clear you're insulting them, it doesn't seem to me that most of these self-described rednecks would be offended by the term.

Thu, 11/23/2006 - 14:32 ET by thefirststrikeAll-
Something which we pretty much already understand, but which the liberals can't or won't try to understand is that the term "redneck" is descriptive or derogatory depending on who says it and in what context. It is the same as using the word "nigga", a derivative of the other N-word we all know. Black people use this word all the time to each other, but let a white person use it and all hell will break loose!!
I watched a video clip in JibJab.com from "Mind of Mencia" where Carlos Mencia went out and asked black people about the difference between "nigga" and "nigger". One well known rap artist whose name I do not recall said that a white person can NEVER use even the word "nigga", his logic being that there are some words that are OK for black folks but white people just shouldn't be allowed to use!!
Although I do not agree with this twisted logic, I do agree that the context in which a word is used has as much, and sometimes more, meaning than the actual word itself. The same is true for the word redneck.
I will give an example. Foxworthy and others use "redneck" in a funny way, but also as being descriptive of how they see themselves and their lifestyles. Liberals on the other hand use "redneck" the same way they use "neocon". It is clearly meant to be derogatory and indicative of the type of person one would rather avoid being in close personal contact with.
Even further proof of this is to note how often liberals will use the word "redneck" in conjunction with other negative, disparaging words. They often throw "ignorant" and "uneducated" and especially "racist" and "bigotted" into the mix, making it obvious that they view ALL "rednecks" as uneducated, ignorant, racist, bigots as well. To your average liberal, these traits are all part of the "redneck" mentality and as such are impossible to seperate from it. This makes it easier for liberals to marginalize and dismiss the "redneck's" thoughts, ideas, opinions and beliefs.

How does one evolve into a redneck?
Thu, 11/23/2006 - 14:46 ET bySomething which we pretty much already understand, but which the liberals can't or won't try to understand is that the term "redneck" is descriptive or derogatory depending on who says it and in what context.
hmmm, ive only lived more than half my life in a redneck state, but since i'm left of redneck, I'll never understand the difference between describing a race(?)therefore being racist) or just being derogatory?
Being redneck is a choice not a genetic inclination- How do I stay closeminded? How do I develop an even more affected Texas accent when my parents are wealthy yankees and I need to win more votes?
"Let's see I know that I went to an Ivy league school but I notice that other rednecks in Texas and Okiehoma say "nucular" Heck I can do that too! Maybe if I throw in a few racist slurs when the press aren't around, I'll fit right in with the other good ole boy!"

Thu, 11/23/2006 - 18:59 ET by thefirststrikeAnd as is the norm for liberals, rhayes takes one sentence...ONLY ONE SENTENCE...from my ENTIRE post, and spends all of his time responding to that! He totally disregards ANYTHING else I said.
Why? Because there is no good defense against what I said. Rhayes knows I have a very valid point and can't stand that he can't find any logical way to challenge it.
This is a typical liberal ploy which I have become increasingly familiar with during my recent forays into the blogosphere. Liberals write long, impassioned posts attacking conservatism, Republicans, and anything which we hold dear, but when pressed to defend ridiculous behavior or comments from themselves or their fellow liberals, Hollywood, or the MSM, they resort to picking out that ONE LINE, that one idea, from a post that they feel they have a tiny bit of a chance to refute, and they focus all their effort and all of their limited ability "harping" on that issue and that issue alone.
The next step will be the personal attacks, followed by or coupled with the name calling and derogatory remarks about my education or my lineage.
"...Being redneck is a choice not a genetic inclination- How do I stay closeminded? How do I develop an even more affected Texas accent when my parents are wealthy yankees and I need to win more votes? How do you know being redneck isn't genetic? Are you some world renowned geneticist? Do have some knowledge about genetics that Mendel and everyone since then doesn't?
Ironic, isn't it...liberals preach that being gay is genetic, even though they have yet to provide ANY proof of this claim, but somehow, being a redneck ISN'T genetic, as per the proclamation of rhayes, so I guess it carries the strength of the word of God. Oh wait, probably doesn't believe in God either.
And of course he managed to steer the whole thing into another [covert] rant about GW, even though I never mentioned anyone by name. Not to mention that rednecks are described as being from Texas and "Okiehoma"...I guess the name calling has already begun after all.
All the while remaining open-minded and compassionate as only a true liberal can...how do you do it rhayes? <sarcasm off>
