This one is too delicious, folks, and definitely requires drinking vessels to be placed at a safe distance (hat tip to our friend Steve Malzberg). As reported by TMZ on Monday, country singer Clay Aiken was sitting in for Regis Philbin on Friday’s “Live with Regis and Kelly.” At one point, Aiken tried to “hush” co-host Kelly Ripa by putting his hand over her mouth. Ripa wasn’t pleased, and said, “Oh that's a no-no... I don't know where your hands have been.” (Video here)
Well, TMZ is reporting that on Monday’s “The View,” Rosie O’Donnell took exception with what Ripa did, claiming that it was a homophobic remark given Aiken’s presumed sexual orientation (Video here):
“Rosie suggested that if Aiken had been a ‘straight guy, a cute guy’ or, for instance, Mario Lopez, Ripa wouldn't have made the same remark.”
Ripa wasn’t pleased: “Ripa was incensed enough to call into the show immediately, firing back that Rosie's accusation was ‘outrageous’ and ‘irresponsible’ and that Ripa made the remark last Friday because it was 'cold and flu season' and that Aiken had shaken the hands of the studio audience. Rosie wasn't buying it, and in acknowledging that she admires Ripa, said that ‘from where I sit’ as an openly gay woman, Ripa's response was homophobic.”
I don't know about you folks, but I've used that "I don't know where your hand has been" line for decades. Pretty common joke. For a comedian like Rosie O'Donnell to make an issue out of this is the height of hypocrisy.

November 21, 2006 - 14:26 ET by SmartypantsWell, of course, Ripa's comment was not homophobic. I sure wouldn't want some relative stranger shoving his hand in my face either. But I'm more than a little confused about something: Doesn't Kelly Ripa have the right to be "homophobic" if she wants? She did not deny this person access to a job or a promotion; she did not use hate language or make some kind of threat. She, in a relatively polite manner, made it clear she did not want the dude's hand in her face. What exactly is the problem with this, even if her reason is because the guy is gay? It's her body and she should have the right to decide who's hands touch it.

November 21, 2006 - 14:47 ET by Jack BauerGoth -- clearly when you see everything through the prism of being a homosexual (like O'Donnell), it's all about what that person imagines other people are thinking.
No doubt Rosie O'Donnell is always worried about what she imagines people think of her -- when in reality if people realized how little others think of them, they'd stop worrying.
Being a "committed" homosexual to her means that this trait is projected and grafted onto her persona. So she is contantly worrying about any comment and action that she in her mind perceives as a sleight to her.
It's a narcissistic personilty trait. So it never crosses her mind that a straight person could make a comment to another "gay" person without having a hidden agends.

November 21, 2006 - 17:01 ET by RightWiredI know this post will get buried, but I had this though for years:
If gays believe they are "born that way", then they have no choice but to believe in God.
Why?
The sole purpose of life, according to biologists, is propogation of the species.
The entire theroy of evolution is based upon "survival of the fittest".
Well, being gay does not make you "the fittest". (And neither does eating millions of metics tons of ho-hos.)
Evolution would not produce a animal that has no chance or desire to propogate itself; therefore, homosexuality must originate from another source.
The only other source is Creation/Intelligent Design.
Being gay and believing in evolution are mutually exclusive. Always, 100% of the time.
Put that in your cake and bake it, Rosie.

November 21, 2006 - 19:02 ET by KimberlyFWIW, Clay Aiken is a pop singer, not a country singer (though his latest song, "A Thousand Days", has a country feel).
That said, as far as I know, Aiken is still in the closet (his official position when asked about his sexuality is that "no matter what I say, people are going to make their own assumptions, so I choose not to say anything"), and I'm getting a little tired of Rosie's compulsive need to "out" celebs who aren't wearing rainbow pins and marching in Gay Pride parades. Funny how when Clay was a guest on The View a few weeks back, there were no sexual orientation questions and the girls were constantly getting touchy-feely with him, but let Kelly Ripa make one (very old joke) comment about not knowing where Clay's hand has been and suddenly she's a raging homophobe? So, I'm betting Barbara Walters dumps Rosie after the first of the year because of all the bad press she's brought to the show. Anyone care to take me up on the bet?

November 21, 2006 - 19:38 ET by mostlymoderateTelevision is such an embarrassment now. Every show has an agenda, whether it be anti-christian, pro-homosexuality, pro-illegal-immigration, etc etc.
I can't even watch a show with my father anymore without getting embarrassed (he is in his 70's). I tried to watch a CSI Miami the other night because he was in town staying with me and my wife, we turn on the tube to watch something and BAM! A girl performing an insinuated BJ on some guy. DISGUSTING!!! These are the PEOPLES airwaves.
(sorry, Rosie put me over the edge, I will stop ranting now) :o)

November 21, 2006 - 20:06 ET by mostlymoderatethanks! It's just so annoying. How lame is it for a society to base its ENTIRE EXISTENCE on sexuality? I am old enough to remember when the "I love Lucy" show had to keep separate, twin beds for Ricky and Lucy. Then over time it went to heavy kissing, to heavy petting, to heavy EVERYTHING. Now, homosexuals are wanting to force "that" into the mix. Rosi O'donnel wants to talk about vagina's and her 'love' of women.
This is what happens when there is ZERO religious/spiritual belief. You get a society that focuses on the lowest common denominator of existence (i.e. sex, dirty jokes, bodily functions...) Where are the shows on how to start a business, how to do your taxes, how to raise your children, how to get PHYSICALLY FIT (ROSIE). Thank the HEAVENS for the Internet!!!

Seriously? No thanks. Not sure that's what I'm looking for in TV entertainment.
And sex has ALWAYS been a part of society. It's more overt right now. Perhaps it'll swing back the other way some day.

November 21, 2006 - 20:57 ET by mostlymoderateMaybe. It just seems like homosexuality on television is not indicative of the percentage of homosexuals in society. But what do I know. Maybe everybody was just in the closet or something. And as for television entertainment? Whatever. No wonder some people tend to do better in society than others. Some people sit around all day watching the tube while others create fruitful lives. I can live with that.

November 21, 2006 - 21:05 ET by balboaThe homosexuality thing is a little overdone right now, and it will recede after a while.
And are you implying I'm "some people"? [gasp] I assure you my life is quite fruitful. I had a banana just the other day.
lol
November 21, 2006 - 21:26 ET by mostlymoderateROFL...no, not you Balboa. I have been reading these posts for months and wasn't referring to you. My life is quite fruitful too, I had an orange this morning before work. :0)
I guess eventually we all just snap one day and realize we are living with a liberally infested media and maybe THAT might have something to do with society's problems. For example, did Rosie O'donnel ever wonder if she CREATES more homophobes by acting the way she does? With Rosie O'Donnel compaining about being offended, now she knows how I feel when I turn the T.V. on, period.
It's quite possible that Rosi
November 21, 2006 - 21:31 ET by balboaIt's quite possible that Rosie isn't helping her lifestyle. But then maybe people can dislike her simply because she's annoying, not because she's playing for the other team.

Ok, the discussion is TV and sex and the gay thing, and then we have the be fruitful and multiply going on...and you balboa...had a BANANA....

The normal conservative guy had an orange. Ok, an orange, no problem.
Don't ask bal, I enjoyed a kumquat.

November 22, 2006 - 07:41 ET by ckc1227"Rosie wasn't buying it, and in acknowledging that she admires Ripa, said that ‘from where I sit’ as an openly gay woman, Ripa's response was homophobic.”
I think you meant "from where I sit as an openly clueless woman", didn't you Rosie? Still, let's say she was right. So what? Last time I checked, Ripa's mouth belonged to Ripa, and she can decide who gets to put their hands over it and who can't.
I’m here to defend Homophob
November 21, 2006 - 21:13 ET by SpinyNormanI’m here to defend Homophobia. I mean, what the hell is wrong with being Homophobic? What a bad rap it's gotten of late. After all -- there’s certainly no law against it. In fact, I have every right to it, if I fancy it. I mean, why’s it okay to be agoraphobic, necrophobic, bacillophobic, felinophobic, insectophobic, lygophopic, or selachophobic. Is not bending over to pick up the soap in a gym shower a sign of homophobia? How about wearing latex gloves when working on a bleeding AIDS patient? Would YOU want that little freak’s hand anywhere near YOUR mouth?
Rosie’s main problem likely lies in her blatant Medorthophobia.
Give a Liberal a thought and he'll repeat it mindlessly all day. Teach a Liberal to think for himself and he'll vote Republican (or, preferably, Libertarian) for the rest of his life.

November 22, 2006 - 00:06 ET by ChemicalOperatorI dont see an issue with homophobia, gay guys make me uncomfortable. Its not something I do on purpose, but I really truely feel uncomfortable around them. I dont think that makes me a bad person.
At the same time I dont advocate violence of discrimination towards them. I believe being gay is wrong, but if they want to make that choice then so be it.
I live by the idea, you can be gay all you want, just as long as your not being gay around me.

Rosie's bigotry
November 21, 2006 - 21:43 ET by nkviking75Would Rosie have thought along these lines if not for the persistent rumors that Clay Aiken is gay? This was a real leap in "logic", if you can call it that.
The charge of bigotry is thrown around so loosely that frankly, I tend to tune it out. Ninety-nine times out of a hundred there's no bigotry involved any more. Usually the charge comes from a lib trying to discredit someone.
Good for Kelly for slapping Rosie down, figuratively speaking.

November 21, 2006 - 22:32 ET by msh1973I can totally relate to what Ripa said to Clay, I am a germaphobic too. Don't be touchin my face with your dirty hand! That saying ( I don't know where your hand as been) has been around for years. For Rosie to make that comment was indeed a reach. How juvenile of her.

What made this Clay person think he could invade anyone's personal space like that? It was disgusting.
I don't think I'd tolerate that kind of behaviour from someone I knew, much less a stranger. Ripa should have kicked the legs out from under his stool.
As to Rosie O....the woman is beneath contempt for her supposed liberal loviliness....all the while having the heart of an adder. She is truly a snake.
I wish she and Olby would be relegated to the Newsbusters dustbin. I, for one, am tired of them both.

November 22, 2006 - 00:05 ET by SvenTo take another angle on this; I was really surprised Ripa felt a need to show Gay people: "Hey, I'm not a homophobe...I'm not homophobe!"
But I guess I can't be too surprised. After all, Ripa does work in an industry that considers Gays an endangered species of sorts.
Why people fear what Gay people think I'll never understand?

Once again, blame Barbara Walters
November 22, 2006 - 08:22 ET by Guy Arthur ThomasThe existence of O'D on The View is because of Barbara Walters. Remember, Walters comes out stunned about Mel Gibson and so offended that she says she will never watch another Mel Gibson program or movie again yet...she hires one of the most racist, bigotted, hatemongering personalities in Hollywood who lives to throw feces in the face of anyone who disagrees with her, The O'D herself. Does Walters says anything in disgust when she attacks the Christian Church, Catholic, Protestant and in between? When she attacks Jews? When she attacks America, when she attacks heterosexuals, when she defends murderous terrorist? No, Walters is the villan here and deliberately so. She knows what she was getting with O'D. But O'D won't last and eventually will, like all extremists and uncontrollable hedonists, not be able to regulate herself because boundaries are the enemy in life to O'D and authority is to be pi$$ed on so, in her lust for attention and fascist dominance of the world around her she will get more and more extreme until finally the network will tell almost 80 Barbara Walters she is going to have to get a new attack dog.
Shame on Walters for using her public acceptance to thrust such degeneration on viewers. Walters is just the degenerate O'D is but Walters hides behind her puppet. Barbara Walters you are disgusting.
