CNN's Velshi: Everybody Loves to Hate Wal-Mart

Photo of Ken Shepherd.

Wal-Mart, according to CNN's Ali Velshi, is the store "everybody kinda loves to hate."

Well, yeah, Ali, maybe to the liberal journos you lunch and have cocktails with who probably last set foot in a Wal-Mart sometime back in grad school.

See the story here. Looking forward to your feedback.

Oh, one more thing, the idea of politicians beating up on Wal-Mart for political gain didn't poll that well before the election.

I haven't done a survey, but

I haven't done a survey, but I'd guess most of the manufactured goods requiring low to medium levels of human workmanship are coming from China - as at most any major retailer in the 1st world. That's even the case in Japan as well if you go take a look.

That's because China has a huge supply of low skilled, very low cost labor. Those aren't the jobs we should care to keep for Americans anyway. The low and middle skill chores will be going to robots in the next couple of decades. There is literally no future in them. Americans are better off not counting on many low skill jobs being available, because they'll really all be gone in our lifetime.

China also has a large and rapidly growing supply of highly skilled labor - that's something for America to be worried about.

Let's put it this way, the on

Let's put it this way, the only real high skilled workers we are in competition with is Europe and Japan, how's that working for them?  Because of the weakness of the dollar in relation to the Euro and Yen, we have the economic advantage.  From the Global Capitalist perspective, China, India, Mexico and others taking the low skilled jobs is a small price to pay for global prosperity.  As these economies mature, just like the Japanese economy did in the 60s & 70s, they in turn will outsource to the next level of poor countries.  As long as the US continues with it's version of Capitalism as opposed to European Socialism, the US will continue to be the world's economic engine and we in turn will continue to benefit from a high standard of living.  This is a win/win scenerio for everyone involved.  What this does mean for the individual US citizen is they must take the responsibility to educate themselves and have skills that are valued in the market place, in old fashioned talk that's called opportunity.

"love to hate"

Tell this to people struggling at the low end who have Wal-Mart to bargain for them with all the big suppliers so they can stretch precious dollars.

Wal-Mart is nothing but a success story, a global success. First it goes toe-to- toe with P&G, food suppliers, etc. for best wholesale prices, then wrings out inefficiencies in distribution, then offers all the basic for families under one roof so people who have smaller incomes can even save gas. Allowing the little guy to stretch an extra dollar is everything, especially at Christmas time.

If this was a European or Asian company, the MSM would be falling all over the company as a model for efficiency. Touting its influence on productivity gains and pointing at American (capital "A") retailers as inefficient, gouging, capitalist, fat cats.

The USSR version of Walmart was called GUM.  LOL   Weren't the libs all agog over that?

Allowing the little guy to stretch an extra dollar is everything, especially at Christmas time.

The irony of all of this is that Wal-Mart is providing better for these people than the government can. The dems only mission in defeating Wal-Mart is to reestablish control. The new $4 generic plan will prove to be yet another mountain for the dems to conquer.

Aside from this, which is good reading, I like to tell people to go to their nearest Wal Mart and look around at what they've done to 'destroy' the neighborhood. Fast food of various types is always doing booming business in the area, but one can't expect Wal Mart to try and take over that, so let's look across the street. At every Wal Mart I've ever seen, there always seems to be an Interstate Battery store across the street. Batteries are something Wal Mart could (and does!) sell at low prices, but somehow this small competing specialty store thrives while seemingly deliberatly locating stores right near the evil goliath. Why, it's almost as if businesses which do something very well can not only compete successfully with Wal Mart, but do it practically right in their freakin' shadow. How utterly strange....Or would that be so normal nobody ever considers it except people like me? ;) Hell, I've seriously considered just telecommuting, moving to an apartment near "my" Wal Mart (which is also near the local poker-room) and getting-rid of my car because I'd almost never need it! :)

You got it there sarc.  It's all about the foot traffic in retail, in this case Location, location, location means being next to the Walmart.  Near my Super-Walmart there is a Payless Shoe store, Wendy's (McDs inside the Walmart), Ruby Tuesdays, Barbeque place across the street, gas station/mini-mart across the street (despite the Walmart supported Murphy Station) and a CVS and Publix supermarket just down the road.  They have been there for years.

Hmmm, I wonder what the problem with those mom and pop stores going out of business were, could it be they were overcharging people????

Not just overcharging. When I have an idiotic idea which requires basic hardware materials at 3AM, I can now hop in the car & soon-after experience the total weirdness of our Super Wal Mart late at night (which almost-matches the latenight weirdness legend -- IHOP!) and damn-well get what I want when I want it. By dawn, I might have reconsidered manufacturing something like the planet's finest 'tatercannon, anyway, and we wouldn't want that!!!

Blonde, the best, by far, is the ancient Faberge' brand, "Aqua Net" -- NOT the new version of same now sold (which actually contains -- ugh! -- water in the ingredients-list, imagine that!). They made a reformulated version after their lawyers got to them and told them they could no longer dispose of New Jersey's volatile toxic wastes by cramming 'em into cans of hairspray so cheap it's only used by prostitutes & tatershooters. And by the way, White Rain, Suave, WD-40, Raid, and especially plain old Right Guard all work ok (but I still have plenty of old Aqua Net). To make a truly accurate tatercannon, you'll need to go here for your barrel. Joel is the man, so be good to him if you contact him. It's most fun to fire them at night.

I wouldn't mourn the loss, either.

We have gas stations near each traffic light in our town. Therefore, wherever there are traffic lights there must be a gas station (or vice versa) . This is all because the big oil companies (in collusion with the federal/state/local government) want us to stop at lights and waste gas and then realize while there we need gas and buy more of it.

One group did a study on the effects of Wal-Mart entering an area, and it seems that while it does drive the wages down, it drives the cost of living down even more. So the net result is most people end up with more disposable income.

And Wal-Mart around here is like fertalizer. Ours is surrounded by eating places (fast and not so fast food), specialty stores such as EB Games and Radio Shack, Tractor Supply, Home Depot, AND Lowes. There are also stores you would think would be in direct competition with Wal-Mart such as Kohl's and other clothing stores. And to top that off a 20 screen theater is due soon. Heck, every time I go there it seems there is another area of construction with another business taking root. Heck, they even put up a fairly good sized hotel across the street from the Wal-Mart just this year.

n2...I am looking forward to that theater being done. Tired of Crossroads Regal, tho it is ok. When I moved into the area, they built that sams club they just tore down. Before Wal-Mart, Moore was a very small place, now it boosts more than 30000 population, growing very fast, lots of new businesses have come in with wal mart. My twin daughters worked at the wal mart, and my oldest son worked there while in HS. Folks that have it in for wal mart just havent looked at the good they have done.

On education levels, income levels and Wal-Mart

Unsane,I also have a bachelor

Unsane,

I also have a bachelor's and a well-paying job.  I go to Wal-Mart for the everyday essentials for the house (toilet paper, cleaning supplies, etc.).  It is an experience in the human race.  A saying where I work is if you ever feel bad about yourself, go to the (town deleted) Wal-Mart.  You'll feel better in no time.

That being said, I also shop there because I am in a union.  We get the weekly Labor Tribune which rails against Wal-Mart in every issue.  If the evil Repubicans aren't on the cover, Wal-Mart is.  The union mentality drives me nuts, so shopping there is my little protest.  Besides, they have pretty good prices and the location is convenient.

They are an anchor store in a strip mall with many other shops.  The smaller, niche-type stores have been in and out, but most have stayed.

Walmart impact in my area (about 25,000 in county)

1) Teamed with HomeDepot and Lowes and local skilled crafts to build a dozen habitat for humanity homes each summer

2) Doubled the staff volunteers at the Association for Retarded Citizens to allow serving more clients and have graduated over 2 dozen clients who are employed at Walmart doing tasks they are suited to do and gaining self worth.

3) Trippled the size and effectiveness of projects like meals on wheels and other senior programs

4) Funded a grant to double the size of the country public library and opened 3 rural branches

5) Paid impact fees to allow a new water supply wellfield which we desperately needed, plus also funded a country sewer plant which is gradually replacing septic tanks as piping infrastructure is built.

6) Enabled construction and manning of a new volunteer fire department station to provide additional coverage with better response time.

7) It's volunteers have enabled tripple the number of youth sports leagues with more coaches, equipment donations etc

8) Many public cleanup projects and beautification projects as well as necessary conversions of house/appartment access modifications for handicapped citizens.

The store everybody loves to hate?  Well, now there's this story ----

John Edwards --- an outspoken critic of Wal-Mart's employment policies and practices --- admits that one of his staff members was dispatched to Wal-Mart to buy a Playstation 3 for the Edwards family

Yep. That's right.  I guess sending your hired help to buy things for you doesn't violate your principles.  Reminds me of Nancy Pelosi championing labor unions while the businesses she owns won't let employees unionize.

Not to defend Edwards, but

Not to defend Edwards, but he claims that he didn't send the volunteer ("the kid" as Edwards called him). Anyway, it's still completely hysterical...you would think that a volunteer for any politician would listen to and read every single thing that came out of that politician's mouth--especially the most recent words. Not this volunteer. He (gender assumed) was so eager to be the guy that "delivered" on this request and ensure he would get a paying position or at the very least personal recognition from Edwards, he just ran out and used the boss's name and reputation without authorization to get the very special treatment that Democrats everywhere preach is unfair and evil (with the exception of Affirmative Action...er, 'actions'). Totally funny!

This arrogance is sickening. John Edwards is a phony fool

"Edwards, the Democrats' vice presidential
candidate in 2004, spoke Wednesday to supporters of union-backed
WakeUpWalMart.com on a conference call launching the group's holiday
season campaign to pressure Wal-Mart for better labor standards.

In the call, he repeated a story about his son Jack disapproving of a
classmate buying sneakers at Wal-Mart. "If a 6-year-old can figure it

All the 6-year-old is doing i

All the 6-year-old is doing is parroting his father's words and arrogance. Heck, my 3-year-old already repeats what I say. The other day I was frustrated and told my daughter "pick up your damn shoes and put them away!" She picked them up and put them away, then came back and reported, "I picked up my damn shoes!"

Come to think of it, I find it hard to believe that John Edwards' 6-year-old attends a school where "commoners" that shop at Walmart also attend. Another thing that bothers me about Edwards' arrogance is that his statement "If a 6-year-old can figure it out, America can definitely figure this out" implies that I (and a majority of Americans from sea to shing sea) am less intelligent than his 6-year-old son because I lack disdain for Walmart and I shop there at least 4 times a week.

Wallmart is an American succe

Wallmart is an American success story.  Unions are successful when management forgets the employees--generally listening to them.  Edwards and the socialists would force an entity on the employees if they could--dues to union coffers to elect more socialists.  I've never seen a union add sales or contribute to the bottom line of a company.

They've been pretty effective in taking away from the bottom line and forcing bankrupsty or a move overseas, south of the border.

Edward's "little guy" includes the union employees who are provided a car, expenses and 90K plus a year to represent a region.  They're called international reps.  Their supervisors make even more.
