So House Democrats have resoundingly rejected anti-war Congressman John Murtha as their next Majority Leader, not the best news for his patron Nancy Pelosi. (For details, everybody but Larry King can click here.) But as an MRC Media Reality Check pointed out earlier this week, a secret ballot by network reporters might have led to a very different result.
Murtha has been a liberal media darling since he demanded retreat without victory in Iraq almost exactly one year ago, on November 17, 2005. ABC, CBS and NBC that night all led by touting Murtha’s credentials. “John Murtha is not a household name, but on military matters, no Democrat in Congress is more influential,” CBS’s Bob Schieffer gushed.
The next night, CNN’s Bill Schneider awarded Murtha his “Political Play of the Week,” likening his call for withdrawal to Walter Cronkite’s 1968 anti-Vietnam War commentary. The media’s bias became even more obvious when another top Democrat, Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman, wrote a November 29 Wall Street Journal op-ed saying the troops should stay: "What a colossal mistake it would be for America's bipartisan political leadership to choose this moment in history to lose its will and, in the famous phrase, to seize defeat from the jaws of the coming victory." The same networks that led with Murtha’s defeatist rhetoric two weeks earlier said nothing about Lieberman.
What did Murtha have that Lieberman did not? The rhetoric that liberals liked to hear.
After that, Murtha could do no wrong. On May 17, he convened a press conference to claim U.S. Marines in Haditha had "killed civilians in cold blood." Instead of pressing him to justify the inflammatory charge, the networks followed Murtha’s cue and began an anti-military feeding frenzy. Over the next three weeks, ABC, CBS and NBC aired 99 stories suggesting U.S. military misconduct. ABC Nightline host Terry Moran darkly suggested a comparison to the notorious My Lai massacre: "Will Haditha be the My Lai of the Middle East?"
Just five days after his "killed in cold blood" smear, Katie Couric (then with NBC) was happy to laud Murtha for being honored by the Kennedy family as a "Profile in Courage." Murtha, Couric chirped, "definitely" fit the definition of courage, which she read to her Today audience: "Mental or moral strength enabling one to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty firmly or resolutely."
Just this Monday, Couric hosted candidate Murtha on her CBS Evening News. Reminding Murtha of his call for retreat, Couric set him up as a victim: "There was hell to pay, though, Congressman, for what you said. You were called a ‘defeatocrat, a ‘liberal turncoat.’"
But every step of the way, Couric and the rest of the liberal media were defending and admiring Murtha’s cut-and-run prescription.

Last night, PBS & NBC Both Ignored Fight for Dem Majority Slot
November 16, 2006 - 13:56 ET by daveinbocaJust after PBS and NBC news last night ran Lott's oops, McConnell's selection as the new Senate Repub Leader [both ran the same tape of Lott making Sen. Strom T's birthday party gaffe], the two Democrat Party lackeys ran a piece on Pelosi with nary a peep concerning the blood and guts gutter fight between Hoyer and media-darling pork-king Murtha.
Not a word, from taxpayer-paid TV news to private-sector TV news, not a bit of difference between them. Did anyone see anything on ABC? [CBS is again prisoner of its bolshie bosses, so asking about Couric and her plummeting program is silly].

Hoyer beats Murtha 149 to 86.
OVER A THIRD OF THE DEMOCRATS voted for Murtha.
So guys, over a third of the democrat party are kosovites and corruptovites and moveon orgers, basically white flag surrender monkeys and far to French to be Americans.
That's how I see it.

November 16, 2006 - 18:19 ET by pocomocoHow fickle the MSM. A short while ago they were in love with McCain. But now that Congress has shifted to the Democrats, they bid McCain a fond farewell, and bring Murtha into their bed. Apparently, Murtha gives better sound-bites than McCain.

Did We Miss an Opportunity With Murtha?
November 16, 2006 - 19:42 ET by Howard NemerovI was hoping he would win, and here is why. First Murtha is historically supportive of gun rights. This may have provided some counterbalance to Pelosi, who supports civilian disarmament. But more important is a longer-term goal, which is to destroy the Democrat party. (Do they even need the help?) You see, Murtha would be Pelosi's candidate, and with his murky record, this would reflect on Pelosi and taint her speakership in the public eye. I believe having Murtha as majority leader would have benefitted us in 2008. Now we have to hope that Hoyer and Pelosi cook up some anti-gun scam to really get people worked up, which will also benefit us, as this election was not about gun control, except for a fringe few in the Brady camp.
I disagree. First there ar
November 16, 2006 - 20:08 ET by Conservative VoiceI disagree. First there are plenty of Democrats who are supportive of gun rights (and some republicans who are for gun bans). Second, it wouldn't reflect on Pelosi for two big reasons. Most Americans do not follow politics that closely, and Pelosi has the media. Last, Murtha is dangerous, I am not about who wins elections (party wise) I am about hoping the people in power do the right thing. The irony would be the liberals get miffed at the Democrats like conservatives did with republicans, and it becomes freaky friday and we both switch. We need people who understand how serious we need to take Iran and the war on terror.

If you notice it's ALL conjecture on everyones part, including the conservative talk shows. No one gets it when you are talking about people in our Federal Government and it is on grand display for all to see in 3D, dumb A$$'s!
