Will the Press Ignore Wendy Davis's Truth-Free Twitter and Blog Meltdown (Or Even Cheer It On)?

January 21st, 2014 8:07 PM

Wow, I'd better get this post done quickly, because Texas Democratic gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis has been tweeting up a storm and has posted "an open letter" at her web site. If I blink, I might miss a half-dozen more tweets.

Davis apparently thinks that if she accuses Republican candidate Greg Abbott and his campaign of being behind the Sunday Dallas Morning News story which poked gaping holes in her picture-perfect bio often enough, it will somehow become true. It won't. Wayne Slater, the DMN reporter who authored the story, has tweeted that "I talked to no - zero - Abbott people." But sadly, in the current establishment media environment, the in-your-face "poor little girl fights back against bullies" tactic might work. A pic of the eight tweets from three hours ago and excerpts from her "open letter" follow the jump.

First, the tweets:

Four of the eight (!) tweets directly or indirectly accuse her "opponents" or "Greg Abbott and his allies" of being behind the story. That dog won't hunt, ma'am, no matter how hard you kick it.

She also twice points to the difficulty of her "struggle" when she's runnning against a guy who is confined to a wheelchair, including one direct shot at Abbott & Co. because "they don’t understand these Texas stories of struggle."

Here's part of the "open letter":

Dear Friend,

As our campaign has gained momentum, our opponents have gotten more and more desperate. But now they’ve stooped to a new low by attacking my family, my education, and my personal story – playing politics with the journey that has been my life. Mine is a story about a teenage single mother who struggled to keep her young family afloat. It’s a story about a young woman who was given a precious opportunity to work her way up in the world. It’s a story about resiliency, and sacrifice, and perseverance.

And you’re damn right it’s a true story.

Throughout this campaign, I’ve shared that story – not because it’s unique, but because it isn’t.

The story of my life is also the story of millions of single mothers who feel alone in the world, millions of young dreamers searching for their chance to become something more than what they were born into, millions of families all across Texas who would sacrifice everything to give their children a better future.

It’s those stories – your stories – that drive my campaign. But Greg Abbott and his allies don’t want to hear them.

Dear Wendy, you're the one who shaded the truth and made whatever valid nuggets might be hiding in there impossible to appreciate.

Continuing:

The only thing Greg Abbott and his allies have proved with these desperate attacks is that they don’t understand what it means to live a life like mine – a life like that of so many people all across our state.

They don’t know me – and, what’s more important, they don’t know you.

Geez, it just goes on and on and on and on.

She can go on for the next 100 years and it won't change the fact that she made this bed, and she deserves to sleep in it.

Will the press really let this meltdown slide by without notice – or even worse, cheer it on as some kind of twisted example of "courage"?
