Tom Brokaw on 9/11: We Need to Promote America 'Without Using Guns or Drones'

In a somber article remembering 9/11 for the Sunday newspaper supplement Parade, former NBC anchorman Tom Brokaw has one mysterious paragraph that seems to suggest that wars and drone attacks are all wrong:

We're still armed and on the ground in two Muslim nations where we've fought for much of the past 10 years, but we still have not extinguished the rage of extremists. We need to be more effective in promoting the American ideal without using guns or drones.

If Brokaw means that the American ideal is best promoted in humanitarian work or democracy promotion or economic assistance, that's quite reasonable. But he seems to be writing that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan never solved the problem of Islamic extremism, but only made them worse. It could even be implied that the current use of drones in the War on Terror is wrong in Brokaw's eyes.
