Muslim Group Loses Muhammed Cartoon Libel Case

What a difference a year makes. The publishing of Muhammed cartoons in the Danish newspaper Jyllends-Posten caused an uproar among Muslims worldwide last year. Despite the newsworthiness of the cartoons as they related to the unfolding story of violent riots throughout Europe and the Middle East, many news outlets reporting on the story refused to publish or show the cartoons out of, um, respect for Muslim sensibilities.

Now, the outcome of a lawsuit resulting from the fracas is left floating somewhere in a media backwater, as journalists seek more lucrative prey. A Muslim group based in Denmark that filed a libel lawsuit against a Danish political party leader has lost. They sued because Pia Kjaersgaard, leader of the Danish People's Party (DPP), accused some members of the Islamic Faith Community of treason for traveling to the Middle East in order to publicize the drawings, thus fanning the flames of violent dissent. The court found the term "treason" non-libelous "because it was used extensively in public debate."

One wonders if the story would receive more publicity had the Islamic Faith Community won its case.

This interesting little nugget is buried near the bottom of the story:

"We are very disappointed with the verdict and are considering an appeal," said Kasem Ahmad, a spokesman for the Muslim group. He added that the group would issue a fatwa, or religious edict, against Jyllands-Posten if it did not receive an apology from the paper.

"It's too early to say any details of the fatwa," Ahmad said. "The fatwa is the last step and will also satisfy Muslims in the Middle East."

With their commitment to freedom of speech and freedom of the press, will fellow journalists rally to the aid of Jyllends-Posten if a fatwah is issued? Or will they ignore it out of fear of retribution by radical Muslims...I mean, respect for the Islamic faith?

I have a fatwa for them...

I have a fatwa for the Muslims (please someone, introduce me to a Muslim that isn't radical either actively or complicitly)...a big fat wa...they can kiss! Good for Jyllends-Posten!

Shut up and blog! If you claim to be a conservative, please don't disgrace yourself and conservatism by thinking and arguing like a liberal. Go Rudy!

The MSM is really going to be

The MSM is really going to be struggling with this one, and it's because they have long since abandoned any sense of objectivity as reporters of the news, and instead now actively try to influence the news. Their long list of contradictions, kowtowing, and political correctness comes home to rooste in this case. The shifting winds will be hard for them to guage sentiment, so they will be condemned to issuing conflicting and confusing statements for quite a while. LOL.

Oh dear, The Muslims are goin

Oh dear,

The Muslims are going to angry now.

Whatever shall we do?

Danes...

This is a great result. They win in court, & the violent reaction of the radical muslims was exactly what was being pointed out in the cartoons. It's only normal to threaten to kill those people who point out that you are intollerent of the thoughts & ideas don't agree with yours.

This was also why I bought a Skagen watch, I had been looking into buying one for a couple of years, the reaction the Danes recieved gave me an excuse to support them in my little way. It also makes me feel better about playing with Legos as a kid. Both Skagen & Lego are Danish. The controversy may have died down, but if you don't/can't buy America, at least buy form nations that are friendly with us. I do that whenever I can, it's something to remember.

Finally, some sense of logic

Finally, some sense of logic prevails, for how long I don't know.
