Stossel Responds to Kennedy's Attacks, Lists False Scares Environmentalists Pushed

By Brad Wilmouth | July 12, 2007 - 00:04 ET

On Wednesday's Your World with Neil Cavuto, FNC's Cavuto hosted both ABC's John Stossel and environmentalist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to discuss Kennedy's charge, from the stage of Saturday's "Live Earth" concert in New Jersey, that the ABC anchor, as well as Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, have been "lying" about global warming and are "toadies" for corporations.

Stossel charged that some of Kennedy's comments about the environment are "silly" and brought up a number of big scares that have been promoted in recent years, some by environmentalists, that have turned out not to materialize. Asked by Cavuto if ignoring the issue may make it worse, Stossel responded: "Well, it's possible. And it's possible that the killer bees were going to come up and sting us all to death, and that Y2K was going to crash all the planes, and that the pesticides that his organization [Natural Resources Defense Council] is so upset about were causing the cancer epidemic, and the frog testicles were shrinking, were going to make us all sterile. The scares from the environmental groups have just come one after the other. None has been true."

Transcript follows. Ian Schwartz has the video.

Stossel expressed his unwillingness to let Kennedy restrict the use of air conditioning or "tell poor people they can't have a car," and contended that Kennedy's recommendation that changing light bulbs would help fight global warming was "silly." Stossel: "But to call me a flat-earther because I'm saying we shouldn't turn our freedom and our choices over to Robert Kennedy so he can run our lives and tell us when we can have air conditioning or tell poor people they can't have a car is a bit much. Clearly, there is global warming. Climate changes. The earth has been warming. Is it all our fault? Is changing a light bulb going to make any difference? Some of what he says, I think, is silly." The ABC correspondent later alluded to global warming that happened in Earth's past before the time of the Industrial Revolution as he mentioned that Greenland "was called Greenland for a reason."

Below is a transcript of the segment that featured both Stossel and Kennedy from the Wednesday July 11 Your World with Neil Cavuto:

After interviewing Kennedy alone, Cavuto brought aboard Stossel and read Kennedy's recent comments accusing him of "lying."

NEIL CAVUTO: John, your response.

JOHN STOSSEL: Well, what can you say? I suppose he calls me a corporate toady because I'm a consumer reporter who now defends corporations because I've found, by and large, they do good things for Americans. But to call me a flat-earther because I'm saying we shouldn't turn our freedom and our choices over to Robert Kennedy so he can run our lives and tell us when we can have air conditioning or tell poor people they can't have a car is a bit much. Clearly, there is global warming. Climate changes. The earth has been warming. Is it all our fault? Is changing a light bulb going to make any difference? Some of what he says, I think, is silly. I invite you to debate me about this, to come on 20/20 and talk about it. I'd love to have you.

CAVUTO: All right, for now, Robert, what did you mean to say, that John is "lying" to people?

ROBERT F. KENNEDY JR.: Yes, absolutely. Lying and lying repeatedly. First of all, the, everything we need to do, the science on global warming is settled, 2500 scientists and the IPPC report, the top meteorologists and climate scientists from around the world have announced the global consensus that global warming exists, that we are causing it, and that its impacts are going to be catastrophic. You don't need that science, though. All you need to do is walk outside. I just came back from the Arctic. The Arctic is melting. It is catastrophic. The good news is that everything that we need to do to solve global warming are things we ought to be doing anyway for the sake of America's prosperity, for our national security, for our economic independence.

CAVUTO: All right, so, John, what do you think of that? By ignoring this, you're making the problem worse. What do you think?

STOSSEL: Well, it's possible. And it's possible that the killer bees were going to come up and sting us all to death, and that Y2K was going to crash all the planes, and that the pesticides that his organization is so upset about were causing the cancer epidemic, and the frog testicles were shrinking, were going to make us all sterile. The scares from the environmental groups have just come one after the other. None has been true. It's possible that this one will be true, but it is just not true to say there is a scientific consensus that global warming will be a catastrophe. It's probably far better to wait, see what happens, these models have not been that good at predicting the future, many scientists disagree with them despite what Mr. Kennedy says. Let's see what happens. Don't make the country poor.

CAVUTO: All right, well, Robert, what do you think of that? Is it wise, on your part, if someone disagrees with you, Robert, to go after their advertisers, to essentially shut John up?

STOSSEL: Sure, that's free speech. He should be able to do that. That's the American way.

CAVUTO: All right, but go ahead, Robert. Go ahead.

KENNEDY: Absolutely, I think, I mean, you know, the air waves are owned by the public. The airwaves are licensed to the broadcasters, but the broadcasters are obligated to use those airwaves primarily to promote the public interest and to advance our democracy. If you are lying to people about science, about the impact of things like global warming, it's something that you should be challenged on. And the advertisers, of course, should be questioned about that.

CAVUTO: Would you apply the same, John, to Robert Kennedy in any venue he appeared on? Would you urge your listeners or viewers to boycott advertisers in which he's featured.

STOSSEL: No, that's not the way I would do it. I would just argue with him. I mean, this is a man who also said that there's no doubt that mercury in vaccines have poisoned an entire generation. I think he's just silly about a lot of things, including this.

CAVUTO: Robert?

KENNEDY: You know, to go back to the global warming issue, global warming, to say that we should wait and see what's happening, it's already happening. I would urge John Stossel to go to Alaska, go to Glacier National Park, where I visited this summer, where there were 127 glaciers at the beginning of the century. There are 17 left now. On every continent, the glaciers and every mountain range on Earth, the glaciers are now receding.

CAVUTO: So you say we ignore this at our peril. John, you just think it's strong-arming to make us accept that.

STOSSEL: Climate changes. Greenland was once called Greenland for a reason. It's not, that doesn't prove that man's doing it and that our not driving a car, and, heck, I live in an apartment and ride my bike to work. I'm his environmental role model, but it's not going to make any difference.

This idiot is obviously referring to Stossel, but doesn't realize how much of a jerk he sounds like because he just indicted himself.

Stupid

Have you ever noticed:

1. How good lefties look when paired up with a couple of other lefty panelists against one Conservative on ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC and CNN with a leftist (as always) moderator, lobbing softballs to the leftists, spitballs to the Conservative?

2. How stupid and ridiculous they look when matched one on one on Fox with a fair and balanced moderator? No wonder they fear Fox.

3. Lefties have good reason to fear going on Fox because I have NEVER seen them win an argument when placed on a level playing field.

4. Most of the time, the MSM claims they are representing the Conservatives by having on some Rino or some turncoat like David Gergen. Gergen sure fools me by combing those three 12 foot long strands of hair in 23 circles around the top of his head. By the way, who but the MSM ever told this idiot that he is an accepted, by the public, expert on anything?

By the way, did you see David Horowitz getting the aforementioned treatment on CNN last night? He is, in my opinion, the most articulate spokesman for Conservatism alive today. They had him 3 to 1, talking and laughing over anything he tried to say, with the help of that lefty moderator Paula Zahn. What a leftist witch (I'm being polite).

What a disgrace disguised as news. Every Conservative should IMMEDIATELY refuse to appear on any network except FOX. Within a month the entire MSM would be history. Unfortunately, we don't have the spine and never will.

Well said and thanks for the

Well said and thanks for the laugh!  David Gergen's 12 foot  strands in 23 circles!  Too bad the rest of what you've discussed can't be laughed off at all. The bullying of conservative people and ideas continues unabated.

Anyone who says they support the troops but not the mission is a liar.

Mr. Kennedy, you are unremark

Mr. Kennedy, you are unremarkable.

You've had opportunities, wealth, and position (rightly or wrongly) that only a relative handful of people on this planet will ever know.  And instead of understanding and living up to the responsibilities that accompany such blessings, what do you do?  You waste them, and regurgitate the same anthropogenic global warming nonsense any garden-variety reactionary would spit out.

Nothing is "settled," there is no "global consensus," and wishing does not make it so.  As a matter of fact, there's an increasingly vigorous debate on questions fundamental to the issue, such as this one: Since we have no way of knowing how the environment of today would be without our presence, how in the world can anyone presume to know how much (if any) warming is caused by human behavior?

You mentioned, Mr. Kennedy, that you'd recently visited Glacier National Park.  Marvelous.  How did you get there?  I'm shocked that Mr. Cavuto didn't ask you that question--perhaps someone will do so the next time you're interviewed.  Did you travel in a commercial turbo-prop?  Solar-powered bus?  Hybrid snowplow?  Or were there private jets and chauffeured vehicles involved?

Not only are you disappointingly unremarkable, Mr. Kennedy, at last report we have yet to see you on the barricades.  Perhaps later?

Bobby Kennedy as part of a his plea arrangement for heroin did community service in 1984. The community service was for the Hudson Riverkeeper, which was an organization started by Hudson River fishermen (many of them former Marines and War Vets) Sports Illustrated Outdoor Editor Robert Boyle. Their mission was to get corporate and government entities to clean up the heavily polluted Hudson so that it could be used for fishing and recreation.

Over the years, Kennedy saw it as his opportunity for a political base and a tool for any political and power aspirations he had. That included hijacking the organization and pushing aside its founders and bringing in his own people.

Bob is an autocrat and the final straw for Bob Boyle and these people was the following:

While the glaciers in Alaska

While the glaciers in Alaska may have been melting, the ice in Antarctica have increased by 45 gigatonnes.  Recent articles have indicated that Greenland's interior ice is increasing.  The glacier on Kilamanjaro has been melting for a while.  Glaciologists have determined that the reason was not global warming, but deforestation at the base of the mountain resulting in less humid air reaching the peak, thereby reducing the amount of snowfall.

As for recent glacial melting being the fault of mankind, what caused them to grow in the first place?  Melting glaciers in Greenland (I believe it was) have revealed ancient mines with the tools stacked ready to use.  So, at one time, the ice cover in Greenland was less than it is today.  What caused the ice cover to grow and cover those mines?  Glaciers have been advancing and retreating for geologic ages.  Glacial retreat now proves absolutely nothing.

In the meantime, Junior, why don't you give up your car(s), plane(s), house(s), and air conditioning, so that the great unwashed don't have to give up theirs?

I'm just glad Stossel made the point about Greenland. As for "global warming," there's a place near Jacksonville called "Orange Park." Good point Sarc - they used to grow oranges in central and north central florida in the past. But it got too cold on a regular basis so the crops had to be grown further south.

Funny you should mention Oran

Funny you should mention Orange Park as that's where I live.  And here's another neat little factoid for you.  We spent the 4th of July at Kingsley Lake, which is about 20 miles south of Orange Park.  We go there every July 4th and swim around and watch the fireworks go up.  This year we had to get out of the water by 6:00PM because it had gotten so cold that our teeth were chattering.  When you looked up and down the docks, the people who were out watching the fireworks were wearing jackets or under throws or blankets.  In years past it's never, ever, been that cold.  And Memorial Day this year was so cool that most folks didn't even get in the water.

Brevard's lost most of its trees due to development.  Polk County is the largest producer in FL, and that's considered central Florida, although it's right on the line.  There's also a good bit that comes from Marion County, and they're definately central Florida.  My folks live in Ocala (which is in Marion) and they have both grapefruit and orange trees thriving on their property.

Hurray for John Stossel! I

Hurray for John Stossel! It's about time someone told Robert Kennedy that some of this stuff is just plain silly.

These rich liberals are so full of ....hypocrisy. Back in the old days, the rich would pay some poor schlub to go into the army for them. Nowadays, because they can afford it, they salve their consciences by buying "carbon offsets" and use all the energy they want. The poor schlubs who can't afford to do that can go without A/C and ride their bikes or walk to work.

Why doesn't Kennedy use some of his own money to buy some "carbon offsets" for some of his poor constituents? It's more of the "Sacrifice for thee, but not for me" mentality.

Silly Warm-monger

"Silly" was such a perfect word for Stoessel to use to describe this ridiculous Warm-monger. It categorizes RFK2's misguided train of thought as a blatant hypocrisy that he apparently cannot see... or chooses to ignore as collateral damage for what he perceives to be the greater good.

.....

I was listening to Michael Smerconish this morning talking about AGW, and he predicting at some point in the near future that an enviro-activist Hollywood actor will create a big publicity moment about moving out of a big mansion into a smaller, more eco-friendly home.

Which I really hope someone does. Because unless they proceed to dismantle that home brick by brick so that no one else can ever damage the earth with it, that person will have done exactly zero to improve the environment.

John Stossel has stood up to

John Stossel has stood up to bullies and B-S'ers for years, so he certainly wasn't going to give ground to RFK Jr.  I think the best part of the exchange was when Stossel invited Kennedy to appear with him on his show for a special Global Warming segment.  You can bet that Junior dreads such a showdown.

Was it just me, or did Junior's voice seem a little shakier after they came back from commercial break?  He seemed to be intimidated by the mere act of conversing with a man he labeled a liar.  It reminded me of a conversion between Hannity and Junior sometime ago, when Hannity asked him why average citizens are being told by Junior and company to ride bikes and trains to save the planet while Junior flies around in a private jet.  Junior looked like a deer in the headlights as he tried to deflect the conversation away from his jet.

The main reason that Gore and RFK Jr. try to shut off debate with declarations of the "science being settled," is because they can't explain the so-called science themselves.  And that's because they are not motivated by the scientific aspects of GW, but by the political.  So, if you tell me that it's been too cold to grow oranges in Jacksonville, FL for decades, I merely reply, "Look, the science is settled.  GW is a fact, and we must act immediately."

I remember the Hannity/Junior

I remember the Hannity/Junior showdown. When asked about his private jet, Junior said "I'm not going to dignify that question!", but he eventually fessed up. Typical lib mentality. How dare you question us!

The wrong Kennedys

I don't wish death on the Kennedys, because I know the media would turn them into martyrs before the undertaker put them in the casket.  We'd never hear the end of the tributes to them.  We'd be better off wishing them all to become mute and house bound.  Then they wouldn't be able to participate in politics and we'd have about 50% less corruption in the government.

Stossels point is the the key

Stossels point is the the key point that goes ignored by the environmentalist kooks like Kennedy - the Earth's climate is constatntly changing as it has for millions of years (even before suv's and light bulbs were invented) and will continue to do so as long as it exists.  People like Kennedy and Gore are opportunists.  The sheer idiocy to believe humans have a significant impact on our climate coupled with the arrogance of assuming the current climate is best and someone should dictate how we live is truly unbelieveable.

that's true...they would ha

that's true...they would have us think that the earth's climate was consistent for millions of years, and now we have caused "climate change." What arrogance.

I know that most people with

I know that most people with more than three brain cells rubbing together inside that squash atop their necks already know and agree with the following, but I feel the need, actually, the COMPULSION, to say:

If you (Goracle, Kennedy [entire family], Madonna, DiCaprio, Crow, ect.) are going to preach about the dangers to the entire planet due to Global Warming, Climate Change, or whatever the daily catch-phrase might be, then the first step towards credibility is to walk the walk. I don't care if you're rich, that's not a primary issue. HOW you got rich may be (RFK???).

No, the issue is how you live your rich lives. Jet-setting, squandering energy (big cars, big houses, etc.), while preaching for others to sacrifice life's little conveniences like cars, lights, and air-conditioning just doesn't cut it. Ranting and name-calling doesn't hold people's attention. Suppressing contrary opinions pisses people off. Sensationalizing the danger further reduces your credibility. And worst of all, CASHING IN on your "initiatives" is, to use RFK's intellectual phrase, TRAITOROUS.

You yourselves will not make the slightest effort to curtail what you tell everyone else are the reasons for Global Warming, you demand everyone below your station in life sacrifice what little (comparatively) they do have, and you are blatantly planning on raping the world community to further enrich yourselves.

All of you need a quiet corner to go sit in and color (using recycled paper and bio-degradable crayons, of course). The rest of us are getting really, really, really, really, really tired of your ranting hypocrisy.

The Closed Mind Erects Strong Barriers

First of all, the, everything

First of all, the, everything we need to do, the science on global warming is settled, 2500 scientists and the IPPC report, the top meteorologists and climate scientists from around the world have announced the global consensus that global warming exists,

This statement by RFKJR is the proof that these mushroom eaters are complete idiots. Science as a whole can never be totally considered "settled".   Science fact is just that a "fact" until we educate ourselves more and then have reason to doubt some of our own facts on certain topics.

For example:  Pluto was classified as a planet. That was science fact up to last year. The Earth being flat was science fact several millenia ago until education and reasoning caught up with logic to change the fact the earth is actually round. Even the simplest things are always changing scientifically. In the first falf of the 20th century, eggs were good for you. Then in the 60's eggs were bad for you high in cholesteral. Then in the 70's eggs were good for you again After watching Rocky Balboa down 6 raw eggs in a glass. They were now high in protein vitamins and minerals. In the 80's they were bad again egg yolks contain high degree of fat and now there is good and bad cholesteral to look out for. In the 90's somewhat good again many people switching to eating just egg whites. Will it ever be settled?

Science in its truest nature won't let itself be settled because it would close the door in advancements on subjects that become more learned as the human species progresses.

Your last point is the answer

Your last point is the answer to anything spewing out of the mouths of people like Kennedy and Gore. The Earth has always been in a constant state of evolution in terms of climate and geology. These two clowns would have people believe that we arrived at the final destination in Earth's development and it should stay that way for eternity. That is why their scremaing tirades are essentially flat-earth beliefs. In fact there will one day come a time when the Earth will not be inhabitable simply because of the life span of the Sun. Are they going to blame that on corporate toadies?

This too, shall pass.

There were 127 glaciers at the begining of the century.  There are only 17 left now.  I guess that means the climate was not around before the begining of the century?  I seem to remember that at one point glaciers advanced as far south as Kentucky, should we have a goal of returning all glaciers to their southern most point?  That would put the Kennedy's Mass. compound under the glacier, maybe that isn't such a bad idea.

At one point in the history of earth (predating the turn of the century) Kansas City was at the bottom of the ocean.  What did early man do to cause such massive "climate change" that would allow this area of the country to go from under hundreds of feet of water to produce enough food to feed the world?

Wait a minute, why am I asking a question like this, according to Kennedy the debate is over so never mind.

They except no one to have an

They except no one to have any sense of history or development. The idea that the glaciers are melting may be good. And the average global temperature warming may also be a good thing. Their arguments for why it is bad are convoluted and weak. I believe the PR hysteria of this may have peaked with this dud of a concert and it will be all downhill for Gore and Kennedy.

Just to demonstrate how inane

Just to demonstrate how inanely ridiculous these morons truly are (and how stupid they think we are), let's look at their argument about the melting ice in the world. They say that because of it, NYC will be under water in ten years. Let's try a simple little experiment:

Take a glass and fill it 3/4 with water. Drop in a large ice cube. Mark how high the water gets in the glass. Take the ice cube out. Melt the ice cube. Pour the liquid from the ice cube into the glass. How high does the water get? Same height, right?

This demonstrates an obscure principle known as "displacement". It doesn't matter if the water is frozen or liquid - it still displaces the same amount. So, taking a gazillion ton iceberg and melting it won't increase water levels in NYC by even a centimeter.

If the Goracle and cronies would speak to the dilution of salinity in the oceans, maybe they would have a small point to make (assuming anyone could predict the effects of such de-salizination).

Unfortunately, we're all idiots, the debate is settled, the concensus has been reached, don't confuse the facts with science, and so on...

That is an excellent point. Since Bobby Kennedy spent his time getting kicked out of one prep school after another he probably missed basic science classes.

Another hypocracy of these people is their belief in evolution which they do not apply to species which are becoming extinct. Ever hear of survival fo the fittest? As the climate changes some species will die out and others will survive and evolve to adapt.

Nothing ever went extinct bef

Nothing ever went extinct before the dodo bird.

Ignorance is bliss. It's easier to repeat a mindless slogan than to do some actual research.

How many prehistoric life forms are still with us and how many just went extinct rather than evolve?

Maybe if we could persuade everybody (consensus) to get rid of their air conditioning, those with the attention span of a gnat wouldn't always be so surprised when they step out of their artificially cooled, pampered environments only to discover that the great outdoors in the summer time can be da*n uncomfortable.

Reality sucks.

"Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war"  - Shakespeare

"I just came back from t

"I just came back from the Arctic. The Arctic is melting. It is catastrophic."

More chicken-little hysteria from the Democrat party. It is well-known that arctic glaciation goes through 40-year cycles of warming and cooling. This warming is similar to the one that occured between 1920 and 1950. These cycles have been known by scientists the world over for decades. The left understands this too but they're more interested in exploiting this natural, cyclical trend for their own political ends. There is much data on the warming/cooling cycles of the arctic region but the MSM who are zelously in the tank for AGW theories, would never allow such a fact --- or any theories to the contrary for that matter -- to become public knowledge - not if they can help it. You never hear the slightest mention of the "Medieval Warm Peroid", a vital piece of information which was simply deleted in the 2001 UN climate report. This is why Kennedy and others like him on the extreme left get so fanatically angry and make ludicrous accusations at anyone who dares to even question the validity of the AGW orthodoxy. There is so much contrarian data to be found just about everywhere (i.e. bookstores, libraries, newsletters, the internet, talk-radio, think-tanks) that have made very effective and persuasive arguments against the idea that were all doomed to catastrophic climactic chage.  The left hates this -- that the common citizen has access to materials that don't agree or comply with their political agenda -- and there's basically nothing they can do about it which is what drives them nuts. Alternative information exists just about everywhere and they are powerless to stop it. They prefer no public input -- something on the order of Hillary's Healthcare taskforce -- no public input, no reporting of what goes on on the inside, complete secrecy. Then go public with the "findings" and put the agenda on a fast-track  to legislation and forced public compliance. Freedom of Information is only good when the information agrees with your political agenda.

...the science on global wa

...the science on global warming is settled, 2500 scientists and the IPPC report, the top meteorologists and climate scientists from around the world have announced the global consensus that global warming exists, that we are causing it, and that its impacts are going to be catastrophic.

I find it hysterical that Kennedy used a statement like this to defend him calling Stossel, Limbaugh & Hannity et al "flat earthers". Of all the insults he could have used, that's acutally the dumbest one.

See, when I took history, we went further back than 1992, and I clearly remember that there was a period in human history when a people were saying things like this:

...the science on the shape of the Earth is settled; top geographic scientists from around the known world have announced the global consensus that earth is flat, that God made it flat, and that the impact of sailing a ship over the edge of it is going to be catastrophic.

Just because a majority of people believe something is so doesn't make it so. We could have a vote tomorrow to repeal the law of gravity, but you won't catch me walking off the edge of the Grand Canyon just because a majority of people say that I can now safely do so...

The fact that Robert Kennedy

The fact that Robert Kennedy is publicly calling people liars about their AGW dissent speaks to the despiration of the AGW crowd.  They see the tide turning on their scam, I mean pet assertion, so this has become the imperitive, the final push to silence the critics or the whole thing goes belly up.  With each passing week of scientists are coming out to denounce AGW, so the whole consensus argument collapses thus bringing down the house of cards they so pain stakingly built.   They couldn't silence scientists by defunding them, they can't discredit them anymore using the canard of being funded by the oil industry, they are increasingly not being able to buy the scientist's consensus through funding either, so now they are making threats to frighten people into silence.

The end has come to AGW, the king is dead, long live the King!

How is it that a so-ca

How is it that a so-called self-styled wannabe savior of the Earth such as Robert Kennedy gets cited by the state for violations related to his illegally destroying trees and green life on his property on the Cape?  Must have been pretty bad to get noticed like that, huh?   I get one of his mailings (I don't know why I'm on their list-same with the ACLU!) relating to the evil of George Bush destroying the environment and wanting to kill us all every other month!  How many trees gave their lives for that, hypocritical elite jerk?

I agree with the poster who said he is unremarkable.  Unfortunately for us, his name is Kennedy so he will undermine and subvert our country.  All that drugging didn't help, either.  What a sham he is.  How much money do the trust funds have in oil and corporations you supposedly despise?

Anyone who says they support the troops but not the mission is a liar.

Here's where I'm getting conf

Here's where I'm getting confused.  If I understand Gore's theory, the glaciers are going to melt, the seas are going to rise, and Casa De Bruzilla and most of Florida will be under several feet of sea water.  Now I have Kennedy telling me that out of 127 glaciers at the start of the century only 17 are left.  That means 110, or just under 80% of the glaciers are gone... yet I still have to drive 20 miles to get to the same beach that has been around, largely unchanged, since the turn of the century.  How can this be?  One would think that if 80% of the glaciers are gone, I should be, at a minimum, needing to wade out to the mailbox each day.  If we've lost 80% of the glaciers, and the sea level hasn't changed, then how will the last 20% send me shopping for real estate in the mountains of North Carolina?

see Beowulf's comment at 10:45 for the answer. It comes under basic Science 101 or one episode of Mr. Wizard.

Of course he didn't bother to

Of course he didn't bother to check history when the melting started.  And he didn't bother to acknowledge glaciers are growing elsewhere.  Glacier's growth is dependent on precipitation, it's always below freezing on top of the mountain.

The Park has had at least 10 periods of widespread glaciation. The last major advance occurred during the Pinedale glaciation. Ice from the last glaciation started melting 12,000 to 13,000 years ago and was 90% gone 11,000 years ago. By 10,000 years ago, the glaciers in the park were about the size of current glaciers and most likely in the same locations. As the climate changed and the glaciers eroded and eventually disappeared, a dramatic landscape of U-shaped valleys, knifelike ridges, hanging valleys, and cirques was left behind. The geologic forces of weathering and erosion continue to make impacts on this landscape. During the mid-19 th century, more than 150 glaciers advanced their furthest extent since the Pinedale. The 34 currently extant, named, high alpine mountain glaciers were created during the Little Ice Age (which began around 1200 A.D.). These glaciers have been receding since the mid-19th century and continue to do so today.

Just look at Mt. St. Helens, a glacier is growing on an active volcano!

Kennedy is not interested in

Kennedy is not interested in actual science, his only interest in the environmental movement has always been for his own personal political power. He does not at all practice what he preaches and his conduct with his base organization, Hudson Riverkeeper, has been deplorable.

Kennedy is right; the science

Kennedy is right; the science is settled on this.  Snoop Dogg, Chris Rock and Madonna confirmed it at Live Earth on Saturday.  What further proof does one need?

They used the 'f' word, too,

They used the 'f' word, too, so we should know that means it's even more true!  They are SO sophisticated...what a bunch of dubes.

I saw this exchange. Stoss

I saw this exchange. Stossel very calmly turned up the heat on Kennedy and Kennedy was spitting and sputtering and talking in his best Elmer Fudd voice. The man was totally flustered and had no answers for Stossel. Kennedy kept trying to change the subject and Neal kept bringing him back.

If that young lady that does the body language segment on Bill OReilly was watching this, I'd bet she'd have a terrific analysis.

Well, Robert Kennedy, Jr. - not all of them..

KENNEDY: .... On every continent, the glaciers and every mountain range on Earth, the glaciers are now receding.

Some of the world's largest glaciers have been getting bigger over the last decade, or so: Glaciers in the eastern Karakoram Range. Note: click on the picture for a blow up.

So Robert Jr., what do you have to say about that? .. and all the record cold weather and snow in the past few months? Hmm?

Gee Gary,You could beat this

Gee Gary,

You could beat this fool black & blue with facts...it wouldn't make one iota of difference to him.

BTW, it's bloody hot in Florida this year.  But we've had rain...which is a good thing.  The longer the rainy season goes on, the less likely we are to have major storms.  (This is my own personal observation having lived here for eons).  Time will tell.  I'm personally hoping for another major embarassment, a la 2006, for the global-warming-causes-hurricanes Goreacle.

Kennedy: "You don't need that science, though. All you need to do is walk outside."

Hey, couldn't get anymore scientific than that! But I agree, you don't need the IPCC science; it's pretty murky and confusing and rumored to be politically biased so don't go punch out the tires in that SUV just yet.

I don't know whether to laugh or feel sorry for Kennedy. His arguments are simplistic and sanctimonious at the same time. He was completely unprepared. Must've been tired from the Loot Earth Concert.

I think RFK jr. was really in

I think RFK jr. was really in the Arctic snooping around looking to get in on the ground floor of the vacation resort business that will surely break out if and whenever that AGW really kicks in up there.  And he might even have been looking for some of those poor dead polar bears hides to bring home to the clan for rugs or wall hangings.

What a total jerk he is!   I'd say John Stossel whooped little Jr. pretty good.

He was probably there looking

He was probably there looking for a cheaper water source for his bottled water product.
