It seems not even Al Gore and his stable of celebrity talent could keep Live Earth at the top of the ratings this past weekend. Greg Pollowitz from The Corner has the breakdown from Nielsen Media Research:
Saturday 7/07/07
Note: The following results are based on the fast affiliate ratings (Live Plus Same Day data).Household Rating/Share
CBS: 3.8/ 8, Fox: 3.0/ 6, ABC: 2.1/ 4, NBC: 1.8/ 4-Total Viewers:
CBS: 5.21 million, Fox: 4.60, ABC: 3.42, NBC: 2.75-Adults 18-49:
Fox: 1.5 rating/6 share, ABC and CBS: 1.1/ 4 each, NBC: 0.9/ 3
That's right; NBC had a total of 2.75 million viewers for their three-hour airing of the Live Earth concerts. As a small consolation, they had more viewers than this spot in Brisbane, Australia, where a large outdoor screen had been set up for the anticipated throng.
Perhaps it's just as well for NBC Universal that it donated, among eight of its stations (broadcast and cable) the 75 hours of airtime for the Live Earth extravaganza. Advertisers on NBC last Saturday night certainly wouldn't have been too pleased with the return on their investment.

Live Earth a Success
July 10, 2007 - 03:44 ET by brewski01It didn’t take long for NewsBusters (aka ExxonMobil News) and it’s stable of corporate toads and flat-earth posters to try, but fail to discredit the Live Earth event with your shrill rhetoric. Live Earth was officially the largest global entertainment event in history and is only the beginning of a three to five year program to improve our environment.
Your article focuses on prime time ratings for NBCTV, but failed to mention the big picture. MSN broadcast the entire concert series live and experienced more than 15 million video streams on its LiveEarth.MSN.com web site
and the most simultaneous viewers of any online concert ever totaling more than 237,000. Since the beginning of the concert Friday night, MSN has served more than 30 million live and on-demand streams of the Live Earth concerts for climate change. Live Earth was broadcast across television networks in more than 100 countries. In the U.S., NBC Universal dedicated all of its domestic networks to Live Earth on July7th culminating with a Prime Time special that aired on NBC. More than 20 of the world’s leading broadcasters including NBC (US), Shanghai Media Group and CTV (China), BBC (UK), Pro Sieben (Germany), TVGLobo (Brazil), Fuji TV and NHK (Japan), South Africa Broadcast Company
(South Africa) and Foxtel (Australia) dedicated a combined total of more than 100 channels to Live Earth concert coverage. Live Earth was broadcast via radio channels in more than 130 countries. Through a partnership with Premiere Radio Network, four separate radio broadcast programs at 18 hours each were heard on 200 syndicated stations in the U.S. Both XM and SIRIUS satellite radio devoted 8 channels each to carry all concerts and messaging in its entirety for 60 total hours of music. In addition, World Space satellite radio delivered 22 ½ hours of audio content across Africa, Asia and Europe in 134 countries.
NewsBusters crack commentors should should stop drinking Billy Beer long enough to put FOX on ‘pause’ and step outside—being very careful to avoid the wires from thier listing short wave towers—and listen to their neighbors screaming ‘we’re mad as hell and we’re not going to take it any longer’. Wake up, the world is passing you by. Your misguided beliefs date you and you will soon be a footnote in history.

July 10, 2007 - 05:07 ET by Jack BauerYou are so full of it, but then, you are a flat-earthering Stalinist
(Yes, you are the true heir to the flat-earthers, powerful cabals who claimed there was a consensus to their view, and were not only incapable of listening to contrary views, they fanatically sought to punish those who dared dissent against their views)
It's hard to know where to begin McCarthyite, so I'll just point one clear logical flaw in what passes for thinking in your head.
You can list all the TV and Satellite companies till you blue in the face. The fact that an organization "broadcasts" something to a potential audience doesn't mean they actually had that audience.
If that was the case Joey would still be on air. (SUIT: Hey, okay no one watches it, but the could do if they want. That counts, right? )
Your "reasoning" has to be the most DUMBASS, LAME BRAINED ARGUMENT I've heard in a very long time. In fact, it's so stupid you must be a socialist.
For instance, the BBC can be watched by 55 million people in the UK. While hear on planet earth reality only a measly 2.7 million actually sat down and watched Live Earth. Dead Wrong.
Or, about one seventh of tho 20 million who watched the orginal Live Aid back in 1985.
But please, carry on demonstrating your firm grasp on unreality and self-delusion.
And on a seperate note, why on earth do you give a frack about what people who disagree with your inane and insane views think. If it's all "passing us by" what's it to you? What do you care?
We're the "fringe" right. We can't affect anything, right? We're the "small minority, right? So I'll repeat, what the frack do you care?
Except that you are clearly a fucking Stalinist of the worst kind who gets offended by the very thought we ain't buying your shit, ot the shit you're being fed like the mushroom you clearly are. Right.
Well guess what pal, we DISSENT against totalitarians like you, and we won't be shutting us up this side of hell freezing over, which is quite possible when the next ice age arrives on cue, as it has for millions of years.
And that's despite the McCartyite witchhunts by the likes of you and your pals in BIG MEDIA and all those sucking on the tit of the billions of dollars sloshing around for the people peddling this MMGWing crap.

Your continual whining about ExxonMobil - a GREAT corporation that allows us to enjoy our high standard of living today at reduced cost (I notice you don't bitch at all about PEMEX, PDVSA, NIOC, or ARAMCO - all state-owned entities that hold more oil than ExxonMobil) - only shows me that you could care less about the environment, science, and all that. It demonstrates to me that you are nothing more than a looter and a committed Socialist who doesn't see a dime on earth that you don't think is yours to steal.

What's it like to live inside your sad little world Jack "Hollycrud" Bauer" and you, Unsane (sic)?
In the end, your words must reflect deeds. All the slogans and false emotional triggers you boys heap on with such glee will eventually cause the ExxonMobil-funded NewsBusters, Media Research Center, and CNSNews to implode.

Or, where the GW religionist scientists you support are getting their funding? I can't imagine they are working for free.

July 10, 2007 - 16:04 ET by brewski01As I understand it, any profits go to the Alliance for Climate Protection, a 503(c) non-profit. The Alliance is only supposed to stay in business for three years and use the money to increase awareness of issues related to climate change. The Board and advisors include, among others, former Vice-President Al Gore; Brent Scowcroft (former Ford and Bush National Security Adviser); Teddy Roosevel IV, a managing director of Lehman Brothers; and Lee Thomas, retired President and COO of Georgia-Pacific Corp.
If carbon offsets were purchased for the events, Al Gore did not profit as he and his investment company based in England own no stock in the companies that sell carbon offsets. The contention that he profits is a widely circulated myth.

Is it just me, or is there one obvious problem with your argument. You know the one where you assume that the motivation behind broadcasting this concert (by those big evil companies) was the same as the motivation of those who created or cared about the concert.
Right. We're mad as hell and we're not going to take it any longer. I'm sure that's what those (big evil) broadcast systems were thinking because they're really really concerned about the future of the Earth - and not that they figured that they could make a buck by selling this to just about every teenager, college student and ex-hippy on the planet.
By the way, how did that Live Aid thing work out for you guys?
Oh, just so you know, it makes you look desperate when you put that much effort into trying to convince everyone how much the world cared about this. In the real world - you know, where people deal with things like caring for their kids and paying their bills and going to work - most people really don't care.
But you let me know when that world of yours passes me by. I'll be sure to make a note of it on a post-it and put it on my fridge.

July 10, 2007 - 08:47 ET by ThisnThatI refused to take that carbon test. One of the questions was "what % of energy comes from clean sources such as solar and wind"?
Well, I live in a state where most of my electricity comes from carbon-neutral nuclear! I consider that source very green. Why isn't it on this elitist list, huh?
What a bunch of narrow-eyed slithering elitist fools.
Nuclear power is not green
July 10, 2007 - 14:23 ET by brewski01Nuclear power plants may not directly emit large amounts of CO2, but if you look at the lifecycle of a nuclear power station its environmental impact is very significant.

I presume you're talking about the problem of disposing of spent fuel? The nuclear power plant itself is a very clean method of producing power. And the other considerations that opponents like to bring up is the effect of the warm water released from cooling towers. All in all, nuclear power is much cleaner and has less impact on the environment than fossil fuels. Funny that I don't hear much concern here in the U.S. about all the nuclear powered subs and aircraft carriers that we have cruising all over the world.

Nuclear power
July 10, 2007 - 16:55 ET by brewski01First, than you for your civilized tone - not what I usually get on this website. Spent fuel has it's own problems, but like any power source (including renewables), the nuclear facilities to produce and distribute the elctricity need to be built. Nuclear plants require an enormous amount of energy to build and they also have to be decommssioned. In addition, mineral ores must be collected and processed to produce nuclear fuel. These processes are either directly powered by diesel and gasoline engines, or draw electricity from othe power grid which may be generated from fossil fuels. Non-renewable uranium ore is in limited quantity and as the high-grade reserves are used up the lower-grade ores require more energy to mine and process. Most estimates place overall CO2 contribution - at present - below fossil fuel power generation, but higher than renewables. At best, nuclear power's contribution to reducing CO2 would be short term and very expensive. The Bush administration is so desperate to start bulding plants in the U.S. that they are proposing a new plan of 'insurance' that would eliminate all financial risk to foreign companies wanting to build in the U.S. If nuclear is so great, why do we have to do that?

July 10, 2007 - 18:32 ET by QueenMumWe can sit around for years weighing the pros and cons of nuclear energy, but the fact is that we already have the manufacturing facilities and the technology to build these plants. Arguing on the basis of what resources will be necessary to build the facilities doesn't make sense. The final result is worth the investment.
Foreign companies are currently ahead of the U.S. in the number of plants online. We can't go forward fast enough on our own. There are American companies already signed on with the U.S. NRC and the DOE once the orders start coming in. The fact that our government must consider certain agreements with foreign companies is a result of the threat of litigation that hangs over any enterprise in the U.S. that the media and the enviros deem "dangerous".
"At best, nuclear power's contribution to reducing CO2 would be short term and very expensive."
Why do you say "short term"? As far as expensive: Are we to disregard any solution because it might be "too expensive"? Either it's worth the effort or it's not. If the planet is in the sort of danger that Al Gore & Co. claim, shouldn't we be willing to do what we can to solve our energy problem? Raising awareness and skimping on toilet paper aren't real solutions. The problem won't be solved by retreating into the past.

July 10, 2007 - 18:47 ET by sarcasmoThe problem is that the Chinese & South Africans seem to be developing the best idea, IMO. I just hope they both make zillions of 'em, and make 'em fit into one or 2 shipping containers, so they can go anywhere. Pebble Bed reactors are IMO as safe as nukes can get (which means you still need to guard them carefully against lunatics). It would be very good for the world, and very bad for Islamofascism and the oil companies both, if these reactors became very popular very fast, IMO.

July 10, 2007 - 21:11 ET by ThisnThatInvestment (construction and maintenance) and mining costs spread out over a 30-60 year operational cycle of a power plant are worth it, considering the energy produced over its life-cycle. A nuclear facility also has a relatively small footprint when compared with solar and wind. And, solar and wind require storage facilities since they do not produce constant output -- and the manufacturing of these storage facilities decreases their "green" qualities.
In addition, nuclear is a proven commodity. It is clean. And there are safe ways to dispose of the nuclear waste. So far, after many, many years, solar and wind have proven to be problems -- so many, in fact, that they still aren't practical for serious, large-scale continuous operations.
But my point wasn't to compare solar, wind, and nuclear. My point was that nuclear is purposfully left off the list by lefties because they think it is "bad". This is a full-fledged political statement that completely ignores the benefits of nuclear in favor of political correctness. In my opinion, it totally disqualifies the "greenies" from helping this country make energy decisions. Until they stop their one-sided and biased arguments, they should be relegated to observers and not active participants. Who are they to tell me that nuclear isn't good?

There's only a certain amount to go around.
So the more wind farms America produces, the less the wind will blow in third world countries. It's a zero sum game. America is stealing wind from impoverished nations.
