Hamas Looters in Gaza Steal Yasser Arafat’s Nobel Peace Prize

Better stow all that needs to be stowed, sports fans, for this is guaranteed to evoke uncontrollable fits of laughter.

Looting Hamas militiamen apparently broke into former Palestinian Liberation Organization leader Yasser Arafat’s home and stole his – wait for it! Wait for it! – Nobel Peace Prize.

Honestly, there’s no way you can make this stuff up.

The Jerusalem Post reported the excruciatingly delicious irony Saturday (emphasis added):

"They stole almost everything inside the house, including Arafat's Nobel Peace Prize medal," said Ramallah-based Fatah spokesman Ahmed Abdel Rahman. "Hamas militiamen and gangsters blew up the main entrance to the house before storming it. They stole many of Arafat's documents and files, gifts he had received from world leaders and even his military outfits."

Charles Johnson at Little Green Footballs marvelously observed: “That will save the Nobel Committee the trouble of awarding Hamas the prize; they already have one!”

Actually, Charles, I still think Hamas will be considered by the Nobel Committee this year, right alongside soon-to-be-Dr. Al Gore. Wouldn’t that be fitting?

Regardless, it's going to be very interesting to see how this gets reported by America's press if at all. Assuming it's covered, will the fact that the looters were from Hamas be addressed, ignored, or buried?

Stay tuned.

*****Update: Glenn Reynolds appropriately observed, "This is what Arafat -- and the Oslo Accords -- wrought."
