Newsweek has the answer … in a quiz befitting Cosmo magazine it asked its readers “Which of these is not causing global warming today?
A) Sport Utility Vehicles
B) Rice Fields
C) Increased Solar Output
If you guessed C) Increased Solar Output you’d be right, according to the magazine. It seems the sun is off the hook for global warming, which is largely the fault of mankind according to co-authors Sharon Begley and Andrew Murr.
“Extremely warm summers, such as the 2003 European heat wave that killed thousands of people? A human fingerprint. Glacial retreat? Ditto, though it is partly natural. Stronger tropical storms, such as Katrina? Possibly our fault, though on this one the evidence is murkier. Heavy precipitation that alternates with dry spells, so that when it rains it pours? That also conforms to models of man-made climate change,” wrote Newsweek.
Begley and Murr pointed to the February 2007 IPCC report and quoted five scientists who agree that climate change is the fault of mankind, but didn’t include a single critic or opposing argument in the nearly three-page long July 9 article.

BBC Poll Shows "Scepticism"
July 3, 2007 - 07:57 ET by ecnirPYou might also find the story about a BBC poll interesting, especially since it shows people consider dog poop a bigger concern than global warming:
"'Scepticism' over climate claims"
And they just can't get away from those scare quotes, can they? Scepticism is scare-quoted, even though that is precisely what their survey found...scepticism!
The survey shows that people find the climate change impacts over-hyped, so we all know what that means. Liberals are going to have to ratchet up the hype to get these peoples' heads straight. Delicious! And how do people get the idea that this is over-hyped? Let's look at the headlines accompanying the story at the BBC website:
"Billions face climate change risk"
"Stark picture of warming world"

July 2, 2007 - 15:48 ET by LionKingI am sure everyone is at least familiar with the term, scientific method. The problem is that liberals have adopted their own version of the scientific method.
For example, instead of comparing macro-evolution and intelligent design on the merits of their science, liberals would rather exclude ID from the discussion. Likewise, assuming that the climate is in fact warmer ( this is still open for discussion), why not consider the one thing that is responsible for ALL of the earth's warming...THE SUN.

The Sun is a giant hydrogen bomb in a perpetual-state of exploding that is responsible for warming the earth, creating photosynthesis, keeping the earth in orbit, and has a trillion other impacts on everything in our solar system. Ya know? The SOLAR system?? That would be, a system of planets and celestial objects that revolve around a central star, known as our sun.
Seriously, how much more blatent can these liberal publications get? Why don't they just say what they mean: "So, you think the sun, or some other natural force may be at work in changing our planet's weather?? Well, think again, because you're WRONG."

July 2, 2007 - 15:36 ET by sarcasmoThe thing that amazes me, as an amateur scientist, is this idea that the Earth's climate should not change from how it is right-now. Another amazing idea is the one which assumes the gigantic perpetual H-bomb reaction-system is somehow free from even any slight fluctuations which, given its great size relative to that of the Earth, would have to affect our climate. I'm amazed it's stayed as stable as it is for as long as it has, but cyclical sunspot activity tells us it's NOT an entirely-stable system.

July 2, 2007 - 16:01 ET by jpatchSarcasmo,
I think I have disagreed with a lot of stuff that you have posted in the past, but I really like this post here.
Beside all of Al Gore's personal issues (bitterness, jealousy, greed), isn't this whole AGW campaign a viciously salient example of the amount of hubris that is employed in politics these days? I mean, think about it. These people are taking a subject like global climate change, and instantly attributing it to humans (hence, anthropomophic GW). How big and mighty do these people think we are? And at the same time, with a single flick of the wrist at the keyboard, they pompously state that the sun has no influence on our weather here.
Lord knows that humans can and have influenced everything on earth, from atoms to mountains. The human factor in climate change should not be ignored - however, as someone said above, what the h*ll happened to the scientific method? We need to start looking at things from a macro-level first, and then work down to our level. Starting this debate with the Kyoto Protocol or with Carbon Credits is not only a sham, it's a slap in the face to any intelligent person that understands science.

July 2, 2007 - 16:19 ET by sarcasmoSince the first thing humans worshipped was no-doubt the Sun, it's intersting that you used the term "hubris," but I think it fits here perfectly -- especially in light of the evidence being ignored from Mars to Titan & beyond. And check out the links in this post for an eye opener the news media wants everyone to ignore.

It's called the dumbing down
July 2, 2007 - 15:45 ET by vrwc13It's called the dumbing down of our society....public schools and the liberal/socialist agenda have been at work for decades. Take The former USSR for instance (I spent a year there not too long ago, so I have first hand experience of the results). They took the children from the home at an early age and indoctrinated them into communism. The result is that there are people in Russia today that still believe the stuff they were "taught".
One example is that a grown man, sucsessful in Russian terms took some of out to a Russian forest and asked "Do you have trees like this in America?" He was serious. Thought the U.S. was a combination of "Escape from New York" and "F Troop".
Now we have the lib/socialist/secular humanist agenda at work here. Taking kids from the home - preschool through public school and away from home and faith. Remember "It Takes a Village". Scary thing is there are a lot of people out there that probably agree with the Newsweak article.
Yeah, logic, reason, facts play less of a role now in the way we make decisions in America. – Al Gore

On a local show here in Columbus, Ohio the Internet Skeptic was on and he was saying that there was a chart of different causes of global warming and a number representing how much the scientists knew about that cause and these scientists actually admitted that they knew pretty much nothing about the sun as a cause for global warming.
How can you not know about the sun as it relates to global warming, when it's the sun that causes any warming at all?

July 2, 2007 - 15:49 ET by jpatchHey there AJSHOPE...
I'm in New York City now, but I am a graduate of The Ohio State U. Good to hear that people in Columbus are keeping up on things. But you said exactly what the point of all of this AGW nonsense should be. The most important factor in the formation of the climate on earth is the sun, and yet it is the least understood. That should be the jumping off point for the great AGW debate. NOT declaring scientific consensus' that don't exist, NOT telling people that the earth is going to die and that we're responsible, NOT trying to steal money from people based upon personal political ambition and greed.
Yeah, in fact, if you check
July 2, 2007 - 16:00 ET by AJSHOPEYeah, in fact, if you check out the Internet Skeptic you'll see a bunch of powerpoint presentations that he gives to groups across the country. The very first one is the presentation he made on the radio. The funny thing is that he's not a scientist and all he does is use the scientific methods and theories that the scientists themselves have used and stated as science before all of this global warming alarmism started. So he uses their own science against them to show how wrong they are.

I am really confused. Did it reach 150 degrees F there or something? People have lived in much higher temps without AC. Did they forget to drink water, or were they afraid to do so because of high concentrations of di-hydrogen monoxide in water? Unless someone tossed them in an oven I have a hard time believing they died because of the heat. It was stupidity, not the heat.
Didn't NASA recently release some information on atmospheric tems lately that said since the 70's, when they started recording data, the atmosphere has not warmed at all?

July 2, 2007 - 21:19 ET by Iron LadyI made this point when it happened - that I had huge doubts about the numbers. A woman on one of my favorite boards was irate with me - she was living in France and maintained the numbers were real. She claimed it was getting 111 degrees, but I think her conversions were wrong because the highest temperature I could find listed was about 103. As you say - well within the bounds of human tolerance. Heck, I lived with those kinds of temps every summer as a child with no air conditioning or swamp coolers. I have a friend whose daughter is living in the Arizona desert where it routinely gets to 120 - and they have no AC either.
I investigated further - and got some response from my friend. Evidently, almost all these people died in nursing homes, long-term care facilities, or were elderly people living alone = and they died of dehydration. The deaths were during summer vacations (they get months of vacation yearly), and families were off on vacation and not checking on their family members. There were comments at the time about how callous it was that people - hearing the problems, still didn't return home to check on loved ones. Not sure how true that is.
I do know that the lawsuits against the nursing homes/etc would have stopped that from happening again. Of course - they have socialized medicine, right? Probably another "benefit" of that system.

July 2, 2007 - 21:28 ET by BlondeIron Lady,
What I am understanding from your post is that the "wonderful French socialistic model of health care" is that, when it's summer, all of the nurses and doctors bail and head for the Riviera.
I remember this story, and wondered why so many elderly people died. The media made it sound like they died from a lack of air-conditioning. Which, when if one thinks about it, is absurd.
It is sickening to think that they died of dehydration. Elderly people don't die from being warm, they die of dehydration!
That is abuse of the first sort. And if it is indicative of "socialized healthcare"....a la Hillary Village Clinton....I want nothing to do with it.
But your post makes the most sense of anything I've read to date about this incident, so thanks.
