With all the carping and whining about conservative talk radio these days, I’m beginning to wonder if this is indeed a larger cause of all the planet’s woes than global warming.
In fact, if you hadn’t noticed, there are a number of high-ranking political officials who believe the public’s opinion of illegal immigration emanates directly from radio talk show hosts that are enflaming the citizenry concerning this important issue.
Regardless of the sudden frequency of such publicly-aired sentiments, or their inanity, to hear them expressed on the floor of the Senate by the Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada) Thursday was nevertheless entertaining (video available here courtesy of Allah at Hot Air):
The same day, Mr. President, yesterday, I got my mail from Searchlight. I have a, [unintelligible] sends me my mail. It comes addressed to me in Searchlight. Letter was addressed to me, and said among other things, “You probably should go into the witness protection program because of your work on this immigration issue.” That’s from Searchlight, Nevada, Mr. President. This doesn’t take into consideration the letters and the calls at my offices in Reno and Las Vegas and here in Washington get filled with hate.
[…]
Talk radio has had a field day. These generators of simplicity. Now, Mr. President, I want everyone to know, I want the record spread. I do not believe that anyone who is a United States senator that votes against this motion to proceed is filled with prejudice, filled with hatred, with venom as we get in our phone calls and our mail. I don’t believe that.
Hmmm. So, if a senator votes against this bill, he or she is not filled with prejudice, hatred, or venom. However, if a citizen voices his or her displeasure with this same bill, he or she is indeed filled with such negative and virulent sentiments, likely because he or she listens to talk radio.
And this is the second most powerful person in the Democrat party expressing such a view on the floor of the Senate.
Amazing.
Yet, there's a larger issue here of greater concern: the more liberals castigate talk radio, the more such sentiments will be aired on television and reprinted in newspapers and magazines. And, much as they are doing with global warming by continually asserting the presence of a scientific consensus that doesn't exist, the more talk radio is blamed for problems in the society, the more people will begin to believe it.
This could unfortunately lead to an easier path to killing talk radio as we know it.
Be afraid. Be very afraid.

I am absolutely mortified at how passively that the general public stands by (without any obvious concern) and witnesses these left wing radicals (democrats, liberals, MSM, all communists) first savage and then dismantle every moral and tradional value that has been held dear to the fabric of this, the greatest societal experiment in the history of the world and the LAST bastion of safety for Christianity on the face of the earth.

What Reid --- and apparently his Democratic peers --- don't want to admit, is that if he had brought 14 of the 15 Dems who voted against cloture to his side, the cloture vote would've passed. Instead of being honest and saying "I failed to lead my party," he blames talk radio, which had not one vote in the Senate that day. He, Kennedy, Kyl, Lott, and Graham tried to pull a fast one over on the public to get the illegal immigration issue off the table, and thanks to a popular uprising, they were stopped cold!

June 29, 2007 - 12:14 ET by Michigan TboneWhat has not been fully explained to anyone is WHY these so called conservative Republicans want this bill to pass so badly. We've all heard the arguments about needing legislation to fix the problem, that Republicans being pro business just want the cheap labor, Liberals just want the votes, etc, etc. I find these explanations to be lacking in substance from both sides of the aisle. Does anyone out there have the true explanation for this steadfast insistence that we NEED this bill to fix the immigration problem??? I have my own theories, ones that do NOT include black helicoptors and the New World Order, but its getting hard to explain certain events going on in our government without looking to fringe explanations.
Why would a so called conservative President be so adamant about allowing illegal alien infestation into this country??
Why would a so called conservative President be so adamant AGAINST inforcing laws already on the books??
Why would a so called conservative President be so adamant in OPPOSING the obvious and apparent will of the American people??
Why would a so called conservative President be so adamant in supporting a bill that is so highly touted and lauded by LIBERAL DEMOCRATS???

June 29, 2007 - 12:23 ET by nythatesusaIf talk radio led opposition to the immigration bill, then the traditional media has led opposition to the Iraq War, most shamefully with the non-stop pimping of the Abu Ghraib incident. Where is Trent Lott on this issue? Must "something be done" about the media-center-leftists.
Even when a majority of Americans supported the Iraq intervention, the public demonstrations were dominated by the anti-war crowd. Since those demonstration take place on "public" roads and in "public" parks, shouldn't they be subject to "equal-time" legislation as well? Should they be forced to have pro-Iraq War people speak at their events?
This is just as ridiculous as forcing radio stations to air certain views, but if the Democrats insist on trying to re-impose the "Fairness Doctrine", Republicans need to demand that the legislation include "Fairness" for those areas that the Left dominates, especially academia. But Republicans should pledge to veto any final bill that contains government-imposed fairness on either side, since it is unconstitutional.
GOP leaders in Congress should send a letter to college presidents asking them how they would implement an "Academic Fairness Doctrine". This would enrage them, as Democratic threats have enraged talk radio hosts and their fans. It would show that they are just as unwilling to tolerate such a regime.

In other words, you as a leader have to be in agreement with your followers to be of the same mind. Your job as a leader is to organize the followers to accomplish what all or most of you agree with in the first place. A salesman is not a leader. To be a Representative of the People you must "represent" their thinking not sell them or trick them into it.

June 29, 2007 - 13:45 ET by Lame CherryHarry Reid can blame talk radio all he wants, but maybe Americans have personal experience with all these border busters from raping women and children in our communities, moving into our neighborhoods with sofas on the lawns living like pigs, giving lice to our kids in school, making rude comments about us in shopping line in "their language" thinking we don't understand, clogging up our traffic lanes, gas pumps and check outs to a real favorite of mine walking around and acting like they own this country.
That is what has Americans p*ssed off. We can't find now jobs except working for insurance benefits because robber companies are hiring illegals, taking kickbacks and the border busters aren't spending the money here they are sending it all to Mexico, China or Russia to fund their regimes.
Harry Reid is a traitor to America and George Bush is a sell out to the big business slave trade. His old man bit on George Mitchells raise taxes and George bit on Teddy Kennedy's amnesty to ruin his presidency too.
The only thing this does is just make Fred Thompson look more like a landslide winner as Americans are starving for an American leader. God help to elect Americans to Congress and not the tripe in their now who vote like Soviet FSB agents.

Noel, a few points on "divide" and "hate" on Immigration
June 29, 2007 - 14:24 ET by Gary HallNoel, a few points on the "divide" and "hate" on Immigration. (your post here is right on).
In the background. Reid is the poster child of the MSM in the promotion of the theme that they created in the past many months; that being that the divide was in the Republican party (hundreds of stories). No divide in the Democrat party, I suspect? Oh, but there was, and there is. And, in fact, the media othewise, would have never openly supported the Democrats in this bill. The media did not like the bill. Now they are celebtrating it's defeat - but mostly for the immediate self gratification of hurting President Bush, and in hurting the R's chances next year. It's Win - Win - Win for the MSM.
Blame the "conservative" view of the immigration reform bill on the radicals in talk radio? No, no, no. The conservative hateful view being expressed in the right is the same view that not only did the majority of Americans hold strongly in their heart as this debate began last year, it was also the same view that Sen. Harry Reid held in his heart back in 1993.
Let's acknowledge that Reid's 1993 bill, even today, represents the general generic view of numerous leaders on the Democrat side of the isle (and of course on the R. side, as well), even in recent years, including Clinton's reform effort chaired by the late Rep. Barbara Jordan (D) of Houston, TX. Let's identify her: 'The Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) recently awarded its prestigious Barbara Jordan Award for Women's Achievement to U.S. Congresswoman ...' These folks wanted serious immigration reform - Shhh - don't let the press remember that! Tancredo actually fit nicely in their camp, but he's a hateful racist, and their voice was -- i g n o r e d, by the media.
So Reid and the media will blame the push by talk radio as the reason that the "immigration bill" did not pass. Hundreds of stories have been run in recent months focusing on the divide in the Republican party on this issue. The real divide was between what the MSM wanted (Amnesty for all, and open borders - the message the marchers carried) and what the voters wanted.
The MSM is ecstatic about the failure of the bill. The bill as defeated would be considered a left of center bill by any impartial bystander. Bill Clinton supported it. The MSM never wanted the public to know of this support. The majority of the Democrats ended up supporting it (but I believe, only because they thought it would hurt the Republicans, and Bush); but while roughly 3/4's of the Democrats in congress supported the bill, polls showed that only a handful of folks supported Bush on it. Those numbers were the highest on the Democrat side of the polls.
Just how do we let the MSM pull this off? They did it on the Medicare Rx bill. They did it on WMD's in Iraq. They did it on SS Reform. In the beginning of each debate, the MSM spends months pushing the far left view on the American people, bringing doubt to the gullible. The conviction of the voters is challenged - the poll numbers move to the left. Then the media targets the Repubicans as divided.
Polls showed:
The voters supported partial privatization of SS reform. The voters did not support Bush on the reform.
The seniors liked the Rx benefit in the Medicare Reform bill. Polls showed that the voters did not support Bush's effort.
The voters trust the Democrats much more on the Immigration Reform Bill. Voters did not agree with Bush on it. It's the same bill that the Senate Democratic leadership has been standing up and trying to push through in a bi-partisan effort with President Bush.
The MSM has succeeded in nothing short of magic here. The MSM does not support the bill - they want something to the left of, or nothing. They represent the few who ignorantly say, “Punish the folks who hire the illegal’s.” AND “There is no one here who will do the work.” One cannot have it both ways – but the media has successfully sold it, as just that.
The majority of Democrats in Washington side with Bush on the bill - which is left of what the voters want. Voters support and trust the D's on it more than Bush and the R's. The majority view is cast by the media as hateful right wing spew. The MSM only recognizes (and pushes in the news) that it is the right-wingers who oppose the bill, that the MSM, itself, cannot support.

Even so, our Shortest Senator and biggest wind bag both voted IN FAVOR of the measure. I guess they didn't see the rallies in Prince Georges or Montgomery.
