Global Warming Update: First Snow in Johannesburg and Pretoria Since 1981 and 1968

As the worm has clearly turned on all this global warming hooey, it seems appropriate to begin recording COLD events across the planet not just to highlight the foolishness, but also to infuriate those still buying into the junk science.

With that in mind, it snowed in parts of South Africa Tuesday that haven’t seen the frosty white stuff in many decades.

Thanks, global warming!

As deliciously (and frigidly) reported by Bloomberg Wednesday (emphasis added to really irk the alarmists):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Johannesburg recorded its first confirmed snowfall for almost 26 years overnight as temperatures dropped below freezing in South Africa's largest city, grounding flights at its main airport...Snow last blanketed Johannesburg for a single day on Sept. 11, 1981.

[…]

Light snowfall was also recorded in Pretoria, the capital, which last had snow on June 11, 1968, the newswire said.

June 1968! Most of the hyperventilating hysterical probably weren't born yet!

So, do you figure that alarmists like soon-to-be-Dr. Al Gore will admit they’re wrong when cities around the world start reporting record snows and lows on a regular basis as this new cooling trend -- which began in 1998, for those that might actually being interested in facts! -- continues?

Or, will they maintain that colder weather and rare snowfalls are all part of “climate change” which is tied directly to CO2 emissions?

Yes…that was rhetorical.

WHERE WAS THE POST ABOUT THE HEATWAVE IN EUROPE THAT KILLED 30+ PEOPLE?

Well, maybe if gangs of "youths" in France would stop setting cars on fire every night, Europe wouldn't have lost 30+ from the heat.

But then , was just a few years ago France allowed 10,000+ elderly and sick to die in that heat wave ... you know, to take the strain off their socialized system.

You know, as sarcastic as that remark is, you may not be far from the truth of the matter.  What better way to reduce population than to implicate something else as the culprit for one's policy actions.  The liberal fear mongering over the population bomb back in the 70s has simply been repackaged in the form of AGW.  Everyone knows that energy consumption (including CO2 emissions) is proportional to population.  As long as the population rises, energy consumption rises and the double whammy is that due to the capitalism of the US, the standard of living is rising for the poor of the world. A rising standard of living results in a rising use of energy. (We exported millions of jobs by outsourcing around the world)  India and China directly owe their rising standard of living to the reforms away from Socialism to Capitalism and trade with the US.

The only way that Socialism as a political and economic system can work is if the population is static and the standard of living doesn't rise.  Hence, liberals are doing everything they can to choke off the economy by the use of regulations on industry and increasing the tax burden on the middle class by flooding the US with poor people from other countries.  We all know that increasing taxes removes money from people's pockets to spend, save and invest.  Taking money from the people, takes money from the economy.

One major caveat here!

You have to remember that South Africa is in the Southern Hemisphere. As such, at this time of year they are just starting winter.

Summer starts here in North America on June 21, and winter starts in South Africa at the same time. At this point in time, we are discussing this on the South African equivalent of December 27th.

"One major caveat here

"One major caveat here! You have to remember that South Africa

It's not a major caveat. Whether they are entering winter, summer, or happy hour, it's still the first snowfall they have had in Johannesburg in 26 years, and in Pretoria in 39 years. Sure, it may be winter now, but it usually doesn't snow there in the winter, and one would assume it would be even more unlikely to snow there while the planet is allegedly experiencing catastrophic global warming.

Actually, I find this very in

Actually, I find this very interesting because the southern hemisphere seems to respond counter to the solar cycle.  Both 1968 and 1981 were near the top of the solar cycle.  In the northern hemisphere we typically have heavy snows near the bottom of the solar cycle.  We are still at the bottom of this solar cycle and have not yet begun the next one.

My guess would be the effect is reversed due to the majority of the land mass being in the northern hemisphere and by default the majority of the water mass being in the southern hemisphere.  I speculate that the higher solar output during the top of the solar cycle affects the southern hemisphere by evaporating more water because of the greater surface area of ocean exposed to the sun.  Which makes this heavy snow event very troubling as it does not fit the normal pattern.

South African average temps

According to Weather Underground, the average high for June in Johannesburg is 61 and the average low is 45.  In Pretoria, 66 and 41, respectively.  Winter or not, this snow is unusual.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

Just for comparison, the latitudes of Johannesburg (26.1 degrees S) and Pretoria (25.44 degrees S) is closer to the equator than Tampa Fl (27 degree 58 min N).  The last time Tampa saw snow was 1977 and 1899 before that.

BTW - Both of those events were at or near the bottom of the solar cycle.

The right to have children should be a marketable commodity, bought and traded by individuals but absolutely limited by the state. —Kenneth Boulding, originator of the “Spaceship Earth”

We have wished, we ecofreaks, for a disaster or for a social change to come and bomb us into Stone Age, where we might live like Indians in our valley, with our localism, our appropriate technology, our gardens, our homemade religion—guilt-free at last! —Stewart Brand (writing in the Whole Earth Catalogue).

What we’ve got to do in energy conservation is try to ride the global warming issue. To feed a starving child is to exacerbate the world population problem. —Lamont Cole

The only hope for the world is to make sure there is not another United States: We can’t let other countries have the same number of cars, the amount of industrialization, we have in the U.S. We have to stop these Third World countries right where they are. The continued rapid cooling of the earth since WWII is in accord with the increase in global air pollution associated with industrialization, mechanization, urbanization and exploding population. —Reid Bryson, “Global Ecology; Readings towards a rational strategy for Man”, (1971)

The battle to feed humanity is over. In the 1970s, the world will undergo famines. Hundreds of millions of people are going to starve to death in spite of any crash programs embarked upon now. Population control is the only answer. —Paul Ehrlich, in The Population Bomb (1968)

I would take even money that England will not exist in the year 2000. —Paul Ehrlich in (1969)

In ten years all important animal life in the sea will be extinct. Large areas of coastline will have to be evacuated because of the stench of dead fish. —Paul Ehrlich, Earth Day (1970)

This [cooling] trend will reduce agricultural productivity for the rest of the century. —Peter Gwynne, Newsweek 1976

There are ominous signs that the earth’s weather patterns have begun to change dramatically and that these changes may portend a drastic decline in food production—with serious political implications for just about every nation on earth. The drop in food production could begin quite soon… The evidence in support of these predictions has now begun to accumulate so massively that meteorologist are hard-pressed to keep up with it. —Newsweek, April 28, (1975)

This cooling has already killed hundreds of thousands of people. If it continues and no strong action is taken, it will cause world famine, world chaos and world war, and this could all come about before the year 2000. —Lowell Ponte in “The Cooling”, 1976

If present trends continue, the world will be about four degrees colder for the global mean temperature in 1990, but eleven degrees colder by the year 2000. … This is about twice what it would take to put us in an ice age

danbo - cyclonic stuff

danbo, et all. We've been here before - but I'd like to post this data, again, from the ole weather experts for educational purposes. Hurricane season is upon us.

Here's the web page for those who'd like to see the 2007 Atlantic hurricane prediction. If you scroll down to section 7 you'll catch quite a scientific explanation of why the "scientists" are saying that there is little if any evidence of a link to more intense or more frequent hurricanes because of global warming.

Phil also put together a nice little chart, which clearly indicates that the hurricane activity of late, is not unusual, at all. Broken down, it says:

YEARS 1900 - 1949 (50 years):

Named storms = 189; Hurricanes = 101; Intense Hurricanes (Cat 3,4,5) = 39

YEARS 1956 - 2005 (50 years):

Named storms = 165; Hurricanes = 83; Intense Hurricanes (Cat 3,4,5) = 34

Then they note that in the second 50 year period that the global temperature increase was +0.4 degrees C.

As it turnes out, warmer weather = fewer tropical storms, fewer hurricanes and fewer major hurricanes. Look forward to seeing those numbers on the nightly news, on GMA, on the front page of any national newspaper. Heck, I'd be surprised if even National Geographic could force themselves to print it. It's just not the data that they want us to see.

Steve is no physicist. If he

Steve is no physicist. If he is, the world is lost because he cannot look a data and see the obvious. He just stayed at a Holliday Inn Express last night.

Steve

Steve,

It never ceases to amaze me how many times the obvious has to be explained to folks who hold themselves in such undeservedly high esteem, especially those who criticize highly-regarded scientists without having the decency of providing links to their bios or published papers to demonstrate their own credibility.

Regardless, for the umpteenth time, as we are a media analysis blog, we are regularly witnessing heat waves being tied to global warming. Have you witnessed this, Steve, or have you had your head buried in the sand the past three years?

Regardless, we here at NewsBusters like to point out extreme cold events -- which, of course, are rarely reported by the press unless they can be connected to human suffering somehow tied directly to corporate greed or fiscal irresponsibility -- to mock the stupidity inherent in using a heat wave to prove climate change.

In fact, I quite imagine, Steve, that when our nation goes through its first heat wave this summer, you'll be "bringing up statistical fluctuations like this" in order to help "your cause."

So, please take a step down from that high horse you like to put yourself on. It really isn't flattering, and none of us is buying into your disgraceful sense of self-importance.    ns

If we just hang out on our ow

If we just hang out on our own planet we find enough going on in the weather to make it obvious to the un-blind that this whole system is MUCH bigger than us.

Australia is having a colder than usual winter - causing concern about crops.

England is about to be washed off the island.

Norway had a summer festival near Oslo that was basically washed out - pictures of campers wading through mud and trying to get in the festive mood.

The reason these things are making the news, somewhere, is because they're unusual! Not the norm.  And not abnormally warm

But what if we hop over to one of our neighbors - Mars? or Venus? Is there silence on their weather events in the hopes that we won't notice and ask inconvenient questions?

NO one has addressed either the weather on the other planets or the Mideaval Warming Period, the Maunder Minimum, the dust bowl...with any credibility.  At ALL, in fact.  And to just shriek louder in the face of reason or common sense is about as mature and intellectual as a two-year-old throwing a tantrum.

Postmodernism GW

Actually isn't this whole "facts and logic don't matter" matra used if not spoken by the GW crazies now and Al Gore his whole career a part of the latest academic postmoderism philosophy developed by the leftist professors to counter any logic which discredits their positions?  Also it seems I've heard some of the Hollywood brainchilds talking about going with their feelings, not with the facts; Woopie Goldburg and Rosie O are two I remember.  The point being that the denial of obvious facts that contradict their position is a part of the overall stragedy to overturn the entire country.  Kind of like 1984 - "Truth is lies and lies are truth'.

UGH!!! I dropped a link about this story on this site yesterday.

Anyhow, picking it up here ... If you look at a map of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres ... of THIS planet (that most of us reasonable folks live on) ... you will see the distance of South Africa to Antarctica is comparable to the distance Florida is to the Arctic Circle.  As stated yesterday, back when I was in grade school when they actually taught geography, the two hemispheres have opposing seasons.  Australia is in the Southern Hemi ... hence it's winter there, as it is summer here.

Now, back to my Florida comparison, it is NOT unheard of for Florida to have snow during our winters ... one hopes and wishes they do not because it endangers our winter supplies of fresh produce, and the spring harvest of citrus.

This alarm over South Africa getting a few flakes ...

The reason for my rant is that I am so sick of the MSM branch of the GW cultists taking claim over every weather story and claiming it is ALL a symptom of GW ... "climet change" when the story regards a cold weather event.

Call me pigish and black-hearted, but I'm wishing for a comet to appear in the sky so the GW cult will pee their collective pants, share a vat of grape Koolade, put on their Nike sneakers, and cover their faces with black shrouds while stacked in their bunks.

Go ahead, let me have it ... But I'll not be taking it back.
