Favorite Tunes and Videos, hosted by Mean Gene Dr. Love

Photo of Mean Gene Dr. Love.

We had a lot of fun sharing clips, tunes, and videos on a recent forum topic, I figured we should have a topic dedicated to that. I think it will be a fun place to share our favorites with each other.

I think there should be a couple ground rules:

1. Nothing obscene (porn, excessive vulgar language, or excessively violent)
2. It would be nice to give a bit of background about what you are sharing. For example: Why you like it, anything noteworthy about it, etc.

I look forward to seeing/hearing the things we want to share.

I know she's "in" and all now, but I never thought Amy Winehouse would hit it that big here in the U.S.  I'm stunned she's even nominated for a VMA.

My Liberal-Existentialist friend first played her for me back in the winter of '06.  He liked her so much, he bought the album on import because Back to Black wasn't available here at the time.

Everytime I listen to Rehab I see it in terms of life in general, because there's way more than just booze you can live in denial about.

Nightwish

Recently the Finnish band Nightwish released their latest album, Dark Passion Play.  If you like your metal symphonic (I have also described them as Dream Theater with a female vocalist), check them out.  This is their first album with the Swedish vocalist Anette Olzon, and while not as operatic as their previous vocalist, she performs perfectly well.  They are touring the United States for what I believe is their first time, and can't wait for their visit to Houston.

I did not think anybody was participating on this thread anymore. Wow Trach your taste in music surprises me. I figured you to be more of debbie boone kind of guy.

Check out this Eminem video, it is about his relationship with his mother. He is very successfull, but obviously he has a lot of issues.

roger

I'm no prude Roger, but not a big fan of "death metal". Not sure if that is what it was, but it sounded like it. More of a fan of 70s and 80s metal AC DC, KISS, Def Lepeard. Check out the worst knife thrower ever.

METAL

I'll never forget when I was 16, fully ensconced in a "If it's not Slayer it SUCKS" mode, and a friend of mine, who was getting into metal but hadn't jammed to Slayer, told me "Slayer is Satan!"  My response: "Your point is...?"  (He got hooked on them as well.)

I got into 'em ALL.  Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Anthrax, Slayer...brings back memories!  To this day I still jam out to them, and get hold of some of the newer guys like Meshuggah.

I wonder what Imadinnerjacket thinks about this.  I'd heard about it...but thanks for the link.

Didn't he kinda remind you of Connie Chung on the piano there?  That's a funny vid too...it used to be here (On NB vids, not Mean Gene's forum).

<edit>  I know where I posted this....and where it landed is not it!  This was in response to american-americans YouTube of the SNL gay parody of Dinner Jacket.  It's funny.

I think that happens when the comment you reply to gets deleted?

Free,

I believe it happens when you edit it prior to someone responding.  But that's just a guess....it happened back on the Mad Michelle forum long time ago...with much live consternation at the time.

Depends on who does the deleting of a comment, I suspect.

I am clueless why

I was wondering why my post was at top myself. I thought it should be at the bottom, as it was the last post added. Then I thought maybe I was the only person seeing it on top, as I was the one who posted.. I don't know.

Please don't be angry with me for whatever made my post be the top position. I promise I am nobody and I didn't do anything to make it be positioned there.

geez.. I missed alot by not having MTV

I didn't have cable then, I lived in the mountains of North GA, and cable wasn't available in the boondox until 1990. My father-in-law, next door to us, had one of those massive satellite dishes, remember those huge lawn ornaments?  But I cannot believe I have never seen that video. I love that song, Tom Petty is awesome.

BTW... the pill I was referring to, from the Matrix.  :-)

O.K. here are my first ones. This is Hollow (the acoustic version), Juicy (the one Applebees and Desperate Housewives have used in their commercials), Desperately Wanting, Good, In The Blood, Rosealia, King of New Orleans, and A Lifetime all by Better Than Ezra.

BTE is one of my most favorite bands, I own all of their albums, I've seen them live several times, and hope to see them again in the future. Kevin Griffin is a great songwriter (he's done quite a few songs for a wide range of people...some of them have even been featured on American Idol) and he's a more than adequate vocalist and a talented guitarist. BTE is always very entertaining in their live shows...they do comical medleys of covers ranging from ZZ Top's La Grange to Van Halen's Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love to The Cure's Just Like Heaven to David Bowie's Major Tom. As a bonus, I've never seen or heard them wax political. They support the troops and frequently dedicate their song Recognize to the U.S. fighter and bomber pilots. If you ever have the chance to see them live, don't miss out.

Check out more at www.betterthanezra.com. They are almost always touring...check it out to see if they will be in your area.

That's some good stuff MG. I liked BTE back in the late 90's ish but never kept up with them. It's always nice to hear a band that entertains without believing the mic is their excuse to spout their personal drivel.

MG,

That's the song (a bad version)..but there were no original versions of it on YouTube.  It was a Phil Lesh song....there was one with two guys playing the guitar that was kind of okay....until they started singing.  Get the CD.  It's one of the Dead's best...and totally not a popular favorite, IMO (and one of the only things I got for free in my divorce, LOL!).  Mars Hotel.

Now here's something interesting....Lee Michael's....this will pin my age on me perfectly...but this song never fails to crack me up....I remember hearing this from the time I was in about fourth grade.

Thank you, thank you.  I am going to bookmark that site!

The studio rehersals were absolutely great.  It was fascinating to hear the song in its developing stages...all guitar riffs (Oh how I miss Jerry Garcia) instead of the piano, and without the smooth vocals.

Mars Hotel has always been my favorite Dead CD.

Now, time to search for some Lowell George & Little Feat.

I love the spanish/flamenco guitar sound. If you ever go to Marbella, Spain you must visit the Ana María for the best flamenco experience. It is a small, cozy hole-in-the-wall where they have live flamenco music, singing and dancing (the flamenco clapping and tapping are unbelievable!--and the dancers are nice to look at too). It was one of the high-lights of our trip in Andalusia. I will go back next time I'm in Spain.
