In today's Chicago Sun-Times, columnist Jennifer Hunter writes of:
"an interesting phenomenon that has arisen over the last few months: a trend of moderate Republicans who want to vote for Barack Obama. It may seem counterintuitive, conservatives supporting a candidate who wants to tax the wealthy and embrace the conventions in the Kyoto Accord, but there is something in Obama's message about ridding politics of partisanship that is appealing to these Republicans."
In the first sentence, moderate Republicans are backing Obama. By the next, they've become conservatives. You'd think Ms Hunter, who is married to the newspaper's publisher, would know - as most people do - that moderate Republican isn't synonymous with conservative.
Miss Hunter identifies three supposed Republicans now backing Barack Obama. The operative word here is supposed. One of the three voted for John Kerry in the last presidential election. Yet another says she didn't vote for President Bush in 2004. There's no indication as to how the other "Republican" voted in 2004.
Yes, it's apparent those conservative Republicans are eagerly jumping on the Obama bandwagon. Just ask the mainstream media. They're really on top of those interesting phenomena.

June 19, 2007 - 19:02 ET by LeonOh Queen,
I have no problem with Romney. But I'm a liberal and he's one of us.
But to be fair, Bloomberg did efficiently and effectively run the greatest, most powerful, most important city in all of America.
An old girlfriend of mine's stepfather used to work with Bloomberg at Salomon Brothers (which I believe has since become a part of Smith Barney). He was around at the time that Bloomberg was conceiving his idea of the Bloomberg network. He said Bloomberg was one of the most enthusiastic and inspiring people he ever met. Said he knew how to get things done and how to get people excited about taking care of business.
Look at all the waste in our government. WOuldn't it be great to have a president that could take care of this mess. Run our government like a business. Cost benefit. That;s what we need.
like Perot?
June 19, 2007 - 19:09 ET by Pragmatic-ManRun the government like a business? You mean a candidate like Perot? Already tried that, didn't work.
But I agree with the premise. If the government were run for profit (actually, instead of under the table like now), I believe we would all benefit. Make every citizen a shareholder, and pay dividends. Shares traded only when a person immigrates away. And make new public offerings of shares available on a very limited basis to new immigrants (at cost, of course). Want to take the pulse of the nation? Valuate the citizen stock price.
Just an idea. But I bet that we would soon replace taxes with dividends, and escape the red ink for good.
campaign failed
June 19, 2007 - 19:17 ET by LionKingThe premise did not fail, the campaign failed. I presume the campaigned failed mainly because Perot did not have the mettle for politics...that's okay. Politics is a slimy business.
I would have to evaluate Bloomberg on all of his policies. I do not care about party affiliation as much as I care about conservatism.
voted for Perot
June 19, 2007 - 19:22 ET by Pragmatic-ManPlease don't tell any of my conservo peers,.... but I voted for Ross. I looked at the ticket (albeit at a young impressionable age, my first national election) and saw a car salesman beside one box, a very tired man beside another box, and a fiery businessman (sans politics) with new ideas beside the last box. I checked the last box.
Of course, being "pragmatic", I will not do such again. Mistake made, lesson learned. (but I still liked his businessman approach)
prag...its okay
June 19, 2007 - 19:27 ET by LionKingprag...It's okay. I voted for Perot also in 1992. It was tough, but I really wanted a viable third party to offer a choice. I was also impressed with Perot businessman approach...I like pie-charts.
Unfortunately, neither the dems or the pubs learned. The message did not reach the politicians.

June 19, 2007 - 19:18 ET by QueenMumYeah. Well Pragmatic one, the idea wasn't very well received when Pres. Bush wanted to offer citizens the opportunity to invest their Social Security money. The Dem Bush-haters managed to convince a large portion of the population that the idea would be too risky. All they had to do was combine the words "Social Security" and "Enron". And heaven forbid that Pres. Bush end his presidency by being able to claim success in revamping SS.
