On Friday's The Situation Room, CNN's Jack Cafferty used his regular "Cafferty File" segment to attack President Bush for not reappointing Joint Chiefs Chairman Peter Pace out of fear of a tough confirmation hearing, tagging it a "gutless" decision. At about 5:08 p.m., as Cafferty set up his regular question of the hour about what it would take to end the war in Iraq, he lashed out at the absence of greater outrage from the American people, and suggested that American troops have "died for nothing" as he seemed to wish for the kind of protests of the Vietnam War era, which included "students tearing up college campuses," to happen again. Cafferty: "When it was going this poorly in Vietnam, Americans were in the streets demanding to be heard. Students were tearing up college campuses in an effort to head off being sent away to die for nothing. But not this time -- 3,503 U.S. troops have been killed in Iraq, and nobody does anything. ... It's no wonder the Bush White House gets away with this stuff." (Transcript follows)
Cafferty began his segment by remarking that in the future, historians would find that, in describing the Bush White House, "the word 'courageous' will be in short supply." As he described Pace as "expendible" to Bush, Cafferty referred to the expendibility of "so many others who have come between President Bush's nightmare and reality." Below is a complete transcript of Cafferty's 5:08 p.m. segment from the Friday June 8 The Situation Room on CNN:
JACK CAFFERTY: When the history of the Bush White House is written, the word "courageous" will be in short supply. Rather than face Senate confirmation hearings over his reappointment as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Bush White House has decided to simply throw General Peter Pace under the bus. You see, they don't want a lot of embarrassing questions asked of General Pace about the war in Iraq. So just sacrifice him and bring in somebody else to take the rap for a while. Absolutely gutless and oh so very typical. If the war in Iraq is such a great idea, and the "Decider" insists that it is, what's the harm in letting the nation's top military men answer questions about it? But instead, they take the easy way out. Never mind the impact on General Pace -- he's expendable just like so many others who have come between President Bush's nightmare and reality. The sad thing is nobody stands up and does anything about any of this. The Democrats caved in before the fight even got going, and they were elected to stop the war. The public seems content to complain, but not much else. When it was going this poorly in Vietnam, Americans were in the streets demanding to be heard. Students were tearing up college campuses in an effort to head off being sent away to die for nothing. But not this time -- 3,503 U.S. troops have been killed in Iraq, and nobody does anything. Everything's off the table. It's no wonder the Bush White House gets away with this stuff. Here's the question: What's it going to take to bring the Iraq war to an end?

June 9, 2007 - 04:18 ET by GalvanicThe added value of a guy like Horowitz stems from the fact that he is what (I believe) was referred to in Vietnam as a chu hoi --- a former enemy who had crossed over to the friendly side. He had liberal creds before seeing the light, and he knows how they think, which is invaluable when attacking their arguments.
Cafferty is obviously frustrated that America isn't taking to the streets in any significant numbers to demonstrate against the war, ala Vietnam. Perhaps he ought to re-examine the popular myths about motivations behind anti-Vietnam War demonstations. What makes this war different?
Could there be two signficant differences?
1. While Vietnam was explained as a function of our containment policy against Communism, people at home didn't feel threatened by the Viet Cong and NVA. With regard to Iraq, 9/11 is a reality and sympathetic terrorists are fighting our troops in Iraq.
2. The Draft. Could it be that the primary motivation for on-campus demonstrations was contempt for the Draft -- which could affect all the males -- , and not the war itself? Today, our armed forces are all volunteers.

June 9, 2007 - 02:28 ET by jdhawkThe last generation of so-called "journalists" that talked down the Vietnam war are nowhere to be found when it comes to accepting or apologizing for the incarcerated, tortured, and murdered millions at the hands of insane communists after the fall of Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. Cafferty is doing his part to duplicate that trajedy in Iraq.
Meanwhile, he said this about Secretary Rumsfield, "On November 6, 2006, after reading an editorial from the Military Times calling for Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's removal, Cafferty stated "They didn’t even mention that he’s also an obnoxious jerk and a war criminal."
Perhaps, Cafferty should look at the past generation of so-called "journalist" as the real war criminals and gaze into the mirror for a look at another generation in the making.

There have been many an occasion where I've discussed the US containment policy of the Cold War in explaining the Vietnam War, and the Domino Theory comes up. Could it be that the romantic image of the angry, loud Baby Boomers bringing US involvement in SE Asia to and end, had less to do with altruistic motivations for world peace, and more to do with selfp-preservation? Were we a spoiled, selfish generation that was willing to consume the benefits of a democratic society but unwilling to sacrifice?
I doubt that this question comes up on college campuses very often.

To keep their supposed sanity they must ignore what happened in 1975 and since.
THey must also insist that their cowardice in the 1960's was virtuous and it must be followed by similar "Virture" today.

How many hours a WEEK do kids spend with their parents today?

So if they are going to go counter culture to express their new selves, where would you expect them to be?

All they know how to do is editorilize their left leaning agenda, and don't know how to "report". Their cowardly mission in life is to listen to others who "think(?)" like them, read what is put in front of them, by people who can't come up with an original thought, and continue to make believe they are "reporting".
Their time is numbered, there will be a revolution cafferty, but it is going to happen in the msm (Lsm), and YOUR kind are the ones who will be doing the protesting, singing, "Want my job back, let me try, this time I'll report, and I won't lie."

June 9, 2007 - 09:38 ET by Tom1969ca"When it was going this poorly..." Okay, Jack, let's look at the numbers (something I doubt he did before opening his pie-hole.) Looking at Vietnam casualties year-by-year, we find that the 3,500th US serviceman to die in Vietnam fell in June 1966. So, if we're using casualties to determine where we are in the war, then at that point in the Vietnam War, Gallup was reporting that 24% of Americans viewed sending troops to Vietnam as a mistake versus 60% who did not.

June 9, 2007 - 10:28 ET by mikejWhen liberals spout off, is there some sort of rule that they must have no facts about what they are saying?
Hey Jack? I would say that a reason that colleges aren't overrun with birkenstocks and Ted Kazinscky look a likes protesting the war is because it's no where near as bad. Start comparing casualities between the two and let me know what year the war in Iraq would reach the level of casualities that were reached in Vietnam? Also, there was a draft to contend with as well, so you start putting all those things together and mix em around and you get a stupid ill informed commentary that satisfies noone except the base left wing wacko's.
Thank you Jack for giving morons and idiots everywhere hope that they too can one day have a high paying, toll booth operator like job.
Coward
June 9, 2007 - 14:35 ET by jrandallCourage, courage, courage...as Dan Rather puts it...this is what "journalists" demonstrate when they ask the tough questions, report the tough stories. I guess this is what Mr. Cafferty believes he's demonstrating in his "news" piece...behind his nice little desk, reading his nice little notes, in the nice little climate controlled newsroom, with his nice pressed shirt, and colorful tie-demonstrating "courage". While our troops are out patroling hostile streets, fighting ruthless gutless terrorists, training and serving with strangers in a strange land, going without sleep, hot meals, in unclimate controlled evironments, voluntarily serving this country, away from their familys, and their normal lifesyles, serving their country, and countrymen which includes Mr. Cafferty ...doing their duty, risking and sacrificing all their tomorrows and dreams for tommorrow.
Mr. Cafferty has NOT shown the "courage" to show both sides of the Presidents actions, nor those of our brave troops actions, nor any story he covers, why, that would take the focus off his "courage", and require the "Courage" of those involved in the War on terror be shown, "Courage" is an "action" word...and all he does is talk, and talk, and talk. Mr. Cafferty, and other MSM media "journalists", celebrities, politicians, and activists only talk, this I guess is "courage". I believe Mr. Cafferty is a Coward, not worthy of even having the name of our troops pass through his unpatriotic, cowardly lips. I think Mr. Cafferty deep down knows that he is the one that is short on Courage, Integrity, Gratefullness, and Patriotism (except for patriotism to the enemies of the USA)
Thanks for letting me get this off my chest

The college antiwar protests
June 9, 2007 - 15:35 ET by moonjohnThe college antiwar protests were never about the war.
They were protesting about college students being drafted and sent to Vietnam to fight in the war.
As long as they had their college deferments, college student could have cared less about the war.
They protested the war because they personally didn’t want to die.
I had a friend at that time in college had a deferment that kept him out of the draft.
I asked him, as he was graduating, what was he going to do about being drafted.
He was not worried.
He would simply go to graduate school and get another deferment.
He would continuously seek higher education status until the war was over.
There was no meaningful college protest until the congress took away the college deferment.
College males (not men) protested because they didn’t want to die.
College females protested because they didn’t want their boyfriends to be drafted.
