Commemorating D-Day, June 6, 1944

I've gotten numerous requests to post some videos commemorating the 63rd anniversary of D-Day.

As such, I've found a number of really great ones that I hope properly capture the spirit of the occasion.

First up, this one was supposedly created by an eighth-grader for a history project. Really fabulous.

Next up, another history project by a high schooler. Just wonderful.

Finally, as no film out of Hollywood has better captured what happened 63 years ago on Omaha Beach, the opening scene from "Saving Private Ryan" is available in four parts here, here, here, and here.

No such commemoration would be complete without Abraham Lincoln's famous letter to Mrs. Lydia Bixby on the unfortunate occasion of her having lost her fifth son during the Civil War:

I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle.

I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save.

I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

The  photos from that day are one thing, but the artists certainly capture it with the same intensity and emotion if not more so, imo. Amazing stuff.

A lesson for my children

Thank you Noel,

 I am a homeschooling mom who is trying instill in my children a love of their country and a love for those who have given and those who still are. Your post was excellent and I used it as a history lesson today. I have 4 sons and a daughter and would be delighted if they wanted to serve their country. We love the military! What follows is the text of the short speech Gen. Eisenhower gave to the troops just before the invasion. I've have always loved the wording for its simplicity and the sheer optimism it represented.

Unlike today, defeat was not an option.

Note: For you liberals who might actually trouble yourselves to read this, the reference made to the United Nations has nothing to do with that collection of leeches slithering around in that building in New York.

D-Day Order speech by Dwight Eisenhower:

You will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world. 

Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped, and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely. 

But this is the year 1944. Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. 

The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeat in open battle man to man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. 

Our home fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. 

The tide has turned. 

The free men of the world are marching together to victory. I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty, and skill in battle. 

We will accept nothing less than full victory. 

Good luck, and let us all beseech the blessings of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.

In his shirt pocket Gen. Eisenhower carried the following message:

"Our landings have failed and I have withdrawn the troops. My decision to attack at this time and place was based on the best information available. The troops, the air and the Navy did all that bravery could do. If any blame or fault attaches to the attempt it is mine alone."

It is most fortunate for all of us that he never had to read it out loud. What I find inspiring, however, is that he was prepared to do so if he had to. Gen. Eisenhower was ready to step up to the plate and accept responsibility.

I was reading a few days ago small card that announced the final banquet of the National Guard unit (that my Dad (Granddad) belonged to) before being absorbed into the army. It had a list of the men going. I recognized many of the names that he had talked about, over the years and the ones that had died in this noble cause. One name stood out to me for this was my Dads prankster twin. Sam Manning was the guy with my Dad that put rotten apples in the cannon that went every where after muster in the morning. The hand in the warm water routine and a lot of pranks that I cant repeat. These men, through the story telling of my Dad live on, in my mind. I am honored that these two men served, fought, and lived through it all.  Both were great influences in my life and helped me in my decision to serve.  Without men like these we would not have the opportunities we have today to come to this site and speak freely.

Without the sacrifice of those who laid down their lives that day on the shores of France we would not be free right now.

Let us all remember their great moment in the history with dignity and honor.

I love you my Uncles and may God embrace you in his arms for me right now for what you did that day.

My dad (Merchant Marine) was supposed to be in on it on a cargo ship but missed it because he had the mumps.  He did end up making 8 crossings to Omaha and Utah beaches a week or so after the invasion.  He said that there were still explosions on the beaches from people/vehicles hitting mines.

grew up with "heroes" men AND women that served their country in war
and in peace. We had a couple neighbors, a little older than my parents, a bit
younger than my grandparents, that "were there" and would tell
"funny stories" most of the time about the boring and non-fun waiting
moments.

When I was a teen, and rather determine to enlist in the
military, only then did some of the “other stories” come out from these men and women. These were
more about the “FUBAR” incidents and trying to do things without all the
information, or supplies, or people. Whether it was disassembling and reassembling a piece of
equipment, (Usual story) or trying to get something or someone from point “A” to “D.”

It was AFTER I completed all my training and been out in
the “Real Air Force,” saw my first death first hand (an accidental
electrocution) that the “rest” of the demons” could be exercised.

I was no longer the “little neighbor-girl” I was an Airman
in the United States Air Force. I was adult (still under 21), the same age as
many of the men when they survived the attacks on Pearl Harbor and Manila. Near the same age
when they walked ashore in North Africa, Sicily, and Normandy.
Not much younger than when they froze in the Ardennes, or suffered from Tropic
disease in New Guinea, flew
over the Himalayas, or fought on Okinawa. Or
evacuated wounded in planes missing parts of the fuselage or an engine.

These are among the men and women I remember on both
Memorial Day and on Veterans’ Day. Those friends and family members that went
before me, than in spite of all that could and did go wrong, they prevailed –
Failure was not an option..

Patton among others often quoted “War is Hell.” Something
we tend to forget.

And, O Lord, give us faith. Give us faith in Thee; faith in our sons; faith in each other; faith in our united crusade. Let not the keeness of our spirit ever be dulled. When I was in 8th grade I did my final history project as a video documentary based on Cornelius Ryan's The Longest Day. It involved my dad's old-school viedo camera and the Star Wars theme music. I meant well, but it was pretty schlocky. Thanks for the link, I think I'll call my grandfather now.

I'd like to give thanks to my dad, who was an Army Scout,  participated in D-Day, Battle of the Bulge, and the Battle of Hurtgen Forest.  He was one of the guys that sneaked around behind the line gathering intelligence on the German forces.  Being an American of Irish decent (his dad, my grandfather, was from county Kilkenny,) he had the gift of gab, and his stories of the war were legendary.  He rarely mentioned the blood and guts part though.  Bye the way, he was a life long democrat.

chuchulainn--your dad--I sit here at my PC and I salute him and the wonderful men and women who were my idols. My father and brother are in that group. My dad was on the USSQuincy. They bombarded the French coast that day. He told me that they emptied the ship of ammunition, went back to England and all hands pitched in and reloaded and back they went to France. My father got hit by a piece of shrapnel on his hand. He refused a Purple Heart on the fact that it didn't take any stitches and it was the kind of wound  that would have happened just doing his daily job. My brother enlisted as soon as he could--early 1944. He went to the Pacific--Kwajalein, Eniwetok and about 3 other invasions. He and my father rarely talked about it, but my brother (aged 17 at enlistment) did tell me his ideas of being a big war hero quickly faded when he first came under fire.

Movie stars, instead of speaking out against their President, enlisted, many went into combat. The women stars did US  Savings bond tours and USO trips to entertain our girls and boys at war. I followed everything fathfully on radio and in the newspapers. I could identify all American airplanes by silhouette.

My dear sweet Jesus, how badly we have fallen. I don't know what has happened to our country. We have let it get away from us as we pursue individual gains and let the media deluge us with filth. Our politicians lie and cheat. Some of them , in spite of their protestations. would abandon our troops who so valiantly fight the war on terror.

Here's to the heros of World War 2. You will be remembered by me until I am gone.

I would like to personally thank Brig. Gen. J. Kemp McLaughlin and the Fighting Eighth for their service as well. I had dinner with "Kemp" one evening last year and if all our soldiers during that time were like him, they were a class act and one that would be hard to follow.

Note: Brig. Gen. McLaughlin as a great Memoir about his service, it's worth the read.
