In the new 40th Anniversary Edition of Rolling Stone magazine, Editor Jann Wenner asks rocker-icon Bob Dylan, "Do you worry about global warming?" and Dylan responds: "Where's the global warming? It's freezing here."
The point is that Dylan was half-serious and questioning Wenner's liberal assumptions, as were a number of other 1960s rock icons who gave some startlingly sober answers to the hyper-idealized drivel regurgitated by Wenner and other questioners. (Hat tip to Cincinnati.com.) When asked his views about the 1960s, Director Steven Spielberg replied, "Just narcissism, a collective and personal narcissism."
Actor Jack Nicholson declared: "I'm a patriotic fella and this factionalism today isn't to my liking. I'm incapable of hating a president of the United States." Stewart Brand, a former LSD user and the creator of the Whole Earth Catalog, said: "Almost everything we tried either failed hideously or didn't pan out. Communes failed, drugs went nowhere, free love led pretty much to AIDS. A lot of people thought Mao Tse Tung was a hero."
Neil Young, who wrote a famous song about Richard Nixon having soul, was asked "Can you ever imagine saying George W. Bush has soul?" and Young replied, "I'm sure he does." Of course, not everything these 1960s rockers and celebrities say is accurate or conservative or even coherent, but it is a little comforting to see that they are not blindly following the liberal playbook in every single instance, which is hard to say for much of today's top media. Read more ...
A sampling from the interview: "Do you think it's gloomy on the horizon," Editor Jann Wenner asks Bob Dylan.
"In what sense do you mean," says Dylan.
"Bob, come on," says Wenner.
"No, you come on. In what sense do you mean that?" Dylan says.
Wenner tries again: "We seem to be hell-bent on destruction. Do you worry about global warming?"
"Where's the global warming?" Dylan asks. "It's freezing here."

Talk about blowing someone's mind....which in this case with Wenner wouldn't be hard to do at all.

Bob Dylan was a great songwriter and not so good singer. He was always a very sensible and well grounded individual for his time. He allowed people to read into his music and him what they wanted to and he played along with it. For that kind of money I would have done the same.

Dylan "not so good singer"?
Wed, 05/30/2007 - 15:43 ET by RJ"not so good singer"
I disagree, unless your definition of "good singer" is crooning soothingly like (yuk!) James Taylor. Dylan used his voice like an instrument and made it say exactly what he wanted it to say.
This refusal to be drawn in to the current "cause" is nothing new for him. From the beginning, Dylan has refused to get involved in the politics of the day. The left tried many times to get him to join up, but he just said no.

The reason I got into Dylan is we used to regularly hit the Village in NYC to see Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charlie Mingus, and the rest of that GREAT era's jazz musicians. Along the way, we checked out all the new, good musicans, and Dylan just came along.

Yesterday it was "It's been a long. long time". It makes me think of Mom and Dad. Dad off in the war, Harry, too. Working on the milk truck in the morning before school, at 10 years old, bringing home my big $2.00 to Mom. Listening every night to the radio, Glenn Miller , Tommy Dorsey, the war news. I better stop before I get so lost in nostalgia, I won't find my way back to this modern world. As I close, "Chattanooga Choo choo" is starting--- Pardon me boy, is ........

Wed, 05/30/2007 - 15:46 ET by niner-four-whiskeyMan, narcissism is so completely dead on the money. Al Gore is a master marketer, I have to give him credit for that. He absolutely and completely hit the marketing nail on the head by packaging up the Global Warming hysteria in a perfect manner for marketing to gullible ex-hippies.
It speaks to them, "it's all about ME man. What can I do to make myself feel good, man." Personal power, godship over the world, me, me, me, me and more me - that's a message that just resonates through that generation as loud as bubbles through bong water.

What the subsequent generations should understand about the Sixties is truth --- that not all the changes were for the better, and the consequences were far-reaching. The so-called "Revolution" wasn't led by the Oppressed or the Destitute, but by the Pampered unwilling to part with its burgeois creature comforts. There were indeed some genuine heroes, but we also deified way too many fools and dead-enders.

Dylan and Pink Floyd
Wed, 05/30/2007 - 17:16 ET by RiharThis reminds me of a biography I read about Pink Floyd called "Saucerful of Secrets" Syd Barrett was the only true hippie but he was also insane. Poor guy died last year. The others: Roger Waters, Nick Mason, Rick Wright, and David Gilmore were really in it for the money. They also knew that their meal ticket would be up if they were druggies, so they weren't! It was all a show, and a darned good one, I love Pink Floyd and saw them live twice. I remember when I read about how mad the others got when Syd was constantly stoned and was costing them money, I thought, "good for them". That was right before they kicked Syd out of the band.
The point is they also let the hippies and stoners believe what they wanted to believe. The remaining members of Pink Floyd are all stinkin' rich now and deserve it as far as I'm concerned.
As a side note I was also present at the only Pink Floyd concert that was ever rained out. It was at Rice Stadium in Houston. Luckily it was near the end of the show. I remember some has-been hippies (sorry, that's redundant) wondering if they were coming back even after David Gilmore gave his apologies but he didn't want to get electricuted.
When a liberal speaks, the truth is busy elsewhere.

Wed, 05/30/2007 - 20:02 ET by pmohbucki started a rolling stones subscription in 1981 when i was a sophmore in high-school ... the magazine used to be about music (decent music) ... things changed drastically in the 90s ... political opinions replaced the music. the magazine was already swirling around the toilet bowl following bush's first term before utter derangement finally forced the rag down the pipes ... i cancelled my subscription in 2005. when 50 cent, ludacris and ben affleck's political opinions began to fill the pages ... i dumped rolling stone.
rolling stone has always had an inflated ego, even though its opinions are for the most part, poorly supported. this is the same magazine that criticized the musical talent of led zeppelin throughout the 70s ... that alone should indicate the worthlessness of its editors.
