MSNBC's Mika Miffed Americans Buying SUVs: 'What's Wrong With People?'

Don't you dare call Mika Brzezinski a mere newsreader. Beyond simply enunciating words off the teleprompter, the MSNBC host doesn't hesitate to share her [left-leaning] views with viewers, too.

Take a segment that aired at 3:35 pm EDT today on the topic of gasoline prices. Introducing the discussion, Mika expressed her shock and outrage that sales of SUVs have recently risen despite relatively high gas prices. Pouted Mika: "what's wrong with these people? Why do they need them?"

Mika's guest was Tyson Slocum of the liberal Public Citizen group, which is headed by Joan Claybrook, a former Carter administration official. Mika, of course, is the daughter of another Carter administration official, former National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski. A couple members of the extended Carter-administration family, having a friendly chat on a day the former president is making headlines for breaking the unwritten taboo on past White House occupants bashing the incumbent.

By the way, Public Citizen might be the last place people should look for solutions to our energy problems. Among other things, the organization is dedicated to opposing nuclear power, one of the most efficient, safest alternatives to fossil fuels.

Don't 'ya just get sick lientening to these limousine liberals. Should we ask them why they have to live in penthouses and luxury homes, go to the most expensive restaurants, eat only the "best" food, go on 20,000 dollar vacations, fly on corporate jets, etc.? God, liberals are digusting people. Hypocrites all!

Now, now now, rbosque. After all, the Hildebeast says she want to take our money, put it all on the government's pot, and then distribute it "according to our needs." And as far as "they" are concerned, only "they" need SUVs, and power, and money, and more money, and big houses, and opportunities (read $$$), not the commoners. The achievers of America are the bane of the liberals, and America, as far as they're concerned.

I can see her injecting her opinions, but I don't know her politics so I can't assume to think she's liberal. Ain't the American consumer grand?"

How about, "why are SU

How about, "why are SUV sales up when the price of gas is also up?" WITHOUT injecting political (leftist, coincidentally....) bias into the question? If you can see her injecting this blatantly-political opinion, how can you manage NOT to know her politics? Is there really any question, given her:

Personality's fine. Politics isn't, because it's bias, so we tend to bust it 'round these parts. It's likely nobody here cares about Mika's personality, but her political bias -- especially when displayed this-blatantly -- is another matter. You might even say it's the biggest possible deal for us, when it comes to the news business, but I eagerly-await your acceptance of "personality injection" as the conservatives' all-purpose excuse, the next time some Fox News anchor spouts something blatantly-biased...And that's another thing, I can't imagine any of their non-commentary anchors (think Chris Wallace) asking such an obviously-biased question, can you?? Maybe Mika, if she wants to be political and comment-on instead of just covering the news, should emulate John Gibson & stake-out a "My Word" segment that is SEPARATE FROM THE NEWS? Maybe Olberloon has a slot for her political comments on his show?

It goes against logic if you assume that the only variable people consider when purchasing a vehicle is the price of gas.

The only answer to her question is that the demand for SUVs remains high despite the price of gas, so obviously her tagging on, "What's wrong with people?" is showing a bias -- a judgement at least -- that in her opinion gas prices are so high they should decrease the demand of SUVs.

The price of postage is also at an all time high, yet folks are still buying envelopes. What's wrong with people?!?

There's one thing that stuck

There's one thing that stuck with me for years.  A guy told me he bought a Lincoln Continental, being the conservative I am, I wondered aloud how much gas was needed to run such a car.  His response:  "If you have to ask how many miles per gallon the car gets you have no business buying a Lincoln."

If you can afford a $40k+ vehicle, you don't give a hill of beans what the gas mileage is.  The same can be said of Al Gore and his electric use at $1,000 plus a month.

15 mpg towing a rig is not bad at all...I used to get about 9 in my Grand Wagoneer (towing a 23' boat).  Oh, how I miss them both.

Congrats to you.  Conspicuous consumption at it's very finest.

I guess this idiot reporter would want to know what's wrong with you, tho!  :)

Does one tow a boat to work?

Does one tow a boat to work?  To clarify the point I was making, if someone buys a vehicle for status (Lincoln) or SUV or a pickup or a bulldozer for that matter for utility value, gas mileage is of only secondary concern if at all.

Claiming they don't get why someone buys a SUV only indicates that idiot reporter hasn't done their J-O-B to investigate and report why people do so.   It also presumes (bias) there is no legitimate criteria to purchase a vehicle other than gas mileage, a false presumption and an arrogant one at that.

Reading your comment made me

Reading your comment made me think of an argument that is used against SUV's, namely that they are involved in more fatal crashes because of their size.  While I won't argue with that, do the anti-SUV'ers want us to drive little cracker boxes which put is more at risk of being a fatality?

I may not need an SUV in terms of whether I will maximize utility, but I want it if only for the fact that it may help keep me and my family safer.

Herr Claybrook, safety nazi extroadinaire.

First of all, Joan Claybrook and her not-so-merry band of safety nazis, including that automotive illiterate Ralph Nader, who probably couldn't change the spark plug in a lawn mower if his miserable, unhappy life depended on it, should be riding a bench in the federal pokey to this day, as far as I am concerned.

This hideous woman almost single-handedly forced carmakers to install airbags in their cars long before the technology was was really ready. As a result, many people were needlessly injured (my mom was nearly killed when hers deployed FOR NO REASON), and some even killed, because of this obstinate, busy-body bureaucrat.

As such, I would automatically discount anything said by her or anyone representing her organization.

And whose business is it, anyway, what type of vehicles people choose to buy and drive themselves and their loved ones around in? If Tyson Slocum thinks I am going to drive on the interstates around Atlanta in a Prius, he's nuts!

No, I'm driving The Panzer!

Why do they need them?

I can answer this one. I need one because they have certain advantages if you happen to be in an accident. I need one to carry my granddaughter and her giggling team mates to soccer games. I need one to pull a boat. I need one because I can take it off road. I need one when it snows. I need one when we pull our rather large camper. I need one because I like it.

I hope I have answered his stupid question.

SUV

Right on the money, CT!  I live in the snow belt and I refuse to be trapped in my house when a blizzard is raging, hence the 4WD guzzler in my garage.  Sure I wish it gave better mpg, but it is what it is, that's why I bought it.  I also like sittin' up high enough to spot the numerous deer before I hit 'em.  It's reliable and it's paid for, and no bimbo from MSNBC is gonna make me get rid of it.

It would be interesting to

It would be interesting to see her present that question to Al Gore, Barack Obama, and others who also want to tell us what we should drive while they use as much energy as any dozen or so of us.
