If you believe the hype from the open-borders crowd about how illegal immigrants "are doing jobs other won't do," you would have to wonder how this ever happened (the following is from a May 11 company press release):
Swift & Company Announces Return of Standard Staffing Levels at All Four Domestic Beef Processing Facilities
Pork Processing Facilities Resumed Normal Production in March
Swift & Company today reported its return to standard staffing levels at all four domestic beef processing facilities after the detention and removal, on December 12, 2006, of approximately 950 Swift Beef employees by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Immigration and Customs Enforcement ("ICE") division.
The December 2006 ICE event also involved two Swift Pork processing facilities. As the Company announced on April 10, 2007, Swift's domestic pork operations returned to normal levels in March 2007. ICE detained and removed a total of nearly 1,300 Swift Beef and Swift Pork employees during the December 2006 event.
A terse Associated Press story on the announcement that gained very little circulation made sure to remind us that "Operations at Swift plants in Colorado, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Texas and Hyrum, Utah, were suspended for several hours on Dec. 12 while immigration agents arrested 1,217 workers. No company managers have been charged."
Somehow, AP "forgot" to tell us that, as reported by the Greeley, Colorado Tribune the previous week (requires free registration), that at just one of the facilities involved:
..... 261 warrants (were issued) for workers in Greeley who were using other people's Social Security numbers or names to gain employment at Swift. It was unclear how the workers obtained those identities.
ICE discovered the identity thefts after victims from different parts of the country reported suspicious changes in their credit. Some people received Social Security statements that showed a history of employment at Swift, but the victims had never worked there.
Back to the main topic -- How did Swift manage to find all those (presumably legal) workers? A One News Now story has what will be a "surprising" answer for the economic wing of the open-borders lobby:
Steve Elliot is president of Grassfire.org, an organizing center for conservative activists. He is calling the company's achievement the "Swift Miracle."
..... Swift had no problem finding people to fill the positions formerly held by illegal aliens, the Grassfire.org spokesman contends. "Just a few months after they were busted by government officials, they had no problem filling those positions with Americans who are willing to do those jobs and earn a living in the meat-packing industry," he says.
Elliot insists the meat company's story completely debunks the argument by advocates for open borders that the U.S. government must give amnesty to millions of illegal aliens in the country. "[T]his just blows holes in one of the biggest arguments of the amnesty agenda: that illegals are coming here to do jobs Americans won't do," he adds. "It's simply not true," he says; "Americans will do these jobs if given the opportunity."
Thanks to the "Swift Miracle," Eliot says, those who support the open borders/amnesty agenda can no longer use the jobs excuse to justify the flood of illegal immigrants into the U.S.
The filling of the Swift jobs is yet another against-the-grain immigration-related story that Old Media has downplayed. Yet it "somehow" has found the time and attention for:
- "Swift raids leave immigrant families separated"
- "Impact of Swift raid still being felt"
- "Greeley mayor urges changes in ICE raids"
- "Somali Workers Quit Over Prayer Dispute" (at a Swift plant)
________________________________
Note: An unexcerpted paragraph in the One News Now story contains claims by Elliot that "Swift is reporting in the company's own quarterly report "that they are 'up to normal production levels' and that their operational and cost position has improved."
Those claims are incorrect. The company's related April 10 press release (PDF converted to HTML) says that "US Pork Operations (are) Back at Normal Levels .... (and) US Beef Operations (are) On Track to Return by Summer," and only notes that "multiple operational and cost position improvements are under way, and we are beginning to realize the benefits of those programs." No favorable or unfavorable comparison to the company's previous cost position is made. Nothing in the 10-Q Quarterly report contradicts that statement in the press release.

Jobs Americans wouldn't do
May 20, 2007 - 12:34 ET by NJ DanThis always gets me.......jobs Americans wouldn't do. The amnesty crowd thinks these 20 mil illegals and their decendants will always be working at these jobs. In 20 years, as they send their kids to college, like every other immigrant group has done in the past, what do we do? Import another 20 mil to keep picking the lettuce? Amnesty is the wrong approach. Americans will do these jobs. So what if the labor costs go up and we pay a little more? Better than what we have now.

May 20, 2007 - 12:44 ET by happyuscitizenWell the Swift update sinks that ship christened the "S.S. Jobs Americans Won't Do!", now doesn't it?
I just read an article entitled "America's New Know Nothings" by Fareed Zakaria of Newsweek. The story claims that all of the candidates except McCain are idiotic when it comes to immigration. I posted the link below in case there are some interested in reading it. Drivel in my opinion, and a good reminder why I cancelled my Newsweek subscription years ago.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18754292/site/newsweek/
It is the same drivel time and time again. The Senate and I am sure eventually the Congress will keep trying to shiv us in the kidneys whilst they try an ram this garbage piece of legislation down our throats.
As a Naturalized citizen I ask that all of my fellow Americans that post here will call there Congressional representatives and Senators during normal business hours. I don't know how true this is but I have read on immigration related sites that many Representatives and Senators feel that since they are not getting a lot of voice mails from their constituents voicing displeasure with immigration legislation, they being ignorant fools, feel emboldened to keep on with their back door sellouts of the American People. The reason being, as I have found out calling after hours to my reps, the message many callers are getting is that they are unable to record your message because the voicemail is full! Nice right?
Now is the time to demand that border enforcement be the first and foremost priority of these Washington hacks. The only way we can make our voices heard is to have their phones ringing off the hook to where their staffs can't get anything done.
I am going to take a cheapshot here, but if you all love this country as much as I do, then quit your moaning on this blog, and get something done!

Illegal Immigration Bill Plan
May 21, 2007 - 13:29 ET by bigtimerbotg,
Speaking of Senators....they are speaking on the floor right now about this illegal immigration bill, Sessions is speaking at the moment and he said he was promised the bill would be done by Thursday by Kennedy, then Friday, well they didn't get it until two in the morning Saturday...it was supposed to be around 330 pages...it is close to a 1,000 now he says...
The plan was to file for cloture on last years bill this afternoon, then they are going to vote the new bill as an amendment to last years bill....this is how they plan on ramming this through the Senate and House.
We need to be calling all week long up and until this is over...

Of course it's not true, it never has been. The only ones who buy into that nonsense are the same type of mush-brains that buy into the global warming disaster nonsense.
When Americans aren't doing these jobs, it's most likely due to 2 reasons:
1. Depressed wages forced down because of the widespread use of illegal labor.
2. They don't want to work in an environment where 90% of their fellow employees aren't American, and don't speak English. If Americans wanted to work in a foreign country, they would move to one.
Now, inevitably, someone will post that this is racist, and that I am a racist for posting it. Whatever. Is it also racism when these illegals gravitate to enclaves filled with fellow illegals from a similar culture, making no effort to assimilate into this country? Of course not, it's human nature. We tend to associate with what we are familiar.

May 20, 2007 - 15:24 ET by misterbillckc help me out here--I must be a racist because I do not see how anyone can accuse your post as racist.
When our forebears established the immigration schedule one can see that they intended America to receive immigrant from wide racial and ethnic environments. The wisdom of that was to keep us as a "melting pot" not a multicultural nation. I was born in an environment (at home, no hospital) that was almost exclusively Irish Catholic. My parents were just a few who were of another nationality. Over the years, the Italians , the Polish, the Lithuanians moved in. (Other nationalities too!) You can see that learning to speak English was a very wise thing to do. Also neighbors became friends regardless of ethnicity. At that time , the issue of racial integration did not happen. Our black citizens were still excluded from the complete American dream. That too has changed over the years.
Multiculturism will kill America. We need a balance of immigrants.Proximity to our borders is no justification for anyone to sneak in. They are damning themselves by their very numbers. Call me a racist, but I do not want ANYONE in this country illegally.
If I were to move to France (God help me) for work, I would bust my chops to learn how to speak French as quickly as I could.

The bigger question on jobs t
May 20, 2007 - 15:49 ET by dscottThe bigger question on jobs that ordinary Americans won't do has technological and demographic implications. Every sector of the economy is being affected by the increased efficiency that technology brings. Everytime an efficiency increase occurs, the skill level of the remaining jobs increases or at minimum the no skill and highly skilled jobs are eliminated. If immigration isn't halted soon, in 2025 according to the Census Bureau, the population of the US will have increased by 50 million. That's less than 20 years away!!! Why do we need 400,000 new immigrants a year when our population will have increased by almost 20%????
We are already having problems with refineries making enough gasoline, what are we going to do in 2025 with more cars on the road???? Something has to give here, from a practical standpoint we need a freeze on immigration and increased engine efficiencies otherwise we are heading for a train wreck of massive proportions. If nothing is done soon, we will have $10/gallon gas.

May 20, 2007 - 16:15 ET by misterbilldscott -good insight - there is more to meet the eye-than what the first glance shows. We are laymen, why does it take people like Nbers to plainly state what our elected officials should see??? I don't know the percentage but every year more and more foods and fruits are being picked by machine. I was in cotton country in Alabama last year and saw the big machines picking cotton--didn't see anyone in the fields. Drove by the gin--saw trucks full of baled cotton and hardly a oul around to work the yard.
So what then do we do with the numbers of workers (@400,000 a year) who are being idled?? What jobs will there be for High School graduates who do not want to go to college???
In the world's history, every time there has been a perceived shortage of food, water or some form of sustenance for the population, the answer has always been war. Before the war, usually there is a high crime rate, the world will be full of Jean Valjeans. What man will not steal to feed his family? And as you state, there may not be enough gas and other commodities to support that huge population. I am reminded of the young lady who wrote to our newspaper--(paraphrased) "I do not see why we have a problem in America with a growing population. I flew from the east Coast to the West Coast and I saw thousands of square miles with no houses or buildings." Her glasses were provided by the opticians that provide our Senators and Congressmen with their vision needs.
I wish we could hold a special election right now for Congress and the Senate. I would look for working men/women or military men/women who understand the world and want to make it better. I do not want a professional Senate and Congress. Long terms result in the old "can't see the forest for the trees".

May 21, 2007 - 14:18 ET by dscottHere's a problem, how big is the so called Agricultural sector that actually needs low skilled people to pick the food? By my count from the Bureau of Labor Statistics that's around 300,000. So what the heck are 12 million illegals doing here??? Is anyone seriously saying that all or most of these people are working in landscaping and farms? This is a joke and a sick one at that.

IMHO farm jobs should be a pretty good motivator for kids to stay in school rather than settle for a lowskilled job.
But in a society that has the stupid notion that poverty should be comfortable, you can't really sell the concept.

May 21, 2007 - 13:27 ET by BeowulfIf it's a choice between this bill and nothing, I pick nothing. All this bill will do is:
1. Piss off most Americans.
2. Offer those few illegals who truly want to become citizens the opportunity to jump to the head of the line.
3. And do absolutely nothing to the vast majority of illegals who don't really care about their citizenship, can't afford the fines and back taxes, and won't change a thing about their status.
Compromise is only justified when there is a net gain for the country. This ain't it.

May 21, 2007 - 13:35 ET by Cool ArrowAnd once this bill has passed, the Libs go directly to the courts and argue the $5000 fine and the trip back home are contrary to the Equal Protection clause.
Then we're stuck with a bill riddled with 'pick and choose' options.
