cheering falwell's fall
May 19, 2007 - 07:44 ET by Tim GrahamIn my e-mail, this note about compassionate non-conservatives:
“And I think it's a pity there isn't a hell for him to go to. … [Falwell is] a little toad … this horrible little person … I’m glad to see that he skipped the rapture and was found on the floor of his office. …” --Vanity Fair writer Christopher Hitchens, video posted on homepage of The Huffington Post.
Falwell was “a hateful pig.” – blogger John Aravosis
“The gates of hell swing open and Satan welcomes his beloved son.” – blogger Amanda Marcotte, former blogger for John Edwards’ campaign
“Won’t the good preacher be shocked when he finds himself at the gates of Hell this morning! Man, I would love to post that video on YouTube. I must go now and mourn, as I can hardly contain my sorrow.” – Wayne Besen, author, blogger, former spokesman for Human Rights Campaign

May 19, 2007 - 08:12 ET by rimsky"I'm glad to see that he skipped the rapture.." And this is from one of Time's 100 most influential people. I wonder, does this mean that Hitchens believes in the Rapture?

May 19, 2007 - 08:25 ET by SouthJersey1953I have never seen such 'hatred' expressed on the death of anyone......This really proves to me that Falwell was, indeed, doing God's work.
Ann Coulter, as usual, said it best: Despite venomous attacks and overwhelming pressure to adopt the fashionable beliefs of cafe society, Falwell never wavered an inch in acknowledging Jesus before men. Luckily, Jesus' full sentence, quoted at the beginning of this column is: "All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved."

May 19, 2007 - 16:49 ET by curiousAdmitting that there are alot of hateful people in the world, of all political colors, I suspect that Falwell was hated less for doing god's work, than for the hateful way he went about it at times. In all my reading of the bible, I've found less than a handful of condemnations of homosexuality and/or of the wrath it can bring. On the other hand, the number of instances in which we're exhorted to forgive our enemies, to care for the poor, to give comfort to the sick, to shelter the homeless, to feed the hungrey, etc, run into the thousands. And when asked which is the most important commandment, Jesus didn't answer that we should love god and hate our homosexual neighbor. Yet at times, Falwell gave the impression that he did. Had Falwell spent as much time practicing christian love toward all Americans as he did politicing in dividing our country into Republicans and sinners, some of those sinners might have had some good things to say about him.
Contrary to the word of Falwell, god isn't a Republican, and any Christian who thinks otherwise only shows how little they understand their own religion.
The hate spewed above about Falwell is wrong. But let's not forget that he was responsible for his share of such mindless hate.

GE just rolled out a new multi-view color ECHO monitoring system. I got to see one of these bad boys up close & it's a real beauty. It's so new in fact, that many major US hospitals still don't have it yet. I wonder if Cuba has one. . .or even will?

Immigration Bill
May 19, 2007 - 16:21 ET by shawn228The fact that the Senate came up with a plan that will give 10 millions plus illegals in this country amnesty is IMO disgraceful. CAMPAIGN AGAINST BARBARA WALTERS BEGINS
Catholic League
On
today’s edition of “The View,” a discussion on the propriety of male
nannies led Rosie O’Donnell to declare that she would never hire one to
care for her adopted children. Barbara Walters asked her, “Are you
worried about homosexual tendencies? Is that what you are saying?”
O’Donnell replied, “No, pedophilia has nothing to do with homosexual”
[sic]. To which Walters said, “Oh, pedophilia.” Shortly thereafter,
O’Donnell asked Walters if she would have hired a male nannie for her
daughter when she was growing up. Walters hesitated, and before she
could speak, Joy Behar interjected with the comment, “A priest
perhaps?” O’Donnell grimaced and the audience roared with laughter.
Catholic League president Bill Donohue outlined his strategy as follows:
“It
is obvious that Barbara Walters is begging for a fight with Catholics.
Consider it done. Over the past year, the Catholic League has
registered several complaints with Walters, who is co-owner of the
show, executive producer Bill Geddie, and Anne Sweeney, co-chair,
Disney Media Networks and president, Disney-ABC Television Group. None
has replied. While the anti-Catholic bigots have either been Rosie
O’Donnell or Joy Behar (today’s culprit), the person most responsible
for allowing this unrelenting assault on Catholic sensibilities is
Walters.
“Accordingly, beginning in mid-June, we will
commence a public relations campaign against Barbara Walters. When
we’re finished, so too will be her once stellar reputation. Today was
the last straw.”

Cadets Battle On Home Front
Marya Rosenberg, of the Upper East Side, recalls of her decision to go to the US Military Academy after her graduation from elite Hunter HS.
"I had one girl ask me what I was thinking about doing for college, and when I told her, she said, 'How could you do something so immoral?' They made fun of me in the yearbook."
Rosenberg said she was hurt by the response she got at her old high school - not from kids but from teachers.
"One of the teachers, when I walked down the hall in my uniform, yelled, 'No blood for oil!' " she said. "Then I talked to my old art history teacher . . . and I wanted to tell him I'm taking a bunch of art history courses now. He was, like, 'Oh, so you'll know what [the] buildings are before you drop bombs on them.' "
Looks like things have not changed on the left in academia since I was an ROTC cadet 23 years ago. And they wonder why the military gives them ZERO respect.

thanks for the links, Jimmie has really become a wart. He just reminds me so much of the kid in elementary school who would hit you then complain if he got hit. What I learned from the birds
May 20, 2007 - 19:02 ET by dmntd1Here, in my hometown, we have an alternative news-weekly. Billed as the alternative to our generally left-leaning regular paper. This paper usually fills itself with a couple of well-written articles bashing the Police Department, and small-town people trying to make it big.
To be fair, it has some of the best written local-interest, non-biased writings in it as well. What really intriqued me, this week, is the following letter to the editor. It just struck a chord with me. I hope you all enjoy it as well:
WHAT I LEARNED FROM THE BIRDS
I have always thrown my scrap bread and such out to the birds to feed them. They are living creatures and have to eat. My neighbors and I have talked about how, in the last few years, there have been fewer and fewer cardinals and songbirds and a tremendous influx of blackbirds, crows, and grackles. They move in and chase the birds that were consider nicer and more desirable out. And they eat and they eat and they eat. And once a year, usually in the spring, they have baby birds like themselves so there are more of them.
I got a bird feeder. I hung it on my back porch and filled it with seed. Within no time we had dozens of birds taking advantage of the continuous flow of free and easily accessible food. But then the birds started building nests in the boards of the patio, above the table, and next to the barbecue. Then came the poop. It was everywhere: on the patio tile, the chairs, the table . . . everywhere.
Some of the birds turned mean. They would dive-bomb me and try to peck me, even though I had fed them out of my own pocket. Other birds were boisterous and loud. They sat on and around the feeder, and in the tree branches overhead, and squawked and screamed at all hours of the day and demanded that I fill it when it got low on food. They even got to know me and would fly in low and wait when they saw me come outside, just expecting food, whether I had any or not, such as when I was just walking out to my car. They even watched me through my kitchen window. My neighbor complained that he was being inconvenienced by the birds’ moving over to his property and the extra amount of bird poop on his car.
After a while, it was unpleasant just to try to sit on my deck any more, so finally I took down the bird feeder, and in a week most of the birds were gone. I cleaned up their mess. Soon the back yard was like it used to be — quiet, serene, and no one demanding their “rights” to a free meal.
As a 19th-century poet said, you can learn a lot from watching nature.
Our government gives out free food, subsidized housing, free medical care, and free education and allows anyone born here to be an automatic citizen. Others come in and try to take advantage of the gravy train as well. This is a country that punishes those who work, try to get an education, try to take care of themselves, try to do things the “right” and traditional way. Like the flowers, the birds neither reap nor sow; some at least give back to us with their song and their beauty. Then there are others that merely exist — they had their own songs and actions and characteristics but for the most part contribute nothing. It’s a give-and-take situation — we give, and they take.
Maybe it’s time for all of us to take down the bird feeder.
