NBC's Williams Cues Bill Clinton to Blast Bush Admin: 'How Much Is Their Fault?'

Photo of Brent Baker.

Brian Williams turned over just under five minutes of Wednesday's NBC Nightly News to a live interview with former President Bill Clinton about his effort to address global warming, a fawning session which amounted to little more than pontificating from Clinton cued up by Williams, who set the tone by asking: “What does the current administration have to answer for? How much of it, in your view, is their fault?” The ostensible news hook for the segment: The “Clinton Climate Initiative's” announcement of “a global Energy Efficiency Building Retrofit Program.”

The three other questions Williams managed to squeeze in between Clinton's long-winded answers to the easy inquiries: “What have you done in your personal life that contributes to better environmental health, let's say, in this country?” Clinton insisted: “I have a hybrid vehicle which I drive, which I drove to New York to work today.” Does the former President of the United States really drive his own car and not ride in a Secret Service-driven limo? And where do the agents ride in a puny hybrid? [Update: or it could be a not so puny hybrid SUV] Williams didn't ask, but instead treated Clinton as an energy use expert: “For the people who find it hard to believe that replacing bulbs in their home or changing the vehicle they drive could make a difference, what's your counter-argument?” Finally, Williams turned cute: “How much of your personal time these days are you spending as, let's call it, political advisor to somebody close to you?”

The MRC's Brad Wilmouth painstakingly labored to correct the closed-captioning against the video to provide this transcript of the 4:45 segment on the May 16 NBC Nightly News made up mostly of Clinton's long, uninterrupted answers:

BRIAN WILLIAMS: Former President Bill Clinton today announced a broad initiative to make buildings in big cities around the world more energy efficient by renovating them and bringing them up to speed, at least environmentally. It is the latest gathering on the hot topic of going green, and the former President's been kind enough to duck out of what's going on across town to join us live here tonight. Mr. President, when did this reach, in your view, critical mass, and what does the current administration have to answer for? How much of it, in your view, is their fault?

BILL CLINTON: Well, I think we've known now for many years that the world was warming at an unsustainable rate, that it's caused by human activity, and that we have to try to turn it around. There's still some debate about how bad it's going to get, how soon. And some people debate whether we can turn it around in a way that helps, rather than hurts, the economy. I'm convinced we can. But, you know, we did the Kyoto climate change treaty in the middle of my second term as President. And before that, we had had an attempt to make a car that tripled gas mileage with big auto companies. We undertook to green the White House and put conservation in the federal government's programs, which took the equivalent of hundreds of thousands of cars off the road. And we added about a billion dollars of clean energy research. But I think that in the last few years, as the evidence has mounted, we've seen more tax credits, we've seen more R and D, but the administration has not been willing to, in effect, limit carbon emissions and require reduction and then create a market by pricing carbons so that we can trade carbon credits, and the really efficient companies can find the most effective way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and others can pay them to do it. That's what I think should be done.

WILLIAMS: I asked a question of Senator Obama in the Democratic debate I'd like to ask of you. What have you done in your personal life that contributes to better environmental health, let's say, in this country?

CLINTON: I have a hybrid vehicle which I drive, which I drove to New York to work today. I have done an exhaustive audit on my home in New York. It's over a 100-year-old farmhouse that leaks like a sieve, and I've undertaken already over the last few years some energy efficiency measures, including replacing most of the lights with compact fluorescent bulbs. But I'm about to do a total overhaul of that with Hillary's concurrence. But I've got to do it at a time when we're going to be mostly out of the house. And, of course, my presidential library won a Silver Leads rating from the Leadership and Environmental and Energy Design and we're about to upgrade it to the top rating of platinum. So it's gonna be one of the most efficient big buildings in the entire world.

WILLIAMS: I know you're after big-ticket items like big buildings in big cities, but for the people who find it hard to believe that replacing bulbs in their home or changing the vehicle they drive could make a difference, what's your counter-argument?

CLINTON: Well, if you look at, let's just take lighting. Buildings account for 80 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions in an old city like New York, about a third in America as a whole. About 20 percent of that is straight from lighting. In a place like Las Vegas, it's more. But if everyone in America would go out and replace all their incandescent light bulbs with compact florescent ones, or the even more efficient LED ones, here's how it works. They cost three times as much, they use one-fourth as much energy, they last, depending on the price, five to 10 times as long. So if you screw them in and use them, you will save money the first year. Even after paying more for the bulbs, your net savings will be 25 to 40 percent because of lower utility rates. And you can cut the greenhouse gas emissions for buildings to approximately 20 percent. So it's a huge, huge deal.

WILLIAMS: How much of your personal time these days are you spending as, let's call it, political advisor to somebody close to you?

CLINTON: Not much. We, you know, we talk every day, of course, and I try to do some fund-raisers for her here in New York so she can be down in the Senate doing her job or be out in the primary states. And people here will normally take me in. And, of course, when we're, we talk about the big issues a lot, we talk about health care and the economy and climate change and foreign policy, as we have all of our lives. But I'm not very much involved in the day-to-day operations of the campaign. I do what I'm asked to do.

WILLIAMS: All right, Mr. President, good luck with your gathering in New York. Thank you for taking time out to talk to us tonight.

CLINTON: Thank you, Brian.

As many of you like me that k

As many of you like me that know the Clintons like every square inch of my glorious naked body, the Clinton's have made entire careers out of getting a pass from the media, back in the 80s there was criticism of a paper called the Arkansas Democrat Gazette, they never brought up anything that would hurt the Clintons. Here we are today, Hillary Clinton running for President and damn if the media isn't doing it again..........

Bubba's Big Grin

Look at that big grin on Bubba’s face.  That is the grin someone has when they are talking with an old friend, with their guard down, not having to worry about what they are saying.  He sure wasn’t grinning like that when he was being interviewed by Chris Wallace on Fox News!

Jimbo says - "There is a fine line between freedom of speech and treason"

I notice

I notice that Clinton never really did answer the first question asked of him. Instead, he went on some nonsense about what he did in his administration -- out of which Kyoto was mentioned, but never noted as never becoming law.

Dude... lighten up..

Of course.  He deliberately

Of course.  He deliberately avoided making climate change an issue during his reign because his economic advisors, such as Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin (formerly of Goldman & Sachs) told him that it would kill economic growth.  The Dems stood to lose a lot of campaign contributions.  When the Kyoto language came back to Washington, even his Democratic allies on the Hill told him it was D.O.A.

Instead, Clinton issued 'green' Executive Orders on his way out the door --- and in between the pardons of Marc Rich and the Puerto Rican terrorists --- so he could make absurd statements like the one above and leave the burden on his successor.

And his devoted followers will repeat the nonsense over and over again.

The Hybrid

Liberals must be thanking some higher power for Toyota. They all can claim they're doing "something" for the environment because they're driving a hybrid car.  WOW, a hybrid car.  If the whole country had a hybrid car, we still couldn't meet the goals set forth in Kyoto.

Never argue with an idiot.  They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

You have to consider...

Liberals are in a bit of a bind really... Let's look at the loop.

Liberals claim to support the poor. The poor typically drive very dirty, gas guzzling vehicles, that pollute, pollute, pollute. Liberals applaud the invention of the "Hybrid", but fail to point out that it costs considerably more then a standard engine, when they tell everyone to buy one. So -- a poor person goes out to buy a new car, if at all possible. Can they afford a Hybrid? No, of course not -- so they buy another gas guzzling monster of a vehicle. The liberal solution? Guaranteed... the liberal solution to this endless circle will be the government subsidizing Hybrid cars (hell, even buying them out right) for the poor, in an effort to clean up the environment. Of course, this will mean higher taxes. The taxes, on their mind, will be wonderous for two reasons: One, they get to buy their cars. Two, they get to collect the money they lose out on gasoline tax from the use of Hybrids!

<sigh>

Beware the future of the Hybrid...

I just knew if we tried hard enough, we could find *something* good about disgraced ex-president BJ Clinton. ;-)

Our Former President

That’s an accurate depiction of our former President.  I also like to refer to him as The Perjury President.  Or the Impeached President.  Or the Disbarred President.  Depends on my mood that day.

LOL, of course not. Because Billy Jeff knows that the majority of the blame for 9/11 lays at his feet.

Why else would he have his DNC minions maneuver to "appoint" someone-who should have been a witness on the 9/11 Commission, not a member of said Commission-to said Commission?

And why did he have his National Security Advisor smuggle out and then destroy documents from the National Archives?

And why would he explode in rage when a member of the "objective" media called him for not taking out bin Laden when he had the chance?

(sound of crickets)

Actually, Bal, you should be defending Falwell. He actually blamed 9/11 on Americans. Just like Rosie did.

Lemmings

Agreed.  Now think of the ridiculous number of people in this country who would vote to put him and his wife back in the White House.  I’m so thankful it isn’t the majority though!

Jimbo says - "There is a fine line between freedom of speech and treason"

I'm surprised at you, Bal.

I'm surprised at you, Bal.  Very weak.

Yeah, Clinton the Liar, is quite responsible himself for much of the reason why al-Queda became so emboldened against us.  He's not a real man.  He should have taken the blame for 9/11 on himself.

Jerry Falwell wasn't the President of the United States when he said the things he did.  Big difference between the two, don't cha think?

" 'Fred's Slacks'  is a winner!!"

What a waste of time. Reading

What a waste of time. Reading, or gleaning over this ridiculous interview, I wasted time I'll never get back.  BJ really said, imho, nothing.  "We did the Kyoto climate change treat," what the heck does this actually mean?

From what I understand, this treaty was never brought before congress for a vote.  I may be wrong, could anyone enlighten me about that?

This constant talk about global warming really vexes me.  If the planet really is warming, wouldn't that help save millions in heating fuel during the winter time? also if there is global warming maybe BJ, and algore should look at my winter heating bill, and I use my fireplace.

Count me as a person who doesn't believe in this nonsense.  Everything in life goes in cycles, and though I live a life in constant anxiety, and needs meds and counseling, GW is one thing I don't worry about, especially when the weather persons can't forcast the weather accurately for more than five days.

You are correct, jmad...he

You are correct, jmad...he never sent it to the Senate for ratification (a necessary step, since it was a treaty) because he knew it would not be ratified. When he says"We did the Kyoto treaty", what he means is that he tried to implement it on his own, by using executive orders and multiple new EPA regulations that did not need a vote. This is why Clinton was a hero to Paul Begala, who once said "Stroke of the pen, law of the land. Kinda cool."

Thanks for the conformation motherbelt.  Agreed on the rest of your post.

Last question, Mr. Presiden

Last question, Mr. President (God, I wish that were still true in the literal sense!). Anyway, what would you say to those who still don't realize that your Presidency was the "golden age" of the 20th century, and that if we can just get you back into the White House by getting around the 22nd amendment by electing your wife, who, of course, we know would never be your puppet, but would be an amazing President in her own right, we will have a new time of prosperity and peace, and good will, and admiration for America, and end the war in Iraq, and convert al Queda to Americans if not Christianity, and....oh, was I talking out loud????

Efficient bulbs it's a huge huge deal -- slick

Efficient bulbs it's a huge huge deal -- slick.

Buildings are 1/3rd of emissions - bulbs are 20% of that one third. That means total lighting is 6%. If every single bulb in the USA is replaced, that's a 4.5% reduction (assuming the 1/4 electric use).

So, assuming complete perfection, the huge huge deal is 4.5%.

Maybe that's why people laugh when they hear it.

In fact, people have known for decades that lighting is the smallest part of their personal utility bills.

Yes, even though every one of us knows that, it's a huge, huge deal- well - it is for the ELITE - who consider it an offense on their lives to change the bulbs.

So slick willie, you and Hillary have had tens of millions of dollars for years, and you still haven't made your own home efficient. You have to be "out of your home" - in order for efficiencies to be installed, and in fact you could have afforded that just as easily, but have chosen not to.

But of course, your lib LIHEAP program replaces everything, as do the average Americans - while they live in their residence - unable to afford the luxury of "not being there".

Yeah, the slicksters of the world haven't got a clue.

Bush's home he built is a passive water recycling geothermal model of conservation, but the slut crew two have a gigantic leaking sieve their massive millions can't seem to insulate.

What shameful hypocrits you left wing liars are. I'm disgusted with the lot of you.

Efficient bulbs it's a huge

Efficient bulbs it's a huge huge deal -- slick.

Read the first post (from me!) in this blog to see the true cost of those compact fluorescent bulbs. You can't just throw them in the trash (sez Uncle Sam).

So slick willie, you and Hill

So slick willie, you and Hillary have had tens of millions of dollars for years and you still haven't made your own home efficient. You have to be "out of your home" in order for efficiencies to be installed...

Excellent point! They've been in that house for what, 6 years, and nothing's been renovated yet?! They can't afford to rent another house in the area or stay in a nice hotel during renovations? Any why did Mr. Environment buy that house in the first place if it leaks like a sieve? They couldn't find any other houses in the neighborhood that were more energy efficient, or just build their own energy efficient house? Oh, that's right. They were in a big hurry to get little miss carpet bagger up to NY to win her coveted senate seat in 2000. What an a-hole!!

Missed opportunity

If only we could turn back the clock to '92 and get the first President Bush to rip Bill Clinton into tiny little pieces during the campaign.  There were so many vulnerable spots, and yet Bush seemed unwilling to really attack this "bozo" (Bush's word).  A well run campaign against Bill Clinton would have relegated him to a footnote in history and spared us several messes that have yet to be cleaned up--and none of them have to do with Monica.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

I wouldn't worry about Clinto

I wouldn't worry about Clinton.

Our number one mess right now is Iraq and Clinton had nothing to do with it.

How about you tell Brian Williams and the rest of the MSM to shut up with the Clinton talk and stop wallowing in the past? I mean, they flap their collective gums about Clinton every day. I sure wish the wallowing Clintons would go back to their pigpen too.

P.S. Clinton attacked Iraq also.

A day without NewsBusters is like a day without sunshine.

Clinton had nothing to do wit

Clinton had nothing to do with Iraq?  Perhaps, in a strict sense..  i.e., he didn't actually make the decision to invade and depose Saddam.  You're right about that.  He wouldn't ever have the stones to make that kind of decision.

However, in a macro sense, he had every bit as much to do with it as anybody.  He had opportunities to eliminate OBL, but didn't.  He could have decided to invade Iraq, and I doubt he would have met much resistance with that idea.  The MSM wouldn't have given him ANY trouble, and certainly not Congress at the time, which had plenty of hawks willing to fight.  But again, no stones.

No, a blanket statement that Clinton had nothing to do with Iraq doesn't wash.

Clinton's rules of engageme

Clinton's rules of engagement (which were bipartisan-popular at the time, BTW) consisted of blowing up any radars that lit up aircraft patrolling the "no fly zone" while continuing a counterproductive, cruel, and blatantly-corrupt UN "Oil For Food" program. Somehow, for some people, this policy increased US security despite the lessons of history, if not chess, or hornet's nests, or...Well, I could go-on...

“I wouldn’t worry about Clinton”

By that statement, I assume you mean Bubba and not the presidential candidate Hillary.  Either way, I’m not “worried” about either of them.  Neither will be seeing the inside of the White House again unless it is a ceremonial function or as part of Hillary’s duties as senator.

That being said, when Hillary said that if she were elected, Bubba would be “Ambassador at Large”, well, then he is someone that should rightfully be scrutinized as part of deciding whether or not to vote for Hillary.  Since he will be taking an active part in the hypothetical administration, his policies, his past actions, his credibility, etc. are all fair game.  As are hers.

Is there some way to verify Slick's claim that he drove to work this morning in his own hybrid?  I know, nobody really cares about these things, and that's why he can make such utterances and be totally assured that he won't be challenged.  It's just so damn ridiculous!  Shoot, does he even know HOW to drive a car?

Definition of Drove

Rimsky – see my post below on the topic of him driving a hybrid to work today.  He doesn’t drive himself anywhere.  To answer your question however, read his quote again and remember who is saying the words – If challenged, I’m sure he would say something like “I didn’t actually mean I drove the car.  I meant I drove in the car.  You see, it all depends on your definition of drove.”

Jimbo says - "There is a fine line between freedom of speech and treason"

Clinton Truth Bending

As for Clinton riding to work in a hybrid vehicle that day, I have no doubt he did it.  I also have no doubt that he did it that day and that day only, just so he could say so in this scripted dialogue cloaked in the term interview.  I am from NY, have seen him travel, and trust me, he does not typically travel by hybrid vehicle.  This is just more Clinton truth bending based on a technically accurate statement.
