Tornado Survivors Overwhelmed by Government’s Quick Response, Media Mum

During the 2005 disaster in New Orleans caused by Hurricane Katrina, you couldn’t turn on a television set without seeing some washed-out resident complaining about the terrible job the federal government was doing with rescue, relief, and evacuation.

By contrast, in the days following the destruction of Greensburg, Kansas, by an F-5 tornado, the only one complaining is the state’s Democrat Governor Kathleen Sebelius, who, as we’ll discuss later, might have been set up to do so by DNC Chairman Howard Dean.

Yet, have you seen any interviews with Greensburg residents unhappy with the government response to the disaster?

Well, on Wednesday, the website for WCBS-TV in New York published an article suggesting that residents were overwhelmed by the immediate response, and that the governor's fuss was for her own good” (emphasis added throughout, h/t Gateway Pundit):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

While Democratic Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and the Bush administration jaw back-and-forth over the relief efforts for Greensburg, Kan., the town devastated by Friday night's F-5 tornado, town residents have chimed in and say they couldn't be any happier with the response from the government and other rescue units.

"The poor response thing is just political BS," Greensburg resident Mike Swigart, 47, who lost his house and four vehicles from the storm, told wcbstv.com in an exclusive interview. "I saw her on television and I'm disappointed in that because she doesn't know what she's talking about."

Haven’t heard about this? Haven’t seen Swigart interviewed by a teary-eyed Katie Couric or Meredith Vieira? Wonder why? Well, there’s more:

"You may have seen her on television when she said that, and she talked about Hummers, that we needed Hummers. There were Hummers sitting in front of my house every day. The National Guard was there," he said. "I saw people from all over who came right away to help and nobody sent them, they just came because they knew it was going to be big. The response was excellent, the rescue efforts were all night long, and I even made a comment to my wife later that night when we came back into our basement that I can't imagine anyone saying we had a poor response to this tragedy, that it was so quick and it was amazing."

Swigart says the general feeling around the town is that residents were overwhelmed by the immediate response, and that the governor's fuss was for her own good. White House press secretary Tony Snow responded to Sebelius by saying that there was no request by Kansas officials for extra equipment, and that if there is anyone to blame, it's her.

"I was told she wanted to run as vice president on the Democratic ticket, and honestly, I wouldn't vote for her if they paid me because of that one thing she said on television right there. It was a political slam is all it was," he said. "It was a political statement and as far as the military thing overseas, I support what they're doing over there, and the military that came here is doing a great job too."

Any questions as to why it appears that the only other media outlet that has spoken or referred to Swigart is Investor’s Business Daily in a May 9 editorial slamming Sebelius for “Katrinafying” the tornado? Think he'd be getting a lot of interviews if he agreed with the Governor's negative view of the relief?

Regardless, there may be another political reason Sebelius has fabricated this story about a poor National Guard response that the media are currently ignoring. According to Bryan at Hot Air, XM Satellite Radio’s Quinn and Rose reported Thursday that DNC Chairman Howard Dean “called Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius early Sunday morning and instructed her not to request federal assistance in recovery from the Greensburg tornado, and to lie about the federal response to date.”

An update at Hot Air stated:

I’ve placed calls to Sen. Brownback, Gov. Sebelius and the DNC. I left a message with Brownback’s office and Gov. Sebelius’ staff. The DNC spokesman denied that the phone call took place and is working on getting an official denial out to me as soon as he can.

However, Bryan included a text of an e-mail message he received from Quinn and Rose claiming that Sebelius had called Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kansas) apologizing for the statements she made concerning the federal response:

She explained that she did not believe them and that they actually had too many National Guardsmen show up.

Governor Sebelius explained “Sam, you know how political everything is right now and we’re not allowed to let an opportunity like this just pass.” She continued “I made sure not to blame you or Pat (Senator Roberts?) or anybody outside the White House. With his (Bush’s) numbers, you can’t really blame me for usin’ that.”

Once again, at this point, there has been no official statement confirming or denying this allegation. However, if the situation had been reversed, and Sebelius was a Republican who had been instructed to lie about this response by RNC Chairman Mike Duncan, would this be headline, front-page news regardless of the lack of an official statement?

If the answer is an unequivocal “Yes,” the question is “Why?”

Stay tuned.

*****Update: Hot Air reported that the DNC, Brownbeck, and Sebelius have all written formal denials that this took place.

Media mum?

Of course it's mum.. there's no Bush-bashing to be gained here by CNN, ABC, etc.

Template again!

Again, it doesn't fit the template.  Didn't they now find that DNC called Ks Gov and told her what to say?

LOL! That's hillarious! And wouldn't surprise me one bit.

I did hear a comment whining about EVERY piece of equipment "being in Iraq". I'm sure that comment was received from DNC HQ's.

Ks Guardsman

Yesterday a Kansas Guardsman called to Rush & stated that they had not even been called yet to go to the area.  He had volunteered numerous times but his unit still were waiting for orders.  The other supposedly came from another Kansas Senator checking with head of Guard and the Gov's office and was told that DNC had provided TEMPLATE to use to insert IRAQ into this disaster.

HA! What's next? Bush's 'fail

HA! What's next? Bush's 'failed' policy in Iraq causing solar flares? Or drawing a comet ever closer to earth to cause our end?

What a bunch of dirtbags!

Yep!

Thought they had already done that one!  See now BUSH caused Ind students to cheat, steal & lie on dental exams!

Rest of info added above

Glad you added to story to show about DNC, etc.

Did Brownback's office confirm that conversation with the Kansas Governor? If it is true her political career is over and it should be one more issue for the RNC in the next election.

I dunno.. after 8 years of Klinton it seems unlikely that would happen regardless of any supportive evidence.

Also, the GOP seems more likely to work on reconcilliation with the democRATS rather than use such events against them.

Msm Bias

Believer

I put a forum piece in during the night asking where was the MSM on this and voila', at least it is here!
There is possible criminal conduct if she put off calling FEMA and I have no doubts Dean asked here to sit on it for a while. These commies are absolutely ammoral and would have no compunctions about letting people suffer and wait and maybe die. After all, look at their traitorous, treasonous conduct regarding the WOT. Leaving our troops hanging out to be target practice for these murderous thugs that are roaming the world reeking havoc. I am so mad!

It is unconsciable that the MSM has been allowed to abrogate the first amendment for the pupose of political power and almost solely to continue slaughtering the unborn and advancing the cause of sexual immorality. I am rippin' mad.

If Brownback is in on this, he and the rest need to go, NOW. The GOP certainly does not want to risk having him anywhere near the WH.

On the other hand, are they just trying to bring Brownback down for more control in the Senate? Would not put it past them and they could reward Sebelius for her trouble, they would have no problem with that!

This wouldn't be the first ti

This wouldn't be the first time. When hurricane Andrew hit Florida, then governor Lawton Chiles (D) request for Federal assistance was very slow. Of course, during that period of time democRATS were bashing Bush Sr. about the Fed's response. Deja vu.

The left wing media (which is most of them) are engaging in censorship here and it is thoroughly despicable.

Need hummers?

Shocked...shocked I tell you.

"You may have seen her (Gov. Sebelius) on television when she said that, and she talked about Hummers, that we needed Hummers."

Need hummers?  Typical Clinton Democrat(ic) request.

So you Kansas Republicans going to sit on your hands again in the 08' election?

Again? Sit on our hands"?? What you talkin' 'bout?

Kansas was a Red state in 2006, 2004, 2000, 1996, 1992, 1988, 1984, 1980, 1976 and all the way back to the Erick The Viking vote of 924 I think. If you wonder how such a far-left whacko like Sebelius got elected, read my earlier posts. The Kansas voters who don't follow politics until a week before elections (the majority of voters everywhere unfortunately) probably believed she was a conservative Republican who accidentally got a (D) after her name but hadn't had time to fix it. Thanks to the NY Times of the Plains on steroids, Kansas City Star, and the TV clones of theirs. The sane part of the state (everywhere west of where I live in western Kansas City) isn't enough to overcome the stupidity of way too many voters in my area. She won by a landslide last time. I asked a few friends who voted for her "mom, apple pie, fresh cookies from the oven, etc." image the KC Star had hammered on EVERY day for months while making her opponent out to be "Jack the Ripper of Kansas" IF they truly knew ANY of her beliefs. "No". I then told them of just a few. I quoted directly from her original platform that was buried by the DNC early in her first campaign. All replied "oh my God!, I voted for her??!!" So it's our own collective fault. Don't pay attention to who the candidates really are and you deserve what you get. That's true everywhere. Even here in Kansas.

Until now, she's been the stealth governor. She has done nothing (thank Heavens!) as she long ago learned sending any of her whacky ideas to the Kansas legislature was useless. They were bounced on receipt. She soon stopped sending anything when word began to leak out that she was far left of Hillary Clinton. The current makeup of those running for president makes her a non-starter for any national office. She is hoping for some Washington job if (shudder) Hillary wins next year. This was her one chance at glory and to land that D.C. job. I'd say she blew it and I think the people of Greensburg would agree with me. I just read local interviews in our rural conservative newspapers of Greensburg citizens asking her to "please stay in Topeka so we can rebuild our town". Her nickname around Greensburg has become "Wicked Witch of the West" I read. The rural Kansas newspaper stories won't show up on AP or UPI but they speak the truth. Apologies to Dorothy and Toto however.

Good Point Wotm

Wotm - I actually read your same comments the other day about how Sebelius got the position and found it quite enlightening if not illustrative of how many Dems across the country got elected last year.  It is a sad report card on the intellect of our fellow citizens.  It's easy and to a degree truthful to blame a biased media, but shouldn't most of us, at least Republicans/conservatives, have a clue about the partisanship of our demedia by now?

Here is my method of getting around the misrepresentation - vote straight Republican.  It's not a perfect solution but it's a heck of a lot better than the alternative.

If we can get control of the Congress again and hold the Presidency then maybe we can start weeding out the RINO's and occasional scumbags that sneak into the GOP during the next primaries.  I'm not suggesting that regaining or holding control is all that easy a task considering the mamouth demedia propaganda machine relentlessly labeling far left libs as moderates and conservatives as the reincarnation of Hitler.  But recent history demonstrates it can be done if we don't become complacent.

The point to my earlier comment - It's just getting a bit tiresome listening to all the conservative whining (even here on NB) about not voting for Republicans in protest of something they feel let down about, or not voting for a Republican candidate because of religious belief,  or holding back a vote based on a single issue.  As much as the left despises some actions/inactions by their Dem Representatives, we seldom, if ever hear of Dem voters supposedly mistakenly voting for a Repub because they thought he/she was actually a lib (well, maybe in Florida).  If we are going to succeed we need to neuter straight Dem voters with our own straight Party vote.  I realize we might end up with a few Repub bad apples, but we must keep in mind they are politicians first and some of the time ALL politicians are going to do something we disagree with.  However; no matter how bad a Republican candidate is, as I said before, the alternative is worse.   At the very least and it's nothing to overlook, we have a much better chance with a GOP President and GOP controlled Congress in obtaining Supreme Court Justices that will not redefine the Constitution, nor rewrite legislation from the bench and will give States rights back to the States where voters can have the most impact.  That reason by itself is worth voting straight Republican in 08.

On a world scale - Currently, with more recent gains of conservative leaders in Canada, France, Germany, etc we have the opportunity to further drive the nail in the terrorist coffin and the spread of Socialism.  It would truly be a shame to throw a US Dem President wrench (or is that wench) in the WOT machine in '08.  I seriously can't imagine the damage that would cause not only to our country but the many developing democracies in the Middle East.  A lot is at stake in next year's national election and American conservatives would be prudent to consider the big picture before casting their vote for a she-wolf posing as a lapdog.
