The Katie Couric as “CBS Evening News” anchor experiment appears to be failing, and failing miserably.
As TV Week reported Tuesday (h/t TVNewser): “The news is not good for third-place ‘CBS Evening News With Katie Couric,’ which in the week of April 30 hit its lowest total viewership since at least 1987.”
According to TVNewser’s Brian Stelter, the “at least 1987” qualifier refers to Nielsen ratings not going back any further.
The news wasn’t any better for one of Couric’s competitors either:
[S]econd-place "NBC Nightly News With Brian Williams," which hit its lowest performance among 25- to 54-year-old viewers since at least 1987.
Why the collapse?
There was no specific cause for the ratings dips in either "Evening News" or "Nightly News," since there were no major disruptions of either newscast's distribution last week.
I’m sure conservatives across the country could give TV Week ample explanations for the ratings dips if asked.
Update (20:53 | Matthew Sheffield) Couric has really managed to go the extra mile. She even managed to outdo Dan Rather in the race to the bottom. Her ratings are below his bottom point even.

May 8, 2007 - 19:50 ET by Emma GrumpI watched the Nightly News for years, but today, it isn't news any more, it's liberal talking points. So I watch reruns of Seinfeld and Everybody loves Raymond now. They never infuriate or depress me.

May 8, 2007 - 20:15 ET by DCC1Uh ohhh, looks like Hill-Dog better look out! It appears that Americans are still sexists, I mean if we won't even watch Katie, how are we going to vote for Hill-Dog?
Oh and it looks like we must all be backwards redneck nazi's too, cause were not watching the other Liberal talking point shows, aka "Evening News"
What did they expect?? They basically call half of America all those things EVERY night, and never report anything positive....
When they finially decide to stop broadcasting the "Evening Editorial", and start broadcasting the "Evening News" they will get some viewers back.

Answer is easy, easy, easy
May 8, 2007 - 20:34 ET by w0tmWould you spend a dollar to buy a newspaper that switched to running their op-ed page on page one then ads for the rest of the paper? Of course not. When the three network's Nightly News became more and more op-ed and less and less news coverage, their viewership dropped at the same rate. They now
just "preach to the choir" and to each other. And act as if they still matter. They could all show a test pattern during their time slots and only MoveOn.org and DailyKOS would notice.

What do they expect? Couric
May 8, 2007 - 20:57 ET by mostlymoderateWhat do they expect? Couric should be on a cooking show, a home & garden show, maybe even a sports show. However, the EVENING NEWS??? Geez, you just don't think of "The News" when you look at Couric. Whether liberals or not, when you think of "news" you think of Jennings, Brokaw, Cronkite, etc. Couric is nothing more than a "white" version of Oprah with less money. They had no business giving her that position. She sucks and they know it! But they wanted to play the "politally correct" role of giving the position to a woman. The problem is that they COULD have found a better woman instead of this bubble-gum chewing nightmare named Couric. Even her name sucks. "Katie"???? Sounds like some bimbo you meet on the tennis court in college.
One more thing...
May 8, 2007 - 21:07 ET by goldenthroatMostlymoderate, the Clinton Broadcasting System not only knows Katie sucks but KNEW it when she was hired! Now they have firmly entrenched themselves in the bargin basement of evening news.
If she was so stinkin' good at what she does, then why was she passed over for Brian Williams when she was at the Nobody But Clinton network?
I love it when these left-coast, bleeding-heart, 'do-as-we-say-not-as-we-do' liberal networks get a taste of their own medicine. Couric was and is a disaster and her days on evening news are numbered.
And the world will be a better place as a result!

May 8, 2007 - 23:01 ET by GalvanicCBS apparently thought that hiring perky Katie would draw back the audience that Dan Rather had so recklessly driven off over his tenture, but never looked at their news coverage itself. Arrogance? Yeah, probably.
In any event, CBS is now stuck with the very expensive albatross. It couldn't 've happened to a better bunch of folks. :-)
Couric
May 8, 2007 - 23:38 ET by pocomocoCouric’s primary problem is that she is unable to strike a GQ pose as her male counterparts do when delivering the news. Apparently, showing the anchor in ¾ profile is supposed to make them more credible. Lou Dobbs does it best as he fills ¾ of the TV screen with his face.
Joking aside, network news has suffered to the point of being irrelevant as the suits make vane attempts the rearrange the deck chairs on their sinking networks, and refuse to understand the writing on the wall.

May 9, 2007 - 03:42 ET by zfThe media can't seem to realise that the reason their ratings drop is because people don't like them. It's funny because their answer to this will probably be to amp up the parts of their product people dislike most.
In my opinion
May 9, 2007 - 04:31 ET by Mr. TerryAmong the many other reasons for the ratings dip in evening news is that the evening news is not news at all. It has become entertainment, albeit out of touch with middle Ameica.
The reason the Couric isn't succeeding in the first chair is that the network tried to put a pretty face there because they are after ratings and think sex appeal is how to get it.
They don't get it. We want news.
Katie, hot? Not
May 9, 2007 - 05:19 ET by UnsaneSex appeal? If that was all they were after, why did they bother with a 50 year old Katie and not go after, say, Kiran Chetry? Or another genuine hottie?

My family hasn't watched anything on the networks other than golf for more than a decade and the more I read about it's trying to race each other in raunchiness, the gladder I am that I'm missing it. Either we read classic fiction, or surf the Web. Or we've been very entertained by old dramas e.g. A TOUCH OF FROST; and FOLEY'S WAR sourced on British TV and rented from Netflix.

May 9, 2007 - 07:03 ET by NortonPeteWow ratings less than 1987. So how did they know such an exact number?
1987 people were watching, wait, less than 1987 people were watching, oh, I know they figured someone must have gotten up to run to the bathroom. But still if only 1987 people were watching why not invite them all to the studio for milk and cookies and save the the cost of transmitting over the air?
It's not Katie's fault
May 9, 2007 - 07:32 ET by c5thenIMO CBS started to lose it's audience when it became clear that Dan Rather and Co. used an obvious forgery in order to try an affect the election outcome. What really started to turn people off, was their justification of the story, even after it was acknowledged that the initial document was a forgery. In effect they were saying that we know the story is bogus, but we agree with the premis and want it to be true.
People started leaving then. They had the opportunity to show that they were changing course and attempting to gain back the viewers trust with the anchor that they chose. Instead, they went with Katie which basically showed SOP and more of the same.
There is little that CBS can do except radically overhaul their "news" division or wait out the American short attention span and hope that the viewers return eventually.
