Ideas to make this a better site

I nice feature would be that when I click on a recent comment it would go there no matter how many pages are on the thread. Also a next button. When I see 3 new comments in a thread, it would be nice after it takes me to the first one, I could click something and it would take me to the next new comment.

I'm with you on this one.

I'm with you on this one. Although, recently I realized that you could sort the posts according to date. Just below the original post in a thread, there are 4 or 5 boxes. If, in the first 2 boxes, you select "Flat-expanded" and "Newest first" then click "save settings" it should help. But it can be difficult to determine what the person is replying to exactly, so if you have more than a few new replies you may want to check it out in the threaded view first.

Hope I made sense and was able to help.

Thanks for posting this CV

Thanks for posting this CV and thanks to the staff at NewsBusters.

I have a few ideas to throw out. I also recognize that my suggestions will only reflect my predilections and personal taste. For purposes of brevity, the following is an only a sketch for creating an even better NewBusters.

I have a great respect for the high level of discourse sometimes provided by my favorite posters and the contributions made by the staff of NewsBusters. The great thing about NewsBusters is how accessible and responsive those who create the content are in elucidating their ideas, they present ideas concisely and clearly and take care monitoring these posts.

I’m sure like many in the NewsBusters tribe; who like myself are limited by discretionary time, may find NewsBusters an invaluable resource and educational tool. The research involved let alone the analysis needed to slog through the day-to-day propaganda of liberal distortion by the so called “main stream news” is endless.

Caveat Lector:
Conceded: I don’t know Jack about a lot of things; e.g. Latin, I just like using choice phrases because it sort of dresses up the text and I can fancy myself the intellectual, of course thankfully there are research tools like Babylon and Answers.com, etc. available to Truck-driver/artists, err, autodidactic hacks like myself.
See point explained below.

My Critique: There are some posters like myself who routinely post off topic, and also like myself they may rely on a shtick or post a comments using sarcasm or irony, this is done with various degrees of comedic success. LOL. Am I being sarcastic or is it simply the mind of a solipsistic narcissist? Well, there lies the rub. Humor is difficult to pull off sometimes. And rules of engagement should be enacted to reduce the possibility of misunderstanding. I recommend that someone expert in such matters submit a Glossary of terms. (If I get some time I’ll do it myself).

VERITAS ODIT MORAS…Truth hates delay. (Seneca) translated by Babylon. Very cool program indeed.

However there is a core group of posters whose accomplished knowledge and articulation (IMO), impart the significant ingredient for a true dialog (facts). I have enjoyed a few of these dialogs from time to time for at least a year.

I will just name a few posters who are frequent or occasional contributors each offering insight that I would actually pay for; Including the staff members: Matthew Sheffield, Noel Sheppard, Mark Finkelstein, Brent Baker, Tim Graham, respectfully, among others appreciated but not named.

Also; the posters; K.C. Mudville, Jack Bauer, Gary Hall, SportPolitic, Blonde, Bigtimer, Dave R, MisterBill, BD, respectfully, even including Sarcasmo, and just maybe Rainlillie. This just mentions only a few of my favorites here at NewBusters. We all have our favorites and our detractors. All in all, NewsBusters is well designed, well conceived and well executed.

With those accolades out of the way, here is my wish list:

· Graphic Icons representing individual posters. Here again I am thinking of a graphic device chosen by the poster using variables such as the Computerized Police Sketch Artist. It would generate a mask also users might select a generic mask.

· A graphic meter, which would show the approximate number of those viewing a particular post. E.g. thresholds of: [1-10--10-20--20-30,] etc. This would help me monitor the hot topics being discussed.

· A timer showing if one or more posters are in the process of posting a reply, this does not need to be linked to the comment box, it could simply be something the poster clicks on while they are composing an answer of reply. I think it would be a useful indicator.

· Pop-up boxes like they have at Answers.com for posters, like myself, who may only want to add a thumbs up or a shut-up to the debate. Without having to disrupt the flow of a great knock down drag out fight. Something short and sweet. Also for consideration the addition of colored backgrounds could even be designated with emotional significance. Some people and I will not mention whom, are a tad over the top. (ME) for example. An anger meter could be illuminating. Noel Sheppard once commented on a similar suggestion and indicated that this could be a bad idea, but he doesn’t know where I live so I’m not afraid of being slapped upside the head. (Kidding) but see what I mean?

Maybe it could be tried as an experiment and put on probation.

· A spell checker would be nice on the comment box. Did I mention I‘m an idiot?

· Invited guests, Authors etc. like John Stossel. Something like on the old What’s My Line Show. Maybe not, well anyway I’m on a creative roll; I guess it sounds too much like The Huffington Post.

· A Segment on a news show like Fox or? I feel privileged to have found this site. And there is nothing more obnoxious than an evangelist.

I really have no idea if any of these ideas are practical, but maybe they will generate better ideas.

Great ideas, especially the spell check, and the thumbs up or down...so many times I want to write ya, I agree, but don't because it just adds clutter.

Addendum;
I should have made it clear that some my previous ideas are not original, and on second thought the idea of an Icon representing each poster maybe too much. It might create Icon envy.

The current layout is very clean and well thought out. Sometimes less is more. I am a visual person by nature and write poorly (self-critique). I probably represent a small minority who visit this site.

Also I was late to class, so to speak, regarding my conversion to the conservative philosophy and I am still catching up. It would be great if there was an educational resource page, something like the forum page, where a list of books or podcast or maybe something like a mini-syntopicon on conservative thought like the cross reference provided by the The Great books collection edited by Mortimer Adler. This could relate topics and historical contexts along with the key thinkers of conservative thought.

I subscribe to the New Criterion and they feature reviews of conservative related books, some of which I purchase on Amazon.com It would be terrific if maybe the NewsBusters staff created some sort of syllabus for people like myself with holes in their heads, err I mean holes in their knowledge.

I do not know how to create links in red but if you visit Front Page.com by David Horowitz, you will find a reference called Discoverhtenetworks.org. Maybe NewsBusters’ could create a network of conservative thinkers as a counterpoint for research and reference?

"That's all I have to say about that." Keep up the great work.

Or maybe sticky posts for arguments that keep cropping up, we can just refer trolls to, such as global warming, bush conspiracies, the iraq war is just for oil etc.

Concur, good idea, my guess is that on any discussion board like this there is bound to be repetition and patterns which emerge, that would be an interesting tool.

Preciate the plug, RDW. Now I need a cure for swelled head

RDW,

I blew through your excellent suggestions about a week ago, but I guess in my haste I didn't read it carefully enough. I must say I am honored to be listed among your favorite posters here, as my comments tend to come out somewhat disjointed at times (need to seriously work on my stealth posting skills) and when my name does pop up, it's usually Debra telling me where I'm headed in the afterlife (Hell) or Tumbleweed flinging rotten burritos at me from afar (perhaps from his government office down in Mexico City?).

To be mentioned in the same lofty group as K.C. Mudville, Jack Bauer, Gary Hall, SportPolitic, Blonde, Bigtimer, MisterBill, BD, Sarcasmo-my favorite members here as well as in conjunction with Matthew, Noel, Mark, Brent Baker, Tim- my favorite contributers here at NB, well, the crackling sound you hear is my skull straining under the increasing pressure as my head is beginning to swell.

BTW-The check's in the mail. :-)

CV,

Nice forum topic....and I'm sure this is exactly what Matthew had in mind.

A very long time ago a poster named NoFate posted a method of following a comment to a two or three page thread.  It seemed rather cumbersome to me, so I never tried it.  I'm sure it's in the archives somewhere.

For Matt...I really like the layout of the threaded comments here.  Many other blogs I read are in a flat format, which makes the discussion hard to follow.

My suggestion, though, is to eliminate the long stringy comments when the thread goes on for too long.  Perhaps put some kind of a "return indicator" after a post with three/four words per line, and move the thread back to the left side of the page immediately under the last one.  When I get to the point of having to read one word per line all the way on the right hand side of the page, I generally bag it and move on.  And have probably missed some interesting comments because I'm just too impatient.

That is a great idea, as the

That is a great idea, as the one word per line does become hard to read...sometimes I hit reply just so I can read it normally, and then cancel the reply.

I will sometimes read the thread using flat list, viewing the newest first to see the most recent posts, but then as you say it is hard to place the comments in context.

One word Blonde. "WIDE

One word Blonde. "WIDESCREEN!"

I have a widescreen monitor on both my laptop and my desktop. I'd say that 95% of the "deep" discussions stay readable on the widescreen monitors. Dell has a nice 24 incher for less than $600.00 (on sale).

I'll never go back to a 4:3 screen.

Another feature that could help is a "easier reading" button (like a "print version" button) that brings it up in another window.

Mean Gene,

I have a 24" Dell monitor at work, agreed, it is fab.

Doesn't do anything for me at home, or on the laptop when I'm elsewhere.

In truth....

The one feature I would like to see, and I do know it is possible, is a subscription feature. Way too often do many of us, reply to a given thread, and not remember which thread it was on. If it's a reply in passing, it's no problem at all, but if it is something that we really want to carry a conversation on, it'd be nice to have a subscription option, to allow us to mark given threat topics, for review. This would also help on the endless pages of topics to sort through, after about 2 days (you know, make a comment today, and in 2 days, the topic is on page 4).

My guess is that the buddy list represents those posters who are philosophically similar, I guess? Although that might include about 80% of the posters at NB.

On the other hand there are posters who I disagree with on some points but enjoy reading their post.

Spell-checking your NB comments

Spell-checking your NB comments is easy with Mozilla Firefox. Download it from www.mozilla.com. It has a bug with our current editor that makes you have to click the <> toolbar button twice in order to type into the comment box but otherwise works well. It's the preferred browser of most NB staffers.

Oh, and no, I was not paid to say that ;-) Mozilla is a non-commercial project.

I would like to see the existing forums moved since the re-naming.  Perhaps an 'OLD TOPICS' can be created into which all Forums which have no posts in 3 months will be sent (maybe call it the corn field)

I think we should have a Forum Category called "The Woodshed".

Then when we get in heated arguments we can say, "Hey buddy, let's take this to the Woodshed!"

What I'd like to see is not

What I'd like to see is notification of any and all responses to my messages -- I suspect many of us would not mind an email for each one, or an email a day with all the URLs of all of them. The current situation tends to perpetuate conversations which shouldn't last (rapid-response flamewars from those a bit more adept at typing than thinking, IMO) at the expense of those which should.

We need a 'Ignore All Comment

We need a 'Ignore All Comments' button for specific usernames so when we are logged in we won't be bothered by comments from people we individually decide are offensive or abusive.

I'm not sure if this is mentioned elsewhere and I haven't stumbled across it yet (I did, in fact search), but a list of commonly used abbreviations/acronyms would be a great help to the new user.

When I read comments and stories, I usually find myself with a search page open just to find definitions for the many acronyms you guys use.  Maybe this could be a little stickied forum thread or something.  Thanks =)

It would be nice if the time

It would be nice if the time that is used to kick off people who are idle would take into account when the person is typing a post. Too many times I have typed a well thought out response, only to lose it to the infamous "Access Denied" screen. At the very lease allow me to log back in without losing my post.

Writing while in the middle

Writing while in the middle of other things, I often cut and paste to other software to be safe. After experiencing the 'Denied' while focusing only on a post, I started doing the same every time. That or more 'previews'.

Another problem is the ability to access the following page(s) without scrolling. The opportunity to link from page 1... top right would save needless scrolling efforts.

I use a T2 on the home network yet the download here is painfully slow at times.

I see some of the dems around here and simply choose not to respond to them. Somewhere above I read about the idea of personal enemies and deletion of specific names.
