Snow Thumps Mitchell Claim U.S. to Blame for Cuba's Woes: 'Socialism 0-for-History'

With baseball season underway, Tony Snow today used a metaphor from America's pastime to knock out of the park NBC correspondent Andrea Mitchell's allegation that the U.S. is to blame for Cuba's economic woes.

As I noted here earlier today, Mitchell reported on MSNBC from Havana on the occasion of Cuba's May Day celebrations. Describing conditions in Cuba, as the country transitions from Fidel Castro to brother Raul, Mitchell claimed:

There have been no major problems, other than the continuing economic difficulties that of course this country faces because of the U.S. embargo, the economic embargo.

This NewsBuster participated in a conference call today with White House Press Secretary Tony Snow. Asked by me to comment on the Mitchell claim, Snow, flashing midseason form, observed:

As for the economic straits of the people in Cuba, there's an unbroken record of eocnomic failure in socialist states. Certainly the economic approach of the United States has not helped the economy of the Cubans, but on the other hand, this has been an economy that now for 47, 48 years has in fact been a basket case.

It's a direct result of policies that suppress people's natural freedoms, and their abilities to generate wealth and also to enjoy the incentives to build fresh wealth and opportunity on their own. So, again, look around the world, and socialism is 0-for-history when it comes to producing widespread, profound prosperity.

Back, back, back, back . . . gone!

Good to see Tony back; I've met him in person and he's a great guy and a true gentleman.

And it's wonderful to have his wit and wisdom back on the ice, shooting and scoring against the idiotic musings of Beltway gnomes like Andrea Mitchell.

How wonderful that you are able to ask Tony Snow questions.  I'm glad that you asked him about this.  It even hits it home more how absurd it was for Mitchell to say what she did.  She couldn’t even bother to qualify the statement.  She could have said,  "According to the Cuban government their economic problems are due to ..... followed with “ But the U.S. government says... “

The liberal press doesn’t even bother to do that anymore. So thank you for doing her job and getting our Governments position.

So nice to see Tony back, he is such a class act!  Dana was pretty good, I have to say, but Tony is the real deal.  Good to see he is back in form, and I will continue to hope the best for him.

Cuba shutout

Economic difficulties in Cuba Andrea?

So I guess Castro partnering up with the Soviet Union didn't work out too well for Cuba.  Damn that Reagan winning the cold war.....

Still praying for ya Tony.

Too bad he didn't mention how

Too bad he didn't mention how Castro eliminated the AIDS problem in Cuba by requiring mandatory testing, and locking up everyone who tested positive in "resorts", that are actually high-security hospitals, for the rest of their lives.  We wouldn't have an AIDS problem either if we did that, but I wonder how many Liberals would be willing to sign onto that progressive way of thinking?

They also do that in North Ko

They also do that in North Korea, where they put them in "Workers Camp" or the Stalinist's Gulags until they wither and die...

May God bless Tony Snow.

I don't know what Alan Greenspan sees in Andrea Mitchell. But whatever it is, it cannot be between her ears.

Cuba - a tortured interview with Pres. Clinton

Great home run, Mark.  There are policy differences of course, but by and large the embargo against Cuba has been rather well supported by many an administration - D or R.  Bill Clinton waffled a bit on his views depending on who was asking and Hillary remained stauncly supportive of maintaining the embargo as she ran for her Senate seat (winds are a changing), but the media and the leftists groups - well we know where they wish to pull the Democrat party.

For a bit of tortured fun, I ran across this interview of President Clinton, by Amy Goodman back in Nov. 2000. No balls, no strikes, no hits - just bs.

Castro and the Embargo

First of all, let me say I've been against the embargo for a long time.  Had it not been for the embargo, Castro would have been gone a long time ago.  He's been able to point to the embargo as the main reason Cuba doesn't have a great economy. Andrea is just attempting to perpetuate the myth.

Limbaugh had the better comment today.  He talked about Mitchell's comment and said how improbable it was that Cuba could trade with Canada, the EU, China, most of the Caribbean nations plus South America, Central America, and Mexico, just not the U.S., and their economy is in a shambles?  What could possibly change by their trading with us?

Never argue with an idiot.  They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

The idea that without the emb

The idea that without the embargo fidel would be gone is as well traveled a myth as the one about the embargo being the reason for Cuba's economic trouble.

Let me explain what happens when you lift the embargo without gaining a single concession.

First American businesses will flock there and sink hundreds of millions of dollars into joint partnerships with the regime. That's because only the regime has authority to conduct business. Not only that those firms will be minority partners because majority ownership by foreigners is forbidden. The the firms will have to accept the terms of Cuban trade which include such things as giving up the right to hire workers, they are provided by the Cuban state which also collects their pay in dollars and distributes 5% of it the workers in Cuban pesos.

After a couple of years of business the government will begin defaulting on its financial obligations like it has every time its gone down this route with other countries. Minority partners will be expelled for complaining too loudly about the situation.

And it goes on and on. The US should not lower the embargo until Cuba makes basic reforms to its economy like allowing private property ownership, allowing independent trade unions and collective bargaining, like legalizing the US dollar, like allowing for the free contracting of employment. In short, when they get rid of the communist system they have. Otherwise we'd just be pumping dollars into a decripit system without deriving any of the democratizing benefits of doing business.

HG, You covered that all so

HG,

Thank you.

Move over Eleanor

So Andrea is giving Eleanor Clift a run for the money for the stupidest woman pundit title.

In my opinion, Mithell's not even close.

Clift is one of those people who seems to have worked out how every little thing that has ever happened on this universe is directly related to GWB and his "failures". She simply amazes me sometimes -its not 7 degrees of separation between some GWB failure and any point in the universe, its a direct link in (through?) her mind. Simply fascinating!

(paraphrasing) "Doesn't it make you want to lock her up and do experiments.... or is that just me?"
