CNN Regular Wants Premium on Gas: Another Tax

"Put in a tax to make it $4 a gallon right now," urged CNN contributor Allen Wastler on the April 28 "In the Money."

Wastler's motivation for higher taxes was to encourage alternatives to gasoline.

"Because when you saw us flirting with $3, all the sudden we got a burst in hybrid production, we got a burst in ethanol production," Wastler explained to the "In the Money" crowd.

But the CNNMoney managing editor did not explain the burst in government mandates and regulations that helped fuel those alternatives.

The "In the Money" team including Ali Velshi and Christine Romans not only urged higher gas prices (with taxation), but hyped the threat of $4-a-gallon gasoline, though the national average is still below $3-a-gallon.

"There are forces that could make $3 gas something that we're not worrying about becaue we're worrying about $4 gas. Three-dollar gas could end up looking like a bargain for you," said Velshi.

Wastler did slightly undermine Velshi's prediction by indicating "some experts -- some, not all -- saying you'll see $4 a gallon gas this summer. Particularly if you live on the West Coast, California, Washington, Oregon, Nevada."

Imposing taxes to change beha

Imposing taxes to change behavior only works when there are alternatives already available. But when there's only one path, and no alternatives, taxes make zero sense. It only makes the taxers richer. It doesn't solve any problems. It winds up being extortion, because consumers have no other choice but to pay more for the only option available. What makes more sense is to offer a tax break to anyone (including existing energy producers) who can create alternatives. Once you have realistic alternatives in place, that's when a tax to penalize inefficient choices makes sense.

Would not a higher gas tax eq

Would not a higher gas tax equate to discrimination towards the poor and down trodden? And seeing as how it is the minority races that are the overwelming recipents of federal and state aid, would that not equate to racism? So seems to me that the powerful white race is advocating keeping the minority races down. So this makes CNN racist!!

bass...I thought of the exact

bass...

I thought of the exact same thing while reading this article. Prior to my wife getting a Kidney transplant we were constantly going to her Kidney doctor which also happens to be the one and only Kidney Dialysis center in our area. We had numerous conversations with patients in the waiting area and learned a great deal about the differences in care if you had money as opposed to not having money. The tragic theme that came up the most was transportation. Many of the patients had to take dialysis 3, sometimes 4 times week. Most of the people were in such bad shape they could not drive themselves so they had to depend on family, friends, or some sort of government transportation program. The most popular was taking vans supplied by a number of orgs. These vans would show up every day like a convoy bringing the sick to their dialysis treatments. Some of the orgs had some very beat up pieces of equipment because funding was extremely tight. We live in a Mountainous rural area and some of these vans had to start out before daylight just to get their patients to dialysis by 10 or 11 am. Well you get the idea. So why don't we have these idiots that want to raise the tax on gas drive these vans for a week, then they would see for themselves that making things harder on people IS NOT the answer.

As an aside... we once met a sick woman that got her ride from her nephew. She was on a fixed income yet had to pay her nephew $20 per ride, and she had dialysis 3 times a week (she passed away in December). To make a long story short, my wife now drives 4 people 3 times a week to our Kidney center. We use our vehicle and pay for all gas and repairs ourselves, and would never take a penney from any of these people. We can take the hit if gas prices continue to climb, but from experience we know that there are thousands that cannot.

Seems like the idiots in the article need some life lessons.

The liberal MSM has become an enemy of the USA.

I guess a short sighted indiv

I guess a short sighted individual would think this was a good idea but adding essentially a dollar tax to every gallon would destroy this countries economy and probably force a large portion of the population into unemployment and quite possibly starve thousands and quite possibly millions of people to death and have people freezing in their homes over the winter.

If they would look at it closely they would realize that gas is the fuel that keeps this countries economy going it is used in agriculture, shipping, transportation and energy production the purposed increase would probably cause:

1)  Many farmers would go bankrupt before the end of the first growing season leaving much of our countries crops to go unharvested (so much for ethanol) and those farmers that did make it through harvest would pass along the increased cost to the buyer and due to the shortage of food they will pay whatever it takes to buy the food and pass their costs on.

2)  Shipping companies will do the same but will be also be affected by the slowing economy because as this artificial inflation drags on most small stores and many large stores will close because they either cant afford to purchase goods or if they can get them they cant sale them because nobody can afford them and as the market base shrinks so will the requirements for shipping smaller companies will go under and the larger companies will lay off drivers.

3)  Because everyone in this country will have their purchase power significantly impacted on all fronts there will be people who will not be able to afford to get to work, doctor, or the store (some people will suggest that they walk or ride a bike to any one of these places but say that to someone who lives out of town or who has a disability and what would they do in the winter or severe weather) many people would loose their job simply because they didn’t show up.  School district could no longer afford to transport children to school leaving many children at home or relying on their parents to transport them to school (many children would probably end up simply staying at home).  Emergency transportation would be severally impacted as well as most counties and hospitals could no longer afford to simply finance these services (imagine calling 9/11 to report a fire or accident and being asked for a credit card before they send services).

 4)  Because much of the country is heated in the winter with gas and oil many people will be unable to afford to heat their homes causing many people to freeze to death in their own homes or dieing of carbon monoxide poisoning while trying to heat their home with some other heating source.  People who use electricity to heat their homes wont be in much better shape as electrical costs will skyrocket as all power production in this country other then Hydroelectric and Nuclear power rely on gas powered vehicles to deliver their fuel and even those people that currently receive their power from Hydroelectric and Nuclear power will see steep increases in power costs as the power is distributed over the grid to areas with no active power production. Rolling blackouts and brownouts would be commonplace.

5)  Military law will have to be ordered and the military would be deployed throughout our own country to break up the food and fuel riots that would surly occur.

6)  Government income would drop significantly (even with the added Gas tax) destroying the budget as we know it with many of the vital programs having to be shutdown as the government could no longer afford them.

7)  Unemployment and joblessness would be at levels the likes of which we haven’t seen since the great depression but even that will pale in comparison.

Our Government saw all these as a possibility of the 9/11 attacks which is why we are where we are not to steal the oil as so many would want you to believe but to secure the oil. But he doesn’t care he wants to raise taxes on gas to spur development of alternative fuels. That will work if he’s thinking about burning all the dead bodies to keep warm in the winter!

Sorry this is so long winded.

So, what's the downside?

So, what's the downside?

Tax on gas.  No new rifineri

Tax on gas.  No new rifineries in 25+ years.  No expansion of domestic exploration and extraction.  Increased regulations on formulae.  Yet, high gas prices are somehow evidence of collusion between Bush and his rich oil buddies?

We hear libs complaining of "record profits" for oil companies, yet they never seem to point out that the government gets more money on every gallon sold than the oil companies who invested the capital and took all the risk!

Why $4 per gallon?  Why not

Why $4 per gallon?  Why not $20 per gallon? Or $50?  Won't that stimulate even more rapid R&D into alternative fuels?

As for ethanol production, its greatest stimulator isn't demand, but legislated mandate.   Powerful Senators and Representatives from the Corn Belt States set requirements.

It's all a scam

so far none of these alternative fuels are viable. It takes more energy to produce a gallon of them than you get out of them. That makes it a net loss equation which is not sustainable. Without Government mandates and subsidies, they would not have any companies involved in them.

And corn derived ethanol is driving the cost of food higher and higher because the corn farmers get a higher price for their corn from the ethenol makers (thans to the government subsidies) then they get from the feed producers.

Alan Wastler is a CNN regular. Well then, he must be right. Raise the white flag in Iraq and raise the taxes. A formula for success if I ever heard one.  Too bad one of the Fox regulars didn't think of it? That CNN, can't beat 'em.  Wow! Oh boy, Oh boy!

NEVER, NEVER trust

CNN's on to something here

Maybe CNN's on to something here Julia. After all, the best way to tackle this "threat" of $4/ gal gasoline would be to tax it so that it is $4 today. See, then the threat and the fear factor are removed from our lives. (;~> gh

I dare the Dems in Congress t

I dare the Dems in Congress to do this. I triple-dog dare them! See how long they'd keep the majority in Congress then!

Even liberal-leaning voters who have drunk the Global Warming kool-aid and want to "do their part" to help the environment would balk big-time at the government deliberately adding exorbitant taxes to drive the price of gas up when there's no viable alternative available. Gas prices don't just hit us when we fill up our personal vehicles--they drive up the price of everything. Groceries are delivered to our neighborhood stores in ginormous trucks that use tons of gasoline. When you add thousands of dollars to the cost of delivering goods, sellers will raise the prices of those goods to cover the higher cost of gasoline. Duh. Cause-and-effect, Dems! As someone already pointed out, this kind of tax would hit the poor the hardest. Very un-liberal of them to even consider this!

This jackass clearly doesn't

This jackass clearly doesn't have a family of four, a $7/hr. job, and a $40/wk. gas bill.

Leave it to a Democrat to tax the last penny out of a poor man's pocket.

Channeling

That’s true, but he is capable of channeling the poor folks in this country, so all is well.

Jimbo says - "There is a fine line between freedom of speech and treason"

Yes, let's raise the gas tax.

Yes, let's raise the gas tax...on private jets.  Tax the H%#^%LL out of fuel for private jets (non commercial flights, excluding propeller driven aircraft). For every multiple of 100 gallons, one dollar Federal gas tax should be cummulatively levied, so by the time they get to a 1000 gallons they would be paying $9/gallon.  Won't "Dr. Al Gore and the Dems" be crying the blues then...look at that, a new music group.
