TV In The Toilet -- Literally

Photo of Tim Graham.

The Federal Communications Commission defined broadcast indecency in 1987 as "language or material that, in context, depicts or describes, in terms patently offensive as measured by contemporary community standards for the broadcast medium, sexual or excretory organs or activities."

Brent Bozell’s culture column this week reports that ABC’s "According to Jim" had an entire plot revolve around the gag (and "gag" is probably the right word) that the Jim Belushi character ate his wedding ring and his wife waited to catch him in the act of pooping it out. It apparently lands with a "clank." His wife and her siblings then pop out of the shower with an a-ha. Brent writes: "This is certainly a plot based on (implied) excretory activities, but it’s certainly not what the regulators had in mind. I suspect that when these rules were written there wasn’t a soul at the FCC who believed ‘humor’ would ever come to this."

what's the big deal.

this isn't exactly the most groundbreaking show in the world anyway. but why is this liberal bias? i think this is one of those occasional posts by newsbusters that is just not up to snuff. besides, who does/enjoys conservative humor? someone inform me of those comedians engaging in such rare form.

you are correct the ground wa

you are correct the ground was broken with Archie flushing on All in the Family

besides, who does/enjoys conservative humor?

well, uh pretty much all of us here, the satire of presenting the actual statements of some of those on the liberal side often leaves us ROFLMAO.

Brent Bozell

why is this liberal bias

It is not liberal bias. It is about  Brentt Bozell having issues about us having more choice on tv. His idea of wanting to protect kids from learning bad things is admirable, but the way to do this is not censoring everything. Ever heard of a v chip?

What shows did Bozell censor

What shows did Bozell censor?

Newsbusterbrown

This website is for fighting the media bias and that is one of the main things Brent is dedicated to. The other thing Brent is dedicated too is trying to limit our choices on tv. He does not actually have the power to censor shows himself but he trys to bully tv stations by calling advertisers of certain shows to pull their support of shows deemed "indecent or vulgar"

Here is some of of Brents other sites

http://www.parentstv...

http://www.parentstv...

A few years ago was on a lone crusade to take down the WWE, then the WWF and falsey accusing them of being responsible for Lionel Tate. Remember the boy that killed the little girl using wrestling moves. Well it turns out that the info he gave was false and he had to apologize to Vince Macmahan and pay a hefty fine.

What Brett is trying to do is Noble on paper, but can you imagine 24 without the violence or Gray's Anatomy without the double entendres? We as parents should be responsible for what out kids watch. We should be able to make that decision to turn the channel or not

Would you shut them up, shawn?

For years, numerous liberal groups have been doing what Brent is doing....and a few conservative groups, too.  It's free speech.  Would you shut them up?

Free speech

Free speech is Free speech. The liberals demonstrated they do not reap what they sow after the whole Imus fiasco. I just don't agree that anybody has the right to tell me what I can and cannot watch on the tube.

You might not "agree" with it, but

You might not "agree" with it, but what would you do, make a law?

Not to interrupt you two, but

Not to interrupt you two, but since I saw Imus' name brought up I thought I would put this link in for those who may not of caught this on H&C the other night, Bernard Mcguirk speaking his mind on the hypocrisy of Sharpton and such, but the line that got me the most was something to the affect of....'maybe Barak Obama was getting too much press'....says a lot to me right there, I have disagreed with him for years about this war, but he is no dummy, and he meant that right at the Clinton machine and her buddies IMHO.

http://www.foxnews.com/hannityandcolmes/index.html

The statement went right past the two hosts...for me...that was unfortunate..

RJ

I would not make it law, but I would like to make it harder for people like Bozell to make it law. ie, Congress has decided to make it their business to regulate what we watch on tv. I believe it was last year that they raised the fine from 30000 per violation to 300000. This was all because of the Janet Jackson "wardrobe misfunction" Now the FCC wants to regulate violence on tv as well. I feel it is our right as Americans to watch watch what we want to watch and leave it up to parents to deem what is appropriate for their children.

Bozell is a member of the FCC?

Bozell is a member of the FCC?  Who knew?

I just don't agree that any

I just don't agree that anybody has the right to tell me what I can and cannot watch on the tube.

But you have the right to ignore Bozell, so I don't see what's the problem here.

BTW, I don't always agree with his condemnations.

Bozell

If he did not effect me, I would just ignore him. He has the power to influence"bully" major advertisers to pull their support for many of the shows I enjoy. Just like many people on this site dislike Hilary. Does not seem like many of her detracters ignore her right?

You're still being selective in your complaint, shawn

You're still being selective in your complaint.  For years and years, numerous liberal groups have been practicing what Bozell is doing (contacting advertisers).   Now that it pinches your own toes you whine.

RJ

I am not being selective RJ, liberals are hyprocites because they are very selective about free speech. They are all about free speech unless someones feelings are hurt which I already stated. To answer your post above, I never said Brent is part of the FCC, I'm saying he has the power to bully advertisers from pulling from shows.

The FCC turned a blind eye for years until the whole Janet Jackson thing.

shawn i've seen where you wil

shawn i've seen where you will 'call-out' a dem when they are wrong.  (noted Jefferson) this would be my concern; if you are trying to protect free-speech then doesn't Brent also have free-speech?

Touche, Botg. Yes Brent

Touche, Botg. Yes Brent has the right to free speech, and it is an Oxymoron, but his free speech is trying to deny me my free speech if that makes any sense.

I have been bitter for a year now. Howard Stern was the best part of  my drive to work. Now I have to pay to listen to him because of a few nitpickers.

so then you also have the lib

so then you also have the liberty to oppose him?  (and to exclude his shows with your V-chip?)

Huh? Touche? Shawn, when I

Huh?  Touche?  Shawn, when I laid out the "free speech" question way up the thread, you came back with "yes, but" garbage.   Just throwing out whatever pops into your head at the moment, bucko?

RJ

Sorry I did not respond sooner RJ, but the better half insisted on going roller blading. Bucko? I have not heard that word since Happy Days was cancelled. lol. This is is going nowhere RJ. I have repeated myself about 3 times. I think Bozell is a threat to free speech on tv because of his .....do I have to mention the advertisers again. You can be fun to debate with RJ, but when you say the same thing over and over again it can get pretty boring. I said touche to Botg instead of you RJ. Awww I apologize it did not mean to hurt your feelings. Did you ever watch that episode of Seinfeld when George wanted to take credit for Buying Elaine "The big salad?"

Anyways, about me saying whatever pops into my head. Since you like Happy Days so much. You are correctabmundo, so go sit on in Potsie. ;)

See that, shawn? Try to treat you like a grownup and

My point was clear, shawn: I was addressing your inconsistency, not any perceived "hurt feelings."  Typically, you missed it.

But, there you go again:  I try to treat you like a grownup and you revert to your default position of Childish Troll.  I suppose my recognition of your juvenile behavior (and that I pin you down when you make one of your frequently foolish statements) is why you whine that I have "issues" with you.

I keep repeating the same thing because YOU keep repeating the same mindless mantra, while talking out of two sides of your mouth.  In fact, you've become the King of the Butt Monkeys. (See http://www.lauraingraham.com/)  When I call you on your lazy assertion, you say well, yes, you're right, but.....and then you again assert that it's Bozel who is the big bad advertiser bully.  Again, he did not invent the action, nor is he the biggest activist.

And, me bucko, ye scurvy son of a bilge rat, ye have not heerd of "Talk Like A Pirate Day?"   :^>

RJ...Thanks for that link, I

Thanks for that link, I am still laughing, I liked ChuckESchumers best.

Too bad they didn't play Reids...but..... I can guess!

Thx RJ

Thx for calling me a childish troll RJ. By default or not I was waiting for other shoe to drop. Nobody called me that for over a week. I'm not talking out of both sides. Ok since we are getting nowhere on the Bozell thing, lets just say I am all for free speech, and I don't want anybody taking that away Liberal or Conservative and leave it at that ok?

Never watched many pirate movies, I only watched the First Pirates movie with Johnny Depp and Kierra Knightly.

Shawn!!!!Intervention time.&q

Shawn!!!!

Intervention time.

"Talk Like A Pirate Day" is some sort of strange perversion around here that happens in mid-summer.  Only the men here are silly enough to indulge.

They talk like pirates all day long.  It's really funny to read, but sillier than I'd care to describe.

Now....don't get your knickers in a twist over RJ's comments.

Go look up Pirate's Day...then respond to RJ, in kind, with a pirate-like-comment.

Come on, Shawn....you're doing much better here, keep it up!  Don't devolve to bal-like fits of temper.  :)

Okay Blonde

I did not say anything to disrespect RJ in the last post :( But okay Blonde I will try to behave.

Seriously, Shawn,Ye avast....

Seriously, Shawn,

Ye avast....look up Pirate's Day...it's pretty funny.

Aye...Intervention time....LM

Aye...Intervention time....

LMAO!

Blonde

Hi Blonde,

Guess I am not familiar with the customs here. Out
of curiosity though.I am not trying to be sarcastic. As an impartial
referee, tell me what I did that I need a "time out". If you check out
any of the past debates I had with RJ, he is combative, condecending,
and sounds like a know it all. I have never ever on this site, launched
pesonal attack until I reveived one first.

I realize this is a
conservative website and I have in most part very respecful. RJ just
seems to jump all over my post and want to start something. One time he
nitpicked the fact that I liked MAD TV as much as SNL. I kid you not.
I had to prove i lilked both. Now RJ is a respected member of this
site. "I get that" People will rush to defend him no matter what. I
feel llike an American boxer in the 88 olympics.. I brought up the big
salad because I was under the impression his feelings were hurt.
Remember The Seinfeld episode Where George could not let his girlfriend
take credit for buying the big salad. Well in this case I thought RJ's
idea was like the big salad. I stand corrected RJ, I;m sorry

This
is conserative website, i get it. The American government is corrupt
all around not just the evil Dems. With the Dems they have a little bit
going on.

Harry Reid sayin the war was lost

Jefferson

The stupid spending bill they know Bush will not sign

The Feinstein Thing

Yes I get it Dems are bad. But guess what?? So are the republicans.

Duke Cunningham Disgrace

Libby " I actually want him pardened"

Cheney" Halliburtan"
I will not debate this, I think he is connected to the no bid contract,
and a meeting with Energy consultants" That is my opinion and i'm
sticking to it

Karl Rove. missing emails, does not want to testify without a transcript

Bush.
Look I know the guy is under pressure. He did a great job of bringing
the country together after 911. I realize that there is no concrete
evidence to link him to manipulating intelligence, I think we were
misled into the war. He is having a very rough time right now and
rightly so. The Democratic congress wants to play games with a dumb
spending bill

In conclusion tell me what I am doing wrong.

Thx for being my friend on this site Blonde

Shawn,I didn't imply that you

Shawn,

I didn't imply that you were to be tossed into time out.  I just wanted you to sit up and pay attention.  Did you go look up "Pirates Day"?  If you'd replied in kind, it would have gone a long way to smooth over the difficulties you've had with RJ.

One of the things I never do here is defend nor put words in the mouths of my fellow posters, as they wouldn't presume to speak for me.

You have a history with RJ...if you recall your behaviour here when you first started posting, I think you'll find his reaction to your posts to be warranted.

Don't worry about it.  Just move forward and argue logically and without name calling.  You're entitled to your opinions.  No one is perfect, nor is either party.  No one here will defend Duke Cunningham.  Why on earth would we just because he had an (R) after his name?

In sum, Shawn, you're doing nothing "wrong"....you're just going to have to keep trying to restore your reputation after having gotten off on the wrong foot.  As long as you enjoy posting here, and exchanging ideas, keep on posting.

Pirates Day

With all due respect Blonde, Pirates day was a very small part of the my interaction with RJ.

Hey shawn

Hey shawn.  Blonde was teasing and laughing.  BT chimed in with a laugh, too.   There are no "rules", and I get no special treatement because I'm a "respected" (lol!) member of the site.    Just lighten up, me bucko.

(But if you go back up this thread, and also cast your eyes down to the left, you'll see that I was a model poster.  It was YOU who threw the first insult)

And what's this?  Are you still trying to tell me you like MadTV?  (joking now, as I was then)   ;^>

Bloody right,  RJ,  you get

Bloody right,  RJ,  you get no special treatment, matey!

Step out of line and I'll squash ye like a bug.  After I sick my one legged parrot on ye.

That's it....I can't do pirate.

Aye, Blonde, lass, but you

Aye, Blonde, lass, but you drink good, dark rum, and that be good enough.....arrrr.

Ok RJ

Okay RJ, I am not taking my ball and going home, but you you posted yourself once that how you started to doing this type of thing on a cbs website and debated and wanted a taste for me. I really feel you enjoy getting under peoples skin.

Anyways RJ, I dont want this to escalate any further. So back on to topic. Lets forget Bozell and the FCC okay?. What do you think about free speech? A serious answer and not snide one will be nice. ummm so i guess "shiver me timbers?"

Not sure what you mean, shawn

"...wanted a taste for you"  ???    Not sure what you mean, shawn...

"...enjoy getting under people's skin..."  This I can answer.   What I enjoy doing is trying to puncture other people's arguments.  If that happens to get under their skin, well, that's on them, not me.

P.S.  I can state with absolute certainty that I am not a "know it all"....not even close....   ;^>

BOTG

Yes I can botg, and you also have the right to ignore the crazy liberals that want to take away your right to bear arms or you can fight back.

Geez, shawn, I was about to agree,

Geez, shawn, I was about to say we're in agreement that liberals also practice what you complain that Bozell does.  But then I realized that you're not saying that at all.  In fact, you continue with the mantra that it's Bozel is the big bad advertiser bully.  Again, he did not invent the action, nor is he the biggest activist.

As for the FCC, it was you who suddenly threw the FCC into the mix after posting repeatedly about how much you dislike what Bozell is doing.  The inference that there is a causal relationship is unavoidable.

Have you ever listened to R

Have you ever listened to Rush, libs even though they hate him listen to him because they find him amusing.

free speech

I am not a big Rush Limbaugh fan, but I will crawl over broken glass for his right to be on the air.

Sounds like a crappy show.D

Sounds like a crappy show.

A day without NewsBusters is like a day without sunshine.

Brent is expecting waaaaaaay,

Brent is expecting waaaaaaay, waaaaaaaay, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much from "According to Jim." It's a bad show. But I'm sure it's a liberal's fault that it's a bad show...

What happened to the good o

What happened to the good old days when all the Sitcoms had a Liberal bias (MASH) but were still actually funny ? ;-)

There are still some good one

There are still some good ones out there, IMO. Scrubs, The Office, 30 Rock. To a lesser degree I think How I Met Your Mom is decent.

Great new DVD out, a best of Larry Sanders kinda thing. Can't wait to get it.

good old days

I remember when i could count on NBC on Thursday night for years. Dating all the way to back to the early eightys. Family Ties, Cosby, Cheers, Friends, Seinfeld. Then a few years ago, the best they could come up with is "Joey". No wonder they come in third on Thursday now. I'm not even sure what they put up against Grays Anatomy and CSI.

Unfortunatley they don't make good shows anymore

Unfortunatley, they don't make sitcoms like "Charles in Charge" anymore.  Now that was classic comedy at it's best.

"I've always been crazy, but it's kept me from going insane" Waylon Jennings

Charles in Charge

I liked the second family on Charles in Charge better than the first. Kind of weird how Scott Baio dated Nicole Eggert in real life. Were they getting it on when she was 14-15?

Willie Aimes turned into a born again Christian after that series was over. The last comedy that i watched on consistent basis before it was cancelled was friends. Sex and the City was also genius, but it was on cable tv.

"Eight is Enough"

I never knew about Eggert and Baio.

How about Aimes in "Eight is Enough"?  That was a pretty cool show from the 70's.

"Cause Eight is enough to fill our lives with love."  'Eight is Enough theme song'

I remember Carl

Of course I remember Eight is Enough. TV unfortunatly is one of my passions. Merl the Perl right? The child on the show Adam Rich cannot seem to get enough drugs and Willie Aimms had some struggles as well. Wonder what happenned to the rest of that cast. Grant Goodeve I thought would become popular but he disapeared as well. I was a young child in the seventies, but I remember Charlies Angels and the Six Million Dollar Man

I did  not just have Thursdays wrapped up in the eightys I had Friday as well. Friday was Dallas. Saturday was Love Boat followed by Fantasy Island, Sunday was Knight Rider, Don't remember Monday, Tuesday was Happy Days, Lavern and Shirley, Then Threes Company, Wednesday was Dynasty. In the ninetys  I watched Melrose Place and Beverly Hills 90210 and of course Friends and Seinfeld and Cheers and Monday Night Raw.

Since we are moving away from comedy, even though It had a silly title I loved Buffy the Vampire slayer. That show was very cool.

You seem pretty cool

Now if you want to go real cool from the Seventies, how about "White Shadow".  Now that was a real cool show in my opinion.  It only lasted like 3 seasons, but I thought that was a great show.  I thought Coolidge was cool.  I really liked all the characters from that show, but it didn't seem to last too many seasons.  "Fantasy Island" was pretty cool.  However, I have to admit that "Beverly Hills 90210" or " Melrose Place" definatly weren't my cup of tea.  I had a roommate who loved those shows and insisted on watching them.  I would go crazy and couldn't even begin to watch them.  He also liked "Party of Five", which I thought was beyond horrible.  However "different strokes for different folks" I guess.

"I've always been crazy, but it's kept me from going insane"  Waylon Jennings

Carl

Thx for the kind words Carl. With the exception of one or two posters, I don't get get kinds words very often. I guess I am a sucker for eye candy. Lots of nice looking women on 90210 and Melrose. Well,....I'm not always a sucker. Even Pam Anderson and Yasmine could not keep me interested in Baywatch.

What shows do you watch on TV right now? ? For on MNF, Prison Break, then 24. Tuesday, It is American Idol. Wednesday it is Lost, Thursday It is Grays Anatomy, Friday it is Ghost Whisper "Again the eye candy with Jennifer Love Hewitt" Saturday it is MAD TV then SNL, Nothing on Sunday, I used to watch the Simpsons and Malcalm, but had to cut a few shows because of fatherhood. lol. Do you have a DVR, If you don't i strongly recommend one.

Nothing new I like

I have to admit there is nothing currently on that I like.  Whoever came up with the brilliant idea to release all episodes of a show on DVD is a genius.  I like to watch "Rockford Files" on DVD right now, and I have all of the "SCTV" on DVD as well as VHS that I recorded.  I have all "Kolchak" on DVD and the tv movies as well.  I love "Twilight Zone" and have countless episodes recorded on VHS.  I have I believe all 3 seasons of "White Shadow" on VHS.  I also really liked "Alfred Hitchcock Presents".  I have countless "Andy Griffith" episodes on VHS and DVD, as that and "SCTV" are my 2 favorite shows of all time, but nothing current on tv really strikes my fancy.  I watched a few episodes of "Supernatural" on WB, and really liked it, but it is very hard for me to keep up with shows, as I have 2 small boys that I spend most of my time with after work.  My wife seems to like all the shows I like, so that is really cool.  Don't have a DVR, so I can't record anything, but I buy DVDs with the episodes on them.  I saw "Hawaii Five-O" is out on DVD now, so that is probably next on my list.  I have to admit to you though, that "Charles in Charge" really isn't one of my favorite shows though, as I was being sarcastic.

Have a good night and we can discuss tv shows again in the future.

"I've always been crazy, but it's kept me from going insane"  Waylon Jennings

good night

Good night Carl. I had no idea you were being sarcastic. lol. You sure knew alot about the show. I agree Twilight Zone was a great show. Woudn;t it be amazing to watch it in color? Trust me Carl. i know how hard it is to watch TV with kids around. That is why you need the DVR, It will change your life. I know I sound melodramatic, but it is true.

They did a couple of remakes of "Twilight Zone"

They did a couple of remakes of "Twilight Zone".  One I believe was from CBS back in the late 80's that lasted like 1 or 2 seasons.  It was ok, not horrible, but nothing like the orignal.  There was also a remake about 4 or 5 years ago on one of the other non major networks that was ok too, but not nearly as good as the original.  I think Rod Serling was a genius.  If you want another real cool from the 80's how about "Wiseguy".  I have that on DVD too.  Fred Thompson actually starred in a couple of episodes, so that alone right there is reason to vote for him.  Anyone affiliated with "Wiseguy" is cool.  I thought Ken Wahl was brilliant, and Kevin Spacey as Mel Profitt was great, however I thought the coolest bad guy from all of "Wiseguy" was Ray Sharkey as Sonny Steelgrave.  And noone in the history of television has a sense of humor like Jonathan Banks.

"AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!...2 minute warning"  Frank McPike

Carl,Wise Guy....great show.W

Carl,

Wise Guy....great show.

What about Joan Severence as Susie Profitt?  The whole thing w/ Mel & Susie was bizarro world.

I don't recall Fred Thompson on the show....which season?  I may have to rewatch if that's the case....I only saw the original series, I've never seen it in syndication (wonder why not?).

Blonde

Blonde, Thompson was in the ARC about the white racist group.  That was when Terranova's brother got killed.  I would recommend buying it on DVD if you get the chance, however the "Dead Dog Records" ARC isn't available because of song rights.

Thanks, Carl.I really loved V

Thanks, Carl.

I really loved Vinny Terranova.  Way cooler than Tony Soprano.  Shall have to check it out next time I hit the flea market.  Thx. again.

BTW, was the "Dead Dog Records" the one with Glen Frey?  He played a perfect doper....on Miami Vice, too (gee, why do I still love that show?)

Twilight Zone

Yes, I remember both remakes. The first remake was pretty good. Do you remember "the shadowman episode?" The remake on UPN a few years ago was pretty good as well. It was on Friday night I think. Never watched Wiseguy What is it about?

"Shadowman"

I think I remember "Shadowman".

Wasn't that the guy who lived under the kid's bed and would never do him any harm as long as he lived under his bed?  That was a good one.  In fact I think the kid from that episode was one of the kids from the first "Charles in Charge" family.

"That's the signpost up ahead.  Next stop, the 'Twilight Zone'"

How about the grandpa?

Shawn, all I know is the guy who played the grandpa had a great sense of humor, and he was by far the most funniest guy on the show, don't you think?  He always had the funniest lines and was always in a good mood.

"I've always been crazy, but it's kept me from going insane"  Waylon Jennings

The grandpa was pretty

The grandpa was pretty funny, Just don't understand how they just switched familys one day. It was like we would not notice. Like how they switched Darrens on bewitched.

I do remember that was pretty weird

I have to admit that was really weird how they switched families.  The grandpa though, always seemed to be mad though, and really didn't like Aimes character.  The lady who played Charles's mom is related to John Travolta somehow, and I remember in one episode that she said something cheesy about watching a Travolta movie, or wanting to meet Travolta, and I busted out laughing.

Nicole Eggert is one of those that has had a long Hollywood career with a bright future huh?

"I've always been crazy, but it's kept me from going insane"  Waylon Jennings

Don't remember Carl

Don't remember the mom on Charles in Charge being related to John Travolta, but "Ellen Travolta" who played Chachi's mom on Happy Days was Travoltas sister.

Bigger deal

I think if I were to single out one offensive thing on television, it would be the levels of violence that are everywhere on the tv airwaves. A turd with a wedding ring? Are people that uptight that a little scatological humor sends them over the edge? Use your v-chip or just tell your kids NO if you are really concerned about it.

Or realize that this is crumm

Or realize that this is crummy TV and never let this lame show on in your house. :-)

This TV nonsense has gotten

This TV nonsense has gotten worse and worse, it is beyond repair, no hope.

I wish parents would just heave the thing out the widow, kids would be a lot better off.

You see the results of this - college students coming from all directions to Washington, DC, to dress up in Polar Bear outfits and beat tambourines on the Washington Mall for "Global Warming Day", Demanding to STOP GLOBAL WARMING NOW

Now tell me, how much hope do you give the Country looking at this.

Not that the nitwit element hasn't always been there, but how many more of these can the country take and survive. I don't know
