I would never suggest that the presidential campaign isn't Page One material, but it's not exactly a compelling news story when the summary of a Democratic debate (in today's WashPost) is "Candidates Unite In Criticizing Bush." How is that notably different than any other day of the Bush presidency? Readers ought to see in this an undercurrent of It's-Our-Party politeness, as in "we wouldn't want any of our plausible contenders to be nicked up this early."
But the real puffery came in David Broder's "analysis" on page A6, headlined "Democratic Hopefuls Show Political Heft." These were no eight "dwarves," but a bevy of better-than-Bush giants: "the overall impression from the first formal debate from this early-starting campaign is that the Democrats have a field of contenders that, by any historical measure, matches in quality any the party has offered in decades."
How helpful the whole event was, cheered Broder. The six plausible contenders "showed themselves to be both substantive and direct in their responses," while the left-wing gadflies only "allowed almost all the others to assert that, despite their criticisms of President Bush's Iraq policy, they are ready to use military force to retaliate against future terrorist attacks."
Broder liked all six, not just the top three, as Democratic standard-bearers: "But for all the pre-primary attention focused on those three, it was by no means clear at the end of 90 minutes that they are any more effective advocates of the Democratic cause than Dodd, Richardson or Biden. The field seems both talented and evenly balanced."
Smooches all around for the Democrats.

Uh-huh. But for some reason, I'm reminded of that old saying, something like: "An optimist believes that this is the best of all possible worlds. A pessimist fears that the optimist is correct."

April 27, 2007 - 08:21 ET by Gat New YorkI painfully watched the entire debate as if there were a gun-to-my-head and I had to choose one of them. Broder clearly is painting a rosy colored painting here:
Hillary: she did show the best and clearly was the strongest in national defense, except there is an eight year track record to reflect on when her hubby was president.
Obama: showed he was inexperienced and was somewhat saved by his last minute confrontation with Dennis.
Edwards: clearly the reincarnation of Jimmy Carter – there is no doubt now.
Richardson: most impressive second to Hillary except for the leaving by pulling out all troops now approach.
Biden: best one word answer of the night but sarcasm won’t get him far.
Dodd: unimpressive.
Kucinich: can someone tell him the ‘60s is over and you can’t put flowers in terrorist bomb belts.
Gravel: I was looking for the men in the white coats to come on stage any minute
Bottomline none of these candidates will survive debates with McCain, Romney, Guiliani or Thompson. So Broder should reserve his excitement.

Besides, it's much too early in the game to take any of the candidates very seriously. I'll wait to see if anyone has anything of substance to offer when it's down to 2 or 3 candidates. Till then they can all talk amongst themselves.

The headlines from MSM sites all say something like "Dems blame Bush for Iraq". Do these guys all get the same email every night?
These guys are fighting against each other and against GOP candidates. I don't think Bush is running next time.
The headlines should be:
Dems obsessed with Bush.

His first order of business would be an evacuation? Hell, if a nuke goes off, who exactly is left to evacuate? This was clearly through in to slam Bush on Katrina. Either way, the issue is local, has always been local and should remain a local issue in any emergency. We pay federal taxes to support a military to protect us from foreign enemies don't we? Why shouldn't that be the first response?

Sorry. Someone else will have to help determine which one plays Snow White. Or perhaps in this particular part of the story, Snow White has already been "put to sleep" (Joe Lieberman?) and the Wicked Witch has moved in with the 7 dwarfs.
Unlike Broder’s assessment,
April 27, 2007 - 09:16 ET by KC MulvilleUnlike Broder’s assessment, Byron York at NRO has a different take on the candidates' willingness to use the military. The debate question was how you would respond to an attack in this country that was definitely from al-Qaeda. What’s most interesting is that, again, all of the Democrats responded as if this would be an isolated incident. They all wanted to investigate this as a crime, and then to mount a response as if from scratch. Basically, they would all call a meeting with the “international community” to discuss it. This is exactly what Rudy Giuliani was talking about. If we leave our defense to these people, they will approach it just as we did before September 11 … as a mere crime.
None of the Democrats mentioned that we are already at war against al-Qaeda. None of them appreciates that fact that no one in the beloved international community is willing to lift a finger. None of them seemed to appreciate that you can’t attack al-Qaeda directly (they’re terrorists hiding behind others as fronts) so who would be the target? You’d have to attack al-Qaeda’s allies and suppliers. None of them appreciated that this is not a conventional war.
What it also shows is that none of the Democrats understands the war we’re already fighting. They’re clueless about how to fight a war against terrorists.

Throwing rocks at Bush might temporarily add a bit of hot air to one's ballon flight but that's all it is, hot air. Bush is leaving, he isn't the concern...but of course Democrats specialize in posturing and it was a great occassion to posture. They kind of remind me of the 4 Nerds in the Alltel commercials.

Some of the better lines last night was Biden saying Iran was not as much of a threat and was more of a long term threat. April 27, 2007 - 23:57 ET by JimboTo me, Hillary said that if the US were attacked, “We would retaliate”, with the tone of ‘Stupid question. Of course we would retaliate’. Yet she is against the preemptive actions we are taking now. Isn’t this exactly what Rudy Gulianni said would happen if she or her ilk were elected? We would go back on the defensive like before 9/11?? And yet Rudy gets chastised for such an idea??
The liberal bias knows no bounds.

April 27, 2007 - 23:55 ET by Mr. BishopYou have to remember -- Hillary has been in hot water with the liberal crowd for a few months... even years now. She has not been toeing their line, and they are not happy with her. Like her husband before her, she thinks the only way to be elected, is to play the middle ground -- not take a definite stand on anything other then, "I hate Bush". You will see her say a lot of that, in order to give her plausible deniability for all sides of the Democrat fold.
