Tapper: Timing of Bush Veto Will Be 'Reminder of Everything Unaccomplished' in Iraq

Photo of Brent Baker.

ABC's Jake Tapper concluded his Thursday World News story, on the House and Senate Iraq funding bills which include timetables for the withdrawal of troops, by adding a gratuitous zinger about President Bush's much-derided “Mission Accomplished” speech. Noting how Democrats intend to send their final conference bill to the President on Tuesday, for an expected veto, Tapper helpfully pointed out how that “just so happens to be the fourth anniversary of the President's 'Mission Accomplished' photo-op aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln.” Tapper then bore in, asserting, “of course” that “would be an uncomfortable reminder of everything in Iraq that remains unaccomplished.” War supporters would see it as a reminder of how the Democratic effort to show they support the troops remains unaccomplished.

Tapper's spin matched the second paragraph of a story, by Jonathan Weisman, on the front page of Thursday's Washington Post: “Democrats hope to send the measure to the White House on Monday, almost exactly four years after President Bush declared an end to major combat in a speech aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. That would be a particularly pungent political anniversary for Bush to deliver only the second veto of his presidency.”

From Capitol Hill, Tapper concluded his April 26 World News story:

“Democrats are thinking about sending this bill to the President, for his signature or a veto, on Tuesday, which just so happens to be the fourth anniversary of the President's 'Mission Accomplished' photo-op aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. That, of course Charlie, would be an uncomfortable reminder of everything in Iraq that remains unaccomplished.”

A soldier's lament

I looked across the field today to where my best friend died,

Oh how I well I remember it, for days and days I cried

I remember when we came here, he sang the patriot's song

He talked of all the good things, Said it wouldn't take too long

-

He said we'd help the people and really set them free

So they could live as we do and share in liberty

But things did not go well, for fanatics took the day

And killed innocent people, in many a horrid way

-

They cared not who they killed,Man, woman or a child

But he refused to give up, And looked at me and smiled

They are trying to sap and weaken the will of those who fight-

By their bombs and killings, Each and every night

-

But over time he told me, Now we take the day

The people here have voted, Freedom's on its way

The problem that we now have , Are the folks who sent us here

The ones that we elected, Their hopes have turned to fear

-

They want cut and run now, As they had us do in 'Nam

Fold our tents in dark of night, And take it on the lam

Desert the folks whose freedom, Our boys and girls did buy

With courage and conviction, And some of them did die

-

What kind of men and women, Are these whom we serve

Who haven't got the courage, Who haven't got the nerve

But then as all good soldiers, our duty must be done

So off we went on patrol, with armored vest and gun

-

I didn't hear the weapon, I only heard the groan

I looked to his position, and my good friend was gone

The medics couldn't save him and on this sandy plain

I lost my very best friend, by a sniper he was slain

-

I stood beside his coffin, as they loaded up the plane

Going home to Mom and Dad, and a lovely girl named Jane

Riding back to barracks, I mourned this terrible cost

And then I heard a Senator, saying, "this war is lost"

-

And now I have to wonder, as I continue on my tour

Is all this really worth it, Why should I be so sure

That what we do is honest, what we do is right

When victory is denied us, by those afraid to fight

-

Why did my best friend die? Was there really a need?

I guess not to everyone, especially Senator Reid.

But as I leave the Green Zone, A whisper in my ear

I hear my friend say "Do it. You know why we are here".

-

So I'll continue in my efforts, to do a soldier's job

And not give in to panic, and the cowardice of the mob

I'll work to help these people, build their government

And the only one that I'll obey, is my President.

-

I'll tell my fellow soldiers, We cannot run like rats

We mustn't have people, think we're Democrats

We have to finish like soldiers, what we started to do

And when the Iraqis take over, then our job is through

-

Then we can go home, our heads we'll hold up high

And look our politicians, right straight in the eye

"Say Mister Senator and Mister Congressman too

Whatever made you abandon the Red, White and Blue?

I am far from a Bush fan, but I believe I have been safe because of OUR decision to go to war. We will be showing the white feather to the world if we fail to back Bush and our troops. Senator Reid is an embarrassment to America.

Thanks MrBill. I agree with you about Bush on a lot of issues, but as for our security, I don't see anyone better stepping up (quite to opposite). I'll be sending this out to many friends across the country, most military or ex-military like myself. I'm sure it will make the rounds.

Thank you kind sir and patriot.

Strangely enough, a certain A

Strangely enough, a certain AM political radio talk show host predicted exactly that this would happen, right down to the exact day that it would happen. But I digress...

As it happens, I was in Hawaii (where I grew up in the 1960s right after Statehood) for 2 weeks in 2003. The aircraft carrier Bush landed on stopped there on its way home. As the local Hawaiian TV stations reported, the crew of said aircraft carrier had already erected a "Mission Accomplished" banner, which had nothing to do with Bush and Iraq.

In fact, it was meant as a banner for the ship's successful return from their deployment. My late father was executive officer on a US military ship in the 1950s and 1960s, and he told me (and proved with the pictures he took while on duty) that the ships would always make and display such banners when returning to port after their missions, no matter what the missions were. In his case, the ship he was on was stationed as a weather ship in the North Atlantic.

It's also interesting to note that Bill Clinton did 5 photo-op visits on US aircraft carriers while he was pResident.  That's 5 times more than the current President, and more than any other President in history.

Considering the fact that Mr. Clinton was the first pResident in almost 50 years who never saw military service (FDR was the last), that's pretty funny!

Presidential visits to US Navy ships:

William J. Clinton (1992-2001)

Carrier Carl Vinson (1993; 1995)
Carrier George Washington (1994)
Carrier Independence (1996)
Carrier Harry S. Truman (1998)
Guided Missile Cruiser (AEGIS) Hue City (2000)

George W. Bush (2001-    )     Carrier Abraham Lincoln (2003)

Want more? The 1994 Clinton visit to the USS GW included these tidbits:

"President Clinton used the aircraft carrier George Washington to ferry himself, various high-ranking officials, 40 White House aides, and 23 members of the Press Corps across the English Channel. He made remarks on the ship June 5, and the next day he and his entourage went ashore for the ceremonies in France (images of which were later used in campaign commercials). Along with them went dozens of towels and bathrobes lifted from the ship's stores. The Navy investigated and presented the White House a bill for $562. On June 16, 1994, the White House Office of Scheduling and Advance issued a memo to the staff asking that those who took the items please remit payment. No checks were forthcoming, so a member of the office paid the entire bill just to kill the issue. "

"(Democrat) President Franklin Roosevelt also took the Cruiser U.S.S. Houston to the Galapagos Islands for a fishing trip. "

"Mission Accomplished", indeed!

Who Stagecrafted Your Ignorance?

Ding7777...

I see old troll habits die hard. So, I guess Big Bad Bubba Clinton was entitled to his photo ops but when it comes to somebody with an (R) after their name doesn't have the same consideration. Here I was thinking you were an original, talking-point troll instead of a well-hackneed, tired-sounding, liberal sound bite one. My mistake.

Oh, and who may I ask stagecrafts your ignorance?. The "mission accomplished" stunt as you say refer to it is in actual reference to the banner (a common Navy practice) of welcome home to home port. Not that that litlle truth bite would ever nip at you.

Thank for the laugh....

Yeah.. Bubba strolling ALON

Yeah.. Bubba strolling ALONE, down the beaches of Normandy... happens across a pile of pristine white stones, and fashions them into a cross... a touching, candid, moment that was captured on film by sheer luck.

Bubba strolling ALONE through the thousands of white crosses marking the graves of our brave soldiers, happens by chance to find a single American flag that has fallen, and mournfully replaces it in its rightful spot. So touching. Such a Kodak moment.

I don't think anyone would

I don't think anyone would deny that the Clintons have better talent/press agents than Bush does.

"There are two types of people in this country; those who provide freedom and those who enjoy it." MM says...

The Clintons don't need talen

The Clintons don't need talent/press agents. They own the mainstream media. Which is all they need.

They got the media to carry the water for Bill in 1992, when he claimed the economy "sucked", even though it was later proven that the economic "recovery" that Slick claimed credit for actually began a year and a half before the 1992 election. What makes you think 2008 will be any different?

emjen24 -  The Bush administ

emjen24 -  The Bush administration stopped blaming the aircraft carrier crew a couple of years ago when it acknowledged that the White House requested and paid for the banner.

What is technically incorrect

What is technically incorrect with the "Mission Accomplished banner liberals seem to disparage.

1.)  Did not the Abram Lincoln finish their mission in the Gulf successfully and deserve a welcome home greeting?  Should it have been a Secret welcome home greeting?  Should they have been treated as lepers?

2.)  Did not the period reflect the ending of major combat operations (Divisional manuever elements having stopped and Iraq being occuppied/freed?

Does the liberal self loathing for our country extend SOOOOO far that you cannot allow ANY sort of victory celebration, even if minor?  What is your pathology of Self-hatered?

Exactly!Mission: Take Bag

Exactly!

Mission: Take Baghdad and overthrow the Hussein regime. Mission Freaking Accomplished!!!!!!! In RECORD time with unheard of low casualty levels.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!!!

Jerry,What drives me absolute

Jerry,

What drives me absolutely insane is that the dems continually talk up the "mandate" they have to "end the war".

Excuse me, but I have no idea where a .05% victory translates into a mandate and how the dems are speaking for the "will" of the American people.

I wish they'd just shut up.

Beyond that, any “mandate

Beyond that, any “mandate” there was , was for change.  The Dems equate “Change” with “cut and run”.  That was not the intent of those Americans who wanted change.  They were looking for a better direction toward victory.  Liberal sob’s.

As I said originally, banners

As I said originally, banners like this have been used on our ships for a long time. When southpaws try to claim otherwise, it just confirms their ignorance/stupidity of things military.

Getting back to my dad, he was on a ship doing "weather ship" duty in the North Atlantic in the early 1960s off of Greenland. They had a massive storm with ice so thick they had to use baseball bats to knock it off the sides of the ship so it wouldn't capsize due to the sheer weight of the accumulated ice.

When they sailed back into Boston, guess what? They had a banner that said

"Mission Accomplished"

Great job!  Thanks.  I get so sick of the whole "Mission Accomplished" clap-trap lie (although Bush walked right into that one for them ... I don't think he's made a similar mistake since. Apparently his PR people became a bit more careful)

Jake Tapper,

Huh? WTF???

He did walk into that one, bu

He did walk into that one, but the fact of "ending major combat operations" was and is true.  We've been in a sort of policing mode since then...  With the MSM it's just a matter of spin... everything is spun negative when a Republican is president and vice-versa when it's a Dem.

Honest reporting would cover successes as well as mistakes and would at least be supportive of the general goal of establishing a Democratic foothold against Islamofascist terrorism in the Middle East - but sadly, our Media is a tool in the hands of America-Hating Leftists and a pawn of terrorists.

So it's all about symbolism

So it's all about symbolism now, is it? I hope Bush has the sense to veto this bad boy in some equally symbolic fashion -- maybe on the deck of the Missouri -- then pin it to the door of the Senate with a bayonet.

It's not enough to just say no -- he's gotta say "HELL, no." The Dim-o-crats have been kicking sand on the Republicans since November, and it's embarrassing. Fight back, for God's sake.

dervish,

Hell yeah!!! I am hearing this from loads of people wanting Pres. Bush to make a loud noise in vetoing this rag.

I personally want him to address the military saying, "I will not allow them to do this to you!"

This needs to be another "bull horn" moment for him.

I hope loads of people flood

I hope loads of people flood the White House with this suggestion.  It's a perfect chance to stick it to the Defeat-oc-Rats.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To the honorable President of the United States of America George W. Bush

Dear Mr. President,

I would like to first thank you for your service to our nation in these trying days of good versus evil. I know that it must take its toll on you and your family, and I would like to let you know that you have my support and prayers.

Mr. President, the war funding bill that will be coming to your desk is an act of surrender to our enemy. The announcement of our military withdrawal from Iraq can be seen in no other way. In other times in our nations history, we as Americans would of come together and fought through these hardships, but in todays America, we have become ever more divided. I fear this division may not be able to be healed, because we have a portion of the population who are actively supporting the defeat of the United States foreign policy set forth by you Mr. President. These people are powerful, and are using every technique at their disposal to seek this defeat, specifically the major media of the United States, and stifling those who wish victory for the United States and the people of Iraq.

This is why I urge you Mr. President to take this opportunity to not only veto the bill, but to make use of this opportunity to make it clear to the people of the United States, that these people are actively seeking the defeat of our forces. I urge you to make it clear to the military that these treasonous acts passed by both the house and senate do not reflect the will of the American people, but only the will those who are so greedy for political power they would call the lives paid by their fellow Americans vain, and stake their political future on the defeat of the United States.

Mr. President I fear that if you do not take these steps and so strongly chastise this bill, the powerful left will snuff out any dissenting views to their own. I fear this may be the last chance for you to make a stand. If you do not stand now, and condemn in plain language that these acts are treasonous, and working towards the defeat of the great United States of America, you may not have another opportunity. I urge you to use every opportunity at your disposal to combat this bill, and rally the majority of us Americans who want nothing less than total victory. I urge you Mr. President let this veto be a battle cry, that we will not take this anymore.

Sincerely,

Matthew A. McKearn

Matthew-- my compliments!

Matthew-- my compliments! Well said and so true. This is the last redoubt for our President. He needs to go into full stage offensive and get America back up to the front lines of Democratic cowardice. I watched Pelosi's little finger pointing speech yesterday. She and Reid are cowards, They are the family bullies who show not courage, but abuse to a family member, but tuck their tails between their legs when confronting an enemy that may kill.

Where ’s the coward that would not dare to fight for such a land?

Sir Walter Scott

mattm --what I sent

Sir,You are at the last outpost of the war in Iraq. When you veto the Democrats bill, you need to come out swinging. You need to give those of us who have loyally stood behind you and your efforts to protect America, a rallying cry. "We have not lost, we will not lose. We are winning." Send them back to their cubbyholes after a proper whipping. Stand up and fight for us who stand up and fight for you.

Great poem misterbill! Great

Great poem misterbill! Great letter DCCI! Yuse guys are the reason I love coming to this site. The "Mission Accomplished" misrepresentation by the media was and still is a sore spot with me. Those fools bring it up constantly and I am still angered because I read the speech, which they obviously haven't. (Sorry about CNN link, but I couldn't find the speech in the White House archives)

"The transition from dictatorship to democracy will take time, but it is worth every effort. Our coalition will stay until our work is done and then we will leave and we will leave behind a free Iraq."

I hate to say it folks, but Tapper has a point.

Other than Tapper being a Bush and military hater, can you be more specific?

If you believe the Iraq War and the Bush Administration's communications to us about what is going on and what is at stake has been managed well, then there's no point in responding to your question.

Bush Lied

There is every reason for you to respond.  If you make an allegation, you should support it with fact.  I asked you to be specific.  In typical Troll fashion, you offer 0 supporting facts.  Take the “Bush Lied” bumper sticker off your car and have a responsible debate.

Really? Seems that you have bitten the Liberal talking points hook, line and sinker.  I would think that someone who thinks they are as informed as you are would have no trouble supporting his position with facts.  Oh well.  Have a nice day.

Jimbo says - "There is a fine line between freedom of speech and treason"

Caring - if you think any Pre

Caring - if you think any President would have been able to overcome the distortion by the Democrats and the media then you are brainwashed.  The President spoke plenty of times and the press either didn't cover it or took a sound bite that didn't convey his message.

Even now, they are not reporting all of the experts that say what a disaster it would be to pull out.  Instead they choose to constantly cover the Democrats position.  And when they do cover a Republican who is against a pull out they portray him as some fringe element.   It's no wonder so much of the population that doesn't have a clue gets sucked in.

I think I see--

I think I see--the  white feather peeking out from under your shirt. I will say there have been many slips in this war, but most of them are from an anti-war , heavily liberal press. I believe our commanders in the field. I do not listen to politicians who think that the wave of public sentiment is about to wash over the sand castle of democracy in Iraq. Read what the troops say, here on this site.

Are you upset because the war is dragging on longer than you would like??? Well, so am I. If the naysayers had not put their opinions in front of an international audience (gladly shown by a liberal MSM), we would be winning even better than we are now.

Where ’s the coward that would not dare to fight for such a land?

Sir Walter Scott

Well, there is an easy way to

Well, there is an easy way to derail that symbology, Write VETO on the bill on WEDNESDAY.  snark, snark, snark.

Still not too late for a woman, unencumbered, of intellect and character to enter the Presidential race.

Progress is Being Made in Iraq

I found an animation on the Dod website which clearly shows the progress we are making in Iraq. Here is a link to it.

In 2006 the Iraqi army grew from 49 to 92 battalions. The Iraqi government is quickly starting to take control of their country. If we pull out now it will undo everything that we've done so far in Iraq.

Most of those areas have been

Most of those areas have been safe and sound since day one.  If I remember correctly, immediately after the invasion, 14 of the 18 provinces were a-ok.  When are they going to take over in dangerous areas where they are really needed and where our troops are dying?
