ABC's Donaldson: Gun Owners Will Just ‘Shoot the Paperboy’

Photo of Scott Whitlock.

During a roundtable conversation on the April 22 edition of "This Week," veteran ABC journalists Cokie Roberts and Sam Donaldson echoed boilerplate liberal positions on two separate issues. Discussing the recent Supreme Court decision upholding a congressional ban on partial-birth-abortion, Roberts said she found it "offensive as a woman."

But first, George Will spoke about the Virginia Tech massacre and the fact that armed individuals have prevented slaughters in the past. Roberts derisively responded, "Well, I don't want the shootout at the OK Corral going on at any college campus..."

Later in the program, Will again described how Americans defend themselves with guns. Donaldson rejected the idea by suggesting Americans might shoot their paperboy:

George Will: "Furthermore, Sam, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta studies violence as a public health problem and studies it with the tools of epidemiology. And it has discovered among other interesting things that every year hundreds of thousands of Americans use the weapons they own, one in three households in America has a weapon in it, to deter home invaders. Now–"

Sam Donaldson: "And to shoot the paperboy and the relative coming home late at night."

Cokie Roberts: "That's the real problem is the–"

Will: "That is not a real problem."

Roberts: "–The drunken husband is the real problem with the gun."

Later in the segment, which aired at 10:33am on April 22, the journalists debated the abortion ruling made by the Supreme Court last Wednesday. The panel, which also included "This Week" host George Stephanopoulos, went through the political ramifications of the deicison. It was at this point that Roberts discussed the issue personally and asserted that she found the opinion of Justice Anthony Kennedy, who wrote for the 5-4 majority, "offensive as a woman." Stephanopoulos helpfully wondered whether she found it "a little paternalistic?"

Roberts: "And Justice Kennedy's opinion I found, frankly, offensive as a woman."

George Stephanopoulos: "A little paternalistic?"

Roberts: "But it was saying that, you know, women would be protected from regrets later in life. You know, there are lots of moral decisions people make all through their lives where they regret them and the idea that the court is going to stop that for women is something that I think is, is just offensive."

I swear, Liberals are absolutely nuts! Years of denying reality must fry certain brain circuits...

Incident report: "A gun just came out of nowhere, jumped into a guys hand, forced him to aim at the victim and forced him to pull the trigger...luckily, the bullet veered of so it would only nick the victim- the wall behind him took the brunt of it - poor wall.  No motive for the gun's violent behavior has been determined as yet. The bullet will not be charged, since it made a clear effort to avoid hitting the victim."

Sam Donaldson? Is he still around? I once sat next to Sam in the back of a pickup truck in 1984 as we covered Ronald Reagan as he toured a Chrysler plant in St. Louis (the truck was following the prez through the very large plant). All he did the entire time was heckle the president with his misguided (and not very funny) comments. What a jerk!

You want offensive?

How about 1 million women murdering their children because they don't want them or were too stupid/lazy to use contraceptives in the first place and calling that a "choice".

THAT IS OFFENSIVE!

As far as the "O K corral" at Universities and colleges...It's better that they all have to get shot as fish in a barrel until the wacko runs out of ammo?

Yeah, that's much better.

G Will lays out facts. Cookie

G Will lays out facts. Cookie (liberal Dem family from corrupt LA.) and Sam D ( who has been bitch slapped by G Will for 20 years now, and counting) lay out a phony retort more akin to teenage discussion or The View.

Anyone else notice that the first two announcers booted by this phony PC are two liberals?

defend yourself

C5, they hate it if you can defend yourself, liberals like high body counts.

You need to put your numbers in context, that's approx 1.2 million  per year, see chart (scroll down). The total is approx. 48.6 million. Now that's a high body count!

Of course they don't trust gun owners to not shoot the paperboy. The MSM also doesn't trust the average man to invest in retirement accounts, choose a school, know how to raise kids...

Good point

And hypocritical. Cookie wants state out of a woman's right to have babies hunted, yanked and skull crushed. (still can't find right to baby killing in 1st amendment - couldn't find it in law school)

But she wants state in to intervene in a constitutional right to bear arms and protect one's family. A clearly stated right in 2nd Amendment.

Imagine if the MSM wasn't so outragously liberal in the past 50 years.

Just like how Liberals don't want the government to tell a woman "what to do with her own body", but then turn around and advocate government telling everyone, including women, what kind of fats they can eat (in the interest of health)...

child's right to due process

While we're discussing the law, can't the kid get some due process if it is being sentenced to death. Thought the liberals didn't like capital punishment. Must be ok if they're judge, jury, and executioner.

As for Cokie Roberts, you hav

As for Cokie Roberts, you have to distinguish the result from the opinion. I am totally against abortion, but I didn't like Kennedy's argument, either. I'm delighted with the decision, but I thought the argument was weak. I think it's pretty shaky to oppose abortion on the grounds that we need to coddle women from the after-effects of abortion regret. If that's the criterion, you only need to show that a woman was fully aware of the possible effects and agreed to the procedure anyway. In that respect, the critics are correct: Kennedy's argument is paternalistic. There's plenty of better arguments to use, and I think Kennedy is just dragging his feet here, hoping to preserve the right to abortion even though this procedure is clearly horrific.

I always thought Cokie Roberts was pro-life, but I haven't followed too closely.

Yeah, because this has been happening at epidemic proportions for decades in this country.   Cripes! These people really believe their viewers are morons!

Seems like Sammy has some issues. Either he really thinks law abiding gun owners go out of their way to shoot paperboys or relatives coming home late OR he must often fantasize about doing the same thing himself. Scary.

Gun Control Sam

Perhaps Sam should have banned guns on his New Mexico ranch. Here are details of the murder on his ranch.

I love the the capture in the picture... "Gun Debate Over?" hmm... Where have I heard that before? Oh yeah that is the new LIBERAL tag line on EVERY issue, the debate is over! Honestly I am getting more and more fed up as the days and hours go on. The left make themselfs out to be total idiots and the right still doesn't have the guts to call them out on it! I want the Republicans to be loud on everything, shout down any opposition to gun freedom, war critics, anti-pro lifers. The time for civility has past, now it the time to make a stand!

Crazies to the left, and Whimps to the right

You know, this is the same

You know, this is the same tired crap they always trot out. They take isolated incidents and make it the norm. I can't believe Sam Donaldson was a speaker at the MRC Dishonors show a few years back. This is the same thing they blather on about in the parental notification thing. 'But what if the 12 year old girl is a victim of incest'?? Yes, that does happen, but you know it's in a small minority of the cases...And they know this....Ann Coulter had it right...you pick out a victim that has a perceived ULTIMATE MORAL AUTHORITY..that idiot Sheehan comes to mind..and they can say what ever in the hell they want and be free from critisism.....I swear none of them have the common sense God gave geese.....

While I am whole-heartedly against abortion in any form, but she has a point here. Her point is that someone else is saying "I want to protect you from regret." Well, if that is the case we should ban alcohol... the deaths daily justify that. I'd hate to have anyone regret drunk driving and hurting someone. Wait, we should ban cars because I think we should protect people from the regret of maybe hitting a pedestrian. That is a slippery slope. I agree with the supreme court decision, but not the ensuing lame opinion.

Well where in the Hell is the ACLU on this?? They want to let NAMBLA have their way with em', you'd think they'd be all over this!!! 12 year old girls don't vote either, but you know what side of the argument they're on as far as one of them being allowed to get an abortion with out parental consent or notification.

In fact, where in the Hell has the ACLU been on anything for awhile?? Did they figure the public's bull**it meter was pegged and decided to lay in the weeds for awhile?

Now, this might sting just a little bit.....

ACLU location

The Anit-Christian Litigation Unit is probably busy taking down the Ten Commandments from some public building. Oops, my mistake, they're suing Indiana over a "GOD" specialty license plate.

That wasn't the top item on this search. They are very upset about overcrowding in jails. Maybe a catch and release program in L.A. is needed. They don't mention how many are illegals.

During the same time in L.A. the ACLU got a ruling about who the cops could talk to. It is now unconstitutional to stop and question homeless people unless they are suspicious? That's a hard call for a cop. Is the person more suspicious than usual? And, can I prove it to a judge? The cops had 6000 arrests in the past six months and crime was down 35% but jail overcrowding was up.

Do you get the impression that the ACLU likes criminals but not Christians?

The Supreme Court has reached a consensus.  The debate is over.  Elections have consequences.

Roberts: "–The drunken husband is the real problem with the gun."

I think maybe Cookie is right, or should I say correct? We should probably only allow handgun ownership to 82 year old former Miss Americas who use a walker. It saddens me that my own 84 year old mother will not watch FOX News but gulps in this drivel on ABC and the MSM.

Thank the Good Lord for Fox News, the internet and talk radio!

It should have gone like this

It should have gone like this:

Roberts: "–The drunken husband is the real problem with the gun."

Will: "Well maybe you should lock up the gun when he's been hitting the bottle, Cokie."

The best way to shut up the &

The best way to shut up the "offended" like dissenters Roberts and Donaldson, is to have diagrams depicting the stages of a partial-birth abortion, and ask them to indicate at which point they become offended.  If they're like most pro-abortionist folks, they'll object before even the first picture is portrayed.

"And to shoot the paperb

"And to shoot the paperboy and the relative coming home late at night."

Sam Donaldson's attempt to pass Sheryl Crowe as most retarded comment of the week.

As another poster has already mentioned, is this some sort of problem that has been swept under the rug by the media?  And the liberals think conservatives are dumb?

This is supposed to be journalist, not some fu*$in retard. What kind of logic is that. Is the first instinct of gun owners to find and shoot a paperboy?  No! Get a clue.

shoot the cable guy

The paperboy isn't the problem, unless the NY or LA Times is being delivered, it's the cable guy who tries to reprogram my TV to allow ABC, CNN, or MSNBC. That dude is gonna get hurt because I don't like to watch the pro-Jihad stations.

m1xram

Confront them with facts and what do you get?

Confront them with facts, "...the centers for disease control...", and all you get is hot air and emotional crap..."...You'll shoot the paperboy...drunk husbands are the problem..."

And who cares if Cokie is "offended as a woman".  The congress represents the people and the people find partial birth abortions to be offensive.  Even those who feel we should have legalized abortions find this proceedure repulsive.

The MSM is there to push their agenda.  Period.  I find that, frankly, offensive as an American.

Nuke the whales!

What gets me about the femi

What gets me about the feminist left is that (but for their left-wing politics regarding guns) self defense rights are a distinctly, obviously, feminist issue. If you read their publications, feminists are constantly yammering about the problem of rape, but a pistol immediately obviates strength-differences between men and women. Often the police can't be around, and an available firearm tends to permanently solve rape problems. "God made men & women, but Sam Colt made 'em equal."

I wonder if there has been

I wonder if there has been even-one shooting -- deliberate or accidental -- of even-one paperboy while performing a paperboy job (which pretty-much doesn't exist anymore, it seems...) in the USA over the past 2 decades? If gambling were legal, I'd want to bet Sam on "no," because I doubt he'd want to back his words with his wallet.

Recently I have heard the defense for partial-birth abortion as "for in cases where the woman's health and life is at risk". My question is what risk? The child has already been carried for nine months, the doctor has already turned the baby into a breech position (a HUGE health risk), and the labor is almost complete. One last push (or cough if the doctor stops holding the baby's head in place) and the birth is complete. Where is the risk this abortion is preventing? Or is there something I am missing here? All I see that remains is the responsibility, care and raising of a baby.
