ABC News tries its hand at sensationalism with a story on the VT killer buying "ammo" on the auction site Ebay, but muffs it badly getting all the relevant facts wrong. But it sure is a good headline...
Ammo from eBay? VT Killer May Have Used Site
April 21, 2007 — ABCNews has learned that in the months before his shooting spree at Virginia Tech, Seung-Hui Cho may have purchased 20 rounds of ammunition through the online auction site eBay.An eBay account holder who appears to be Cho purchased a two-pack of 10-round ammunition clips for a Walther P22 on March 22, 2007, less than a month before Cho killed 32 people and himself at Virginia Tech. The ammunition was purchased on eBay from Elk Ridge Shooting Supplies for the same type of weapon used by Cho in his bloody rampage last week.
Problem is, Ebay doesn't sell ammunition... it doesn't even sell guns. What the VT killer bought were clips (magazines), not "ammo"-- if it was even him .
Will ABC News correct itself? Will ABC News admit it was not only misinformed on an easily checked issue, but acted with tabloid journalism to boot?
Keep watching and let's see.

April 21, 2007 - 21:13 ET by bigtimerThank you for this info. I heard earlier that he bought his weapon on line, but they did not say where, or any of that, I can't remember which network I was even on when I heard that, but I was wondering if this isn't going to be a back-door way of the leftists to control some of the internet sites and such.
I don't even want to get into all what I mean by that..but I am worried.
If I had heard that Ebay BS...I would of known that immediately they didn't sell ammo, or guns. An empty clip is a different story.(even if I was interested in buying a gun or ammo and found out Ebay didn't sell that, I find it strange he would even go back and look there for a clip) ..although I still find it strange he would buy a clip seperately, I don't know why, I just do...you would think he could get all of that together somewhere else a lot easier.....who knows, only he does with that twisted mind of his.
Are they going to apologize, correct their facts...doubtful, but even if they do it will be at the end of something like the show...and they will spin that too, in their favor, as if they were just mislead, instead of checking their lazy selves.

April 21, 2007 - 21:33 ET by DCC1Here is the thing, these msm elitist's know so little about guns or anything to do with them, they probably honestly dont know that their is a difference between a clip and ammunition. They probably think its the same thing. They are so ignorant, and fearfull of guns, they come off looking stupid, again!
The .22 was purchased online from a place right up the road from me in Green Bay.
I heard an interview with the owner, and he was saying that he was sick that this happened, and that everything was done legit. But the interviewer ( I think some lady on fox) asked something to the effect of, shouldnt it be harder to get a gun that powerfull? She was asking about the .22.
The guy had to explain just how low power a .22 is, and that they are only really used for target practice, and that no police or military in the world would consider a .22 because they are so low powered.
It just shows the total ignorance in the media, they are so out of touch it isnt even funny. But the sad thing is, they are growing more in touch with more Americans each year, there are so many people that are just as ignorant at the msm's it isnt even funny. It is one of our biggest problems.

When I got to that part of your post I started laughing out loud...
Wow, is all I can say, if you are going to cover a story such as this, you know it ahead of time, you know what questions you may ask, you would think they would want to do a little research first to know what the information was on exactly what they were inquiring about, before they made such fools of themselves as they do constantly.
Your point is well taken on your last paragraph too.

April 21, 2007 - 22:54 ET by Mean Gene Dr. LoveI was surprised Cho chose a .22...I can only guess he couldn't afford something more powerful.
Some of the reporting has been quite ridiculous. In fact I haven't seen anyone report on exactly how the online purchase procedure works. No one has mentioned that it isn't anything like eBay or buying just about anything else online. Basically, you make the purchase, transefer the money, then the licensed dealer sends the firearm to another licensed dealer (or individual), all paperwork that is done in a face-to-face purchase is done before the buyer can take possession of the weapon. It's not a "back-door" or a "loop-hole" to purchasing a firearm...it is all the same as face-to-face except the process takes longer. The way the reporters talk about it, anyone can get around the system to buy and take possession of a firearm by purchasing online. That is just not true.

April 22, 2007 - 03:48 ET by mostlymoderateLOL! I laughed at that one too. A .22 is the gun you give your 12 year old son to learn and respect a gun as well as for target plinking. Sure, they have great distance and accuracy but they are minimally powerful. Heck, in the good-ol-days (about 15 years ago) I was able to go to the shooting range, by myself as a 16 year old and shoot as many .22 bullets as I could afford!!! Again, it isn't the gun that hurts, it's the MORON behind the gun. Luckily, I have a loving father that taught me to respect a gun; maybe more parents should teach their kids about guns rather than trying to "BAN" them.

I remember a Chicago MOB hit in the 80s where a guy was shot with a .22 several times execution style in the head and he lived. My dad was a cop for many years and once arrested a guy and charged him with the beating death of another man. The other man had shot the guy my Dad arrested 8 times with a .22. It made him mad and he beat the shooter to death!

Aside from the opportunity to get the facts wrong, why is this a story at all? I am a user of ebay. Does this make me suspect?
This sick individual is solely responsible for his own actions. Not Ebay, not video games, not American culture, not rich kids, not gun dealers, not arms manufacturers, not evan Wal*Mart, he alone was responsible. He wanted to be famous - the Drive-By media have made it so.
If I had been a news director, the story would have been handled differently. Even if it ment poor ratings.

Clips are used usually in long firearms such as an old military M-1.
If you hear news readers, or even law enforcement people using the term clip, they are ignorant.

They are too caught up in their own world of thinking to be bothered to find out, much less report, the differences between ammo, magazines, clips, etc.

April 22, 2007 - 15:54 ET by marvlWell, what concerns me is, who sold Cho pants? If he had been required to pass a background check in order to buy his jeans then he would not have had any pants to wear, and this would have marked him as a clear whack job. People would have steered clear of him and the tragedy might have been averted. We need tougher pants ownership laws in this country.
Ya suppose he bought his jeans at the Gap? Shame on the Gap for allowing a nutjob to buy jeans at their store. I'm also concerned that people are buying pants everyday of the week on eBay, with no regulation.
