Another UPDATE at bottom of post.
Alleged actor Alec Baldwin can be pretty vicious, at least verbally. He's called Vice President Dick Cheney "a lying, thieving Oil Whore." During the Clinton impeachment, he said: “If we were living in another country, what we, all of us together, would go down to Washington and stone (Republican Congressman) Henry Hyde to death, stone him to death, stone him to death! Then we would go to their house and we’d kill the family, kill the children.” (see update below for MRC coverage of same)
Kill the children? A typically measured, thoughtful comment from a member of the Hollywood Left. So perhaps we shouldn't be surprised that Baldwin's contempt for children extends even to his own.
Today at SFGate.com, Associated Press entertainment writer Sandy Cohen reports on a recent voice mail message left by Baldwin for his 11-year-old daughter. He tells her "You are a rude, thoughtless little pig" and "You don't have the brains or the decency as a human being."
*****Updated by Noel Sheppard: Audio available here.
He goes on: "I don't give a damn that you're 12 years old, or 11 years old, or that you're a child, or that your mother is a thoughtless pain in the ass who doesn't care about what you do as far as I'm concerned. You have humiliated me for the last time with this phone."
The voice mail apparently was leaked by Baldwin's former wife and mother of the young girl, actress Kim Basinger. The propriety of releasing that voice mail can be questioned, but one thing is clear: Alec Baldwin is no Ward Cleaver.
Ms. Basinger once said of her then-husband, "When he starts having these conversations about politics, I run in the bathroom and turn up the radio as loud as I can."
Sounds like good advice for the rest of us.
*****Update by Ken Shepherd: Here's MRC's coverage of Alec Baldwin's foaming-at-the-mouth rant about "stoning Henry Hyde" from 1998. (Video available here) NewsBusters editor and MRC vice president Brent Baker wrote about this on the Dec. 15, 1998, CyberAlert:
Serious political commentary that should be condemned, or a humorous skit? As reports circulating the Internet have asserted, on Friday’s Late Night with Conan O’Brien on NBC actor Alec Baldwin jumped from his chair to scream "We would stone Henry Hyde to death and we would go to their homes and we’d kill their wives and their children!"
Baldwin is a well-known defender of Clinton who held a fundraiser for him last summer at his Long Island home. Monday night on CNBC’s Upfront Tonight he charged that "the ultimate goal" of impeachment advocates "is what I would call ‘election nullification’" as "this is a group of people who want to undo the ‘96 election."
On the December 11 NBC show host Conan O’Brien wrapped up his interview with Baldwin by asking Baldwin about Clinton’s plight. Baldwin answers but as he proceeds his voice rises as he jumps up from his chair and is screaming and flailing his arms by the time he’s finished. Cutting to the punch line, O’Brien then jumps up and puts an air mask over Baldwin’s mouth to calm him down. Funny political satire or, even if meant in jest, mean-spirited and violence-inciting words that would be condemned if uttered by a conservative?
Here’s the exchange as transcribed by MRC news analyst Paul Smith.
Conan O’Brien: "Before we leave, I gotta ask you. It’s no secret that you are very political. You are a very political person.
It’s no secret that you have actually had some associations with the Clintons. That you’re a liberal man and I thought you know today, this is a historic day and you’re one of the most politically active actors out there. What do you think?"
Alec Baldwin: "I was in Africa. I go to Africa. I mean ladies and gentlemen I am in Africa. For three months I am in the bush and I come back. I come back here and I come back to what? I mean what is happening right now as we speak? Right now the Judiciary Committee, the President has an approval rating of 68 percent. The President is very popular and things are going pretty good and they are voting to impeach the President. They voted on one article of impeachment already. And I come back from Africa to stained dresses and cigars and this and impeachment. I am thinking to myself in other countries they are laughing at us twenty four hours a day and I’m thinking to myself if we were in other countries, we would all right now, all of us together, [starts to shout] all of us together would go down to Washington and we would stone Henry Hyde to death! We would stone him to death! [crowd cheers] Wait! Shut up! Shut up! No shut up! I’m not finished. We would stone Henry Hyde to death and we would go to their homes and we’d kill their wives and their children. We would kill their families. [stands up screaming] What is happening in this country? What is happening? UGHHH UGHHH!!!!"
Now, in your mind substitute the name Al Gore or Hillary Clinton for Henry Hyde and the name of a conservative for Baldwin. What kind of reaction would the media establishment be expressing?

Poor Ireland Baldwin. I know what it's like to have a dad who has a tendency to just go completely loony-toons-nutso and either ignore or actively denegrate his children. My ex is doing similar things now to my former stepdaughter--having his bimbo girlfriend sleep over at his place while he's got visitation with his kid, telling his daughter that he's going to spend [insert special occasion here] with his new bimbo instead of with her, answering her legitimate questions about role model behavior with "I'm a grownup and you're not, and don't ask me about [insert questional behavior here] again". My heart cries out to poor Ireland, who really is being abused by at least one parent.

He's supposedly this passionate about his daughter that a missed phone call sets him off, yet, he doesn't know exactly how old she is and seems to have to remind himself she's a "child". I could go step by step through this prime example of the quality of person he is, but I won't. I agree he'll bow out to "rehab" ... but I would love for him to shave his thick, pig-head before he heads in ... Just like Brittany did. Oh, and female Earth to Alec, 11-12-13 is prime time for young girls to establish their self image, especially their bodies. In this whacked out world of trying to keep up with starved models and actresses the last thing you do is call a young girl a "pig" ... She will not take the insult as you meaning she's selfish and inconsiderate ... No, she'll believe she's over weight and will develop an eating disorder ... if her relationship with you hasn't already thrown her down that dark pit. So, he and the ex are in a parental PR battle with their daughter. Well, what really would it have taken for him to leave a message that said calmly and maybe even sweetly, "I'm really disappointed I wasn't able to talk to you when I called. I just miss you so much, and when we miss our phone calls together I miss you even more. I know you get busy too, just like me. I'm sorry we have such troubles connecting, but you fill my heart when I hear your voice. The problems your Mom and I have should not get between you and me. I want you to know how important you are to me and how important our phone calls are to me. ... I hope the next time I call you'll be on the other end of the line and say, "Hello Daddy, how are you? Part of Baldwin's frustration--not that I am excusing his behavior in the least, mind you--is that there have been situations in the past where Kim B. would not allow Baldwin to even talk to his daughter over the phone by her own admission; Baldwin and his lawyer eventually got a judge to tell Basinger that she could not do such a thing, and the eventual settlement of that argument was that Basinger ended up getting her daughter her own private phone line (paid for by Baldwin, IIRC) and the parents worked out a schedule under which Baldwin was allowed to call his daughter during a certain time block.
There's another side to this whole issue, though: Ireland Baldwin is 11 going on 12. Though I never had children of my own, I helped raise my ex's daughter until 8 months ago when he abandoned me for the bimbo he'd found online. There's a reason they call the 11/12/13-year-old age group "tweens"--these kids are not yet teens, but they are definitely not "children" any more, and they're beginning to develop their own code of ethics, acceptible behavioral rules, etc. Ireland, like a lot of girls her age, is starting to form her own opinions about things, quite possibly (as in the case of my ex's daughter) whether or not having a set schedule on when she interacts with Daddy is a good thing. (Every so often, when I approach the ex and ask if it would be all right for me to take my daughter--I still think of her that way--shopping/out to dinner/etc., I can just tell by her body language that she would like nothing better than to be out of Daddy's little apartment and away from Daddy's bimbo.)
All of which is a rambling way of saying that divorce sucks, messy divorces suck worse, and messy divorces with unsettled/uncertain child custody and visitation arrangements are nothing short of sheer Hell. Perhaps it would have behooved Baldwin to, instead of going off on a rampage at getting his daughter's voice mail once again, suggest politely that it might be time to revisit the telephone schedule, because it's disappointing when he's rearranged his schedule to attempt to call her at the designated time and she's not available. The threat at the end ("Wait til I get out there...") was SO not cool.
That's just my opinion, though; your mileage may vary.
Actually, Kimberly, you raise
April 21, 2007 - 06:09 ET by dahliatraversActually, Kimberly, you raise a good point. From some of the things Baldwin said in his vicious tirade (against a 12 year old!), it sounds like he may have been baited. Again, this does not excuse in any way what he did. But if it's true, it would add one more bad person to the picture - namely, the other adult here, Kim Basinger.
Divorce sucks in a big way for everyone, including the children. I sort of thought it was universally accepted that if you were going through one, you didn't use the children as a weapon and you did your best not to expose them to ugly, unnecessary emotionalisms. It's not at all clear that Kim and Alec have done that.
Baldwin's "excuse"
April 20, 2007 - 14:57 ET by QueenMumBaldwin's "excuse" is that "we don't understand what he's been through for the past six years" because of the divorce. Well, how about his daughter? Does she deserve to be the target of his anger and frustration? Poor kid.
Mr. Baldwin is clearly deranged.
A solution

Alec

I well remember Alec's socio
April 20, 2007 - 16:37 ET by Trix RabbitI well remember Alec's sociopathic rant about Henry Hyde and his call to commit mass murder on the latter's family. I wonder how AB would have reacted if someone loudly and publicly demanded that he should be castrated with a butter knife?
Poor, poor, pitiful AB. He is a complete failure as a father and a man and his so-called career is in the toilet, but there is still one bright ray of hope. Maybe he can find gainful employment as the second banana to other demented sociopaths like Michael Moore or Billy Maher.

Think about this gang:Actors
April 20, 2007 - 18:01 ET by PKThink about this gang:
Actors make pretty good money convincing other people that they mean something that some one else has written. As a matter of fact they get great awards and fame and fortune for doing it.
So why do we pay any attention to the movie stars.
I just watched about 90 seconds of one of the star shows showing some of his finer moments .
This guy needs someone with a strait jacket to follow him around. he is a danger to himself. in that sooner or later he will p*%% someone off enough that they will do some permanent attitude adjustment without broken knuckles. it'l be his fault but he will try to blame it on them.

Where's his promise?
April 23, 2007 - 20:26 ET by goldenthroatI am still waiting for smartAlec to fulfill his promise of moving out of the country if Bush was elected president. Gee, Alec - just like a left-coast, bleeding-heart, 'do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do', liberal, you couldn't keep that promise, could you?
His tirade against his daughter further shows how much of a coward he really is.
