Should NBC Have Aired Virginia Tech Killer’s Videotape?

Photo of Noel Sheppard.

When is something clearly newsworthy clearly not newsworthy?

Interesting question, wouldn’t you agree?

Like millions of Americans, I watched the Virginia Tech killer’s videotape yesterday with shock and horror. (Please be advised: I refuse to use his real name, or publish pictures of him, for reasons that should be obvious, and wish all members of the media would adopt the same anonymity strategy when referring to this animal.)

I was at my athletic club when clips of it were making the rounds on the various networks after originally being broadcast on the NBC “Nightly News.” Groups of half-dressed men, some with only towels around their waists, stood staring at the television sets throughout the locker room gazing mesmerized at the screens like moribund ghosts.

I imagine like many Americans, when the shock wore off, it was quickly replaced by anger.

What was NBC News possibly thinking?

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Was this necessary, especially so soon after the massacre, and before the victims had been properly and respectfully buried? What kind of a world do we live in where a bloodbath such as this can happen, and within 48 hours, the assailant can have a video played on national television like the debut of a new Madonna tune?

Obviously feeling the heat for its decision to air this disgraceful piece of celluloid, NBC News issued a statement on April 19: “We did not rush the material onto air.”

Really? NBC News president Steve Capus told Chris Matthews on Wednesday’s “Hardball” (video available here):

I saw a copy around 12:00 noon. And I guess by the first word that went out was at the same time that the Virginia authorities had the news briefing this afternoon at 4:30

Wow. They actually sat on this story for a full four and a half hours. How commendable.

Of course, Matthews didn’t have the – ahem – guts to ask Capus that which most Americans would have loved to: Why the rush, Steve?

Were they worried the killer had sent the tape to multiple news organizations, and that they could get scooped? Was there any thought given to calling the families of the victims to get their feedback or, dare I say it, permission? Did they consider the possibility that airing this so soon would send a dangerously provocative message to other desperately disturbed individuals around the country?

Seemingly addressing these very questions, “Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams posted a video at his “Early Nightly vlog” explaining some of the rationale behind Wednesday’s shocking broadcast. In a four minute, seventeen second pseudo-confession, Williams stated that the decision to air the killer’s videotape was the right one because every other press outlet covered the story, adding:

I don’t know of any reputable news organization in this country that upon receipt of this package would have given it to law enforcement as I think we all would have, but then slipped it in a drawer and not shared its contents – its thematic, overall contents – with the viewing, listening, or reading public.

Fabulous. Don’t you love it when adults use the “Everyone else would have done it, too” defense?

Regardless of this absurdly patronizing explanation, we’ve now seen the video, and, as a result, this animal is destined to become a cult hero.

How long is it going to take for a song to be written about him by any number of anti-establishment musicians out there propping him up as a fine example of how to properly rage against the machine?

Or for t-shirts with one of those gun-toting pictures of him silk-screened on the front and back to make it to your local mall?

Or for a movie about his life – glorifying his final dastardly deed as a symbol of his grand struggle against a society trying to hold him down – that is sure to win an Oscar as the Academy makes another in a seemingly endless series of preposterously offensive political statements?

Face it: the Virginia Tech killer is now a star instead of a cold-blooded killer that should be despised and reviled like the lowest form of vermin walking the planet.

Of course, NBC News isn’t completely to blame, for this might have happened even if they had done the right thing, and turned all of this information over to the authorities putting it away in a drawer afterwards without airing one single second or picture.

However, this video is now at YouTube, and being broadcast over the Internet probably thousands of times while you’re reading this piece.

As such, this killer’s moment of fame has been dramatically extended, much like a Broadway musical that is more successful than anticipated, making his fate significantly more appealing to other disturbed youngsters in our nation desperately craving attention.

Is this overstating the seriousness of the issue? Maybe. However, throughout the Middle East, poor, unemployed Muslim youths are strapping bombs on themselves to kill innocents in the hope of earning some fabulous reward in their afterlife like seventy-two virgins.

That’s probably not enough to entice someone in this country to commit such a heinous act. However, maybe the airing of their own video broadcast coast-to-coast on national television during prime time assuring them of an everlasting fame far greater than they’ve ever imagined is.

Apparently, the folks at NBC News didn’t consider this in the four and a half hours it took for them to get this abomination on the air.

I’d like to think I speak for millions of stunned Americans wanting to know “Why not?”

Noel,For NBC....it was busine

Noel,

For NBC....it was business as usual.

"If it bleeds...it leads".

IMO, this incident is the equivalent of 911. And should be treated as such. With reverence.

The correct thing to have been done was to surrender the evidence (whatever it was, I don't know, nor do I want to) to the authorities. The only thing that NBC should have broadcast is that "we've received xyz and turned it over to the authorities....to be released at such time as the authories deem it to be necessary".

NBC is now complicit in this horrendous crime, after the fact. And contributing to all of the copy cat insanity that may ensue (I was at lunch today when I saw on a news channel that they'd picked up a 14 year old boy who was "going for the record" of killing one hundred people!!!!)

I don't know what else to say, Noel.

I am sad beyond belief, and probably madder than I've been in a really long time.

Brian, the Brianator, the Brinosaur, makin' copies...

I wonder... No matter how careful they were at NBC, weren't they taking a big chance that the handling required to copy all that stuff might have damaged critical evidence? In hindsight, this stuff apparently wasn't that important to the case, but it might have been.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

Blonde

B,

Well, I was starting to feel better about this, and then I was told that the killer went to the post office to send the videotape and manifesto to NBC AFTER he killed the first two at the dorm, and before he killed the rest.

Oh my god. ns

Quite, Noel.The glorification

Quite, Noel.

The glorification of this maniac (lunatic? I just don't quite have the words for it) is (again, I'm losing the words).

NBC should lose their license over the faulty judgement they've shown here.

It was gratuitous, in the extreme. Showing a train wreck, that nobody needed to see.

I mean...I know poor taste is all fashionable and acceptable, etc.

But where are the adults in our society? And I don't mean the liberal Congress. Have we lost our collective minds to see something like this on NETWORK TV and just accept it....business as usual?

If this doesn't make the case for re-apportioning the public airwaves, I don't know what does.

Unbelievable.

Just curious...one of the ear

Just curious...one of the earliest news accounts I saw said that he sent the stuff to MSNBC. Was that the case, or was it sent to the parent company? (as if there is any difference).

Of course, if he had sent this to Fox News, all hell would have broken loose. The fact that he specifically picked NBC to send it to speaks volumes.

Not completely NBC fault

Since the Columbine perps chose Hitler's Birthday as the date for their deed, kids have talked about it. Something like Hell Night in Detrioit at Halloween.

I'm not an NBC fan, but I think society has created this monster by ignoring the games its children play while the parents play their own games.

The TV keeps the kid occupied, then it's video games steeped deeply in such dark solemnity that we couldn't possibly understand. Then there's the unblinking cold proficiency that comes with addictive repetition.

The fantasies attach themselves to the furies and time flies. Meaning in life is realized on that day when training and fantasy merge with reality. For such a time as this.

Reality...What a concept!

Wrong. Evil has been around

Wrong. Evil has been around since Cain and Abel. Video Games is not causing evil anymore a soldier becomes evil after going to war. What is very wrong is to make the evil doer famous, ridicule the police and authorities second guessing all their actions, and demand more gun control when this guy would not have done it if he thought there might be other people with guns to fire back. Even if he did, it would of been a few deaths and injuries versus over 30. This guy is evil. It wasn't video games, it wasn't society, it wasn't his parents, it wasn't the guns.

Evil has been around since Cain killed abel

I think it goes back before then. The God complex (and Cho Punk Hoe fits) has been around among men since the serpent uttered the words. "Eat of the fruit and you shall be as God".

I agree. And I'll again poi

I agree. And I'll again point-out the fact that those with a video game censorship agenda were yammering about it before the nutcase was even identified as a single shooter, much less further identified. "Grand Theft Auto" did not commit this crime, and the video game censor-lobby, which is normally so holier-than-thou when discussing illegal drugs, is TOTALLY IGNORING the antidepressant drug angle to this and just-about EVERY recent school shooting, with a complicit (pharmaceutical ad-fed) news media going right along in lockstep. It's sickening. I just talked to one of the happiest people I know about this issue. She said the only time she ever thought about suicide was when they gave her "Prozak" for a week. (Oops! Media Blasphemy! I mentioned one of big pharma's holy sacraments' brand-names in a non-positive context! Clearly, the proper term to use is the more mysterious "an antidepressant drug"!!)

I wish I'd timed how long Fox News gave that censorious loon Jack Thompson to whine about video game "violence" before anyone even knew it was one shooter...I didn't time Thompson's pro-censorship whine the day of the shooting as the story unfolded, but it was a hell of a lot longer than they've ever given Ron Paul, though, which was exactly one chicken-&-egg "question" which was literally premised on their own antilibertarian media bias.

Judging from what I heard on

Judging from what I heard on the gamer blogs, it was literally just a couple of hours after it occured when it happened.

Anyways, like I said in the other thread, I can understand the hate against NBC for airing this. It's like the videos the Columbine killers made before their rampage: I'm not viewing it. Not in a million years. It's just more pain and anguish for the victims' families, and NBC is beyond stupid for airing it so soon after the rampage.

Uzumaki/Ayanami '08. Because a ninja and an Eva pilot can govern the nation better that what we have now...

Don't blame video games...

I have played some of the goriest, violent, disturbing, horrific video games of all time. I have never wanted to "do it for real" those people need to be locked away, or at least have their parents give a damn. I hate to say it, but I see the problem resting mostly on the baby boomers. Not all of them, but most. The "Gimmie it it's MINE!" crowd. I witness it alot lately. Commercials telling you to LIE to your spouse about what you did in vegas. All of those silly "aliby" ads. You know what I'm talking about. Then we have the 'hide the stuff you weren't supposed to buy in the first place' in your new mini-van secret compartments.. yay! He'll never know now! Until he reviews the credit card bill. Then we have all kinds of blatent dissrespect from rug rats to their parents on a stupid car insurance commercial.

If we started actually punishing our children for bad behavior, our society wouldn't be in the toilet right now. We have set up such a politically correct environment that EVERYTHING is excused. That is exactly what happend in this VA tech case. Ohhh we wouldn't wan't OFFEND anyone for calling them nuts! Just like today. We don't want to OFFEND the religion of 'peace' by calling them for what they have demonstrated to us.. TERRORISTS. THen we sit back and cry and ask "How did this happen?!" Fools... This is insanity, and I hope it is the beginnig of a turn-around for this mighty country. Legal action MUST be persued on NBC. Alas, I might as well be talking to the wall because if the lack responsible action and the mounting defense from NBC in indicative of the comming repercussions, or lack thereof, things will not change.

No argument here

It is my contention, however that the proficiency video games instill is astounding. And reality is that our children are growing up without us. I cannot say how my kids would have been different if both of us hadn't been there to raise them, but I can extrapolate the effect to which our generation has ignored our kids.

And I don't really care to "google it" this evening.

I think I just couldn't take the devastation of elephants (they are such social creatures, and the "good of the herd" is used to keep their populations under control....much to the detriment of the individual animals) after this week's slaughter of innocent college children.

Perhaps sometime later.

But thanks for the thought.

Elephants are really cool animals.

From what I understand when there were young male elephants out of control as teenagers do sometimes, when an adult male came on to the scene, he kept the young ones in line. This was used as an argument as to why fathers are necessary.

CV,

Not so sure.

When elephants had the room to roam, they did it in matriarchial packs. Males are never welcome, except at breeding time.

The males of the species kind of roam around, sometimes in bachelor packs. But the big supreme males are loners.

When it's breeding time, they all come together....at which point the serious males run off the pretenders (hmm...nice little human metaphor there, yes?)

But as I understand it now, the african game authorities pick off the "inconvenient" animals...whether they're the young, up and coming bachelor males, or the too many little males running with the familial group.

The truly sad thing is these animals are extremely intelligent, and understand what the "thinning of the herd" is about.

Fortunately, I don't think about this stuff too much. Otherwise, I'd have a nervous breakdown.

But it is a sad state of affairs.

As was the mass murder at VT...to bring our focus back to where it should be.

Human beings, cherished children, mowed down in the prime of their lives by a freak.

I'd ask all of my fellow NB's to never call him by name...call him what he is...a murderer, whatever. But I shall attempt to never remember his name, nor ever refer to him by anything other than what he is...a sick freak, and a murderer.

NBC learning with their face

Hey Blonde, Right on. It's absolutely apalling what NBC did. Their excuses are even worse. I sincerely hope NBC is taken to task for this. The parents should sue the bejesus out of NBC first of all. Secondly, the FBI and local authorities should slap them with evidence tampering. Yeah hindsight looks like it wouldn't have mattered, but who is NBC to decide what's LEGALLY important? These clowns are finally starting to feel the major backlash of the populace they claim "trusts" them. This goes for all of the MSM outlets. FOX on occasion too. I have not watched the video, nor do I want to. I am surprised at achieving total avoidance on the subject. The MSM is the next dangerous thing to terrorism in this country. When I was a Junior in high school, our classes froze during the horrible columbine shooting. Our classes were not allowed to change rooms for the duration of that day. The MSM takes events like that and splashes it all over their screens and papers like it's some damn movie. I am extremely angry with this behavior, but it's offset by wonderful events of last week...

The MSM needs to wake up and listen to the people that are shouting at them. I fear they won't though. They will bury their heads further in the sand and claim it's everybody elses fault. Gee, that sounds familiar doesn't it? Do you think if somebody were to bust into MSNBC and start randomly blowing away employees, they would put THAT on their screens? I rest my case.

"When you outlaw guns, only the outlaws have them."

a law unto themselves

Pretty much what you'd expect from an MSM that feels free to reveal military secrets on a whim and fake documents to bring down a president. If that package had been mailed to almost any other media organization, I expect the end result would have been the same.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a cirucs breaks out.

That's right. To the questi

That's right. To the question as to whether they should have aired this sick bastard--Hell NO! No, no--a thousand times, no! Giving him any publicity is the worst. Stupid a** people at NBC--

God where do they hire these jerks???

Liberalism is a convenient lie.

Bin Laden tapes vs VT massacre tapes

One inquiry: ALL news agencies liberal AND
conservative have aired Bin Laden tapes. What's the difference? Is it
no more irresponsible to air the tapes of this? Where is the outrage?

I
have had a hard time reconiciling what I think about NBC airing the
tapes. How could it not give the victims or affected nightmares? On the
other hand, as a person I am would clearly be intrigued and curious to
the message and mind of an insane psychopath. I think the videos should
have probably been available only to those who chose to see them,
instead of airing them live on the air.

NBC

Well, Cho couldn't be more happier right now, wherever he is, because NBC is giving him the full 24/7/30 treatment, with pictures of him running on a continuing loop every minute, and reporter and reporterette voice-overs wonder "what's it all about, Alfie?".

Being that NBC is on it's last legs as a creditable news organization, there comes a time when grasping at straws is all it has left, and it starts to pander to the ghouls in society hoping to retain some semblance of audience share.

It's called the Jerry Springer effect.

(UPDATE) Currently, there is a growing backlash brewing, and NBC is beginning to back off.

Except pocomo

Except they only played 10-20 percent of his video- chopped and edited. Not a single writer nor Hollywooder could possibly be happy with that. Plus, the failed to publish the 1800 word written manifesto, or even tell us what "other" items they are pouring over as Brian-crookedface on NBC pointed out

So, we've got a <10% total. Yeah, I bet that dead psycho is happy, since he was crazy he should be, because any sane person would be seriously ticked off. Especially the endless looping of the same moments, when the full 10 minute clip could have been played in it's entirety, repeatedly, many, many times by now.

( I'm glad that everyone has whipped themselves into a blazing glorious fury over it though. It's wonderful watching grown adults go bonkers. )

My answer, NO.

It served NO purpose. It solved nothing, added nothing to the debate over such a possible future issue, and explained nothing of the killer's actions.

It should not have been shown.

It's a small thing, really. Whether it should have been shown. All the majors would have shown it, and I don't think our ignorance of the hatred Cho Punk Hoe flashed onto the screen would have served us well.

We needed to see it, once. For all its similarity to Al Qaeda, The Hood, The video game, the kid down the street.

Not likely the FBI would have shared much, and there is that likelyhood he's Manson incarnate. But we have to take back our children, and ignorance is of no assistance.

Bury the little creep. I refuse to even acknowledge his name.

I do feel for his family, tho, and admire the fact that we've not heard one word from them. I hope they survive this.

I respect your opinion

Things get stashed and we get really mad. I think we needed to look into this face of hatred and have this debate. We've all met misfits whose demeaner differed only slightly from this deviant. Would we really turn them all in based on our own filtered suspicion.

If we are going to take that power upon ourselves, we need to see what we're up against. We don't need the gratuitous replays, but we do need the press.

It isn't the video games...

It's not the fault of video games.. If someone want's to immitate bad behavior, they will. If somebody is that NUTS, it doesn't matter what is around them. He shold have been removed from the school a LONG time ago. Video games don't kill people. Bad people kill people. Just like it isn't the gun manufacturer who is at fault for somebody elses stupidity.

"The child who swallows the most marbles doesn't grow up to have kids of their own"

You say "video games don

You say "video games don't kill people".

That's not quite correct, as it soon emerged after the crime that the 9/11 hijackers used Microsoft Flight Simulator, which is a highly realistic/accurate depiction of the real thing, as one of their training tools. Said software is classified as a "game" product by most distributors.

In addition, the so-called "9/11 Commission" mentioned the hijackers had trained using said video games...

Cho's roommate (Karan Grewal)

Cho's roommate (Karan Grewal) told Chris Matthews that he never saw Cho playing video games (about 6:20 into video). It seems video games were not an influence on the killer.

Yes, but Chrissy tried real hard about video games, didn't he.

Yes, but Chrissy tried real hard about video games, didn't he. What was it, 5 or 6 times he tried to get the answer he wanted. LOL

Now I'll make the same argument from the correct side. If Cho would have gotten involved in video games like "Counterstrike" - and had developed a gaming friends network, he might not have snapped. The video games could have saved this.

As psychologists will claim, when they aren't claiming something else, one who thinks about things or acts themout in imagination ( a videogame in this instance) - often relieves the pressure and never has to carry them out.

Oh well, if only the pos had played counterstike or 2142, or delta force, or half life, or doom / quake arena , halo, man you name it, this all could have been avoided.

BUT, HE DIDN'T PLAY.

Right now the HistoryChannel has "The First 48" on. It's a Kansas City serial killer, and they're showing him, and alll the police videos of him. He eventually leads the police around to all the bodies he stashed around the city,so says the excerpt.

There's another channel that should be SHUT DOWN and censored, they're being intensely irresponsible now.

My answer, yes, but they didn't

My answer, yes, but they didn't. They didn't show us the video. They showed us their sanctified little clip cuts of it.

I guess we're all so pissed that Osama bin Laden videos have been shown now, since he is even a worse murderous sob.

But, then, sober thoughts don't come easily to the emotionally challenged of this thread.

I'm glad everyone proved to me how much they hate the murderer. I'm so proud of everyone. I thought people would like him, but of course, as everyone here rages red, they all tell me there's that person out there, that less than one in a million, who is going to "do it" because of this.

Yep, before the TV tube, none of this stuff ever happened.

Yeppers, guess we should just outlaw it - the TV that is, so we can get back to peace.

Uhh, are Osama videos allowed again, especially if he is ever captured ?

Are all the Saddam court room tapes now - 20,000 (x30) times worse, since those were aired ?

Yeah, none of it is the same, of course....of course, a horse is not a horse....

Once again, I'm surprised at the selective outrage here.

I'd bet $100 bucks that Cho is blabbing more liberal hate in the rest of his tape. He said he hates xtians and the better off, spewing his two Americas doctrine, and did the burger flipper and buchwhacked lines in his 2 plays.

My guess is the rest of the video is CORE liberalism, and it is my opinion the liberals have created the monster.

I want the video - in full - shown.

To hope for such a case asthis to be nought is to say it should happen a thousand times a year. When the news stops making this a big deal, it won't be anymore, and then we'll have real problems.

We have how many famous wackos now ? Charlie Manson is perhaps the most famous. Way back when they had "Jack the Ripper".

Maybe Kim Jong Il and others should never be on the TV either. Noone can say that piece of crap is any better. How about mr mullah puppet from Iran ?

"Censorship". Now, we have to stop all those shows about famous serial killers, time to protest those, too.

My golly, we had better scratch Hitler from study and the tube. Some of his speeches are shown. I bet he loves that too.

Where does this end, people, your selective outrage and censorship ?

Just wondering.

PS- "Cops" needs to be off the air as well, too many getting their 5 minutes of fame there.

Simple sport, you can discuss

Simple sport, you can discuss the news without making the evil murderer famous. Discuss it, quote him...no problem.

A great hope, surely set in impossibility

A great hope, surely set in impossibility. Just as we have great Tv on great people, like the recent Churchill triple series on the History Channel, we will have the famous pieces of crap, too.

I'm sure I would agree to objections if the person was held up as a great force for good. Debra touched on the idea, by saying the announcer should declare the perp a piece of crap- etc, as the video plays. Fine, before or after,or during, whatever. Liberals like to talk lib the terrorists are great forces for good.

I'm not convinced the outcry for censorship is real, nor that the results of said censorship applied would be pleasing to this crew.

Where to stop ? LOL - Talking only allowed ? Ok, well does that apply to Bin Laden tapes ? Manson ? Kim Jong Il ? Saddam ? Che ? The BTK killer ? That lady who drowned her children ? The pretty blonde student molester ? Ken Lay ?

One especially should like this one aired. The guy was a total nutcase according to those commenting. This would be a great time to "teach those on the edge" what goofballs they would be to try something, or not, whatever.

There's this kind of TV crime societal " understanding " that all these people do it "for the fame". For some reason, I think they'ed do it with or without the fame. They surely did before all the TV.

Sorry, I just can't go along with it on this one. I understand it somewhat sucks, but then life isn't fair, and how people figure idiot is a hero, is beyond me. "It makes him into a hero". Uhh, yeah... a real hero...

He's dead, and of course, he's a hero in his own mind ? Is he a hero for those who "will make him a hero", you know, the freaking insane nut cases ?

Ok, it's the next kookball we're going to dissuade -

Uhh, gee, for some reason I don't buy it. If that's the case we have a whole lot of censoring to do beyond all the mr (and now mrs) famous killers.

I'm not so certain it is all that inspirational, anyway. If it were, where are our 2 tag team sniper crews ? Where's our next Charlie Manson ?

I just don't buy it. It's too bad mrkiller "gets his wish", but if that's burning people up to no end, let em burn I say. A free society will allow all sorts of books to be written, probably a movie on this as well.

Now is not the time to call for censorship. It just isn't right.

I don't think anyone is advoc

I don't think anyone is advocating that the government get involved and force censorship, in which case I am right there with you. What people are saying is the media should show restraint. Go ahead and show news items, but do it in such a way that doesn't turn into a love fest for a perp. The news is packaged, because of time and agendas. Thereby the media needs to be professional and state the news not sensationalize it and make it more than what it is.

For example Sport, you have the ability to streak through the parking lot...but you (hopefully) show restraint and have clothes on.

Oh come on

Oh come on, that applies to everything the media does, not just barely showing 15% of their package on deadhead.

I've never gone streaking, it seems that was the favorite of the 60's freak older generation, why have you run around naked,or is your older "greatest degeneration" the groupie sex drug and pig naked loungers crew still doing it ?

SURE SEEMS LIKE IT. It's always some 50 year old wrinked freak.

And now, since I made the argument prior post, it's not the government you claim, but noone ever did as you well know, but you'll pull a lib and switch the meaning of my words, then insult me, so have it back idiot.

Then you say , I think they're just saying "have restraint". LOL Restaint, in case you haven't read the trhead or just pulled the amazing liberal brain fart is, no video, no name - , etc.

Jeezus, people are really losing it.

Get a HOLD of your emotions and face the hard facts for cripe sakes. Not just you, CV, the rest of the babbling idiots here.

If we have to conduct our entire adult populace on the idea that "15 minutes" of fame CREATES murderous rampages, then we might as well pack up the bags and move the hell out of here.

What a bunch of outrageous sissy worry warted liberal panty wasting.

It appears the real entire idea rests upon " I'm so pissed off mr murderer got his death wish "...

GET OVER IT. You don't get to rule the society by your petty freaking emotional problems.

(I hesitate to get involved

(I hesitate to get involved, but...) maybe there's a happy, voluntary, middle ground? Noel makes a good point about NBC only waiting hours. The tape was NBC's property, and it was of course proper to share it with the FBI, and the media is in the news business, so they were eventually going to show it or parts of it to viewers, but my question is "how soon"?

Should the victims be at least in the ground? Media sensationalism interests here would be fighting the twin risks that either the nutcase sent packages to more than one media outlet or that the Fibbies might leak to a competitor, but wouldn't it be nice if they'd sat on the video for a while? I think a delay would also be much less encouraging to possible copycats, because these people aren't exactly into delayed gratification since they're not all that bright...

Eventually, despite how horrific it is, I think they'd need to show it, but NBC had a chance to decide when to show it, and I think they blew it. A jerk on MSNBC just said "we thought long and hard" on it. About four hours qualifies as long and hard for sex, but not for a decision like this...
JMR

Sarc

J,

About four hours qualifies as long and hard for sex, but not for a decision like this...

Excellent! Absolutely correct, and right on the mark! ns

Thanks. (What can I say, la

Thanks. (What can I say, ladies? It's what came to mind because it's what I tend to think about early in the morning!) Anyway, to be serious for a moment, assuming no Fibbie-leaks and no loon-packages to any other media, NBC could have REALLY played this a lot better with a delay, which they could have much more easily painted as decency, even though I can describe some venal motives for it. Think about it...With delay and ONLY internal viewing allowed for the first month, competing newsdroids would be reduced to interviewing various NBC newsdroids about what they'd seen. Then NBC could let victims' family members see over the next few months (in very controlled settings where the video could not leak) and talk publicly about how they're cooperating so-well with law enforcement (while privately warning the Fibbies NOT to leak if they ever want even halfway decent cooperation again!). Finally, when the rest of the news media are collectively going nuts about what NBC will do, they could release it like they did in 4 hours anyway, and 'most everyone would probably be satisfied instead of angry.
JMR

Sarc

J,

Exactly. And, at that point, they could make the claim that the victims' families had all seen the video, and approved its release to further our collective knowledge on the psychology of such animals in the hopes of preventing recurrances in the future.

There was a far more appropriate, and financially beneficial option that NBC foolishly avoided. I sincerely hope there's a backlash, but imagine the memory of Americans to be too short, for this folly will likely be forgotten by next week. ns

Sport where have I insulted y

Sport where have I insulted you? Yet you called me an idiot and a liberal, next thing I know you will call me Rosie. Calm down.

Now as far as your weak argument not showing videos of various evil dictators or terrorists like Hitler. The difference there is they are an enemy that America needs to be aware of and unite against. This guy is dead, he doesn't have an army, there is nothing to unite against ( except guns maybe ). The nature of the beast is the media packages and spins, so in this instance I think they should of showed restraint and showed respect to the victims as well as not make this guy be a cult hero for taking on America. If they spinned it as we need to arm the students and teachers so this doesn't happen again, he is responsible for the carnage (not find someone to blame) and poke holes in this guys letter as to why he is the victim, then I don't think people would be as upset against them.

My sentiments, exactly, WTH.

My sentiments, exactly, WTH. NO! NO! NO! NO!

My first reaction was this: who from the post office delivered the "suspect" envelope to NBC??? If, in fact, the postal service realized this was an important piece of mail possibly relating to the horrific crime recently committed, why not give it to their security forces or the FBI instead of delivering it to a news organization? Rules of the post office???must be delivered??? This is just the first error of judgment, in my opinion.

Secondly, the officials at NBC erred in opening the package. Again, for the reasons listed above. Contacting the law enforcement authorities should have been their first move. Did they not realize they had a critical piece of evidence in a mass murder? But NO, gotta get the "get" - beat the other networks - show the filth! GET THOSE RATINGS!!!

NBC should be hung out to dry for giving this demented killer the publicity he craved from the grave. Too bad he couldn't have followed through with the recommended counseling and communicated his weird thoughts while he was alive. By airing these images, NBC gave validity to a sadistic madman - the television in our home will never be tuned to that channel again. No amount of excuses will ever erase those images.

The students, college administrators and local law enforcement officials have all shown such good character and class in the days since they experienced such an unimaginable tragedy. Seeing such top-quality young people and how they have responded to such a grave situation gives me great hope for the future of our country.

The media could take a few lessons from them. Watching and listening to the various reporters, I was reminded of the Mary Sunshine flock in the movie, Chicago, where they run from one tragic event (now old) to the new one! "...and tell me all about it...what did you see...what did you feel when you pulled the trigger??" PUKE!

I commend the students and families and other involved individuals who have said "NO" to any further interviews. Too bad the media can't respect the privacy of those who are mourning. They need to be left alone to grieve and console each other so that they can return to their lives without all the prying eyes and microphones of the press!

Most important of all, the president of VT should order all media vehicles and personnel to be removed from the campus immediately - TODAY! No interviews Monday with returning students "how do you feel today?" "do you miss your friends?" ad nauseum!!! They honored the Amish in their recent school tragedy and should do be expected to do the same here.

My heart goes out to everyone who was touched by this tragic event...including such innocent bystanders as those of us who knew no one but were shocked and offended by such a horrific crime and the ensuing invasive news coverage. Gone are the days of reporting facts...our media have become nothing more than scandal sheets! I am ashamed of our country being presented to the world is such an terrible manner. We can never stop random acts of violence, but perhaps we can help prevent them by each of us performing instead, random acts of kindness.

God Bless America!

NBC: National Breeder of Copycats ?

Does anyone think NBC will get blamed for encouraging copycats?

I'm planning on sueing

I'm planning on sueing every Tv news channel that ever aired Hitler video, and every publisher that ever released Mein Kampf, and of course blaming them for every fascist dictator that arose since. Dialing 1-800-ACLU now.

I'm sure you'll get a quick r

I'm sure you'll get a quick response from that phone call!

Not a chance...but you can be

Not a chance...but you can be sure the reaction would have been different had the package been sent to Fox! I still maintain it should have been given to law enforcement UNOPENED!

I too, could not bring myself

I too, could not bring myself to type his name on my site, Noel. In the title of my "headlines and commentary," section on my site, I put [VT Murderer], in place of the monster's name. I linked to Matthew Sheffield's thread on NBs, from earlier today.

On this topic, I will post the same thing here on your thread, as I posted on Matthew's thread.

__________________________________________________________

I won't show the pictures on my site, however, I don't believe there is anything wrong with showing the pictures or the videos, if done for the right reasons. However, I believe that the delivery of the pictures should paint the murderer as the demon that he was/is.

Here is what I mean: While the pictures/videos are showing, the news person should be saying,

"These are pictures of a coward, a hardened heartless evil wicked murderer! Thank goodness he is dead and not going to put the families of the victims through a trial, where he would have a lawyer painting him as a victim of society. Now he will be remembered as the sick pathetic immature, self pitying coward, stupid THING that does NOT even qualify to be called a human, much less a 'man.' Thank goodness the monster is gone from this world!"

And the focus of care and concern should always begin and end with speaking of the victims and their lives and their families left behind.

You see, this would send a message to any people thinking of doing such a thing, that no one is going to pity them.

Debra...

Debra,

Debra,

As it occurs, I have done the same thing, more or less. I have not used his name once on my own site and will not. I have called him monster, murderer, etc., but NEVER his name.

I will not contribute to making him famous like HE wanted to be.

I feel the video and photos of this scumbag serve no purpose. He was a mentally ill, sicko and there can BE no "sense" or "resolution" over his actions. They are inexplicable. Showing the video merely allows the world to scoff at the USA once again and encourage others with like mental troubles to act out like the VT killer.

I say bury the tape with the maniac. It does society NO good to see it.

Further, I have not watched the video myself and will NEVER do so.

Warner Todd Huston,I will say

Warner Todd Huston,

I will say this; seeing the pictures of the monster makes it all that much more real, that he really was a demonic presence on this earth - that vile evil creatures really do walk on this earth.

We need God's protection on our nation. I truly believe that the day America makes abortion illegal, we are going to see a huge difference in America. Once Americans put value back on the lives children and their upbringings and truly protect the children from the Hitler mentality wickedness going on in our nation today, monsters like this will not think for one minute that anyone would pity a murderer.

Debra...

Debra, perhaps one day we mig

Debra, perhaps one day we might see the return of prayer in our schools as well? It is time to end the political correctness that is burying our country, inch by inch!

Hi Cape Conservative,We can r

Hi Cape Conservative,

We can rest assure that whenever something like this happens in a school, there is plenty of prayer going on. And it is not to Alah or a 'Saint' or Mary or some god on a planet or "Mother Earth," not even to one's inner child, it is to the real God. People cry out to Jesus Christ --the real Jesus Christ.

And even in a public school, no one dares stop them --teachers and children, they all know who the real God is and all these man-made childish laws to not pray in schools, go right out the window in a true tragedy.

The one thing we would have to be sure to do is to make sure that if prayer does ever get allowed back into public schools, that it is not to a generic god --which is what our military has done with chaplains. Even if this means elective classes, with teachers who let their faith-beliefs be known, so that parents can choose which classes for their kids to be in.

My oldest daughter is in her third year of college and I still remember that first day on campus, when I saw the 'inter faith' chapel. I could feel the evilness of the place, a place to worship false gods. I looked at my daughter and I said, "Don't ever go in there." We do not worship God in a place where Satan is gathering his followers to worship him in his various false god forms.

Debra...
Military Chaplains, Have We Really Thought This Through?

We have been told Ahmadinejad is crazy

We have been told Ahmadinejad is crazy. Same for Kim Jong Il - nutso. Saddam insane.

Of course then, there were the hit pieces here when blondie from alphabetx network(whatever her name is) did her interviews and proclaimed sane and reasonable men. Let's see, kim jong il, the Syrian wipe, and mr ahjihad so far recently.

So, are they insane or not ? If so, none of that reporting can help society either. Same goes for binny boy.

Let's make sure noone reports on them except in the vaguest of terms, and never pics, videos , or names.

Man.

BTW - Howard Dean is a kook too.

PS - Rosie is a nutball on medications for depression, has 911 conspiracy theory deeply inside her psyche and undislodgeable, perhaps the same as illegal alien nutball VT rampager was(medication). Rosie is all over this site.

Keith Olbermann is a definite candidate.
