Gun control advocate and controversial "View" co-host Rosie O’Donnell has given up trying to push for anti-gun legislation.
Despite a series of news events that ought to have, in her view, persuaded Americans to come around to her views on guns, O'Donnell said Tuesday that she believed "there will never be gun control in America" and fighting for it was a "futile attempt." Co-host Joy Behar asked if Rosie "throw(s) up" her "hand." Rosie replied sadly "I sort of do."
The transcript of the exchange is below.
Video (1:00): Real (1.7 MB) or Windows (2 MB), plus MP3 (300 KB)
ROSIE O’DONNELL: Well, and you know, since 1999, Columbine, what happened? All the mothers got together in America, we formed the "Million Mom March." We marched on Washington, estimates of almost two million mothers there. We protested. We picketed against the NRA, and for the government to make sensible gun legislation. And what has happened since then? Nothing. Nothing. I'm shocked that I'm numb about it. I'm shocked that, you know, Columbine, which took me out at the knees, literally where I thought I would never recover and went on anti-depressants, I thought– I don’t know how— I had a child like you do, I was your age with a baby, and the concept of sending them away to school from the nest of the dangers that lurk out there. But somehow this one, I'm almost numb to it. I think well, here we go again.
JOY BEHAR: Do you feel that it's worthless, it’s useless to protest or to make, raise your voice against gun control, for gun control?
O’DONNELL: I think there will never be gun control in America. And I think having tried to fight it for five years of my life it was a futile attempt.
BEHAR: You throw up your hands hun?
O’DONNELL: I sort of do.
O'Donnell reiterated her views on Wednesday's show, expressing dismay that highly publicized school shootings have not enabled her anti-gun agenda:
It was really hard, you know, the Million Mom March after the 1999 Columbine, I mean, everyone thought that would work. What else would it take besides pulling high school kids bloody out of a second floor window. What else would it take to get sensible gun legislation? No one want to take away hunter's rights to hunt. We just want to sort of have sensible gun laws. You know, a teddy bear, has more regulations on it than a gun in terms of safety. Right, but I do feel defeated. I have to tell you. When that happened yesterday, it felt like, well here we go again. You know, it’s like "The Truman Show" or "Groundhog Day." We just wake up, and it just continues, and continues.
O'Donnell's comments came in response to her ostensibly "objective" co-host, ABC News reporter Barbara Walters, remarking that she was "sad" that the anti-gun O'Donnell was "giving up."
The former solo daytime host has been a long-time opponent of gun-rights, famously losing her reputation as the "Queen of Nice" after blowing up at actor Tom Selleck over his support of the National Rifle Association.

April 18, 2007 - 19:14 ET by mostlymoderateIt's annoying, you know? All liberals ever want to do is "take" things away from good, decent, American citizens. Here in California, they first restricted hunting. Then, they restricted fishing (you can hardly fish or hunt ANYWHERE in California now because of the liberals). Then they took our automatic weapons away. Then our semi-automatic (AR-15, et. al. are illegal in California). Now they want to take away ALL guns. Liberals want to tell you what you can eat (New York ban on FAT), they want to tell you what kind of car you can drive (oppose S.U.V.s), want to ban smoking everywhere (they did). I hate liberals. They are COMMUNISTS!!

April 19, 2007 - 02:34 ET by vravaI'm a liberal, and I can assure you that we all aren't that way. I fully support people being able to do almost anything they damned well please as long as it doesn't hurt me. Want to smoke at the restaurant? Have at it, as long as I can still have my non-smoking section. Want to hunt? Just don't shoot me, please. Want to eat fatty fatty food? Me too. God I could use some good fries. Two gay guys want to marry? I'll throw the rice.
As far as guns go, I think a few restrictions are fine. Background checks and the like are good (maybe some of Cho's past mental health problems should have made people think twice before handing him those guns.) Certain mass effect weapons I would rather not be in the hands of just anyone. But, in general, I don't mind resposible, law-abiding citizens carrying them around as long as they know how to use them and keep them safe.

JPFO's response follows in the same document, and demonstrates that they are the organization that truly fights for gun rights. The NRA is no longer interested in fighting for the 2nd Amendment, but is compromising our faith in them.

The most disturbing thing she had to say was that she thinks it's time to do away with the Second Amendment. April 18, 2007 - 22:14 ET by Mean Gene Dr. LoveThat couldn't be further from the truth.
The reason we are concerned about the possibility of more gun control is that if more restrictions are created, we will see these types of tragedies escalate and become much more commonplace. Had there been fewer restrictions, one of the students or a member of the faculty could have save numerous lives the other day.
Yes, our hearts go out to the families and friends of the victims, but we aren't going to wring our hands about this mess that was brought on by policies that while good intentioned bring about disasterous consequences.

I guess another thing to consider though is whether an increase in the number of guns also increases the number of gun accidents and deaths. I wonder what the net result is. If it does indeed decrease gun related violence, is that off-set by an increase in accidents?

April 19, 2007 - 09:44 ET by sarcasmoI just want to know if it was the Viagra ads that bought the silence or the Cialis ads that bought it. Plus, at this point I must admit, it's fun beating the drum of my correct prediction that this loon would be either an Islamofascist or on this particular variety of "antidepressant" drug, especially now that he's beginning to show characteristics of both with his video & the weird writing on his arm.

April 19, 2007 - 10:24 ET by MightyMouthI am of the opinion that he wasn't medicated or at least not on his meds at the time. Regradless, it might be that like an alcoholic prefers to be drunk, the deranged prefer insanity.

April 19, 2007 - 10:40 ET by sarcasmoIf you google "school shooting antidepressant" (without the quotes) you might change your mind. I wonder why you think he'd be off the meds, given the top ten of 326,000(!) results?? For the record, I think (and, if it were legal, I'd bet) that this loon was on his prescribed mystery-meds, and I further think the media's keeping it secret just as they have in past antidepressant-fueled school shootings because big pharma pays 'em a lot to continually run prescription drug ads of all sorts. As with many other mediabias issues, I wish people would follow the money, because then they'd probably see things my way.

In pursuing your logic of looking into the "meds" trail, you would end up opening a whole can of worms:

April 19, 2007 - 11:08 ET by sarcasmoI could add a few of my own, but I happen to like these worms! (But I'd get rid of the prayer issue by getting rid of socialist schools, even though that position seems to upset almost every politician these days!) To me, this situation implicates the psychopharmaceutical effects of antidepressant drugs more than it does public school prayer or lack of same.

but I happen to like these worms
April 19, 2007 - 11:28 ET by vrwc13"but I happen to like these worms"...so do I. And my can of worms predates yours. Why are there all these meds in schools now? Are these kids pawns of unnecessary drugs and/or are there more of them today versus 20, 30 years ago? And if they do truely exist in higher numbers today, Why?
So your question begs...who is making money on all these kids?
My question begs...why do these kids need these drugs in the first place?

Oh, I'm with both questions
April 19, 2007 - 11:35 ET by sarcasmoOh, I'm with both questions!! But when I say things like "the media hysteria over illegal drugs is only matched by their deafening silence over the trend of pumping kids full of often even more dangerous legal drugs over the past few decades" everyone gets annoyed with me...In that all-too-familiar "The Emperor Wears No Clothes" way... 9mm and .22 handguns have been widely available for a long time, and were if anything MORE widely available in the past. Not so for the mystery drug, whatever it is! And (as usual...) it's not like "amateurs" have avoided taking on a bit of the actual-journalism job.

April 19, 2007 - 11:51 ET by vrwc13Sarc, I am with you on this one.
Putting the two questions together gives you this...
"If you can't dumb them down, then drug them. In either case they will be easier to control and/or neutralize"

April 19, 2007 - 11:11 ET by misterbillThat is not the whole problem, but it is a giant piece of it. When God is gone, there is little moral compass to guide us. The ACLU--an admitted Communist association has done enormous damage to this country. Have we no Saint George to slay the dragon of secularism?

April 19, 2007 - 09:39 ET by MightyMouthBut FastEd, the goal is to erradicate guns completely from the United States. After all, no guns, no crime! What these dimwits don't realize is, the US isn't the only maker of guns (70 million Ak47's helloooooo?) Criminals (and whackos) will always be able to get guns(even if they have to import them). Gun controls only insure they will have an abundent supply of victims.

Gun Control
April 25, 2007 - 16:04 ET by whatajoyRosie's view of gun control is so narrow-minded. She doesn't have a clue what she is talking about. Her glass is always half-empty, and she acts as if what she speaks is truth. She's just spouting her opinion - it's not fact. Stricter gun control will not prevent tragedies like Columbine and Virginia Tech from happening. People will always be able to obtain guns and kill people for sport.
Crime statistics go down on looser gun controls. Weird, but totally true. If a burgler knows that a house might be packing guns to defend the home and family, they are less likely to break in. It's not hard to understand.
Rosie is just too far from reality to see this. She's in her own little world. Her views and opinions aren't fact. She won't expand her horizons or read more about the NRA or current gun controls we have. She just takes a little nugget here and there and puts some bread crumbs between them and calls it "fact" or a "conspiracy theory".
Get a clue.
